I have been following Darlene Michaud for a while and what I love about her videos is she never put too much thought when she’s putting her crumb blocks together. And I think her blocks turn out amazing 👍🏼. I think when you start putting too much thought into it it takes the fun out of crumb pieces . And she does like to iron her pieces sometimes she finger presses but she irons more. And she is the Queen of crumb pieces 👍🏼
I watch Darlene too. I've started crumb quilting, following her instructions. I like the freedom of just putting random pieces together. I agree with the other comments, you're kind of overthinking it.
It was interesting hearing you talk about what and why you pick pieces and sections together and why you trim where. It provides insight into your process. I’m watching lots of scrap and crumb videos because I enjoy seeing how different people work. Then I can consider what might work for me. Thank you.
It’s definitively more time consuming to audition the pairs, I may try random for a few pieces next time and see how I like it. I so love that everyone has their unique way of crumb quilting!
I am with you on ironing. When I was in high school years ago. My home economics teacher's rule was never cross a seam without ironing first. I still use that rule.😀
I have a bin labeled "Darlene" that I toss crumbs into and then create blocks. If I lose my mojo, I dig in that bin and put random crumbs together to make blocks. I've used them to make pads for under my machines, table runners, baby blankets, and sometimes I use the crumb blocks as "fabric" for pattern pieces in bag making.
Darlene is awesome. She got me back into sewing because she is not all about the "rules" and just figures things out, which is kind of right up my ally. Thank you for the video! I like crumb quilt blocks because I like to see how much I can save and not waste.
This is nice: easy going pairing. I like your combinations. One of the first blocks you show has a triangle of gray next to black. Gives the illusion that the black flipped over. I am wealthy in yardage because of poor sewing/buying ratio. I want a crumb pile! "Quit your whining or I'll give you something to cry about!" would be appropriate for me. I need to go count my blessings that I have yardage and get sewing.
I know what you mean. Sometimes I do a project just to get the crumbs, I don’t even really care about the project. I think complaining has gotten a bad name. Go ahead and complain away!
I'm fairly new to sewing. I had a bag of scraps I kept for years and just threw them In the garbage day before yesterday when I cleaned my sewing corner. Luckily they are still in the bag and it was on top of the can still when I went back for it lol I love your way of situating the scraps. They look great

I like your approach. I always just start one and finish it. I must try making a lot of small and adding cause, cause my approach I am always looking for bigger strips to finish it off instead of making good use of my smalls. Happy quilting.
I love crumb quilting!! I make 6.5" blocks in between other projects. When i have a big enough pile, I add simple sashing between the blocks and have a crazy quilt! My nieces and nephews love them!! I sometimes fussy cut pieces and include them in the blocks and give the kids an "I spy" list. Its fun to watch them search the quilt for whats on the list! :)
@@LAUREL5784 they are fun and the kids love them :) They are also awesome for foster kids, hospitals, veterans homes, retirement homes, nursing homes, pregnancy support organizations, fire trucks, ambulanes, law enforcement, any type of disaster relief (local or abroad), church nursery's etc. Basically anywhere that needs quilts. If doing I Spy for donation quilts, I suggest laminating the I Spy list and safety pinning it to the quilt so the recipient can use it over and over. Also sometimes if I have a lot of the same colors I will do my blocks in color ways. So they would be all pink for example, but every shade of pink, and what ever designs. So they would still be super scrappy. Can you tell I love my scraps!? ❤️

I've really been enjoying crumb quilting lately. I've got quite a few large pieces made up so far. It's fun to "read" the fabrics and remember where they came from (Mom, masks, children's Christmas quilts, etc.)
Darlene M got me into crumb piecing also. I just piece random bits, I don’t straighten them either. I am extremely happy with the way it turns out. I admire the way you do it, but it is way to fussy for me. I also hate ironing.

I was sitting here finishing some crazy blocks not realizing there was a new name for It! I've been doing mono-color blocks since my scraps were already sorted like that. I just wish I had stuck to one size but even that will draw on my creativity at the end. The tiny pieces left will become a decoupage project for the 'grands'. Nothing wasted here! I love it!! Thanks for sharing. 💚
I think crazy quilts use all different kinds of fabric (satin, wool, flannel, etc). Scrap quilts are all quilting cotton with the pieces being hand size or larger. Crumb quilts are made up of teeny tiny bits of fabric. My “crumb piecing” is probably somewhere between scrap and crumb. This is my understanding at least.
Such lovely crumb blocks. I worked early this year and got all my crumbs sewn into either small Paper pieced projects or into fun strips. Thanks for sharing your version!
Crazy Quilts are made with all different kinds of fabric scraps- wool, silk, cotton, etc. Some of my pieces are small crumbs and some on the slightly larger size but all smaller than my hand. Thanks for watching Mildred!

The joy of scrappy quilting is not to think so much. I do like the ideal of making sure they look good together although it is not necessary at all but the exact trimmings before sewing is totally unnecessary. This can be so relaxing and a total change from traditional quilting.
Thank you for the tutorial - it's good to see someone else at similar work to me! I don't match crumbs, but I have found some 'ugly' 2 1/2 inch strips split them lengthwise and made checkerboard strips to use as sashing - I think that brings a cohesion to the random crumbs.
Hi - I like your videos on scrap quilting. U think aloud and show some really wonky cuts of fabric. Looks natural and matches scraps that I have. Learnt to be bold with scraps! Thanks again.
Your vlog was very well done. Everything was explained well and easy to follow. When I use crumbs or scraps I do it in a more free flowing "pick two pieces and sew" way. I don't think I would stay interested in the crumbs with all that initial cutting, however, it probably gives you a better seam that way,
I don’t think you really need to trim as much as I do. I’m a bit obsessive about it. I think most quilters really don’t trim in crumb quilting unless the prices are totally wonky. A lot of people also only finger press which saves time not having to iron. Thanks for watching Sue!

I just finished making a bunch of quilts for nieces and nephews so o had lots of crumbs. As i made my crumb blocks i just sewed together whatever I had at the time.So sometimes it came out to be 20 in square or 2 ft sq or 10 in sq and as they came out i would add them together til it was a throw size. but i wasn't happy because it looked like each piece was made separately then added on. which was exactly what it was.so I cut my top into squares shuffled them around added sashes and cornerstones. Then I was happy.
I really respect that you fixed what you didn’t like! Putting the extra time in to make something better is usually worth it. Sounds like a beautiful quilt!
have you tried using the zigzag stitch to piece together the scraps to avoid sewing right sides together then unfold then iron to flatten? (i hope you get what im trying to say.)
A traditional crumb quilt was all about using the smaller pieces left over from other quilts made or clothing. No fabric was purchased to make quilts back then. It was make out of what you have. That’s what I’m going to make out of all my scraps from all my projects and clothing I’ve made, not going to color match either, since everything I make is purple lol.
It says on my iron “Rowenta Access Steam”. I wouldn’t really recommend it. It doesn’t get hot enough unless it’s filled with water and steam on. You kind of have to put a lot of muscle into it to get a good ironing job with mine. I’m on the hunt for a really good iron. I want a really heavy one that gets really hot. If you come across a good one I’d love to hear about it.

Those are too large to be what I think of as crumbs. I think of a crumb as about anything that has at least one side no longer than 2 inches. Anything smaller gets put in a bag and I use for stuffing in pillows.
A crazy quilt is make of all different types of fabric (wool, silk, flannel, etc). This quilt is almost exactly the same as a Crazy Quilt but I only used Quilting Cotton. Great question and thanks for watching!
I was watching a Darlene Michaud video on crochet with my 5 year old daughter, who was learning to crochet and right at the end Darlene used the F-word. I added a comment, warning other viewers of the language, in case they were watching with young kids and she tore into me and was really abusive. It really put me off her and I have never watched another of her videos since. There was no need for it.
I have tried to watch 3 different Darlene Michaud videos. I had to stop all 3, for adult language, bc my 7 yr old daughter watches the videos with me. (She is learning quilting). I didnt leave any comments though. I just dont watch her channel. There are so many quilting channels that the creators are uplifting and encouraging.
I first saw you sew your BLM quilt and was horrified that you didn’t know it is a communist terrorist group of violent murderers and agitators who manipulate well meaning people to cause trouble. I wondered if you are a radical communist. But I kept watching and I have found you to be so lovable, adorable, and talented I have to overlook that original error. I watch Darlene Michaud too. Because I live only a few miles from her and I grew up surrounded by French people, her name is easy for me.😂 ♥️

By the way, I like ironing everything flat as often as possible. Use of a spray bottle and starch are also very useful.

How do you deal with the curved and angled edges to make up a squared quilt finally?
Some of these pieces are rather big for a crumb quilt. This is more like crazy quilt. There is a difference. Just my two cents.
I don't sew in the summer, when the weather is nice, but, I think I need some "Janome Therapy".
I agree Carol, Summer is my least favorite season to sew (especially since I have no AC) but I could really be happy sewing anytime of year. Thanks for watching!

No, just quilting cotton for the crumb blocks.
Those are too large to be what I think of as crumbs. I think of a crumb as about anything that has at least one side no longer than 2 inches. Anything smaller gets put in a bag and I use for stuffing in pillows.
Is this basically like a crazy quilt, just a different name
A crazy quilt is make of all different types of fabric (wool, silk, flannel, etc). This quilt is almost exactly the same as a Crazy Quilt but I only used Quilting Cotton. Great question and thanks for watching!

I love Darlene's videos but I wish she didn't keep her comments turned off.
This is excessive and crazy. But it did help me limit my scraps to donated dog beds.
I was watching a Darlene Michaud video on crochet with my 5 year old daughter, who was learning to crochet and right at the end Darlene used the F-word. I added a comment, warning other viewers of the language, in case they were watching with young kids and she tore into me and was really abusive. It really put me off her and I have never watched another of her videos since. There was no need for it.
I’m sorry you had such a bad experience with a TH-cam creator. That sounds really disheartening. Hope it didn’t discourage you from creating!
I have tried to watch 3 different Darlene Michaud videos. I had to stop all 3, for adult language, bc my 7 yr old daughter watches the videos with me. (She is learning quilting). I didnt leave any comments though. I just dont watch her channel. There are so many quilting channels that the creators are uplifting and encouraging.
I stopped watching Darlene for the same reason. Very sad for her.

I first saw you sew your BLM quilt and was horrified that you didn’t know it is a communist terrorist group of violent murderers and agitators who manipulate well meaning people to cause trouble. I wondered if you are a radical communist. But I kept watching and I have found you to be so lovable, adorable, and talented I have to overlook that original error.
I watch Darlene Michaud too. Because I live only a few miles from her and I grew up surrounded by French people, her name is easy for me.😂 ♥️
I like the trimming and ironing. Thank you. That Darlene has awfully coarse language so I refuse to watch her videos.
