I recommend using a guitar pick with soft edges to clean off old stickers. That's what I use and it always come out super well, and you don't have to get gunk under your fingernails
WD-40 is a god send for removing stickers and residue from things. I love seeing you fixing these classic GameBoys and returning them to their former glory. I also get a little sad though that they'll likely end up on the shelf of a collector and not be played on. Still as long as they are making people happy, that's what counts.
We have a citrus spray called de-solvit here and it's absolutely fantastic for removing old stickers and glue residue without damaging whatever is underneath 👍
Oh... So the cool Pokemon Crystal logo was just a sticker. I was preparing my comment wanting to say that's the coolest gameboy i've ever seen, because Crystal is my favourite Pokemon game and the transparent emerald with the emerald Unown writing is one of the coolest looking combinations i've ever seen. But... It's just a transparent green Gameboy and nothing else.
Love these refurbs. New sub as of the 31st and I’ve been addicted to your content. Grew up with the gameboy color in teal. So this brings back so many good memories.
A tip for stickers and adhesive residue I learnt as a bab watching Kim and Aggie back in the day: mayonnaise, or as I've adapted it, oil. After soaking in warm water to the point where most of the sticker(s) come off, dry off the object, rub the oil in, leave it for 10-ish minutes and it should wipe away.
Your videos inspired me to do refurbish on a gameboy advance, and gameboy color with front light mod. Turned out well thank to these in depth tutorials. Thanks a bunch from the States
@@TheRetroFuture everyone should be using wall power so we don't have batteries filling up a land fill. to bad there is no way to use rechargeables with it unless you cut parts of the case off :(
Elliot, I just want to thank you for getting me into the hobby of collecting handhelds and modding them. I'm still a beginner but I've managed to swap the shell for my GBA-SP (with an NES style shell!) and also put a backlit screen and new shell for my regular GBA. Loved this video, and keep up the great work!
That gameboy color is so cool, never knew a clear green one existed! Recently I learned there was also a Clear blue Ana Airport gameboy color and pocket, which I found quite interesting.
I don’t have a collection but I saw your video on the dmg IPS from retro modding/handheld legend and put it in my dmg. It was fantastic thanks for making the video!
Watching this video really reminded me of the early days of your channel - amazing to see how far it and your video production has come ! Great work mate 😊
Hi Elliot, I'm not sure if you remember me, I'm the one who posted the picture of this same variant of Gameboy color on your post when you first got this. Good job on refurbishing this one, keep it up!
Great video! It's cathartic to watch you, as I also had the Gameboy-collecting disease a few years back. The sky high prices on the LE Gameboys slowed me down. It's great to watch you bring these old machines back to life. Will you make a video to showcase them all in a collection?
For the stress mark on the damaged corner, try holding the plastic over the spout of a boiling kettle. It sounds weird but it should heat the plastic to take the white out of it without warping it.
My sister had that one - transparent green on the front, transparent yellow on the back, yellow face buttons and little Australian flag print. Happy memories!
Those old paper based stickers are still holding up after that many years, wished that those Sticker for LEGO sets that are based on plastic , would hold as long...
Hey love your videos! Just a heads up for a little trick I learned, you can fix those hairline cracks in clear plastic with a “super thin” super glue that’s designed to wick into cracks like that. It provides less structural support but will get rid of the crack seen through the clear plastic (just apply it on the inside so it flows inside out, and doesn’t sit on the surface). I personally use the Stewmac brand that’s sold for guitar work. Great work, and thanks for posting!
Normally I love watching old gameboys get cleaned up and treated right, but it hurt my heart to see those stickers washed away. It's like the washing away of the console's history, especially since it had to be changed anyways due to the damage. Great work on the restoration though, these translucent consoles are so gorgeous.
Have you tried using a mild abrasive to polish the plastic/screen lenses? There's plenty of car polish that does that stuff and might do good for some of the more scratched screen lenses you sometimes have
You can make sticker removal a bit easier in the future by using plastic razor blades. They are like typical metal blades, but bend easily and won't scratch soft surfaces.
Hey man, just a little tip - you can buy plastic razor blades to remove stickers, they work the same as the conventional metal ones but they don't damage delicate material such as plastic. Car detailer's use them. Just saves you grinding down your fingernails. Sick video btw :)
You really love your fans liking all these coments, making daily videos. Just remember dont work to hard just for us. you also have to have time for yourself. Thank you for being so caring though.
These videos are always a treat to watch, they're relaxing, and we get to see all sorts of cool handheld game consoles and rare variants... along with rare stickers (which unfortunately are very difficult to preserve once they've been applied). For instance, that's no Pokemon sticker on the very bottom-- it reads "ボクらの太陽", or "Bokura no Taiyou", which is the Japanese name for "Boktai: the Sun is in Your Hand", a very unique and fun GBA game (and one of my favorite games of all time)! I've NEVER seen a Boktai sticker before, so that's pretty cool. It's kind of a shame you couldn't save it, but that's how it is with stickers, unfortunately.

I don't got a Twitter but I have gb pocket (red) and a gba sp (blue)
I have a boxed red Manchester United gameboy
Does it have to be just Gameboys? I have quite a few handhelds but only my original DMG (although it's a nice one!)
The Retro Future chapstick works well for getting stickers and sticker residue off
Hyped about that video 😲
RIP for those old Pokemon stickers, but it looks much better now.
I agree!
I love the thought that the former owner might see this video and know for sure that it was theirs
Christopher Goode that’ll be a huge regret
What if they're super rare stickers
RIP for my underwear that I had to throw away.
Dude that sponsor advertisement at the end got me laughing at 2 in the morning

Nice video! Specially that moment when you start using her favorite purple toothbrush to clean your Gameboy :)
The difference in volume between your speaking and the music makes me have to keep screwing with the volume. Maybe even the levels out a bit?
Almost all youtubers do this. Don't know why. zero f's given. But I think Retro future will adapt.

excellent job on this video! loved the balance of macro and sound and commentary. You could even add a smidge more commentary VO during the cleaning
I’d love to get myself a gameboy pocket or color. I love the emerald green one he has.
Yeah!
ebay is your best bet.
You may be better off with a Game Boy Color. Much larger library since it's still a Game Boy at the end of the day.
I also want one

To be honest, my favourite part of this video is the Joey Pecoraro music. Been listening to him for a while.

If the colour and text on the lens is on the back... brasso will polish the front surface up perfectly and remove all scratches.

Im happy to watch these vids because in this age of planned obsolescence its just nice seeing someone take care of older electronics
The emerald Gameboy Pocket is just the BMO Gameboy before that show even came out
I don’t know if you can buy Goo Gone in your local stores but it’s amazing for removing stickers and glue.
I've found UV curing glue is pretty good on translucent plastics. It "wicks" into the crack and reduces how visible it is as well as repairing.
I wonder if heat could be used to reverse the whitened part too.
Definitely get the ice blue! That was one of my favorite colors.
looks amazing! it'd be nice if I had one. when I was a kid. They were the envy in school.
Great job with this video. The music was a nice touch.
