Need more tutorials like this. Been tying for 40 years, and it pisses me off that flyfishermen want to make things so complicated. Cant tell you how many materials Ive pissed money away on for a cool fly to tie to never use it on the water. There are a million fly variations with cool names, but at the end of the day, you have basically 5 -7 basic patterns. Creativity of the tier is a thing, but as you said, the fish dont care. Kudos to your tutorial.
Amen to that!!! I just want to catch a fish!!! LOL!! And I figure I'll start with the "Dollar Store DIY" tying to start low budget. So, if I may ask, is there one of the mentioned brands of thread that has the most or best variety of threads that cover most general (nothing too fancy/exotic) tying tasks? I ask for the sake of the KISS rule to avoid problems with all these different companies having their own versions of the Den. and Aught sizes (Really dumb on their part). I'd also like to stick with one brand as there's not much available locally, so I'll be ordering online. Thanks in advance!!
I won't overthink it. I've got the small diameter for tiny and dry but really my main supply came from Wal Mart and Hobby Lobby which has every single colour in metallic as well...have fun
This is the single best instructional video series I've ever seen. From the module-based approach, to the time for each, topic selection, graphic design, and video combination... It's perfect! You guys did your homework. It is both a Masterclass on fly tying, and a masterclass on how to make an instructional video. Bravo!.
Hi Alex! Man I'm really enjoying these beginner videos! A lot of great information and lots of questions of mine answered. I'm John. I'm a 61 year old dude in a wheelchair as I was born with spina bifida. I love to fish and have been fishing for years but only last year started tying. Next month I'll be getting a new wheelchair that actually can go out on soft dirt and sand! Man I can't wait to get our there in it. I prefer saltwater but I've been getting more and more interested in more freshwater fishing. So I'm learning both. I even found a free class taught out here in California by my home. But here's my hard question. I'm on a fixed income. So expensive fly fishing rods are out of my grasp. I also can't get into the water to fish. Plus the way I've seen people fly fish, we'll all that line would get tangled up in my wheels. So I use spinning gear to fish my flies. So do you know anyone who does that and can I get some feedback on how to successfully catch fish using flies on spinning rods and reels? Any advice or feedback will be most appreciated! Thanks! John
Thread has been a tough one for me thanks for the information! Hooks and thread has been the hardest thing to understand for me as learning to tie flies! Both these videos have helped A LOT!!!!❤😊❤😊
This is a great tutorial for a beginner as well as those of you that are seasoned tiers. I found taking a few screenshots will be very beneficial as a quick reference to have on hand. I’m totally impressed with this project.
Thank you. This is a very helpful video. For me, it eradicated some mysteries about thread. BTW, I offer an exception to your opening statement. The original Sawyer pheasant tail nymph does not use thread. I used them the last time that I went fishing and the trout liked them. I don't have any flies without hooks, though! Thanks, again, keep the excellent videos coming.
Nice video. I've always been confused about thread. This really helped clear things up for me. Excited to hit the vise and try out everything that I learned. Thanks!
Really loved this video as i have recently started tying allot of my own flies, This will help me learn the threads and what to use on certain applications i have allot that i was given from an older Fly Fisho
I’m just getting back into fly tying after a 60 +year break. In my previous tying I always waxed the thread. I don’t see anyone doing that anymore. Is it not needed? Thanks for all your efforts, it’s getting me excited to tie again.
Hey Karl. Great question. Stoked for you to get back into it! Most name-brand thread these days come pre-waxed so you don’t have to worry about waxing it anymore. 😎🤙🏽
To be honest, I am not super familiar with cotton thread. Just try tying up a few with the thread, if it works… sweet! If not… no biggie and you can pick up a couple spools. 😎🤙🏽 We’re all about using what you got.
Well Alex, for a beginner tier that is mainly tying nymphs. And just getting into dry flys, any recommendations for thread? Probably a thought question to answer.. but any insight appreciated.
Hey team, came here to comment a business Idea. I've found that i'm buying a TON of fly tying material for various different types of flies. It seems fly tying can be categorized into types. Streamers (classic Materials), Streamers (modern materials), Soft hackles, Perdigones, classic nymphs (natural materials), modern nymphs (modern materials), Dries (modern) Classic dries (natural materials) Protein flies (eggs, worms, boobies, blobs, mops, etc) and....I cannot think of any others right now, but I'm sure there are some MY QUESTION THOUGH is will you create some kits for each of these categories? Beginner - 3-5 patterns, intermediate 5-10 patterns, and advanced 10-15 patterns. Then price them accordingly. Thoughts? I was just looking around my office and even though I have literally hundreds of materials, I only have 1 bags of partridge for soft hackles. I can make them brown, or natural. I thought of you nerds when I said to myself, good hell someone should create a kit that one could just buy which would include most everything a nerd needs to tie up a bunch of patterns for a specific genre of flies. love ya faces!
They use both the Aught and Denier systems on their spools. So same principles apply. Bigger denier, thicker thread. Smaller denier, thinner thread. Bigger aught, thinner thread. Smaller aught, thicker thread.
To add to the confusion… nylon and polyester have different densities, and since denier is based on weight - same denier of polyester and nylon will result in different ought 😅
Beads.....oh how I hate them! Tungsten is so flipping expensive compared to brass. "but it sinks faster" ugh....ok but I'm buying them of Amazon from some stupid chinesium company because I want 100 for the price of 25! is there a difference? i have no idea.

Very kind words! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this feedback. Very appreciated. And glad you are enjoying the videos! 😎🤙🏽
Thanks ! It is about time someone did this tutorial on thread sizes .
😂 Glad you enjoyed it!
This series is awesome. Been tying for years, but these videos are terrific.
Thanks Steve. Can’t tell you how much we appreciate the feedback. 👍🏽
Excellent tutorial for beginning tyers. The entire masterclass series is a worthwhile tour of the art.
Glad you found it helpful!!

You can always count on fly fishing to find an exception to the rule. Haha. Appreciate the feedback! 😎🤙🏽
As a relatively new fly tyer this was great, thread had me wrapped in knots….big thanks….
You’re very welcome. It’s a mess! Haha. Thanks for the feedback. 😎🤙🏽
I wish I had watched this video when I started fly tying... Great information, many people will find very useful.
Thanks amigo! 👍🏽
Gidday Alex. Thanks for easy to follow info.
You’re welcome Ken! Thanks for the comment.
Nice video. I've always been confused about thread. This really helped clear things up for me. Excited to hit the vise and try out everything that I learned. Thanks!
Gettir done! Appreciate the comment. 😎🤙🏽
Thank you for that chart on thread sizes. Super helpful.
You are very welcome. Glad you found it helpful!
Another color I use a ton is Olive. Also, Glo-Brite in bright orange for tag nymphs.
For sure!! Olive is definitely one of the go to colors. Appreciate the comment. 😎🤙🏽
Thanks again for all the classes. Will we see a module on wire, tensile, and other wrapping materials?
You’re very welcome! Yup, section 3 is all about beads. Section 4 is about all the other materials.
Really loved this video as i have recently started tying allot of my own flies, This will help me learn the threads and what to use on certain applications i have allot that i was given from an older Fly Fisho
Stoked to hear it. Appreciate the feedback. Let us know if we can do anything to help you on your fly tying journey. 😎🤙🏽
Been tying for 2 years. This series is filling in some gaps.
Your videos are the absolute best. Many thanks
Appreciate it a ton! Thanks for the kind feedback. 😎🤙🏽
@@venturesflyco I tried to download the free book covering fly selection but did not receive it. Tried a few times.
Amazing as always. Thank you.
I appreciate this video. This helps demystify all the variations in threads. 😅
Pumped to hear it. Glad you found the info helpful. 😎🤙🏽

Good vid. What if I have legacy materials from an old kit. I have a fair amount of cotton thread. Any significant downside to using this up?
To be honest, I am not super familiar with cotton thread. Just try tying up a few with the thread, if it works… sweet! If not… no biggie and you can pick up a couple spools. 😎🤙🏽 We’re all about using what you got.
😂😂😂 Very good, keep this sense of humor. Very well explained. Thanks.
A denier is a French coin that was used as a weight to measure silk thread. It's an old cloth standardization thing.
Also, this video series is super helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the insight. And the feedback. Appreciate it! 😎🤙🏽
Well Alex, for a beginner tier that is mainly tying nymphs. And just getting into dry flys, any recommendations for thread? Probably a thought question to answer.. but any insight appreciated.
Anything that is around 70 denier would be best for dries. Danville, Uni, UTC, Veevus, Semperfli are all great options. 😎🤙🏽
That was great info, thanks so much.
Awesome content - thanks!
You bet. Glad you’re enjoying it. 😎🤙🏽

Terrific vid. Thanks!
Thanks Charles. Glad you enjoyed.
thread sizing system for semperfli?
They use both the Aught and Denier systems on their spools. So same principles apply. Bigger denier, thicker thread. Smaller denier, thinner thread. Bigger aught, thinner thread. Smaller aught, thicker thread.
UTC is the go to thread by far. Most versatile anyway
Sometimes white thread and some sharpies is all you really need. It works for me, just one downside is you're going to run out of that thread faster
Glad to hear we aren’t preaching false info. Haha. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate you being part of the community. 😎🤙🏽
I wish I'd seen this series before i started out tying and spent a ton of cash on stuff I've not used!😂😂

Depends on the supplier. The hardest part is finding a good supplier that you can trust and meeting the minimum order quantities. 👍🏽
I am used to tie with one kind / thickness thread for a while. Than after a while making streamers I still get lost in all the types or ratings. Lol.
Yup. It can get confusing. Hope this helped clarify some things!
Here I've just been using regular old red sewing thread.
Haha if it works, it works. Impressive if you can pull it off.
for sale 30 bobbins of thread i dont need anymore ....
😅
You and about every fly tyer that makes a video misprounces "denier."
Stay away from the brand "Textream" ,it totally sucks
Good to know.
This shit is so confusing🤣
Amen. Such a mess. Hope the video helped somewhat. Haha.
@@venturesflyco the charts where amazing! Screen shot and favourited them. You guys are killing the beginner/ intermediate content🤟
