    I admit it’s hard to appreciate all of those highlights without being an avid fan already.
    Someone can see the athleticism, but amazement is reserved for the lifelong fans and players.

      @dacrosber I am 69 and have played and watched hockey since
      8 years old. This particular video is very poorly done. It does not capture the essence of the game. It tries too hard to sensationalize with very little material. To me it seems to have been done by someone who does not really have the knowledge of the game enough to portray the depth and feeling of the game. Poor effort in my view.

    I think the beauty of fighting is because it's a part of the game and the reasoning is respected. It's also so funny how hockey hits look less vicious in slow-mo.

      The beauty in the fighting is in its purpose. It is about standing up for and protecting your team-mates.
      It's purpose is to keep the other team in line as hockey is so far it is very easy to cause serious injuries to the other team. If you step out of line the other team will reminds you to keep your place.

    to me, the most beautiful thing about hockey is the sportsmanship and respect us players have for each other and the game. no matter how angry or hurt you are, you don't skip out on the handshake at the end of the game. that's a good way to lose respect. the guy who made the video you reacted too, missed out on showcasing that biggest aspect within hockey.
    hopefully you come across a video that highlights all that. take care and welcome to the world of hockey.

    One part you don’t see on the video of the Martin St.Louis/Mothers Day story is Sidney Crosby, the Captain of the opposing team, visiting Marty briefly before the game to express his condolences.
    Even though they are on different teams, and play hard against one another, they still have tremendous respect for each other.
    I think that’s part of the beauty of hockey too.

    It is the sheer _speed_ of hockey that taxes the brain so much when you play it Maddy. You have to think so quickly and calculate a 3-D chessboard with complete clarity to excel at it. Add to that the fitness that pro hockey players need to have and it is a sport like no other. Personally, I prefer to watch football for enjoyment but hockey is something else altogether.

    Hi!
    To be honest, I kinda wish the uploader of that video, neutralzonehd, were still active on TH-cam because there are a billion more (slight exaggeration) newer highlights that showcase the beauty of the sport. Also, a lot of those older hits you see in highlights videos are now illegal to make the game safer. However, there are still a lot of "safer" hits, even though some are borderline illegal. It's a matter of how you look at it and how you'd like the rules to be set up.
    That said, with the video you watched:
    For hockey fights being "beautiful", yeah, that's highly debatable. In an art form, it's.... part of the romanticization of fighting in the sport, because it is allowed even though in the NHL, players get penalized 5 minutes each and they spend time in the penalty box. In reality, it's a safety concern. You could argue the same with concussion in football, MMA, and boxing. Some people like it. Some people don't. In international hockey, players face far harsher punishments for fighting. Like, it's literally discouraged. Again, this is an element of the sport that's highly controversial. There was even recent news that the Canadian junior league in Quebec finally banned fighting. Now, to be clear, this does NOT mean that fighting is banned everywhere in the sport now. Just the league.
    But the skill, IMO, is unmatched. Not to say the other sports don't have skill, but how much harder is it to keep your balance while making a pass, scoring a goal, or, you know, getting into a fight with an opposing player? The finesse of these players alone is something to marvel at, especially with the level of talent in the modern NHL.
    If you're interested, here's a highlight reel video of Edmonton's Connor McDavid, who is currently among the best in the league:
    th-cam.com/video/4eBoTI6_1Q8/w-d-xo.html
    That man is in a league of his own when it comes to making plays, scoring, and using his speed to get away from defenders.
    One more thing: you noted the small size of the puck. That's something a lot of people notice when they watch the sport, and it took me some time to get it too. But that's why hockey is a sport where you follow the plays and not the puck itself because it's too hard to keep track of the puck.
    Glad you enjoyed the video, though! I've been watching and following for about 12, 13 years and there's no other sport that's grabbed my attention as much as hockey has.

      Fighting is part of the game. It's not a big part of the game any more. Since the lockout, the NHL has been pushing more and more to focus on skill. There aren't players like Tie Domi and Bob Probert on every team any more. There are tough guys, yeah - and fights still happen - but it's not like you can get a job in the NHL if you can't play any more.

Reminds me of another kid I know who went to the NHL had a good career and left it early to enjoy life, on a boat, catching fish. And if you know who I'm talking about he was featured in this video scoring the winning goal for the Blackhawks

  • @anniemae62
    @anniemae62 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure why Shanny (Brendan) said that about the brain surgeon but they do have 2 very sharp, double-sided blades on the end of each leg that have caused severe injuries in the past. A player can catch a puck in his hand as long as he drops it pretty much instantly and does not redirect it. The refs will let the fight go for a bit if it's fairly evenly-matched. They'll step in if it isn't or when the guys are tired or hurt. The guys are going to the penalty box regardless so might as fight it out a bit.

    • @MaddyReactions
      @MaddyReactions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooh interesting

    • @cjg2k
      @cjg2k ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaddyReactions The "Brain Surgeon" portion of his quote is related to the ability of so many players to focus on tipping the puck when it's shot toward the net. There are players, like Joe Pavelski or John Tavares, that track 90mph pucks fired from 60' from the net, and intercept it enough to change where it will go in the net - preventing the goalie from catching it. And there is also the whole "goaltenders face 30-40 shots a game, and have to keep their focus on a 3" wide, 8-9oz frozen piece of rubber that's being whipped around the rink, by 10 skaters (both teams) and STILL stop it over 90% of the time. That's some serious concentration right there.

  • @jaykanou7331
    @jaykanou7331 ปีที่แล้ว

    To answer your question about why aren’t the refs stopping this…. They wait until they have no more energy or one player is in real danger, because getting between two 6’3 220 lbs men throwing punches is a great way to catch one yourself

    @thodoo122 ปีที่แล้ว

    And yes, it is abstract. There is beauty in everything, however a biased opinion, such as what I have given myself, can see the beauty in it. A harsh, primitive beauty, that is characterized by what was mentioned in the video.
    In fairness, I don't think that Brendan Shanahan had said all of those things. I think he was quoted just what was in the intro.
    Regardless, it is a sport that separates itself from all the others. And as I've mentioned, it's a very humbling sport., built on a working class vibe and fan base.
