- In this video, I'm going to try to help you understand what Funk is in relation to Jamaica Rum, and trying to see whether all Jamaican Rums are Funky. While this isn't a Jamaican Rum Review, we know some Jamaican Rums are heavy on the Funk, so what is the best Jamaican Rum for Beginners and actually, are Jamaican Rums Funky?

Rum has so much flavor diversity! I love trying new bottles and seeing what they bring to the party. Sadly, the liquor stores near me don't stock variety. You can have anything you want as long as it's Bacardi. I have to travel about 20 miles to get anything interesting, but I do it because if I'm having a cocktail, I don't want boring Applebees drinks. Also, I'm playing with my own variations on rum liqueurs like allspice dram and coffee liqueur so I want things like Wray and Nephew that provide some complexity.

Rum Fire is a funky beast and it's amazing
I once had a rum by Cruzan that had this delicious funk. It had a nearly-rotted banana scent and tasted absolutely delicious.
I, for one, am all for the funk.
As a person who’s only started drinking in my 30s, I think it’s funny. People can’t get over the taste of alcohol, but not the funk. EMBRACE. THE FUNK!!!
I recently purchased the Hampden 8 year old and I have to say it is a completely different beast indeed compared to all the other rums I've tried. I don't think my palate is there yet, but I can see myself liking it in the future. Great video Steve, cheers!
Yeah bare with it. I still don't fully appreciate it. But I've come to terms with that. Hampden Rums are just something that don't float my boat! Maybe never will do.

Wrey and nephew is the rum I’m currently drinking on Christmas Day 2022 😂 half a bottle gone and I’ve started slowing down 😂 but for anyone that wants too try some proper crazy strong rum grab your selfs a bottle of st vincent sunset white rum that stuff there 84.5% couple glasses and you won’t remember tomorrow 😂

Hello Steve. My favorite funky Jamaican rum so far is Habitation Velier Forsyths Worthy Park. Solvent, very ripe tropical fruit, esters, 57 degrees 💣. Definitely one of the best rums I've tried. Big quality. There is also his brother the Long Pond STCE which is terrible too. The Blackwell created by Wray & Nephew for the modest sum of 30€

Haha, so I went from the typical American experience of Captain Morgan and Bacardi to Jamaican rums since love traveling there (from land lock colder state, so tropical vacations are nice). I've fallen in love with Jamaican rums so really I guess the "funk" to me is what Jamaica smells like. The tropical smell of pineapples, mangos, ocean and such. And their pineapples they grow locally are mind blowing amazing (the meat is more white than yellow and has such an amazing flavor). Wray & Nephew has that smell if you don't burn your eyes out trying smell it lol. While the Appleton you get more subtle smell of the fruits than with vanilla bursting through. IDK, I just love the tropical smells you get from the Jamaicans while some other regions you get the slight fruit with vanilla but peppery smell. I so agree the 8 year old Appleton is great for mixing and just sipping if you want, either way. I've explored many regions but always return to there.
Cheers Jason. Yeah i agree i think. There is something about "tropical" rums. For me personally though, I kind like them at a younger age as i think for me, too much ageing kills those flavours. Some of the 1-5yo Jamaicans can be fantastic.

My most funky rum on paper must have been some of the DOKs I‘ve tried, but they didn’t feel that funky as you might think at 1600 esters or more. I‘ve had some clairins that felt more funky, but in a different way. And though grand aromes from savanna are high in esters I wouldn’t say that they are funky, it’s something else. Interesting topic but I wouldnt say that esters=funk.
And when it comes to specific rums:
Appleton 8 is the ultimate entry level Jamaican period.
But if you want the funk the options you’ve mentioned are great ones. The WP select is a great slightly more funky (than the Appleton) option as well. Or sherry/port finished high ester rums, the finish mellows the esters.
Or just get a sample, try it from a friends bottle or share one with friends to know if you like the proper funk. The bottle of hampden 8 that I have at home is still at about 60% fill level but has already convinced three people that didn’t like rum before (and Barbados rum, fdc etc weren’t able to turn them into drinkers before)
Thanks for sharing! another angle i wanna do in a few months is like those Clairins vs Jamaican...or at least that type of Funk Comparison. We have a great brand here just popping up.... Renegade. Same liquid, ferment, yeast etc etc, But one is distilled in a Pot the other in a Column...and it's such a great brand to showcase exactly how even the still can produce 2 totally different Rums!
There are those that i absolutely love and use them a lot in cocktails, like Appleton 12 and Hamilton Jamaican Pot still black, some I can't handle, like Smith&Cross, it tastes like jet fuel (To me), and while sometimes I will add like .25oz to a big cocktail to spice it up, there is one that i can't even use in cooking, and that's Hamilton Blond.
The only ones you showed which are available to me is the 8 year Appleton and the Wray and nephew. That Appleton is amazing and I purchased on your recommendation. The Wray and nephew is great in a Wray and ting or as around 1/2oz added to another rum in a cocktail to amp up the flavour
A8 is a fantastic Rum.
funkiest thing I've had is Rum Fire. really don't suggest it neat (I mean, you do you, but if you're at the point where that works for you, then there's no reason to be listening to me), but it's amazing (and much more accessible) in a mai tai. tried it in a daiquiri too. wasn't my favorite daiquiri (it's a pretty unique experience compared to more typical choices), but wasn't unpleasant either, probably not a bad way to get to know it a little bit.

Appleton 8 and Plantation 5 yr are my at home go to's! I tried smith & cross and the funk wasn't my favorite.. tasted a bit like a Doctor's office smell.. but I will keep trying it in hopes of acquiring the taste to enjoy it.
Ive just started getting into rum, and im looking at what to start off with as a serious rum.
Im mainly a whisky drinker and love the cambletown, worm tub, and peated whiskys. So i really like the strong and weird flavours

Just tried Wray and Nephew’s and it’s AMAZING. Steve makes it out to be funkier than Smith and Cross, but it’s actually a lot less funky. It has the crispness of a white rum with just a little bit of funk. If you like a daquerie with a little bit of funk, it’s your ticket! BTW, also great in a Manhattan.
Interesting. Now without wishing to get into an argument, cos I can’t prove it. Are you absolutely sure S&C has a higher Ester Count?! I say this cos I know it’s only circa 145g/ha which surprises most people. What shocks them more is that Xaymaca has a Higher Ester count! Now it may well be higher that Wray…but I’ve seen people mention Wray up at near 200g/hl. Now granted none of that is remotely close to a Hampden. But alls I’m saying, Smith & Cross is deffo 100% a lot lower than what people think. It short, it’s not that Funky at all. BUT. Does offer a lot more than say Appleton 👍

My first Jamiacan funk experience was Hamilton Jamiaca Pot Still Gold. I do like adding a small amount to drinks to add a overripe banana flavor. That is the funk to me basically overripe banana flavor

Steve have you ever had Kasama 7-year rum? It's a very flavorful Filipino rum with the distinct taste of pineapple and it has an extremely "bright" nose.

@@StevetheBarmanUK No Kasama? I'd say you're missing out. Put that one on your "rums to get" list. It runs around $28 in the US, so it's well under 50 pounds. That's alright that Plantation pineapple rum is likely very similar in taste and I would be shocked it's even better. I think Kasama 7-year old has the loveliest nose of any rum I've ever encountered.
The thing is with Kasama is that if I have any other type of booze on a day that I drink Kasama I get a headache. Does any rum have that affect on you?

Interesting. I guess some people out there use 'funk' to denote 'high ester', some to describe 'fatty/oily' and others use 'funk' to denote 'higher alcohol/fusel'. To me, in rum, I associate 'funk' with agricole products, especially pot still agricoles where a minimal tail cut is being made. I'm a homebrewer of almost 20 years who focuses mostly on mixed fermentation; in the mixed-ferm beer world and the 'natural wine' world 'funk' is usually reserved for beers/wines with Brettanomyces character (Orval after 6 months in bottle or any true Lambic); i.e. 'barnyard character' (especially with Brettanomyces bruxellensis). But Brett is super slow to do its thing, especially in the presence of Saccharomyces and more often than not won't present itself for several months, much longer than any rum ferment (even in Jamaica). By contrast a high ester beer (Trappist beers, some English beers, any things brewed with a German hefeweizen strain) would never be labeled 'funky' in the beer world. But I digress, I think of Jamaican rums as 'fruity' (albeit, most typically rotten fruit). To me, the 'funkiest' rums on my shelves are Mexican charandas (like those from Uruapan, which are either straight agricoles or blends with agricole as a component) and Haitian clairins. If I had to name a molasses-derived product that was especially funky it would be the Transcontinental Fiji 5yr.
And funk is often used for peated whiskies. What a wonderful world we live in.
Still wondering… What is funk? Trying to learn about rum because I have had so many terrible experiences. So many rums taste like (some) old people smell, and I cannot stand those (like Havana Club). I like a Captain Morgan Dark or Kraken in Coke, but after watching a lot of rum videos, I can’t figure out if there are something I can look for to be safe when trying a new rum. In Whisky there is so much easier to select a bottle. Probably best just to stick with Plantation Grand Reserve for sipping, because that is great, and lack that terrible taste and smell…
Hi Steve! I'm not quite clear about what does funk mean😢 till now I just only tried the Appleton 8 and it's delicious! And I'm not sure the funk refers to the combination of tropical fruits n vanilla or the pot still related rum due to the high alcoholic content... Or both? 😅 Greetings from Germany
Ha. It’s one of things. Hard to describe if you’ve never had it. But unmistakable once when you try a funky Rum. You’ll 100% know. It’s high ester, overripe tropical fruit smell.
Hey there, new to the channel, glad I found it! By looking at your wall I am quickly expecting my buying experience in the US is much different than yours, as I see things you have that I have trouble getting, but I see things missing that I am suprised aren't up there. To answer your question, Dr. Bird is the funkiest Jamaican I have found especially one at a more standard proof.
Welcome aboard! yeah the UK/US is funny... to dumb it right down, we don't get the smaller US dominant brands as up to now, in the US bottles have to be 750ml. In the UK it's 700ml (or 1l). So Smaller brands physically can't afford different bottling lines. However that will change over the next few years as the US have now realised they miss out on the biggest spirit producers which are UK and Europe, so they're now as of June, accepting 700ml in some States. So over the next few years, you'll start to see some Brands bottling to 700ml instead of 750ml, purely so they can access the UK market. Won't happen overnight, but it means we may be able to get Hamiltons, Denizens, Cruzans etc etc by 2024 ish.
First venture into neat rum was the Appleton Estate signature blend. I really liked the tropical notes which came through on the taste. Am I just a funk lover? I dont want anything that heads toward whiskey or bourbon or scotch. What are some good alternatives that i could try that are like the Appleton i mentioned?
Appleton is not a "Funky Rum". Yes, there's an element of tropical fruit. But when you have some Hampden, Plantation Xaymaca, or Smith & Cross, you'll soon know you've had "Funk" 😉
I've just opened up a Plantation Original Dark. I find that it has a strong aroma, similar to a garbage smell. Am I correct in identifying that as the "funk"? This is a serious question.
Hmmm, personally speaking, no. I've never heard of anyone getting a Funk smell off the OD. BUT, the most important thing is you do you. You always have to associate smells with something you understand. So don't take this as me saying you're wrong to think that, just see it as first steps to identifying familiar smells and aromas. Once you drink more Rum, you'll probably identify smells differently.
Never be put off adding a splash of Jamaican rum on top of another rum it often finishes what was missing you will find the right level it can be as little as 5% to make a world of difference . Don't be shy now !

A Jamaican dude brought me a shot of of the Wray & Nephew tonight🤣 he put that shit on the bar and lit it on fire💯 and said if I was driving to mix it with redbull! That drink is not for the faint of heart 😭
Ha, Wray is a way of life. A right of passage! But it's only the ABV. I can give you many 63-69% Rums that taste a damn sight better than Wray!
great video! I have just started my rum journey by ordering the worthy park single estate yesterday as my first rum before discovering your channel. I was looking for a liquor that i can sip neat as i have only been drinking cognac straight from the bottle. I was kind of in the midst of what spirit i should chose but i have always enjoyed cocktails containing rum. After doing some research the characteristics of jamaican rum with that banana and pineapple notes sounded the most appetizing to me. The worthy park sounded as a good introduction into this flavour profile while still remaining well rounded enough to enjoy as a novice. I'm not sure if i'll be able to appreciate it from the start but i can't wait for it to arrive! I was also looking into buying the El Dorado 15 as it sounded as a rum that could please anyone. Do you think i've made the the right choice? And do you maybe have some suggestions on what routes to go into after this bottle? The price doesn't really matter, just looking for a nice, smooth drink that still has character and is interesting. I'll definitely watch a lot of videos on your channel as you're answering a lot of questions that i had. It's a little bit of a maze starting out and trying to understand what's what without being able to taste anything for yourself is kind of hard with all these different regions, pricing, coloring, aging etc. It's helping a lot. Ha. It’s deffo a maze. And have you started in the right place?! Only time will tell. It’s not where I would’ve pointed you. But I applaud you for jumping in quite a few rungs up the ladder!! Just beware of the “Smooth” thing. Most people associate Smooth with added sugar to Smooth it out.
I think the "funk" is important to understand. I like it but my wife cannot stand it. She loves rum - just not Jamaican rum. If she had only had Jamaican rum and I didn't know about rum she would have never tried another rum.

I just tried Stolen Overproof Rum and it had a funky taste to me. Maybe some overripe banana in there but also a little dill flavor and just an unpleasant maybe industrial note on the finish. Couldn’t stand it. Anybody able to confirm that what I tasted was “funk”?
Ha. Yup. With the Stolen OP, I can confirm that’s most deffo “Funk” you’ve smelled/tasted. 100% some very overripe Banana. It’s undisclosed Distillery, but I’m lead to believe it’s from Hampden (just to help you on your journey - but look at the Marque on the bottle as not all Hampdens are as funky as Stolen)

Hi Steve! I am very new in the world of Jamaican rums, so, I am not familiar with funk in its aroma. I have tasted Worthy Park Rum Bar Silver right now and my feeling was that it is too much for me but I want more! :D Nobody mentions it but it reminds me a bit to durian without the smell of rotten onion or an extremely dense English ale without hops. Is this the thing which is called funk?

I personally would not relate Funk to those flavours/aromas. BUT, I suspect that’s is 💯 your interpretation of it. It’s unmistakable that you don’t get in other rums, so if that’s what you smell, then yeah you’re deffo on the right lines.

Honestly, if you think Appleton 12 is overrated. End your search. Jamaican isn’t for you, UNLESS you’re searching out High Ester, Funk monsters. Appleton 12 is pretty much considered the pinnacle of Rums under £50. It isn’t going to get much better. But Hampdens and Longponds are VERY different beasts. Almost incomparable. So if you want that, start at Hampden 8. The only other one is Smith and Cross. But very different. A Cocktail Rum more than Sipping Rum.

Is it better, YES...is it Funkier... as i said, I don't class Appleton as "Funky" Rums.
I recently found 12yr Rare Cask and I'm absolutely enjoying it! The only other Jamaican I currently have is Appleton's Signature.
The current Hampden 8 yr is the OWH marque which is the lowest ester marque Hampden produces.
I've been lurking/following for 6 months or so, and have always wondered: why don't you have Rum Fire? It's under 50 pounds, and available in the UK. It would have been perfect for this video. (And thanks for your channel. Your videos and reviews are awesome.)
Honestly... cos i actually don't like them! nor the Wray or Rum Bar OP. For me, actually the best White OP are either my Lost Years which is Navy Strength, or Takamaka do one which is phenomenal... without that inherent Jamaican Pot Still Ester vibe. many people slated Takamaka, but they cleverly did a blind tasting and it opened so many peoples eyes. it's a lovely Rum. Takamaka will be a brand i feature more as we get into Autumn/Winter. Thanks for not lurking anymore, anyway! Come join the Discord!

For me, Yes...but i love Multi Blended Rums (this is Barbados and Africa). Note i'm not the biggest Barbados fan. I enjoy them, but they're not epic for me. But if you're massively into Barbados and like multi Blends, this is a GREAT Rum.

I tasted some weak Jamaican stuff like the horrible bitter and watery light crap Plantation Xaymayca and I hated it. I also tried other watered down junk. Then a good non hipster buddy finally offered me a Glencairn of Smith & Cross. Seriously, that is the perfect intro. None of the shitty watered down crap, because the watered down stuff is awful. I later tried stuff up to the magic 1600 level from Long Pond and after that I could never drink anything of this type under 1000, lol. Some people will never like Jamaica until they try proper funk. Appleton for me is junk. I don't like it. Maybe I'm ruined somewhat, lol. The more they barrel it the worst it gets, 25 year is the worst Jamaican I ever tried.
However with Barbados type I love it the older it gets. Outside of Jamaican or Agricole I love wood and charred wood usually. However with St-Lucia I found a level in between, I loved a 9 year old, but the 12 year old of the same liquor was tame and with less aftertaste. So it all depends on what rum and esters is in the mix
Ha, this is a FANTASTIC comment. Thank you. But just to bring you up on one point. It rather seems you've been taken in my ABV as opposed to actually Taste. Because if you were judging it on your palate...and actually a bit of knowledge, you'd know and realise that actually your "Watery Xaymaca" actually has a HIGHER Ester Count that Smith & Cross. S&C comes in roughly at 145gr/hlAA whereas Xaymaca is circa 155gr/hlAA. Now granted, thats not the same as say like Hampden 8yo. For entry level that is on the Higher end. But at only 46% ABV, that must be like water to you as well?!
However, I do love your bravado about drinking 1600gr/hlAA I mean, there aren't many humans on this planet that can actually handle that. Or indeed anything over 1000. But you must be one of those Super Human types! So Congrats.

I could be wrong here, but isn’t the overripe banana smell mainly from an ester? (Specifically isoamyl acetate en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isoamyl_acetate )
Yes this is correct. Same story for the pineapple/overripe pineapple coming from Ethyl Butyrate which Hampden focus on. HOWEVER I also think this is just part of the flavour profile present in a number of jamaican rums - much in the way youd find Coconut and pepper in a lot of Bajan rum
You are correct, sort of, but the point is, to a newbie... High Ester like a Hampden or Wray & Nephew, is a totally different vibe the Bananary/Pineapple notes an Appleton gives off. These videos are not about being super technical or talking science, they're explaining basic knowledge to a newcomer in terms they can understand. Don't also forget that to some distilleries, that "Funk or Hogo" actually comes from the Dunder/Muck Pits too. let alone the type of Still used. There are so many forces at play when distilling, but it's making that distinguishment between "Thats Easy to Drink and bananry" and "Thats gonna blow your funky banana Socks off".
