I had a biscuit made by Bert some years ago. The taste has stuck with me allllllll this time! I'm so glad she was able to get in the kitchen with me and showed me how to make them. Enjoy!
This brought back memories of the women in my family. Black culture has lost many of the passed down traditions. That lady was a breath of fresh air. Thanks for sharing!
Even in Italian families... We all learned to cook the boys did to. And canning food to going over to pop pop's house and pulling out the BALL jars... Brings back memories.. Thank you Ms. Bert....
This sweet lady makes biscuits like my momma did. Every morning we had biscuits, eggs, and either bacon, sausage, or fish, and sometimes grits. This video makes me miss my momma something fierce! Thank you!

I know just how you feel, sweetie. My mama got up every morning to get my daddy off to work by 5:30 and had him a full breakfast when he came downstairs. Eggs, bacon or sausage, ham sop gravy, white gravy, hash browns, buttermilk biscuits, fresh pot of coffee. Then we got up at 6:00 to a full breakfast. She wouldn’t let us leave the house without breakfast. This started for me from 1961 until 1974 when I graduated high school! Every day! Precious memories

My daughter hates cooking but her 11 y/o son loves cooking in the kitchen with me. I love teaching him and he says he wants to be a chef. He makes his own pizza dough from scratch and many other items. He can prepare an entire dinner for his nana, papa and mom now.
I'm 57 years old, but I learned to cook from my mom. My mother said before me and my brother were born and she and my father first married...my father couldn't do anything for himself...not even iron a shirt. She promised herself if she ever had boys she was going to teach them how to cook and clean for themselves because it was no guarantee we were going to marry a woman who knew how to do these things. She had 2 boys. Me and my brother...and we both can cook, clean, and a little sewing as well. My brother's wife couldn't cook a thing when they got married. If my brother didn't know how to cook they would've starved to death, lol.
@@greghunt7724 Wow Greg, Your mom & I had the same thoughts when it comes to rearing our sons.I to have 2 sons, I made up my mind to teach them how to cook, wash, iron, sew etc. While others viewed these as ladies work, I called them survival skills, by the same token they did things which are considered activities for boys also, like playing football, little league baseball, fishing, etc. Lol my older son married a young lady that could not cook also, my younger son is still single, & he plan & cook most of the holiday dinners @ my house.

Nowadays people think they're cooking when they take a prepared dinner out of the freezer & put it in the microwave. They're missing out on so many things - memories of cooking with mom & grandma in the kitchen. And they're missing out on flavor & the way it makes a house smell when something delicious is baking in the oven. Hopefully all of the cooking videos are inspiring people to learn to cook from scratch again.

@@deborahwhite5721 that's not why we are in a pandemic. We are in a pandemic because people are eating animals and putting these animals in horrific and dirty conditions, which breeds disease. Inevitably, the abused animals develop a virus that jumps from them to the humans who are abusing them, and then that virus mutates so that it can be passed among humans. TB, smallpox, anthrax, Ebola, etc, etc, are all caused by this same process.
*I found this channel through this video and I can’t tell you how it blessed my soul. I’m literally in tears (don’t mind me) I lost my mom and my grandma and with them they took so many recipes. I’ve always wanted my grandmas biscuit recipe but I’ll use hers and enjoy it just as much. Thank you for this video and I’ve also subscribed*
I can relate, I have 2 sons that love to eat, both of them can cook but every now & then they ask me how to prepare some of the foods I use to make when they were kids. younger son love to cook, and he usually help plan & assist with the holiday meals, sometimes he would even pay for the entire meal, lately I noticed that I've been forgetting so, I'm recording & laminating a lot of my recipes, so once I'm gone they will have them on hand.
my grandmother was from union town alabama and she dipped her biscuits in melted butter before baking yum yum 😄😄😄😄😄 and then she used alaga syrup to dip them in she called them syrups
Courtney my mother's family is from Greenville Alabama and this is exactly how my grandmother would make her biscuits as well.. I didn't like that Alaga's syrup..just preserves for me.
Hello can you make the old fashion pound cake that requires the 12 eggs confectionery sugar 1lb butter and other ingredients? My grandmother use to make this one and showed me how I lost my recipe and have been asking around for years and no one has been able to come forth
Didn’t care for these instructions confusing it would have been better if she did the biscuits herself instead of this man talking through the whole video 👎
When is very lovely, unknown woman, started talking about what it was like growing up and the recipes that are lost all I kept thinking of was PLEASE Show us them, teach us them. Many of us still like to cook from scratch and I would love to see her recipes. Someone please get this lovely lady on TH-cam before her recipes are lost forever!
new generation, Let me give you a tip that worked for me?I spent well over 20 years trying to find an amazing recipe that my neighbors from Italy, who sadly have gone back to that country and I lost touch with them, used to make.I joined a hardcore Italian cooking group on facebook.I must have had 30 variations of that recipe with in 24 hours! So I don't know what would classify This recipe be it a particular ethnic culture, or location, or perhaps the years it was from, but I'd find that type of cooking group on facebook and join. Maybe even something like recipes out grandparents used to make. But I bet you you'll find your recipe that way! I only wish I had thought of it sooner! Good luck
This video just gave me LIFE! Omgoodness Darius thank you so much for sharing this! This is what it's all about, teaching the next generation! God bless her. PS: I love her glasses!
For real! This made me laugh & cry. This is my Ma Dear. My grandmother would always say God always has a ram in the bush. Look how God works. He has just gifted me with a new grandmother. My grandmother passed away January 2019 at the age of 93 years young. I appreciate seeing you still spending that time with her because I treasured every moment with my MaDear. This video just brought me back soooo many memories, especially when she gave you that look. Now we need a video with her making the biscuits with her special touch.🤣 I am definitely going to try making these biscuits. Eye balling every ingredients.👀💞💝
Darius, I fully enjoyed you and Miss Bert's lesson on the lost art of biscuit making. It took me WAY back to when I realized I needed some REAL food after I had moved to the big city from the South. You both reminded me of the time I spent with my momma learning how to cook REAL cornbread. I miss those lessons and the fellowship we shared. One thing I know is that real cooking ain't a lost art. I can't wait to try Miss Bert's recipe!
Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. I've heard of Hoe Cakes all my life and never knew where the word came from. Thank you for explaining it to us. This made me hungry for my mom's buttermilk biscuits!
Yes you should teach your daughter! I've been wanting to create a recipe book to pass onto my children. I've been writing down some of my recipes... and if they're in the kitchen with me often, it'll be easier to execute those recipes when they read them later!

Best biscuits I ever had were made by my grand dad She is from that old-school approach (we did it this way because it worked) She is very kind and patient Thanx for the incredibly fond memories
I haven't seen anybody make biscuits like my mother used to make. Hers were made in a cast iron skillet, and they had a brown crust (which was really the only part I wanted as a kid in some sugar syrup 😋😄). Everyone loved them. She had to make them for my dad 3 times a day because he ate them with EVERY meal. After he passed, she stopped (can't blame her). I just wish I'd paid more attention to the ingredients she used, but I was only 5 when my dad died. She definitely used her hands though, but didn't roll the dough out. She took pieces in her hands and placed them in the skillet. She did use a glass as the cutter AND the roller for pie crusts and fried pies though!
She reminds me of when I watched my mom at work in the kitchen, and then she put me to work in the kitchen. My dad would come in and turn right back around, because he would have to help too. It was a "push pull" relationship with our family and my brothers and sisters. My dad was who taught us boys how to clean fish, turtles, raccoons, catfish, deer, etc., and prepare those dishes. This blessing of a lady brings back those memories of being in control of the kitchen, when she was cooking. When my dad was in control of the kitchen, my mom found it hard to not interfere. I learned alot, and I CAN THROW DOWN IN THE KITCHEN!!! Thank you Mom and Dad, who are both gone on.
Love Miss Bert! Love listening to her stories! She speaks such truth with this younger generation taking the easy way out! What therapy it is to cook! I have her biscuits in the oven as I write this! ❤️

My big momma didn’t use measurements or written recipes either. She would always say “oh you just need a pinch of this or a mess of that”. Would drive me crazy because I didn’t know how much a pinch was equivalent to. But I miss her and her cooking so much.
Reminds me of my Grandma making biscuits on the weekends for breakfast. I kind of remember her using an opened paper bag on the table with flour sprinkled on top & then she rolled out her dough & cut them & placed them on a pan & baked them. This is going to have me making some biscuits like my Grandma made. I also remember that can of Crisco. Thanks for sharing this.
Crisco was the only shortening back then. Oh, and I also remember that old tin can under the cabinet which would hold that 20lb bag of flour. The wooden bowl that the biscuits were made in. WOW!!!!
I agree the art of cooking has been lost over the years nowadays everything is quick fix or prefix I didn't know what McDonald's was when I was going up I'm 46 years old and I'm still cook everything from scratch and I do mean everything from gravies to cake mix to cornbread everything is from scratch I take the time to teach all of the kids in my family that are willing to learn and they cook for their family as I do for them and they were coming up home cooked food always tastes better because it is made with love but that's just my opinion thank you for sharing God bless take care xoxo!
Suzyqs, We are close to the same age come And I know it was not like today when there is a McDonald's and almost every town. I grew up in what I'm pretty sure he's still Westchester's Largest city in New York. And we had to drive about half an hour to get To our local McDonald's when I was a teenager.1 of my best friends was working there, so I was able to talk my aunt into driving me up as a treat. My parents were not fans LOL So they may have been around then but they weren't all that easy to get to as they are now
I also love how Darius engaged with her and shows respect ..always a plus for a man to have manners!! Darius great job on the bicuits they looked great... And what better way with room temp buddah and some strawberry preserves!!! I like peach too...but strawberry my weakness lol..jelly who?.. lol
Thank you very much for sharing this video and recipe! This reminds me of my childhood when my granny would cook homemade biscuits, and many other great foods, from scratch. Nothing today, in our processed world, can beat the quality, taste, and techniques that went into those homemade meals. I hate that many don't see the value in these activities any longer. This should have been one of the life lessons passed on. Thank you again!
Lol, I just love this video. Keeping it real. I was laughing, then I rewind it back to laugh again. That hilarious woman is the star of the show. Yes I agree that I miss my family after watching this show. Thank you for sharing 🤗

When she said that I yelled, AMEN! Blows my mind that this isn't a habit for people cooking and baking.

"We went to school, we went to church, and we played in the front yard." That's the secret to a blessed life! Thanks so much! ❤
my grandmother was from union town alabama and she dipped her biscuits in melted butter before baking yum yum 😄😄😄😄😄 and then she used alaga syrup to dip them in she called them syrups
Courtney Sandy
my grandparents liked to dip their biscuits in that syrup too. I didn't like it. I prefer preserves or honey.
Courtney my mother's family is from Greenville Alabama and this is exactly how my grandmother would make her biscuits as well.. I didn't like that Alaga's syrup..just preserves for me.
Yes, hunti, I have to have alaga syrup, that’s what I grew up on, I can’t do the other syrup
Whew ! That Alaga was so thick and sweet ! I hated it ! Definitely not for pancakes! Lol
lyrics mom I keep it in my pantry! I love it!
Miss Lady needs to have her own cooking show. I adore her.
Yes i would watch every video she put out...
Your right... She and him could have a hit cooking show...
My mom died last year at 90 years old. She taught me how to make biscuits when I was little. Sweet memories.
Sorry to hear that I know you have sweet memories
I love that the 2 cups of shortening turned into 1 cup and you played it off well. Sweet lady and you are so respectful and kind.
He asked are you going to wait for me....She responded "not really". Lol! Thanks for sharing!
CLASSIC: "Once that hoe got hot." "Cause everybody had a hoe." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 The JOYS of being Black, I LOVE IT!💝👑💝
Thank you for telling the younger people what A"hoecake" was because some believe it is made of cornmeal.
too funny
Yesss we are blessed!!!!
EVERYBODY HAD A HOE!! Love it!😂😂😂
I like to had passed out!!!!
“It’s best to get lost, so that you can find YOUR way”...LOVE that and this!
Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. I've heard of Hoe Cakes all my life and never knew where the word came from. Thank you for explaining it to us. This made me hungry for my mom's buttermilk biscuits!
This was so inspiring! I need to teach my daughter more of my recipes! THANKS for posting this! #NorthFloridaNative
Yes you should teach your daughter!
I've been wanting to create a recipe book to pass onto my children. I've been writing down some of my recipes... and if they're in the kitchen with me often, it'll be easier to execute those recipes when they read them later!
Sisters Depree and Sarah come join my Facebook food group called
mealful Kitchies
I love this old lady. She just like my grandmother. No measurements and give you the side eye if you arent listening to exactly what she tells you.
Love the lady now she can cook .from Stephen Burke
Southern girl H-Town checking in the house - Darius this biscuit video prep and stories remind me so much of baking with my belated cherished grandmother! Gratitude for sharing with us - I'm hitting your subscribe button!
Ms Bert, Thank you for sharing your family recipe and for the words of wisdom💕🌠 I'm definitely going to try these.
I LOVE THIS KIND OF COOKING OLE SCHOOL FROM OUR FAMILY MATRIACHS!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!
Best biscuits I ever had were made by my grand dad
She is from that old-school approach (we did it this way because it worked)
She is very kind and patient
Thanx for the incredibly fond memories
"You gonna wait for me?"
"uh uh, not really."
LOL!
he is so respectful I love him!!
I love homemade biscuits.. I had them every morning.. and with grits and eggs.. LoL.. such a good time..
❤️ I love her! I could sit and watch and learn from her and you Darius all day! She's a jewel 💎!
Love Miss Bert! Love listening to her stories! She speaks such truth with this younger generation taking the easy way out! What therapy it is to cook! I have her biscuits in the oven as I write this! ❤️
I So Loved This❤ Its Better to Get Lost So You Can Find Your Way❤ I Miss My Granny So Much😢 She was just like this..... And the Respect for You Elder You Have🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Darius you were great and funny cooking with her. She was such a breath of fresh air. She brought back memories of my grandmothers and grandaunts, mother, and aunts when they were cooking in the kitchen. Also passing down recipes and cooking traditions, stories of the old days with laugher and love. I miss those times dearly. Thank you so much for sharing.
You two should go on television.:)
DonnaFay he has his own network
I agree they need a cooking show together. What can we do to get this going ASAP! Food Network needs these two NOW! Come on all my TH-cam subscribers let's make this happen!!!🤑💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺💃
Biscuits with grits and meat? Oh my! Love watching the two of you.
I love this. My mother made her biscuits like this too. No measurements were needed.
I promise you they just know...
Did she use baking powder with self riding biscuits
My big momma didn’t use measurements or written recipes either. She would always say “oh you just need a pinch of this or a mess of that”. Would drive me crazy because I didn’t know how much a pinch was equivalent to. But I miss her and her cooking so much.
Thank you I rember these day
Thank you
Wow! What an honor it would be to cook in the kitchen with this beautiful elder! That is a Master Class on biscuit making and life - all heart!
My parents were not fans LOL So they may have been around then but they weren't all that easy to get to as they are now
@Suzyqs it was a figure of speech of I know what McDonald's was we just never went there 😂
It does taste better with love.
It’s such a blessing to have your elders around 🥰
Lol, I just love this video. Keeping it real. I was laughing, then I rewind it back to laugh again. That hilarious woman is the star of the show. Yes I agree that I miss my family after watching this show. Thank you for sharing 🤗
Hahaha, "Since you trying to save money", Lol, 12:08🤣😂😂😂😂
SPEAKING REAL 😭
😫
LMBO!😂
SPEAKING REAL please watch videos of Jim Nduruchi 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪
Oh how I love those pearls of wisom coming from this woman. She reminds me of my grandmother!💕
I just love this lady. So elegant, classy, and well-spoken. I love her stories of how life used to be. I was also raised in Alabama.
Old school doesn't measure they eye it..like my grandmother use to do.
Well spoken? So this comment is always made by a white person. Please stop this! I get so tired of hearing this comment when a black person speaks.
Lynn G. It doesn’t matter if she is black or white. It’s still true.
Lynn G. - It has ZERO to do with race!! Regardless of color... Speech doesn’t have a color, class doesn’t have a color, and femininity doesn’t have a color! You are making assumptions based on the color of a person’s skin, which they have no control over!! There’s a word for a person who does that.
Love this lady, funny and spicy. Reminds me of my grandmother. She gave him that look...'cause I said so...lol
Just think years and years from now you will be able to look back at these video's of you two together and have her with you for ever... God Bless her
Miss Bert is making me miss my grandmother so much. She was from Mississippi and a fantastic cook and cooked the exact same way.

OMG! I'm shedding tears of joy. This brought back memories of me making biscuits with my grandmother and her daughters {my mom and my aunt}. The young people these don't know what they are missing by choosing not to spend that quality time with their elders. Thank you for sharing this. Darius. Thank you so very much!!!

She from Mobile Alabama glad to see some one from my hometown. Old school cooking and wisdom💪🏾👐🏾. Thanks Mr. Bert for your wisdom💛💚💜
I was raised is Southern California by a Southern granma the first part of my young life. We use to help in the garland kitchen and THKFUL for what I can remember of her cooking. Unfortunately her and my mom passed 2 weeks apart when I was in middle school and all the teaching was gone other than home economics and boy/girls club basic stuff💁🏽♀️
Grandma Bert take him there....Didnt have all these fancy baking tools...Love her such a 💎
Omgosh she is such a delight! Loved hearing her stories! What I would give to learn her recipes. She is amazing. Please have her back to cook! ❤️❤️❤️
This was my first time viewing this sight and I truly enjoyed watching and look forward to making my own biscuits
I would love to see this video with just mother only and no interruptions. Sometimes it's better to just be quiet and listen. But I do understand this was a lesson and I thank you for sharing this video. I especially appreciated her storytelling of the history of family and cooking.
Oh my goodness! This is a wonderful video! So sweet and had me laughing so much! ❤ I would love to cook with both of you!
Hello Darius I love your manners toward this lady much respect reminds of how my father use to say you must say yes ma’am yes sir or no ma’am and no sir love that you are doing that old school training
I didn't understand why 4 ingredient biscuits could take almost 30 mins but now I see why..she so sweet☺️
I love this episode. Reminds me of my Aunt Odessa! She would make biscuits perfectly every time.
This entire video gave me life! Thank you for sharing this beautiful moment with us. Blessings
This has brought back so many memories for me. I have shed tears watching. Tears of gratitude. There was lost of love and laughter in the kitchen. I learned so much.
She’s precious! I’m from Alabama too. I loved this recipe! I bet she can make a delicious butter roll. Can’t find a good recipe. Tell her she’s a Joy to watch!❣️
This made me think of my Granny when she lived with me🥰 My Granny took over my house especially my kitchen lol. Lord bless her she has passed on and I miss her so much. Especially this time of year. I think of her and my Godmother while I’m cooking for my family. The recipes my Granny left me with are now family traditions. My prayer is God blesses me to do the same for my grandchildren.
Beautiful grace, Ms. Bert. Valuable knowledge passed down, when a young female was taught to be a lady. Love it!
Thank you Darius for introducing us to Bert. What a wonderful woman. She is full of common sense. I really respect that!
