  • Motor1 Senior Editor Jake Holmes takes the brand new Lexus LS 500 for a spin to see if it’s enough to put the Germans on notice.

    As-tested price: $87,155
    The Lexus LS has long been synonymous with a relaxed, comfortable driving experience; generous amounts of legroom; and, of course, a straightforward luxury technologies. The all-new 2018 model looks to carry on that tradition with this LS 500.
    Longer and more spacious than before, the 2018 Lexus LS 500 offers even more technologies, as well as a new biturbocharged V6 coupled to a slick-shifting ten-speed automatic transmission. It’s quiet, its suspension is compliant, and aside from an awkward touchpad-based infotainment system, the Lexus is remarkably easy to use. What more could one want from a full-size luxury sedan?
    Then again, the segment’s three German heavyweights - the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class - have all been updated in recent years. Can the new Lexus LS stand up to those well-established nameplates? Only one way to tell: a thorough Why Buy? test.

    I buy Lexus because it doesn't break as much.
    And given that it is almost at par in terms of luxury to the other brands, I'll take reliability and near perfect luxury every time.

    Reality is Lexus makes cars that are more refined, better equipped and far more reliable than any of the competitors, Go and have a look at a 10 year old Lexus vs the competition , everything will work and Work perfect against what won’t be working in the others. They are fantastic cars. Soulless yes but for 90% of who can afford them genuinely appreciate and love the brand for a reason.

    Excellent review as always! Japanese cars are always top notch in terms of reliability. Lexus' cars age super well down the years, and they are doing a great job with the new design language.

    Is this guy a novice or what? he says the s class can pretty much drive itself like the Lexus can't? please check some other reviews and be better informed before making absurd comments as the negatives. There's no tech in any of its rivals not available on the LS even the self parking system via remote or smart phone app. It's just market dependent and available in Japan and may be a few other Asian countries. I guess with time it'll spread to other markets. He didn't even talk about the world first pedestrian detection and steering assist while keeping you in lane as much as possible available on the LS. Recently the Volvo XC 90 just killed a pedestrian while its semi autonomous system was on. You would understand how this system Lexus just innovated and put as a world first is incredibly important. They picked the ugliest colour option with the dullest interior option i have seen in this car yet to do their terrible review. You guys should step up so you don't seem biased or lacking knowledge about what you are reviewing.

      I said so already above, the self parking isn't offered in the North American market. It's great you clarified the reason being customers didn't like it and felt it was a gimmick which is applicable to all its rivals really. Very few people see the benefits of it cause it takes too much time to say the least. Those blowing up the feature in Audi which Lexus started way back in 06, just do so for bragging rights or to show off to friends. On a day to day basis very few will ever use the feature.

      Samson Okoro So true ! Really disappointed of this video, the Lexus LS 500, is much more capable, and do have better interiors than the one they show! The biggest, HUD also forgot so many things ... It's like this review isn't finished !

    • @samsonokoro5036
      @samsonokoro5036 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can bet you if it was the s class had launched or debuted the largest HUD ever in any car it would be celebrated by so many journalists as incredible piece of tech, have you seen how they blow up the S class wellness system with mood settings with climate and all? Lexus even has a more advanced climate control system that doesn't include the gimmicks with the lights and all and yet no on talks about the climate concierge system in the LS that's tech loaded with individual sensors and temperature reading for each seat controlling so much automatically. The S class is a solid car but for God sake it still has old school remote control for the entertainment system at the rear, while the BMW 7 series, the LS and the new A8 all have touch pad controls. The LS being the only one with no physical controls as an option since the Germans don't have 100% trust or reliance in their touch screen alone. When it comes to electronics the simply truth is the Germans are way behind the Japanese, look at house hold electronics for example, televisions, sound systems or bars plus a host of other electronics. The Germans, the British and so many other Europeans all manufactured various products to rival Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, JVC and all in the 90's to early 2000's. They couldn't compete cause their products weren't just as reliable throwing question marks to the quality. A lot more people prefer Mercedes mostly cause of the brand name really and i don't begrudge anyone.

    I'm sorry, but this video was not entirely accurate. After watching hordes of other new LS videos, this one has a negative undertone. It just seems like the Editor personally isn't impressed with this car at all(Bar that horrid touch pad thing..BMW driver here). That said, I miss the reliability of my last two Lexus SC coupes and don't miss the high maintenance costs of my current BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe (or my last 7er Li and 6er Coupe). I am looking more at reliability, and this guy is so biased(I literally worked as a designer for one of the German Lux companies you mentioned)..the New LS and LC look like spaceships next to most of the Germans. You sound biased. I haven't un-subscribed, yet. Please be level with us on the next ones. Cheers!

    Top tier for me would be s class a8 and 7 series. Mid tier would be LS g90 and ct6. Bottom tier would be the continental and rlx.

    • @samsonokoro5036
      @samsonokoro5036 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The LS is better than your top tiers unless you don't know much about these cars and just following what u think seems cool

    • @njack1994
      @njack1994 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samson Okoro s class sold 4 times more, 7 series over twice as many, a8 1000 less than the ls in 2017. The LS is not an attractive option to buyers as reflected by sales. Subjectively like I said to begin with I would take the a8 over the ls.

    • @samsonokoro5036
      @samsonokoro5036 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you even make sense at all? how can u be comparing 2017 stats with the LS? this new LS 500 just went on sale late February early March across North America and will go on sale in April, May and later in other regions across the globe. The 2017 Ls is the same generation Lexus had since 07 model year just updated. Why would you compare such sales? now to show you that you know very little, go back to the 07 year for Lexus and compare that generation sales in the US and North America to the s class and its rivals. Lexus outsold them all. The new S class didn't become the King of the segment till this latest generation was released for 2014 model year. Why don't you wait and we compare the sales come end of this year and beyond with all the rivals in North America. If you didn't know that Lexus has always out sold the S class in North America till this new gen s class was released in 2014 then you need to educate yourself properly. Now there's a new LS let's see what it does, just like the Lexus LC 500 outselling the Mercedes SL its rival since the LC debuted last year. Let's wait and see what 2018 brings before making unnecessary noise.

      Damn sales which gonna last longer ... McDonald's sell plenty of burgers but that don't make it good lol ... The ls competes with other top tier sedans ... that's what it was made lol

    I'm going to buck the trend here , I think the car is ugly inside and out and no V/8 option , Saw it at the New York Auto Show and i was disappointed for a car that would cost in access of 100Gs . Saw the Genesis G90 and prefer that over LS500 plus i can get a V/8 that will run on Regular gas instead of premium on the V/6 of the LS . The G90 is better looking although a little Vanilla where the LS is too extreme for my taste and not in a good way. Price wise the G90 is a relative bargain compared to the LS .

    I don’t appreciate your lies! The rear seat toe space is CRAMPED. Rear seat thigh support is TERRIBLE. The car is noisier than before. And the ride is harsher than before. Luxury in this car was down-graded.

      Longer wheelbase or not, i didn’t say u couldn’t fit. I said toes space under the seat is CRAMPED! U CAN STRETCH OUT MORE IN A NISSAN VERSA and a Hyundai Sonata SAD TO SAY.
      The ride is a DOWNGRADE! Sporty or not, you feel more bumps than before in the previous LS.

      There u go tryin to make excuses. IDIOT!! Demand better instead. The s class has excelled in something as simple and as important as toe space. Only an IDIOT would excuse this deficit especially in a luxury car. ***You’re still cute though 😘❤️🏳️‍🌈***
