Hand feeding a fledgling house sparrow

  • This not so yet independent house sparrow couldn't get off the ground yet. Maybe the extra energy from the egg yolk that I hand fed it would help it get off the ground. These house sparrows are great survivalists. I found them once in a big box warehouse, in the rice isle.

These fledgling are thrown out of the nest when they are this age so they can learn to fly. They learn to fly from the grount and the parents still drop down to feed them.

I'm not sure about that. There was one under a car for 2 days on the same spot. I saw it today lying one it's back in the heat. I picked it up and took it inside to cool off. It was feeling better and moving around. I took it back to the tree and a few hours later it was by the curb on its back again. I don't think it was being fed at all.

I found one with a huge ball of nesting material like feathers, strings, and stuff and the string was tied very tightly around his leg. I removed it because he couldn’t do anything with that stuff stuck on him, and he could get anywhere off the ground. The string was so tight around his leg that you could see what I think is the bone, and the leg is purplish, toes are curled, and the leg is stiff and cold and he can’t move it at all and keeps tripping over it. (He wasn’t bleeding at all.) I read up about it and idk if his leg will fall off or what, but it says birds can adapt to having one leg, so I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what I can do to try and help him heal, or make the process of the leg falling off easier or safer so he doesn’t start bleeding to death or anything. Any help would be appreciated 🥺

We had a sparrow fledgling just like the one in the video stuck on our balcony (we live beneath the roof where I suspect the nest is located). After reading up on the internet about how sparrows are brought up we decided not to intervene. At first we were confident that the parents were up to the task of feeding their little one. The baby seemed healthy and pooped healthy little drops of sparrow poop. However, on the morning of the third day, the little sparrow suddenly seemed weak and distressed. And litterally within a couple of minutes it died. We buried the little one under a tree in our back yard. Its parents came flying carrying food in their beaks for another hour or so, looking for their child, but finally gave up and accepted the truth. I wonder if we could have saved the little one. It was so sad and heartbreaking to see the little fellow pass away.

I started with feeding every 3-4 hours and feed him a mix of Honest Kitchen Beef dog food topper mixed with some pre soaked chia seeds and chopped up meal worms. He has not started to eat on his own yet, I have to feed him like the parent would by dropping it into his mouth.
