I'm actually a geologist and, when I heard 12 years ago about an album called Precambrian from a band allegedly called The Ocean Collective, I was almost forced to dig into it. And what a band it was! They grow in every album, and with Phanerozoic I & II they close a circle for me and I see myself, again, 12 years ago digging again in a geology-themed metal album. Days will be long since september 25th.

Facts! I cannot wait for this to come out. Oh and check out Thecodontion then! They're a double bass, guitarless death metal band from Italy and their debut is called Supercontinent. Not sure how you are with death metal but you will dig the lyrics and themes they deal with!

I discovered The Ocean in 2019, pretty much by chance. I was channel-surfing through rock channels on Music Choice when I stumbled upon the Metal channel, where "Permian: The Great Dying" was playing. Since I’m a bit of a science nerd, the title naturally caught my attention, and within days I was obsessed with Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic. And now Phanerozoic II is on the horizon. Words cannot describe how excited I am right now.

    "Jurassic I Cretaceous"
    Pieces are shattered once again
    You're no longer innocent
And no this did not come out of the blue
    Well how exactly
    Did you expect me
To react when you keep pushing it?
    Keep pushing the needle in

    You're no longer innocent
And no this did not come out of the blue
    Well how exactly

    Out of the cave
You can feel the weather change
    Blazing ardour in the shade
    Out of the cave
You can feel the weather change
    Blazing ardour in the shade
We thought this would be never-ending
You bathed naked in the planet's glow
But now it's clear, collision is impending
    Well how exactly
    Did you expect me
To react when you keep pushing it?
    Keep pushing the needle in

    Blazing ardour in the shade
    Radiant collapse
    Planetary scale
Our indecent errors paved the way
Truth long known before our last deeds
And the world we know will go down in flames
    Lie awake
    It won't be long
    Lie awake
    It's coming close
With our memories of a clear day
    We're both still here
And the needle head in the sky is on fire
    Can you see
    Lie awake
    It won't be long
    Lie awake
    It's coming close
    We are just like reptiles
    Giant rulers of the world
Within the blink of an eye
Wiped off the face of the earth
    We are just like reptiles
    Giant rulers of the world
Within the blink of an eye
Wiped off the face of the earth
    Melancholia has arrived
    The atmosphere red hot
    From the debris storm
    All sunlight eclipsed for months
    Photosynthesis all but stopped
    Giant forest fires
    Consume the earth
    Barren trees stripped of foliage
    In the rain of tectites
    We are just like reptiles
    Giant rulers of the world
Within the blink of an eye
Wiped off the face of the earth
    We are just like reptiles
    Giant rulers of the world
Within the blink of an eye
Wiped off the face of the earth
    We are all alone
    So save your sentimental considerations
For the moment when it hits
    No hideout, no safe retreat
    Out of the cave

Well this song is gettig more and more relevant by the second....
For future rulers of this planet: humans were stupid. At least dinosaurs didn't cause their own calamities.
It was our own hubris that took us down. Not a meteor or an asteroid. This was our fault. Those of us who knew the dangers are powerless to stop it...and many cheer on their own demise without even realizing it. Those who rule us think they can survive an apocalypse. They'll only be eaten alive by the survivors of what little remains as our once great species leaves this earth out on a whimper.

NorthTimo nah man. There’s some truly spectacular tracks on the new album mixed with some forgettable ones. Last one was pretty good too.

    • @quietri0t
      @quietri0t 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I grew up in the 90s with Tool. And Tool repeat themselves. The Ocean are evolving with every record. The only similarity I see is that you can't spot both vocalists on stage because they hide in the dark 😅.

    • @GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze
      @GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

quietriot Even if Tool doesn’t have the sonic diversity that some prog bands have, the wealth and density of their songs far outshines almost everyone in the genre. They have their sound, and they’re out to perfect that sound, rather than trying to create a wide range of sonic diversity. Two completely different approaches to the genre, and I’m not discounting either.

    • @northtimo666

@@GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze Agree, Im not discounting Tool. It still is definitely in the top 3 bands of all time for me. But for me Aenima was the golden age of Tool. Lateralus and 10,000 days had some masterpieces as well. But I just felt the new album fell a little short for me personally (although it was logical progression for the band). This Ocean track is how I wish Tool would have progressed (maybe if Maynard's voice wasn't shot)

This and a belgian beer await for me back home. My god. The hype.
    Edit, spoilers:
The Heliocentric elements are just godlike. The drums section which resembles: "The First Commandment of the Luminaries" followed by the "Our world will fade away in flames" blew me away.
The hints of trumpet, bongoes (and some piano, I think) just made this even better. The crescendo and blast beats towards the end of the track (and the fall of the meteorite) made me burst into laughter.
    Thank you, The Ocean.

@@Prognosis__ It's funny how different the alcohol standards of Belgian beers are. As a Belgian, a normal / weak beer is anything up to 5%, medium is 6% - 8%, and strong beers only start at 9%. And even then, some of my absolute favorites are between 12% and 15%. A 12% beer is basically unheard of outside of the kraft beer scene in most places. It's neat.
