$70 is pretty steep for all aftermarket shell, non backlit screen, and crud all over the motherboard.
Yh I got a beutiful yellow shelled gameboy for $55 in the uk with 3 game and the original screen light attachment.

AliExpress is interesting. I once complained about my wait time (6 months) and the seller sent an angry reply about how I don't matter because they have a contract with Wal Mart. Needless to say his store isn't around these days 🤣
Is reshelling a GBC really that hard? You could buy a working GBC for £35 and a shell for a £6 and you wouldn't have to wait 9 months for it
Not at all as long as you have a Triwing screwdriver. Finding a good quality plastic shell however, you have to know where to go and I'm not completely sure that I know! But this is another cheap plastic thing in the video so whatever.
Exactly. The shell on that looks fine, but probably cheap. The cheap shells often come with a decent enough screwdriver, too.
@@Projectwolfie21 you can buy good shell replacement basically everywhere nowadays, and IMHO probably of even higher quality than the ones used for the Aliexpress redurbished units. HandHeldLegend or RetroSix are what you're looking for (I reshelled a dead GBC with one of their shell kits and they are fantastic)
@@giec3484 I've been hearing worse and worse opinions of RetroSix shells as time goes on. And also that they've been stealing others work and claiming it as their own.
@@Projectwolfie21 wasn't aware of that, would be shameful for them if it was actually true.
As for the quality of their shells, I purchased several kits from them in the last months and re-shelled basically all Nintendo hand-helds (except the Micro, of course) AND a Game Gear. Quality was always top notch IMHO, except for a minor and fixable issue with the GB Pocket one. I honestly think they are very good, the only things to keep in mind are buying one of the extra screws set (the ones provided in the kits are absolute trash) and accurately checking the kit list, because not all of them come with glass screen replacement but plastic ones (which are OK but very thin and not as good as the OEM's)
Least they didn't go over the contacts with sandpaper like your other "refurb" lol.
Tip for cleaning contacts: pink pencil eraser! If it's good enough for the US Air Force, it's good enough for Game Boys 👍😁

That clingfilm situation reminds me of the time I ordered a screen off aliexpress, and it arrived in a chinese branded "tupperware" tub!

@@kylekelly5382 I'm not sure how there's any luck involved? A plastic tub is stronger than most cardboard and there was an inch of bubble wrap around the thing. I'm not sure anything COULD have damaged it unless someone kicked it across the warehouse 🙄
The quality of these vary a lot, it's a lottery. Friend got two backlit GBAs (v2 screens). One of them was a dream aside from slightly sticky L/R buttons, the other didn't even turn on and had something loose inside.

That looks like flux residue from soldering.
Also a chance it was from something spilled on the gameboy. Definitely not from UV light.

It's really hard finding quality shells online and most shells that came originally with the gameboy look really bad with a lot of scratches and scuffs. I Have at least 3 of them that I refurbished myself thanks to you and your work.

i still have the original version of this plus the carrying case. both still sparkle nicely. i remember the day i got it still. needs a nice cleaning though the buton is sticky
I actually had (and still have) two of these original GBCs as a kid. One was left in the trunk of a car for a year back in the early 2000s and it hasn't worked since :( no clue what's wrong with it as I don't have the tools to open it up.

This is really retro future because I'm watching as 2021 is upon us.
Like, a few hours retro, but it counts.
I got a refurb GBC and separately a GBA SP (both with "modern" LCD screens) from a Chinese eBay seller (same seller I bought both from coincidently) last year. About 2 weeks delivery to UK, pre COVID) Very happy with them, not opened either up though, maybe better not knowing. haha
Love the videos but where are you finding used game boys for sub $50 even for parts units are going for 50-55
My favorite part was when Elliot pulled out out the test cartridge, it's like when you're watching a Marvel movie and then there's a Stan Lee cameo.
Regarding the buttons I thought that you were nitpicking but when I saw that speaker then all the credit to the one who refurbished it was gone instantly
I always like to use a brillo pad to clean my screens.
Is it better to buy refurbished (if it was properly done) or an original like you mentioned in the beginning being they’re same price

I am pretty sure gold does not oxidized hence gold contacts dont oxidize either. Probably just scratches from the buttons or something like that.

Hi, I really like what you do! I hardly ever comment on the videos, but today I need help, I hope you can help me, I would really appreciate it.
I have made an audio amp mod, with a backlit screen and a 2000mha lipo battery, but the game boy color is unable to withstand the voltage and the console restarts with the flashcart, I have been told to install a step up, to regulate the voltage at 5v but I don't know how to install it, can you give me a hand to know where I have to solder?

this could have been worth it had it not been so dirty and had you not had to wait like the guts of a year
I don't really mind the aftermarket shells to be honest. Growing up it wasn't like we had the money to throw around on the special edition consoles, I just got one GBC and used that until I upgraded to a GBA SP, so I never had a regular GBA, and I didn't get a DSi until I went off to college and later bought an original DS with a broken hinge because I wanted to be able to transfer my Pokemon from Sapphire to Platinum (and later Platinum/Soul Silver to Black and then to Black 2).
With my GBA SP I swapped the shell to an aftermarket clear blue one because I love the look of it and the original flame red shell was worn to hell.
But I don't know that I'd swap the shell on my GBC unless I got one that was precut for an LCD screen upgrade. I love the teal color on my original GBC and it held up a lot better than the SP shell did. (And I didn't love the flame red color as much as the teal.)

I think that if it’s for sentimental reasons, i.e. you had that limited edition shell as a kid and an official one is just too expensive, then an after-market shell is fine.

Man my first gameboy was the pikachu+pichu so seeing that brings back some memories
I'd enjoy follow up videos where you properly refurbish them and put them in better shells
I can't even hold a repro gameboy / gba without the urge to throw it in the bin.

To be honest I'd just apply for a refund if it didn't arrive within 2 or 3 months as expected, that's how you play with AliExpress since most of the time if something is delayed THAT much, it means it's gone. And if it's not? Yay, surprise Christmas Gameboy.
