+Teegan Cathcart thanks man, I really appreciate the comment. I pride myself in spending time researching and editing to make it right. Takes longer (8-10 hours per vid and I work 50-60 hrs a week at my day job), but I want it to be interesting and informative. Thanks again for noticing 👍
I'm 46 and sold these at United Audio Centers in Aurora IL. This amp was a game changer when it came out. Amazing power in such a small design. I sold these for a living back in the day when it came out. My JL Audio rep was a cool old guy which I thought was weird for a young mans game back then. The nicest set up was an Alpine head unit with the subwoofer volume control and 3X10 JL Audio W3 box or 2 x 12W3 box. It would bang for days looked cool next to the 4 channel JL Audio AMP when mounted together. It smoked anything in its class back then. I think it is awesome it still goes for around the same money on Ebay if it is mint condition. We were one of the largest sellers of Rockford Fosgate and JL Audio made a huge impact back in the late 90's.
Now this is a step up, old school performer. No time for amps that promise and don’t deliver. Always good, all the time. You don’t have to think about it. JL Audio is a consistent performer!😊👍🏻
This amp is legit. I’ve got a 500/1 powering a JL W7 12” in a wedge factory enclosure with the aluminum bars, as well as a 300/4 powering my mids and high’s. To date - everything still slams and has not once had a single issue In the 20 years I’ve had them. Love JL.
I hear people always talk shit about JL audio but you know what they are one of the most reliable amps that make true power that you can buy ! I have owned many different models and abused the hell out of them and not once has one ever failed ! So if you want real clean power and excellent sound quality JL is hard to beat. Lastly did I mention they are very underrated ?! Great video big D wiz
JL is one of the best manufacturers to this day. I've never owned a slash amp myself, but I've seen and heard plenty and they're solid in every aspect.
hifivega I currently own two. I’m running a slash 300/4 v1 that’s still running like a champ from a previous install on my comps. (Sat in the box for around 6 years in between) I’m also running a slash 500/1 v2 on my sub. They scream quality and are built like tanks and they produce some of the cleanest rated or above power. I’ll likely never look at a different amp line besides the slash series provided JL keeps producing them.
It a good real world amp, i have the 500/1 with a 10 w7, and it soundz very clean. Not thumpy but clear and doesn't strain the electrical...... Its for grown men not young boys... its all clean power
Great review Williston I ran this slasher amp back in 2002 hooked to a 15 w3 and I always wondered what kind of power it threw down at that time it was slamming but the stuff of today is just extreme day and night difference. Your videos do prove facts thank you.
I have a jl 300/4 and also 500/1same as what u. Are showing one of the best set ups I have done I'm my cars. Love the quality of them with 6×9 jl audio in the rear and 6.5 jl audio in the front with jl tweeters on top of dash. For the bass I have 2 12 jl w3. They sound awesome always puts a smile on my face when i turn it up no distortion whats so ever. I also put in a 4 gauge jl audio wiring kit. I love jl audio I would never go anywhere else.
+jeanious2009 did a bit more at 1.6, but wow the current draw 😱. Prime example of why you would really benefit from using these at 4 ohms...light load to the electrical
I have two of these amps. I am blown away that they are actually only sending out right around the rated wattage all these years I thought they were pushing closer to a thousand Watts based on the way they perform
Tommy Clark used to live in my neighborhood in West Boca Raton, FL. I used to hear the Rocket Science van coming from blocks away... he gave my buddy and I a demo and I've been in love with car audio ever since!
Gomez561 Yes, same here! Grew up in West Boca and you always knew when Tommy was out and about. Very nice guy too! He was always glad to pull over or talk shop with anyone when he was parked. It was impossible to miss his van... both visually and audibly. Very cool to see your comment and similar experiences!
I have this amp in my SUV running a single 12 stroker in a custom pre fab box and my sub absolutely hammers I hit it up with a epic 160 and hit 143 db going to trim lab it coming next Friday. You have helped me tons with my learning and understanding of car audio. Keep the videos coming friend.
I picked up a 500/1 a while ago and have been waiting for you to make this vid for a while. I always figured it pushed out a little more then 500 watts. Its my favorite amp I've ever owned. Thanks for the vid!!
Love this amp just bought another one. People were always blown away when I showed them just a 500/1 pushing my system. Blew my friends brutus hifonics away.
I installed one of these 500/1 and a w6 for a friend few years ago and the sound quality and how hard the bass hit blew me away, this amp is highly recommended
As I noted to a comment below, I am currently running two slash amps. I’m using a 300/4 v1 from a previous install from a ways back (It sat in the original box in my spare closet for about 6 years in between installs) and it still runs like a champ. I’m using it to run my front comps (ID CXS64s & ID 69s on rear deck for some rear fill) and I’m running a slash 500/1 v2 on one sealed IDQ12 D2 v4 in my trunk. These amps are built like tanks and put out some of the cleanest at or above rated power and are light on your electrical. I cannot say anything negative about these amps and I’ll likely never look at a different line of amps provided JL continues producing them. Also, I want to give a big thumbs up to Big D for taking the time to provide us his quality content. I’m always excited when there’s a new video uploaded! The information you provide us is both very informative and entertaining. Even though my current setup will likely stay as is for some time it’s always great to see you testing a huge array of amps to help us make wise decisions based upon the information you provide all of us given that each of us have different goals in this never ending quest to obtain the sound we are looking for!
Such a simple and clean looking amp. Til this day, it's one of the better looking amps. That power supply technology was ahead of its time. You would never see an amp back then do the same power at 4ohm as well as 2ohm
Great Video! I just found your channel! I purchased mine in 2005 and its still working today Feb 2018! The best amplifier i've ever owned. The car audio shop in California Santa Clarita, Ca called SoundSations turned me on to them. Danny is one of the best car audio guys I've ever met!
Awesome brother, glad you found me! I have almost 400 videos on my channel, most are car audio related, so hope you stick around to check out some of my other stuff. I also upload a new video every week (usually Monday), so make sure you check the notification bell so you can see what I release. Thanks again!
Thanks big D, enjoyed seeing the old school footage as well at the end with the 12-12"'s in the octagon with motorization on the ppi amp rack. Motorization was cool back then.. thanks for the hard work putting this together.
+Tim Eggleton can you even imagine the hours put into that install? Vid was from 1989, Manville Smith of JL Audio allowed me to show it. Even in low Rez video it was jaw dropping, imagine seeing it in person. Thanks for watching all the way until the end 👍
It should also be noted this amplifier produced clean bass with smooth transitions between the bass tones because of its high dampening factor and low ThD.
BigDWiz Tommy Clark used to live in my neighborhood in West Boca Raton, FL. I used to hear the Rocket Science van coming from blocks away... he gave my buddy and I a demo and I've been in love with car audio ever since!
+Jesse Gunderson good friend told me his shop back in the day sold a ton of these with dual 12W6's and that combo was impressive indeed. W7's are my favorite subs. I can imagine that was quite a setup 😱
I have had that amp since the early 2000's and also have the matching 300/2. The many controls really kick ass. Also use JL speakers and subs. I'll never sell them, they work too well and give me all the power I need. I used the setup for years in an 18-wheeler, using two 13' zero gauge Monster Cable power lines hardwired directly to the 4 x 12v battery system of the truck. Was fascinating to watch your review. Thanx a bunch!
Wish I still had my JL Audio 10w5's. They were really rare and they were so badass. (Around 1994) And I loved my 500/1's that I had. They always did pretty good power and were very reliable.
During my career as an installer for HiFi Buys in the Atlanta area, I installed hundreds of these amps. Usually along with a 300/4 for mids/highs. I RARELY ever had any come back with problems. They had a ton of headroom, impressive dynamic range, and never seemed to run out of "juice" when powered properly. I miss those days... Thanks for the review BigDWiz!!!
I got my First (of 2) Eclipse Aluminum 12's from a HiFi Buys (the Kennesaw one next to Circuit City, I even have some photos from an IASCA/SLAP Show down there one time) and the Monster Cable 4 Gauge power kit I ran up until I upgraded to 0 gauge just like 2-3 years ago (if even that long), I forget where I got the second one, may have been another Hifi buys, did there used to be one over across the road from the Mall of Georgia, if there was I think that may have been where I got the second one.
DanielRichards644 Those Eclipse subs were pretty sweet! I worked at Hifi Buys on Jimmy Carter Blvd., then at the Mall of GA location. That was a great job with great people. I do miss it.
I have the same but the 250-1... No fuses... 4 gauge inputs... Won't over heat either... Underrated also... Puts out around 400 watts at any ohm... Owned since 2007 about... Was pricey but well worth the price... Highly Highly recommended...
@@urbbs09 i bumped two 8w7s as well, I started with a crossfire720 rated at 720watts @12.6v Then eventually moved to 2 JL 250/1v1 Instead of the crossfire... the jl amps sounded a bit cleaner but both were absolutely loud and clean with deep bass, I built a custom box for the subs... it was something out of legend how it sounded. The 8w7 (although expensive) is underrated in its sound range, it hit hard, deep and had crazy good response. Imagine I got both subs for $550 and they were the anniversary edition speakers after the dealer couldn't fulfill my original order for 2 refurbished units, so they had to swap out the refurbished with brand new.... I used them for a while and sold them online for a profit!! Now I'm bumping 4 jl 13w1s and 2 jl 250/1v1. Loud budget system that's clean!!
Thanks so much for doing this. I really thought I would NEVER see a slash series amp dyno'ed, and I had no idea why. Anyway, cool cool cool - I have a 250/1v2. Also, I think the slash amps got better and better looking as they revised them. Beautiful designs inside and out.
i remember i picked up a JL 1000/1 and 13w7 (in the true to spec box) at a garage sale for 60 bucks one time....that JL amp was amazing and sounded better than any other amp (barring Zapco) that I ever owned. It's now permanently a fixture in my closet because it went into low ohm mode and never came out....damn i miss running that amp....
I own this amp. I've only use JL. I will never stop using this amp. Any sub I've fed it... It ate happily. You should cover the 300/4 as well. Another good amp.
I always loved these amps personally, I love the clean simplistic design of them and the fact that they output the same power levels whether the battery is running or not
I have this amp together with a 300/4 still installed in my BMW 540 powering Diamond Audio Hex series components and coaxials and 2 JL 10w6 subs for the last 14 years.
In my 2008 Toyota Meru (A.K.A Prado 3 doors) the setup is: Pioneer AVH 3200 DVD, front stage JL ZR 6.5" and MB Quartz Reference mids, rear Pioneer TXR-800 enclosures, mids Bluefire 6.5" (Beyma replica) all this powered by JL Slash 300/4 and drived rear and front stage for open car with 2 relay. The bass original box JL Powerwedge with 2 10" W1 V2 powered by JL Slash 500/1 main wire gauge 1/0 and for each amp gauge 4.... i accept suggestions.... I love this channel
awesome video as usual. I was going to say something about the sound level but half way through the video I realized my computer was at half volume lol. A lot of my friends had that Sony head unit you showed at the end.
Finally installed mine that I bought new in the box. I’m thankful for all the controls for integration purposes but after seeing 100+ amp draw is 8awg that JL recommended enough wire? My power light dims on hits with 20’ of #8 Classy video as always man, thanks for posting.
+john wanamaker thanks bud! All done on my iPad using LumaFusion video editor. I save time and frustration not using a $3000 editing PC. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Been seeing these on Facebook marketplace going for under $200 lately. The 1000/1 are going for pretty cheap as well. Looks like I’m going to have to do a JL build in the not too distant future.
The same engineers who developed the PPI Art series amplifiers worked on the JL slash amps. They have a legit old school pedigree. There's a reason they still sell for a dollar per watt. The new 600/1 and 1200/1 are fucking monsters.
I love the slash series, work on JL amps and slash amps hold up well and are of great quality. Finally putting a 300/4 in my own car. All JL gear is nice and many like the vx and hd but my personal favorites are the slash and xd for subs.
This amp was my first high dollar audio purchase back in 2003, i had the 500/1 v1 wired up to a rockford hx2 @ 2 ohms, then an earthquake magma @ 1.5 ohms then upgraded to a jl w7. Bass notes sounded so good with this amp i regret selling it

BigDWiz nice gotta love JL Audio great sounding subwoofers and amplifiers
Solid amp ever build too lol .....500/1 still running
I’ve had this amp for 7 years. I’ve been through a couple subs and this thing is still beating the hell out of whatever I hook it up to.
Hook a JL AUDIO sub to it.. 🤷♂️
What would be your limit as far as sub size? 2 12s
These are some of the most professional amp dyno vids I've seen with lots of knowledge and all the research done, very good job

WOW! That Sony 'pullout' deck in the end brought back some memories. Had one of those around high-school.
Pick same one up rebuilt from jl about 5 years ago for my 10w7ae. Three cars later, sub and amp are still going and still impresses me to this day.

JL and DD audio
Still have and love this amp as well

Will that amp do a 1000 Watts
Awesome! I was hoping to see a slash amp get tested. I have a 500/1 on a 10W7 and 300/4 on XR seperates. Love how that system sounds.

Which one is more powerful ?
@Samuel Justo did you upgrade your alternator?
Every 500/1 I benched was around 540-560watts at 1.5-4ohm loads, the extra control features make it one badass 500watt mono amp.

I have the same but the 250-1... No fuses... 4 gauge inputs... Won't over heat either... Underrated also... Puts out around 400 watts at any ohm... Owned since 2007 about... Was pricey but well worth the price... Highly Highly recommended...
+lucifur999 get what you pay for
Easily some the cleanest sounding amps still on the market.

I’m using one right now to power a alpine r series 10 in a porter box people think I got 2 12s
I have 2 500/1 v2 pushing 2 8w7s and a 400/3 pushing c2 650s and my alpine 6×9s
@@urbbs09 i bumped two 8w7s as well, I started with a crossfire720 rated at 720watts @12.6v
Then eventually moved to 2 JL 250/1v1
Instead of the crossfire... the jl amps sounded a bit cleaner but both were absolutely loud and clean with deep bass, I built a custom box for the subs... it was something out of legend how it sounded.
I wish they still made those audio sound and security magazine as well as the wheel directories
Thanks so much for doing this. I really thought I would NEVER see a slash series amp dyno'ed, and I had no idea why. Anyway, cool cool cool - I have a 250/1v2. Also, I think the slash amps got better and better looking as they revised them. Beautiful designs inside and out.
+Jacob Frey I don't always do big amps, I do all kinds. Big, small, home, car, portable, pro. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I still got mine. In my honda. Since 2003 with no problems!!great amp!!!!!--
+ruben mendez wow, great reliability 👍
i remember i picked up a JL 1000/1 and 13w7 (in the true to spec box) at a garage sale for 60 bucks one time....that JL amp was amazing and sounded better than any other amp (barring Zapco) that I ever owned. It's now permanently a fixture in my closet because it went into low ohm mode and never came out....damn i miss running that amp....
The best video I have waited for!
+LuxorVan 🤙
They have Allways made great stuff....nice to have companies who believe in quality...
+Ryan Moore agreed. Their subwoofers are my favorite.
BigDWiz sundown are my favorite for sick bass...but daily listening and sq JL for the win...
Just bought one today for $125 so i had to look up your dyno vid. Thanks again BIG D WIZ for the content
That's a good price if it works and is cosmetically good condition
I own this amp. I've only use JL. I will never stop using this amp. Any sub I've fed it... It ate happily. You should cover the 300/4 as well. Another good amp.
+Derrice Pugh yes sir, great amplifier 🤙
I always loved these amps personally, I love the clean simplistic design of them and the fact that they output the same power levels whether the battery is running or not
I've been running a 500/1 and a 300/4 for what seems like decades
I have this amp together with a 300/4 still installed in my BMW 540 powering Diamond Audio Hex series components and coaxials and 2 JL 10w6 subs for the last 14 years.
+Jun Alcanites if it ain't broke, why fix it? Great setup there 👌
I'd love to see a dyno of the JX 1000/1 D from JL Audio. Wondering how the budget versions perform.
For just raw power at 2 ohm the JX probably performs just as well. Problem is there's a lot more to a 1000/1 slash series amp than just raw output.
This was the 1st amp I ever used to compete with back in 2002. I still have it too.
All time favorite amp. Can u test the new 600/1v3 ?? Love the channel man
Yeah! thank u very much friend! i was waiting for this review, please make one of Slash 300/4, and 10"w1v2 subs....great video!
+Alfieri Hernandez wow, great setup!! Thank you for watching and commenting
one of the most iconic beautiful amp ever is u where in to car audio heave back then then u had this amp my dad had three of them
👌😬
awesome video as usual. I was going to say something about the sound level but half way through the video I realized my computer was at half volume lol. A lot of my friends had that Sony head unit you showed at the end.
I've had the 1000/1 since 2007, that's 10yrs! Paid 900$ for it, still bangin to this day
+boss hog nice 🤘
For those who can appreciate that kind of technology. Worth every penny. More so their amplifiers.
had this with a w3v3 in a jl high output box. loved it!
I saw that van in person. So awesome
Finally installed mine that I bought new in the box. I’m thankful for all the controls for integration purposes but after seeing 100+ amp draw is 8awg that JL recommended enough wire? My power light dims on hits with 20’ of #8
Classy video as always man, thanks for posting.
I love this amp! So much I still run a 500/1 + 300/4 in my daily driver.
Great combo 🤙
Slick editing, good looking episode!
+john wanamaker thanks bud! All done on my iPad using LumaFusion video editor. I save time and frustration not using a $3000 editing PC. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awesome amp for sure, and the heritage def made their names infamous.
Been seeing these on Facebook marketplace going for under $200 lately. The 1000/1 are going for pretty cheap as well. Looks like I’m going to have to do a JL build in the not too distant future.
I love that u do these videos..
+Serial Killer I love that you watch and comment. Not to sure about that username though 😱
I have this amp running a single 12W6 and it plays cool and even no matter what
Hi , would this be a good enough to power 2 10 inch tw3 ?
I wanna see the JL slash 450/4 and the 300/4 on the dyno !!!!!’
I've gotta get one for my 12w6v1's!! Love me some JL Audio
+Aaron Baker great quality gear
Love these amp tests
I enjoyed this episode Big D. 👍👍
+Brian Patterson thanks bud. More cool stuff to come, not all Car Audio, but audio related
The same engineers who developed the PPI Art series amplifiers worked on the JL slash amps. They have a legit old school pedigree. There's a reason they still sell for a dollar per watt. The new 600/1 and 1200/1 are fucking monsters.
True
I have this same amp! Bought it a few years back only paid $250 👍🏼
They need to come out with these again
Thanks for sharing. JL makes some solid amps
+Brian Miles thanks for watching and commenting. Agreed!
Great vid as always. Love the old school vids
+james craghead thanks for watching and commenting
In 99 I built my 92 s-10 extended cab with two of the jl 500 on 6 12w6's. One amp to each set of three.
+Anthony Stinnett oh yeah, nice setup!
I love the slash series, work on JL amps and slash amps hold up well and are of great quality. Finally putting a 300/4 in my own car. All JL gear is nice and many like the vx and hd but my personal favorites are the slash and xd for subs.
Keep up the good work! I had a precision power 2350 and a pc450 few years back. If you ever get ahold of those. I'd like to see a dyno run!
+Michael Couse I had a PC2350 in once to test, but the Amp had issues. I'll test another once available.
I have one in my vett. and it's still pumping hard.
Only amps i'll only put in my car after my first 500/1!!! LOVE JL Audio!
+EZBR I use a XD500/3 in one car and a 10W7 in another. Great products
I love these amps. Have a 500:1 and a 400:4v2 in the truck. Happy as a bird
This amp was my first high dollar audio purchase back in 2003, i had the 500/1 v1 wired up to a rockford hx2 @ 2 ohms, then an earthquake magma @ 1.5 ohms then upgraded to a jl w7. Bass notes sounded so good with this amp i regret selling it
+u mother pancit! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
