Shrinking is on Apple TV where Jason Segel and Harrison Ford are therapists. I love the idea of Han Solo as a therapist. This episode covers what cognitive behavioural therapy is, the importance of the professional relationship, Adderall and how it works, and that THERAPY IS NOT HARMLESS!!!

Even though this show has some terrible therapy moments in it, I love it so much. My dad died two and a half months ago and this show is just so cathartic to watch. It gets how weird and hard life gets after someone you loved with your whole heart is now gone. It has made me feel less alone in my grief and less like nobody understands how grief effects you in so many ways.

Sorry about your loss, my uncle passed last week and he was my idol.
His family though turns out to hate me, and now I’m not even invited to the funeral
The main cause is we have the same first name and in our religion it was always some sort of bad luck to name someone after someone who is still alive.
So now I’m being punished for a name I never chose, and they make my dad pick which of his kids can come see his last brother off.
      Again, sorry about your father

@@TikTacTow Gosh, that is very harsh. I have never heard of it before so I looked it up to understand, are you a Ashkenazi Jewish faith? When I can't attend a funeral I burn a memorial candle on the stove top so that it is in a safe place and can burn out by itself. When a dear friend's son committed suicide I did that and played Rodrigues, Cold Fact as I was in a very very dark mood. The right music and candle light might help a bit.

I really, really hope you continue with this series because many (most) of the concerns you bring up here start to get addressed. Some he is called out on, others get worse before they are checked, and others you simply start to see (as an audience) how problematic they are as the consequences play out. It's excellently done.

I think that self-disclosure by a therapist, if used strategically, can be used to build trust with a patient. For example, if a patient with addiction issues learns that their therapist once struggled with the same issues and has been in recovery for a long time, that could be used as a HUGE trust-building tool. It might even help overcome resistence. The same thing might go for a retired veteran-turned therapist who has a veteran for a patient who suffers from PTSD. Of course, it has to be done with care, and it all depends on the situation.

    • @JHabc
      @JHabc ปีที่แล้ว +4

Too many addiction counselors I have worked with use their own recovery as their main treatment strategy. That’s what free 12 step and self-help groups are for, not paid professional therapy.
My first therapist spent at least half of every session talking about her or something from her life. I loved her, grew very attached to her, and it really did help me get over my terror around talking in the beginning. But I didn’t know what to expect from professional boundaries, she said she was sharing relevant information, and I should have never had to pay for sessions where she spent 20 minutes telling me the latest news about her battle with an insurance company, her supervisors, or professional board.
I spent 14 years with her was so attached that I couldn’t work with anyone else. When I couldn’t afford her prices I kept seeing her even as I was going through bankruptcy going to food pantries and borrowing money to pay my rent because I thought no one would ever understand me the way she did.
I ended up in the hospital and had never told her I was struggling with thoughts of ending myself for the 10 years I saw her because I was scared of never measuring up to her. I felt like my abuse could never be as bad as what she had been through, like my health issues would never be as grave as hers, like I would never measure up to her ability to triumph over everything.
The spell finally broke when I went back after a pause to address some pretty severe panic attacks. I mentioned that I had been hospitalized for diabetes and wanted to talk about my success in learning to manage it and my diet, all relevant to issues we had discussed for years. Instead of listening, she cut me off and spent the entire session telling me about how her friend cured his diabetes with a gluten free diet. My diabetes was life threatening, caused me to loose 50 pounds in 4 months, requires multiple daily insulin shots, constant blood sugar monitoring, and constant attention to everything I eat or drink and my level of exercise. I finally realized how absurd it all was and wondered how long I had been beating myself up for not succeeding with simplistic suggestions like a gluten free diet for very complex problems.

If it helps anyone who stopped watching the show because of the representation of therapists being shown, I have watched up to the most recent episode and the show makes it VERY clear that what the main character is doing has a negative impact of his patients. All the “rewards” he initially experiences come back to bite him in the butt in his professional life and it becomes clear that he’s going rogue because he refuses to deal with his grief and how it has impacted his relationship with his daughter. The point of the show is to show therapists are messy and human just like the rest of us, that their education and training doesn’t make them immune to acting in maladaptive ways that hurt themselves and others.

This reminds me SO MUCH of my abusive therapy experience (ex therapist has lost his license). A lot of people really really don't grasp the damage that can be done in unethical therapy relationships. It's one of the most traumatic experiences of my life, and I already had a heavy trauma history going INTO the therapy.

10 minutes in and I want to send this video to the new meds doctor I just got assigned to (my previous one, who was excellent, left). Among other things, he took a phone call from another patient in the middle of my appointment, talked over me, did the "why don't you just do x" thing (if I could "just do x" I wouldn't be here, it's called executive DYSfunction for a reason), etc.
I am now on the hunt for a new doctor because the clinic told me I couldn't switch to a different one even though I had massive issues with this guy.
It's honestly helpful seeing you react to the fictional dude doing similar things. Reassures me that I wasn't over-reacting.

Your concerns about the therapy are actually the premise of this part of the show. He's making it about himself. This does come out in a later episode. However, he has already integrated the one patient into his life, and his family's life. Movies and TV shows are all about "what if". It is not about how we replicate real life. .

I have had many a bad therapist. One ultimatum I got was to keep trying to adress things I saw in her behavior I found concerning, and, in her words, give up on ever getting better. Or try therapy without trust and do everything she said without ever questioning her...
I started with her already having past provider trauma and massive trust issues.
I didn't see any option but to do what she wanted. She destroyed me and I ended up,in a state where she had convinced me I was harming every person I came into contact regardless of my action or intention. I ended up attempting to self delete.

I'd just want to say that it seems to me that real friends can help people suffering from some form of mental issues just by being there (within a healthy limit). So, where this show seems interesting to me is when they as a therapist know that their patient has no friends and then they, as someone who wants (needs?) to help people, forget the important boundaries because they know the science and just want to prevent a bad outcome.
And, this being a show, of course has to reflect the protagonist through his patients and in that way say something about him and his problems dealing with his own mental issues.
Anyway, I found this show because I was looking for a comedy so I'm not taking it very seriously but I am happy to see Dr. Carthy talk about it.

The way the show REWARDED HIM for bad therapy had me almost dropping the show after just the first episode. I don't like bad therapy representation, but I usually ignore it since it tends to be just a few scenes in a show, but a show abou therapy with bad therapy? I watched two episodes and I liked better the second one (definitely a show about imperfect people trying to do their best when they can't), but I don't want his bad therapy to be rewarded, I don't want those boundaries broken... so I don't think this show is for me.
