@@EC35-80 it’s so cool to see a Ryan Sieg fan, he’s a legit contender Week in Week out more than ever I feel like. I can’t tell you how hard I was rooting for him at Texas man that one hurt everybody
Ryan Newman almost exposed the elimination format in its first year by coming in second place in the championship race despite not winning a single race. He won his way in on points alone and managed to survive till the final 4. Finishing only a second behind Harvick
@@N4N82 That system made it worse, but it's still very possible for a winless champion to happen even with playoff points, as Matt Crafton demonstrated. It also would have happened in Cup in 1975, which honestly would have been more egregious than Harvick's 2020. Petty wins 13 out of 30, then loses the title due to a mechanical failure in the last race. To a driver with zero top three finishes.

I don't agree with the notion of 39 being any sort of "peak" age. For every example driver you can name, I can name at least two who were clearly declining at that point. Statistically speaking, when looking broadly at the 76 year history of the series, the most common age of a race winner has been 31. And pretty much every age from 29-36 look stronger as an overall group than 37-39. A few late bloomers don't change the trend. And when you consider that Kyle's brother had his last multi-win season at 36...
@@seannolan9857 that’s fair I totally understand that. I think the 39 is more skewed towards veterans of the sport who carry most of the all-time wins so the data could easily be lopsided. I used the New York Times for my source there, I’m sure there’s more there too.
I think a better way to look at it is that for the all-time greats, they have their best seasons in their late 30s because their decline isn't as drastic. No doubt the average race winner age is much lower because its usually younger guys getting 1 or 2 wins in their career than near 40 year olds. Not a hard and fast rule by any means but just my opinion :).
@@silentt-d Even limiting it to drivers with 10+ wins, the only one who had his absolute best season at 39 is Terry Labonte. Nascar itself has suffered the greatest loss due to the playoff formula. Intended to increase interest and viewers, instead has turned off droves of lifelong fans. Look at track attendance these days. Plenty of empty seats where sro was the norm pre-playoffs. A plain shame!
@@timothymooney4466 while the playoffs have definitely been a big factor of driving old fans away, I think it’s done a lot to retain new fans. @@N4N82 I didn't imply the playoffs were the only cause of de-popularity. Just that the result has been the reverse of its intent. Starting to see NASCAR in a whole new way🔥🔥
Nascar deciding to cut the season to 10 races to make it more exciting only for one guy to win 5 straight titles is so typical isn’t it

My only regret with NBC and Nascar is we never got Diffey and Dale Jr together.
