I know this is a pretty random video to cover after such a big upload gap, but the bigger projects i've been fine tuning aren't ready to drop and i've just had a really shit year overall. I thought maybe jumping on another usual niche fun topic would be a good way to just return to routine for me. There's been heavy power creep on this channel, in that i've been afraid of uploading stuff I didn't feel like was double the effort of my last release. As you can tell that's not a very longterm sustainable model. So hopefully this at least hits my standard.
One last thing, in my absence i've released a few "FUNKe Study"s onto my second channel. I was worried they would be too unambitious to fit onto my main, but i've had a lot of people understandably confused/frustrated with them not being here anyways. If you wouldn't mind me moving the series here it would mean a lot to hear from you by comment or email/tweet whatever. I don't want to fill your feed with bs you didn't subscribe for, so I can only really release reviewy stuff here if it's something that won't bother my core audience. YO I wanna clarify some stuff not mentioned in the video. ORAS (gen 3 remakes) did bring back secret bases, so gen 6 'did' have bases but by 6 I just meant the next region game. I didnt mention oras because I figured it would just be repeating myself, I did use blissey bases to grind exp but otherwise it didnt deviate that far from the original bases, in my memory
Also, HGSS actually removed room decorations (and didnt substitute in bases). But pokemon follow you so idc ill take that trade
Lastly, Oldschool Runescape has added some cool shit to construction that wasnt present back in the old days (portal nexus, etc). i just focused on the change to rs3 but in hindsight that deserved a mention as well

your editing is always so high quality, like i really dont understand how you manage to make your videos so smooth and yet also so juicy and sweaty, which reminds me of my late grandfather. he was a very smooth, juicy old man. his favorite food was raw beef which he gummed on until it turned to mush from the mere acidic quality of his saliva. also he could only drink melted ice, not tap water, we had to put the ice in a cup and wait for it to melt so he could drink it.

The secret base feature in Emerald etc and Platinum etc were my absolute favorite features. I loved using money earned from battling and selling items to decorate
I was so sad when it didn't return, and so few games have a satisfying base feature without being part full-blown settlement/build game

Speaking of Runescape, there was this one quest where a boss amazon ships themselves into your house in a giant box, they jump out and just start smashing down the all walls of your house and flinging you through all your furniture. It was totally crazy I loved it! Though hearing they just kinda abandoned construction makes me a little sad.

It boils down to spaghetti code. OSRS did a lot of work on the coding for construction so there were a lot of improvements there, whereas RS3 needs to do a complete overhaul, which keeps getting ignored or pushed back. They have been reworking some skills though, so it's not out of the realm of possibility, it's definitely on the community's mind.

I'll defend that game to my death, but in this category there is nothing there for you.The most you get to choose is color.
Bases in MGSV are purely functional and have no major aesthetic differences whatsoever. You can steal shit from the enemy, which you would think would show up at your base, but it's all abstracted into storage (or if it's not, the difference is difficult to notice). The only exception being specific collectibles like captured animals, which you still don't decide where they go or how many you have out on display. You don't decide where anything goes on your base at all, and there's not much to see.
The base in Peace Walker was just a glorified upgrade system, and the one in V is the same except you can physically visit it, but you'll only really do so take a shower and beat the ever loving shit out of the men and women who take orders from you.
Simply put, anything like player housing is not what the game is designed for at all.
Loved the game as well, and agree the base in PW was to show of the progression of the player.

Ever since Pokemon Ranch I wanted a more elaborate game like that. Maybe a game that combines all the features from all the best Pokemon spin-offs. Races, Snap tours, building friendships, taking care of an entire pokemon farm Stardew Valley style, swagging up your own house with overly expensive merchandise you buy on in-game TV shop channels and actively taking part in a full-scale war between Pokemon nations. (Man, Pokemon conquest was weird)

The LOZ franchise also dabbled in secret bases in BOTW which let you complete an optional side quest for the chance to buy a house and display your weapons in it. Downsides? It didn't give you ANY customization options and was pretty difficult to access. It was cool that they made it difficult to get but it wasn't worth the effort.
The editing and visuals are amazing the way he edits his cuts makes me happy like opening doors leading to the next scene a bunch of little details that aren't necessary but are why I love this channel basically what I'm saying is funke is a secret base

@@gamerguy6990 Because that's how it work. Fire Red and Leaf Green is gen 3, HeartGold and SoulSilver is gen 4, ORAS is gen 6 and when the DP remakes will come out, it will be gen 8. A Generation is basically a stretch of time between main games, any games that come out after a mainline game is part of that generation. For example Pokemon Colosseum is a gen 3 game, Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky is a gen 4 games, Pokemon Conquest is a gen 5 game, you get the idea.
Club penguin probably had the best base function/form. I remember using the unconventional igloos like the mermaid lagoon to make like a big throne room at the end of the cliff thing

these videos are always so stuffed with great attention to detail. like at 9:03, funke made it so the musicians actually bleed over onto eachother's sections of the frame. hardly anyone will notice yet he put the time into it. what is wrong with him? i love it.
I remember my friends showing me their secret bases in Emerald. I only had played Gold, so I was amazed by this immersive feature. I remember imagining where I would make my base, and how I would make it look. Then when platinum came out my friends told me all the cool things you could do in the underground with traps and capture the flag. Unfortunately I missed out on both features and by the time I got those games, I just couldn't immerse myself into it like I could when I was a kid. Still fantastic features, maybe someday they will return for the new generation of kids and get to use their imaginations and just have some plain fun.

I some how went through your exact thought processes, and was so intertained when I got my base with my brother as a kid but was so sad to see the only multiplayer aspect of Pokèmon was gone.
There really isn't a good reason we don't have a good multiplayer.
Also nice: Starbound, a 2D sandbox adventure game. You can choose various different instruments and pick a midi file to play. It will play automatically. What makes it good is that you can enter a band name, which will make every player with the same band name play the same song at the same time. You can create massive orchestras with this mechanic.

Holy fuck his editing is godlike, smoothest transitions I've seen in a while
Skyrim modded houses feel so good. Places to display unique items, cool secrets etc. And on Final Fantasy 14 my girlfriend is insane at decorating and creating houses. You can glitch furnishings together and for different functions to the point it looks like an entirely different game.
Fallout 4 had some of my favourite base building ever, even just in the base game. A perfect blend of form and function, where (within the broader aesthetics that the game allows) you get to choose the look and feel of your own base, whether it be a massive, imposing fortress, a sprawling camp with scattered buildings and tents, a network of towers and bridges that elevates you from the mirelurks and ferals... You could decorate and customize to your heart's content, and spend your hard earned resources to get expensive upgrades that provide real advantages. Setting up elaborate workshops and power armor warehouses.... Placing artillery to give you long ranged support right before you hit that hard ass raider base next door... Organizing your defense, custom equipping each settler with guns and armour, carefully placing turrets and battlements in the best locations, minimizing the number of access points for enemies... Just running around your completed base with your favourite radio playing and the generators chugging, and settlers telling you how hard farming is as you haul back the bodies of fifty drug enhanced heavily armoured psychopaths you killed that afternoon.
Good times.
One thing that irked me in the base buiding in that game was the defense. Sure, I met and exceeded the defense requirement for the base, I minimized acess points, heavily fortified the coumpound, but as soon as I leave that base is raided and somehow they need my help defending it. Like bro, I have heavy turrets, everyone and their mother has a gatling laser and a god damn domesticated deathclaw standing guard, I think they'll be fine.
