Hey dude I work in the hockey rinks a few things about this glass:
1. It's about .5" - .75" thick for NHL glass
2. Glass can break from a 100MPH Slapshot, or a 50MPH slapshot. It's about how the puck hits, where it hits and even ice/building Conditions.
3. (edit) oh also they never used real glass it was that plastic you think about or tempered Glass (most come with a film/clear tint on it to hold the chunks. Before they had the glass and such widely available it was chain link fences, imagine in the brutal days of hockey just some dude pushing your face right into it

@@thebeefyhearty cheaper glass is weaker more expensive is better too, depends also on shake and stuff, if you play at a normal hockey rink in your community and watch a hit the glass doesn't really move much but watch NHL and it gives out like it bends a good amount just to be safer

The tempered tends to have some shallow cuts or just scratches. Nothing significant, but that's whoever was picking the pieces out of Van Ryn's jersey.

Just to clarify. In hockey rinks, they use either Plexiglass or Tempered glass.

So think about how hard these shots are to break glass, think about goalies WILLINGLY standing in front of these shots, and you will have a better understanding of why goalies are insane

"Why is this allowed?" Well, if the glass was as solid as the boards under it there'd be more injuries, for starters. When it shatters, it dissipates some of the impact.
It's all high impact safety glass. Similar to what a windshield is made from. When it breaks the edges are blunt. Doesn't happen very often.
Fitting that I was bored and rewatched your first 5 hockey videos in order just last night. The reactions were and still are priceless!
That last clip with Trevor Linden putting that guy through the glass was amazing. I remember seeing it live back in '94. Always knew that clip would b a highlight for many years to come!!!
It’s not real glass, it’s the same ”glass” as car windows, it doesn’t cut and it shatters in small pieces so it doesn’t hurt

@@prodICYN Yeah, that is my understanding too .. but some of these in the video don't break like that, the one with Sedin clearly looks like it is the wrong kind of glass. That scares me .. because you'll only know once it breaks.

Review the history of the goalie mask. You will be impressed and shocked how it was and how far it has come. There was a time when goaltending had no masks.... Think about that for a second.
There was also a time when most hockey stars were toothless lol
The weird thing, when goalies were playing without a mask, taking slapshots in the face, they were still considered the "wimpy" guy on the team.

That's funny I was at the game when Doug Gilmour broke the glass after he got a penalty. Funny thing is the crew brought out the wrong pane of replacement glass and had to go fetch a new one, took about 30 minutes total. The crowd booed the workers when we realized they had brought out the wrong piece haha

Took like fifty stitches! Plexi glass was installed, and the glass broke less( still happens) but at least they aren't as hurt
I work at an NHL arena and we take the glass out for concerts. They aren't light, It takes a crew of about 6 to take out the big pieces. Back in the day it was normal glass but not now a days. Now it's either a plexiglass or they use tempered glass which are both very hard to break.
i worked at the MTS center in Winnipeg Manitoba, it use to be tempert glass they have switched over to plexy glass. Termpert glass is what you find at bussshackes doesn't make sharp, more like spiderwebs. plexy glass is just plastic. way stronger doesn't brake sharp, they are "fine" xD

I knew I recognized that. I have only seen the glass break twice in a game but the same spot was crazy to watch. Surprised it doesn't happen more often given how fast they replace the panel.

I want you to know that I enjoy your channel. I hope you like OUR insane sports. I do not ice skate, therefore ice hockey amazes me. It is super fast. I did not know this fact until I went to see a game, the puck is kept in a freezer before it is put on the ice. That helps to go fast. These men are the best in the world. I actually had a friend who broke a panel of glass with a shot! It's more about WHERE you hit the glass, not so much HOW HARD you hit the puck at the glass.
Please react to the Sedin Twins, they played their whole lives/careers together and had unmatched chemistry. Blind passes, they always knew where the other one was. Both will be in the Hall of Fame. You will hear "Daniel to Henrik" and "Henrik to Daniel" over and over again lol

That cross ice slap shot window breaker was the 2nd of 3 window breakers that game if I recall correctly
That final clip, Trevor Linden of the Vancouver Canucks putting Jeff Norton of St Louis through the glass. I was 4 rows up from that, the video doesn't do justice to how LOUD and forceful it truly was.

I went through a pane of 2 inch thick safety glass at Quebec High School in 1986. I just bumped it with my palm to scare my two friends sitting on the other side.. It had a small fault in it and just SHATTERED and fell on me while I was just slowly falling on my stomach on the other side.. 65 sutures. A sectioned Achilles Tendon (over 1/2 cut through...) ..
Just a small fault in a special, otherwise "unbreakable" glass pane on the side of a door.. Its ALL about quality control.. At least it breaks down in little pieces, not large cutting panes...
Sometimes, the glass breaks due to it having been hit with pucks many times or it's just old glass. Many times, the stantion breaks (the thing that holds the glass-sorry I can't spell). But if you look at the first hit, you notice that one stantion moves more than another. That will break glass, it can't take the twisting. But, yes, it is always a shock to players and fans. I'm sure the player who shot the puck on the second clip Feels Good (with music) because he hit the puck that hard, like Josh says. Al McGinnes (again forgive the spelling) held the record for the hardest shot. And goalies agreed that they hated to face him. He's retired now and I think the goalies he played against are much happier.
Hey Adam, t his coming weekend is the NHL All-Star weekend. They do a skill tournament to test things such as skating speed and hardest shot so I would give that a watch if you are curious.
Tempered glass is what shatters into those safe little pieces. That stuff that chunked off was plexiglass, it's a plasticy sort of thing that breaks off with dull edges.

A transition to Plexiglas (acrylic) has been mandadted since 2012. Lexan would be an even better choice but making big sheets crystal clear for the fans seems to be difficult. Don't know why, I'm wearing Lexan glasses right now and it's the standard for shatter resistant protection.

Tempered glass is actually the glass that breaks into small pieces rather than regular glass that breaks in shards. That’s why your glass in a door would be tempered or windows in bathrooms or that are low enough for someone to potentially hit and go through would need to be tempered glass as well.

Not sure if it’s just that the video is older or what, but surprised that the Pardy helmet incident from Chicago wasn’t there.
I always preferred more of the plexiglass than than the heavier thicker glass. Plexiglass has more give to it, one thing you always got told in hockey, you are going to get Hit so get as close to the boards and glass as possible because you will get a cushion effect and the person hitting you will get the worst of it. Now they got that hard crap to where your shocker wants to break when you get hit into it. You get screwed both ways now, the hit and also the glass.

They use tempered glass that shatters into a lot of pieces so that there aren't any large sharp pieces that can hurt people significantly. Maybe some small cuts and such, but nothing serious. Glass is also generally about 5/8 of an inch thick. Not thick enough that a player will just bounce off of it without it having any give, but not thin enough that it shatters with every hit. If this glass were an inch thick or such, getting hit into the glass would feel like hitting a solid wall rather than this thinner glass where you can see it wobble and move back and forth whenever they hit it. Also some rinks may use Plexiglass which is actually a type of plastic, it doesn't shatter like tempered glass, but it can crack into large sharp chunks, but more often than not the plexiglass will be forced out of its holder and just pop out before breaking.

Rink glass is generally 5/8" thick... give or take up to 1/8" depending on the rink. There are also many different types of glass (or the industry-standard term, shielding) in use.

There was a ham in Chicago where I think hjalmarsson hit a jets player and the glass broke and a fan or his wife ended up pouring beer on the jets player. the dude ends up stealing his helmet and wearing itand the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Damn the Chicago-Winnipeg one wasn’t in there where a fan takes one of the players helmets. Basically a hit lead to a fight/scrum in the corner but the glass was broken and a guy reached down and took a helmet. Also had some beer spilled on nearby fans
Hey Adam. Still loving your reactions! If I may, I want to point out something from the first video. If you watch it again, you will see the Leaf player positions his body against the wall once he knows he is going to get hit. Players are taught this when they start hitting at a younger age. This allows the force of the hit to transfer through the players body and reduces the risk of injury. (if the player is a couple feet away from the boards, the impact is worse). This brought to you from your Canadian friend with the Belfast roots.

Just remember, pucks are flying at 100mphs. And by the way, the first hit by Lucic was legal. Van Ryn guy had the puck (just shot it away). Lucic hit him squarely with no head contact.
The glass is tempered, so when it breaks it breaks into very small pieces. This means that the glass has a less of a chance of causing major lacerations. You have to hand it to the NHL, that is a smart, prudent move.
