- Hey everyone! Let's have a look at some linguistic facts today: what are the 8 biggest language families in the world? This list is based on number of speakers (not number of related languages in a family) and includes Indoeuropean, Turkic, Sino-Tibetan, Japanese, Austronesian, Dravidian, Afro-Asian and Niger-Congo. Let me know how you like this kind of educational ASMR, and if there's anything specific you'd like me to cover, tell me about it in the comments!

As a fellow linguist (and passionate cartographer), I have really enjoyed the thematic content of your videos. Organised, good flow, well-researched and professionally done. Most AMSR videos I have come across tend to consist of unscripted ramblings and poor editing, which makes the quality of yours stand out from the crowd. Furthermore, despite English not being your first language, you speak more clearly, accurately and eruditely than the majority of ASMR clips by native speakers. And yeah, it's true, there's a lot of variety in content and production, but I always try to see it as a good sign. It means there's an active community with few barrieres for anyone wishing to participate, people will encourage each other to become better at what they're doing, and it means there's a greater chance someone will make exactly what I'm looking for (even if searching might take a while haha). I hate seeing people disparage other people creating ASMR videos simply because someone else’s style doesn’t suit them. For those who do not know:
The reason we don’t say Hamito languages is because it is a Biblical-based term, as is Semitic (and in an effort to not center the Bible in non-religious things and be more inclusive of the entire world, academics use BCE/CE instead of BC/AD, and other terms that aren’t rooted in Biblical theology), but also it is rooted in the Curse of Ham-the Christian theology used as justification for treating Africans as lesser humans who could and should be enslaved. In short, an excuse for racism. So it’s not a term used anymore. :) Afroasiatic is the proper term.

I think this one sadly hasn't been translated into English (half the book is German-language puns,so somewhat understandable haha), but most of the books I use, I get second hand. It's worth digging around a bit! I'm sure you'll be able to find many beautiful ones :)

Yes, that's a very good observation and I think something really important to be aware of. On a lot of maps, Greenland looks bigger than all of Africa and that's really not the case in reality.

Germanic languages are so beautiful. I would love to learn them all. I could learn only german up to present. But i will learn dutch and swedish, too.
What do you mean "only German"? It is such a difficult language to learn! But if you switch to Dutch or Swedish after that, you'll definitely have an advantage.

Translating between English (native) and German (learned in HS and College) always confused me since the sentence structure is a lot different, even after years of learning it.
Yeah, I actually find it easier to translate between English and French which you'd think should be further apart linguistically.
Fun fact aramaic is actually still spoken! Its spoken by assyrians all over Mesopotamia!

I had a class mate from Iraq who actually spoke Aramaic, because her family originally was Assyrian and she's a Christian so it was important to her family and ancestors to spoke the language of Jesus.
Poor New Zealand…. Always being left off maps 😂. And no Pacific Islands? And what about Pama-Nyungan, the Australian First Nations language group? I can find nothing about its origins other than it began spreading rapidly around 5000 years ago. No idea what it is related to
Hah yeah, it's a bit of a specific map. The language families are listed by number of speakers, not by number of included languages, so that's why they didn't include all parts of the world.

I haven't. I feel like my nails don't look great because I use so much nail polish 😅
