There’s a camera directly above the crossbar that officials can use to determine if the goalies glove enters the net, thus a goal. You can’t close your glove on the puck, causing the ref to lose sight of it and a delay of game penalty. Slapping it down and not forward is how they stop a puck in the air. Games should be enjoyed on at least a 46” hi-def screen. With the season about to start, pick a team from each division and watch the NHL Recoup of their games. It’ll really get you involved.

These men are true gladiators, and watch the excruciating pain they go to when a frozen puck is whipped against their body. It hurts. A lot. I can tell you first hand.
I played hockey, baseball, and American football growing up. I took martial arts for about 15 years. Dabbled in lacrosse (which is brutal as well). In college I played intramural rugby.
Football was extremely taxing as a safety. The hits were jarring, even though I was the person giving them. Baseball took precision timing. Rugby was, well you know how rugby is. But NOTHING was as physically exhausting as hockey. The pain tolerance, toughness required, precision, and grace required is off the charts.
We almost forget that they’re doing all of these feats whilst skating on ice.
I got my bell rung more playing hockey than anything else. I’ve had 5 concussions. 4 were from hockey. Back then they weren’t as careful with those injuries as they are now, nor as informed as to how dangerous they were. You shook it off and got back out there as quickly as you could. Bad ones and you might sit the rest of the game. Get a nasty slice? Stitch it up and play. Maybe miss a shift or two.
But I gotta say, maybe it’s because it’s my favorite to play, but there’s nothing as exhilarating as getting out on the ice and playing hockey. Pure adrenaline.

Pucks are actually frozen before they ever touch the ice. If you try to play with an unfrozen puck, it will bounce a lot and be extremely hard to control. Thus, they store the pucks in a freezer before using them in a game.

ARI - Arizona Coyotes: What a mistake, this teams entire existence is a rough patch. They've got a nice alternate jersey though.
BOS - Boston Bruins: Wowee, this is a good team, their first line is also known as the perfection line, their goalie is amazing and they have the unbreakable machine Zdeno Chara as their captain, the tallest man in the league
CAR - Carolina Hurricanes: The Canes are a young and fun team, they have a winning celebration called the Storm Surge that they do, some people think that it's juvenile and shouldn't be in the game, I think it's fun.
CHI - Chicago Blackhawks:This team is getting up there is years and they have won so many Stanley Cups. Lead by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, it's a shadow of what it used to be but used to be very very good
COL - Colorado Avalanche: This team is currently one of the best in the league, they are never out of the playoff conversation
CBJ - Columbus Blue Jackets: This team has a history of being unsuccessful and got really close but also just lost their two star players and traded away all their draft picks until 2025
DAL - Dallas Stars: A good team, good captain, a fun goalie, I just think that they're a bit boring
DET - Detroit Red Wings: The Detroit Red Wings are garbage, they are going through a rough rebuild but also had a massive dynasty like 15 years ago so they've got some die hard fans
EDM - Edmonton Oilers: This team has the best current player of hockey in the world, Connor Mcdavid. They fired their GM because he's trash and it's always okay to be mean to them because they only think about the 80s when they weren't trash
FLA - Florida Panthers: This team just signed a goalie to a 10 million dollar contract, they're also like a teenage girl, changing identity every 5 minutes
LAK - L.A Kings: The Kings used to be amazing, now they're old and mismanaged, they have their core players all signed to bad contracts until they're 40 to try and keep the boys around
MIN - Minnesota Wild: This team is complicated, they have had so man issues over the years and have a few awful contracts signed. They have a history of loosing home game 7s
MTL - Montreal Canadians: The Canadians are actually an up and coming team, they have the best goalie from 2012 and a young core who's only getting better.
NSH - Nashville Predators: Wow is this team ever good, they've got skill, they've got poise, they've got physicality and so much much more. what a team
NJD - New Jersey Devils: This team used to be good. That's the best thing I can say about them. They drafted well recently at least. Last year they scored 3 own goals in the the same game
NYI - New York Islanders: This team is looking good, last year they excelled even though their captain John Tavares left them to live his dream of playing with the Toronto Maple Leafs
NYR - New York Rangers: Another team that used to be good, they've got a new core but wont be a big threat for the next 4-5 years their goalie, Henrik Lundqvist has earned the nickname "The King" because of his skill but also he's old so he's not as good as he was
OTT - Ottawa Senators: My hometown team and also the worst team in the league and my least favourite team. They are actual garbage, they traded away their first round draft pick in a year where they finished in last place
PHI - Philadelphia Flyers: They were once a mighty team and they are currently starting to heat up again. I will always have respect for this team because they physically beat the Soviet Red Army team so bad that they tried to quit the game in the second period
PIT - Pittsburgh Penguins: Best team in recent memory, they have one of the best players in the league and of all time Sid the kid Crosby who is in his 30s. This team is damn good
SJS - San Jose Sharks: This team is starting to loose it's playoff window because of their age but they can still put pucks in the net like nobodies business.
STL - Saint Louis Blues: This team is the current Stanley cup champion. An amazing team. An absolute beauty.
TBL - Tampa Bay Lightning: This team tied the record for best regular season record of all time, they were first place in the NHL, they've got a core in their prime, they were unbeatable titans. They then got swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the playoffs.
TOR - Toronto Maple Leafs: My personal favourite team in the league, they're young, they've got power, they've got John Tavares. They were also the worst team in the league from 2005-2015. They are widely hated because their fanbase is trash and all the hockey news stations are from Toronto so when they were in the leagues basement they got more coverage than teams that deserved that coverage.
VAN - Vancouver Canucks: This team is fun, young guns, about to start making some real noise in the playoffs. After loosing in the Stanley cup finals to Boston in 2011 they had a riot that cost the city of Vancouver over 3 billion dollars
VGK - Vegas Golden Knights: This is the newest team in the league and they're also one of the better teams, in their first year of existence they made the Stanley Cup Finals
WSH - Washington Capitals: This team is also very very good, they won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and have the best goal scorer in the league on their team, Alexander Ovechkin and their goalie Braden "Holtbeast" Holtby. A force to be reckoned with.
WPG - Winnipeg Jets: It's funny that they are good now. They lost their team to Atlanta who then lost their team to Arizona so just keep in kind that they still have a chip on their shoulder because of that. A promising young core

For some context, I played amateur hockey in the UK for a year. I blocked a slap shot with the inside of my left thigh, one of the only parts of the body without padding. I had a bruise covering the inside of my thigh for 6 months. Yes, they're 6 ounces, but that's 6 ounces of solid rubber flying at you like a bullet.
Hockey is absolutely amazing, seeing your reactions to it brings back all the feelings I had when I first watched it as a kid. If you want some more fun stuff, watch some videos of the All Star weeks, those are great. Also, check out some vintage hockey, in the days before helmets were made compulsory! That stuff is brutal!

1:36 The old adage of "Keep Your Head On A Swivel" so you can avoid getting hit, or fall and land safely. You also have to account for your height back down to puck level when you aim to shoot (from Shannahan's perspective).

Quick note about Lord Stanley as well. Each player from the team gets to spend a solid day with the cup. Anywhere you feel like it. It's been on Indian reservations rowed across a lake in a canoe. It's been in the back yards of many barbques. It's been many places and done many things that's for sure.

We had first row seats. As soon as the game started and the guys began hitting the glass in front of us, my kids were hooked. One player dropped a puck over the glass for my son. Adam Couser: An NHL hockey puck is a vulcanized rubber disc that is 2.5 cm thick, 7.62 cm in diameter, and weighs about 170 grams. The pucks are kept frozen solid until used in play, which reduces the amount of bouncing the puck does. The record speed of a NHL slapshot is 175 km per hour. The record speed for NHL skating is 48 kilometers per hour, but many players can regularly skate at 32 - 40 kilometers per hour, which can make the collisions quite violent.

Canadian culture, our identity, our passion. Hockey is an expensive sport, and parents make sacrifices both in time and money so their kids can play. It is a family commitment. Skating is a major part of Hockey, and some parents have their kids learning to skate at the same time they are learning to walk, making skating as natural for them as breathing. Hi from a proud Hockey mom, from Alberta.

I played inline hockey and we played with a hollow, plastic puck (a regular puck wouldn't slide on a roller rink surface). I was wearing standard hockey boots (pretty much the same as ice hockey, but with inline wheels). I blocked a slapshot that hit me in the toe and my leg went dead from the toe to my knee for what seemed an eternity. Ice hockey pucks are solid, vulcanized rubber (and are frozen). That may not seem heavy, but they are heavy enough and can do serious damage.
