      Yeah man like "drumcode" or commerical techno whatever you want to call it certainly has a lot of builds and drops henceforth hitting the cue on the first beat of the chorus will usually allign the two tracks perfectly. I would love Andrew to do maybe a tutorial on the minimal or more underground kinds of techno where there's a lack of builds and drops. Maybe even a 3 deck mix with fx? Other than that solid tutorial dude keep the good work up!

    2 years "learn alone" djing and i thought that more experienced djs really know what they're going to mix, but now i found that other people are playing and mixing what they feel at the moment and even telling themselves "maybe if i bring that in it will sound good" / "let's give it a shot", etc, and i learned that (except from knowing what buttons do) djs shouldn't really think about songs order, how are they going to bring a new track, what fx to use etc, just play what you feel at the moment, this is what i call a great tutorial, thanks for posting it m8

    I learnt to DJ techno about 15 years ago on vinyl. Back then there was no TH-cam so it was just me listening to Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills and Technasia sets and then thinking "let me try doing that". When it comes to techno, just remember, a lot of techno is "unfinished" unlike trance which comes produced and very structured. Many old techno tracks are not much more than loops, so it is up to the DJ to really layer and give the set that finished sound. Also, unlike trance it does not need to be as smooth. Some of the best techno DJs around are very raw and abrasive, like old school Clarke, Umek, etc.

    I think techno has a reputation as being ‘dark/moody’ but back in the day guys like Sims, Clarke, Umek, Bone would play really funky stuff ( and they still do). In general people tend to automatically think of industrial stuff but there’s still a lot of really great funkier/uplifting stuff being made.

    • @davefellows

    • @raphdop4954
      @raphdop4954 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those artists are more funky and upbeat than most techno acts nowadays but there's still that mechanical and cold aspect that sets it apart from house, I find 90s techno to be happier but still very unsettling

    • @davidrowan3853
      @davidrowan3853 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hard groove series Sims has released is some of the best techno about imo, its funky, groovy but still has that hardened techno sound. Don't really like melodic tech house techno wannabe stuff, and absolutely detest the trance shite Charlotte etc are playing now. Robert Hoods another decent one thats plays groovy stuff.

    Techno lovers like myself are very defensive about the use of the term since it gets thrown around carelessly quite often so thanks for making that clear and for playing real techno. For anyone wondering, techno has many sub-genres as well such as minimal, dark, Berlin, Detroit, dub, acid, industrial, melodic and psychedelic.

  • @mjdub
    @mjdub ปีที่แล้ว +7

    100% agreed mixing techno is all about being passionate. Another technique I like is when you’ve got two songs working together really well, start a 2 bar loop on both at the same time and very subtly work the filters (or other FX) not as a way to get in or out of a song but to gently alter the timbre of the sound and make it evolve. Play with it for a while and then release the loops to let the tracks continue on.

    The long awaited Techno tutorial!!! It's really nice to see you play Techno, and amazing that you played Jay Lumen!!
    I started mixing a few months before I found your channel on TH-cam. It's funny how I started to form my own routines and set-ups on the mixer then later seeing an explanation about it in ur videos. I guess that means i'm doing something right.
    I think it's also important to know, that learning how mix smooth and properly is a combination of learning from others and experimenting yourself as well. Some things you just cannot explain, you have to find them yourself while adjusting the knobs of the mixer and when timing ur effects.
    I'm currently using the DDJ-400. I have my mixer on Isolator all the time, I feel that it gives me more control over what is happening on both channels(i have to choose because i can only change it in Preferences)
    Altough I already know alot of what you explain, I still enjoy watching your videos. There always something new to learn or it makes me look at things I already know in a different perspective.
    Maybe a video about how to mix Anjunadeep/Afterlife style?(Not sure about copyright issues)
    Also, I would love to see you playing a full set. Perhaps a livestream?

    • @twistandturn02
      @twistandturn02 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I posted this to another comment but is relevant here too, I hope it helps. Warmup sets are more than just tunes selection, it’s all about creating a vibe. Be friends with promoters and club owners and have fans locally, play at parties to get a few people who will support your first early sets. Have enough tunes in your playlists that are good funky tunes that will sound great to people who are drinking but not dancing. If you can create a vibe that has an infectious groove running through the bar, including the staff, by creating a happy atmosphere you’re halfway to filling the dance floor. Look out for tapping feet, nodding heads and people grooving, when that’s running through most of the crowd, drop one ‘bigger’ tune, it’s almost guaranteed to get people onto the floor, this is where your key group of friends really helps. Assuming the venue isn’t huge, as soon as you have 10-15 people on the floor, the less confident dancers will more inclined to join in, especially if they’re more sober than later in the night. After that, it’s your skill that will keep them there. DON’T keep playing big tunes, keep it groovy and easy to dance to, allow others to catch up and join in and keep building.

    Man your tutorial is epic. I watched many many tutorials and most of the time it's really unclear what's going on, o DJ just explains 10% of the stuff they do, which again for a newbie is too hard to follow. You make it exceptionally easy to understand by having camera in perfect position and explaining each step. Keep it up good work! Loved it.

    One thing I picked up from this video was keeping the Vader up and all the eq's down and using them solely to bring in the track. I was turning the bass off but the mids and highs on while bringing the Vader volume up. I am going to go try it your way now

    • @Gunner11763
      @Gunner11763 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think that's not a great idea.. Because if you can hardly hear the music from the channel you are brining in and the for some reason it isn't in time it could sound like a train wreck until you eq it in and it can sound awful.. If you're using sync then you won't have a problem with that.. Just my two cents..

      @davidedwards3838 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gunner11763 you listen to it in your headphones first. Never ever bring in a track that you didn't listen to in your headphones first.

    Thank you so much for this video. It's great to find out I am on the right path. And I totally agree: it's about improvisation, experimenting and testing different concepts. But most of all, the key takeaway: passion for the music and for mixing. If you don't enjoy it, don't do it. Simple.

    I like your positive communication. I found this interesting, I am mainly a producer and dont bother too much about djing. Its interesting to see how tracks are beeing interpret by djs. On the floor you can very often quikly hear if the dj is in control or the track is in control, something which is hard ro describe or draw rules on. I guess it comes from many things but it defenitly seperates the novice from the pro dj. Novice tends to overdrive, pro keeps it more cool.

    I have been fooling around with djing on and off for about 2 years never really progressing until eventually i packed it in for a while. Recently upon discovering your channel i have found the motivation to give it another go. I must say i really enjoy your content. I have watched plenty of useless and dull TH-cam tutorials which only made me feel helpless. I love your positive vibe that comes off in your videos and the way you explain everything making it easy to understand, just a really refreshing experience. I’ve never been into the idea of purchasing an online course but I’m genuinely looking into buying yours right now. Just looking for a response from yourself what it offers or maybe someone else who can recommended it? Many thanks!! Keep up the good work :)

    You are a legend! You're explaining everything so well :)
    I need to get out of the belief that transitions should be so smooth that no one can hear it going from song A to song B.
    Don't know why but I have this thing in my head that I think I messed up my transition if I can hear the songs change...
    You don't care about it and it sounds great!
