Agree, but to be honest they are one of the most underrated bands in general, the fact the video for this song only has 87k views is quite frankly disgusting.
In my most humble opinion Paul stands among the greatest such as Portnoy, Danny Carey and Neil Peart. Though they are absolute drum gods, this song is, as far as I'm concerned, the perfect example of Paul's intelligence when writing drum parts for The Ocean. I reckon this is the most clever track he ever wrote because not only it is technically spotless, musically very smart, progressive and complex, but flows absolutely flawlessly with all the other elements of the song, highlighting and accentuating them while also maintaining a very distinct personality and strong poignancy. I love you Paul, hope one day you'll be recognized by the wide public as one of the best, together with the rest of the band.
His writing abilities do for sure help him stand out. He’s better than Carey and Peart imo. Also Rudinger is technically the best to walk the earth...ever (once again this is all opinion based obviously) and if you haven’t got to check out Chris turner you should
I've just recently got into the ocean and even more recently this song. I immediately said to myself that this song is their Lateralus. It's not too long, and just keeps building and building. This song is immediately one of the best songs I've ever heard.
The thing that impresses me most about this is the actual drum part. To create such an emotional and fitting drum part to such a long and winding song is really special... every note feels like it is in the 'right' spot. This song wouldn't be the same with a different drum part and as it stands, it is one of my favorite progressive metal epics I've ever heard (and I've heard hundreds of 'em 😉)! Oh, and the groove he starts playing around 7 minutes in and continues through Renske's part... gets me moving my head every time. 👍
Album of 2020 for me. Also drum play-through of 2020. Absolutely stunning - lost count of how many times I've both listened to the album and played this vid...
This is like a perfect subtle showcase of expertise without too much flex: Incredible Groove ✅ Sense of pacing ✅ Feeling for softer passages ✅ Ability to keep VERY weird time signatures ✅ Blast beats ✅ Extremely fast but precise double bass ✅ Constantly flicking the switch on the snare drum many times during one song ✅ Understanding and enhancing the composition ✅ Really, this video made me appreciate drumming a ton more than before.
I was going to put this on the background while doing something else, but I ended up watching the whole thing without realizing it. His playing is hypnotizing.
Fantastic playing and production, holy crap that mix is awesome. I really dig the camera work but I still would like to see his footwork, the double bass drumming in the final part is awesome
One of the best live drum performances you’ll see. Incredible. I took my wife to see Karnivool in Bristol, UK, a few years back and told her she’d love The Ocean. She had no clue what I was on about. She now loves The Ocean.
I’m looking forward to this record! I’m currently listening to Precambrian (I started with Heliocentric and Anthropocentric) as I am a relatively new fan of this band. This drummer is already in my top 15 drummers. His playing is really smooth and clean, I fucking love it! 👍🏽🤘🏽💀
JUST found this band from the Key of Geebz reaction. First and only song of theirs I've heard, and I immediately clicked on this vid. As a newb to this band, which album is best to start the journey?
@@Dwendele I know I answer late, but if you didn't listen to everything already I would recommend starting with Precambrian (preferably the second disc), and then to continue with Phanerozoic I and Phanerozoic II. These 3 albums are actually one concept album, and Precambrian is (imo) the best post metal record ever made. The thing with this band is that they used to change their line up almost every album, so they're all very different. I would say give a listen to all of them if you have time, since they're an entirely different experience everytime and they're all great (just don't start with Aeolian, Fluxion or Heliocentric, they're slightly less good).
Donner à ce mec a reconnaissance qu'il mérite... c'est un monstre, il excelle dans ce groupe... impressionnant! Et ce son qu'il a ! Magnifique ! Give To this guys all the fame and recognition he deserves or that he should have ! For suuuure... it's a Killer ! Love this band since their beggining... awesome...
Didn’t realize he was still playing. WFAHM is still one of my favorites thanks to his drumming. Glad to see he’s still active. He is immensely underrated.
Paul is an absolute powerhouse, smooth and powerful all at once. Tragically underrated, but drummers who know, know about this player. Great tone ,as usual, and such crisp cymbal sound. Love those vented Meinls. One of the drummers who has inspired my playing for sure. Have met him several times and he was such a chill and humble human being. Keep banging brother!!! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼🤘🏼
I saw them live in Canberra last night and they finished the show with this track. I was lucky enough to be at the front and see the boys perform in all their glory, just incredible 🤘
I don’t watch a lot of drum play throughs but the drum track on this song is just so mind boggling I had to see a human actually play it. Unreal. This has to be one of the best prog metal song of the decade.
Been watching this video for a year now and I just noticed his shirt has one long and one short sleeve. That’s how mesmerised I was by these sick licks!
I've seen Paul playing a few times back in the days. Most times with "War from a Harlots Mouth", I think in Cottbus, Berlin and Karlsruhe and luckily once in Potsdam in this constellation. And this track is literally blowing me away. Keep it up 👍
This is enough to put me back on the kit and break off the rust. I was a beast at one time but I know I could achieve this song if I try hard enough. This is a fucking masterpiece!
me: in tears, about to stand up and applaud
Paul Siedel: bro we still got like 7 minutes of song
I feel you. I keep coming back to this song and I am in awe every time.
The ocean: oh its still first song in album bro, 1pt of album...
One of the most underrated drummers in the world. What a beast.
Totally agree, this is just monstrous 👍🔥
And how he just pulls them blast beats out of his joints being relaxed as if it was yoga practice :D.
And he did it all while being a "healthy" 160 lbs.....just kidding.
and he also sings some of the backing vocals on top of that
Agree, but to be honest they are one of the most underrated bands in general, the fact the video for this song only has 87k views is quite frankly disgusting.
Even the trees are headbanging outside through the window
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate how smooth that transition from snares off to snares on was?!?
I know right? I setup a second snare with the snares off just to avoid the transition.
One of my favorite parts of the song
When ?

Check out the Danny Carey video of him playing Pneuma......equally as impressive
Neil M Well that’s Danny Carey. Everyone in prog knows he’s the drum god.
exactly. lot of drummers just put it out as if they are releasing a remaster of the original track.

@@joespicoli6361 I have to agree with you about Rudinger, dude is fucking insane
Check out Gavin Harrison. There's some drum cam vids on here from his Porcupine Tree days. Another amazing, musical drummer!
I've just recently got into the ocean and even more recently this song. I immediately said to myself that this song is their Lateralus. It's not too long, and just keeps building and building. This song is immediately one of the best songs I've ever heard.
Strong wind outside adds to the atmosphere
Holy shit, clearly Robin wasn't kidding when he said he had to "pace the racehorses" for the first record, dude went OFF in the latter half.
Drumming on Permian though 0_0
I dig the artistic shots of cameraman camra-ing.
Drums have always been REALLY good on The Ocean albums, but Paul has taken it to a whole new level of epicness the last few years!!
Paul Seidel is godlike, what an amazing performance.

I couldn’t play this song on drums, at least not all 13 minutes of it, and especially not all in one take. Paul here is incredibly impressive.
Hey what do you know, a fellow starset fan
It's about time Paul gets his own drum vid production.

I really hope that snare is consenting to everything thats being done to it. That tone is insane.
Plays like it's a much bigger kit, simply awesome!
Thought the same!
The sound of his drum kit is awesome.
Ocean, please never get rid of this guy!
Bro you got the latest news? He is leaving the ocean 😢
when Paul wear that long right sleeve you know already things going serious

mmm feet
1:37 - wind behind the window match perfectly..
He's so accurate, he makes it look so easy.. but one can spend a lifetime on drums and not come even close
This is so satisfying to watch.
I am not a drummer but during this song I was smiling all the time, so many weird signature beats and so on... cool af
