Personally I don’t really mind the joy-cons, but then again I also have a certified case of baby hands. The drift, however, is seriously appalling. I really hope they make some changes to the material under the stick on whatever comes next. Starting a gaming session only to realise your beloved controllers have caught the dreaded drift sickness is the absolute worst.

It's got a great battery life (80 hours is quite insane), and it can do the work, however it doesn't feel that great in your hands, needs a weird ass cable to charge, and is overall just an inferior version of the much better switch pro controller. It works, it's not bad, but why would you use it when you already have a wii u gamepad for your wii u and a switch pro controller for all other devices.

People who never had a wii u gamepad in their hands really can't understand how good it is. Sure, it looks quite funky, almost like some of those fake console leaks, but it has so many features and actually feels great in the hands. It's quite bulky, the button placement feels great, and the texture is really nice to touch. Also the number of features this has is impressive :
    - The touch screen. Now, while this wasn't revolutionary, it is really useful as a quick menu/map, and to play without the tv (a bit like a pseudo-psp/vita/switch). However, the downside of this is that the wii u has to render 2 screens, meaning it kinda tanks the perf a lot (not that the wii u is really powerful mind you).
-The gyroscope : really useful for shooters and aiming in general.
    -Mic support
    -A camera
    -Nfc support
-Tv remote : you use this on your tv without booting up the console. It's really useful, especially since the gamepad is pretty much always in the same place so you can't really lose one, unlike a tv remote.
The only thing it really lacks to be the ultimate controller is analog triggers.
Meanwhile, the joy-cons look nice, but are actually pretty shit in hand. They have some nice features, like motion controls, nfc, and hd rumble, and the ever useless ir sensor, and their main appeal (to take them off the console and play remotly) is really good, especially since you're not forced to connect them, because playing with one in each hand is really comfortable. However, in practice, they feel cheap : they are really small, the buttons are too tiny to feel comfortable for long play sessions (seriously, I can cover the entire surface of the abxy buttons with a single thumb press), they all feel like they have no weight behind them, the sticks feel like they have no range, playing horizontally is so shit it has become a joke, ... However, all that could be tolerated if it weren't for the joy-con drift. But no, the switch, the console that is on its way to become the best-selling video game console of all time, has controllers that don't function properly. All joy-cons are bound to drift at one point (which can come pretty fast, iirc my second pair lasted a year), and the drift is really strong, strong enough that I can't actually naviguate menus with my joy-con. Mind you, they not only drift, but actually sometimes can't go all the way in one direction (it's the case for my right blue joy-con). It's so bad that at one point I just said "fuck it" and bought an hori split pad pro to play in handheld mode (and btw the hori split pad pro is actually pretty good, no battery or gyro, but other than that it has great big buttons and 0 drift). From what I understand, the problem doesn't come from nintendo directly but from the guys making their controller (apparently it's why they won the lawsuit), but still come on Nintendo, in 7 years, on your most succesful console ever, you couldn't be bothered to fix this.
In other words : the joy-cons look great, but play like shit, the wii u gamepad looks shit, but plays great.
(The switch pro controller is really good tho).

The wii u gamepad is the most complete controller ever (complete mind you, not perfect). Put analog triggers and hd rumble on it, and then the only thing it wouldn't be able to do is motion gaming (and then you get the idea behind the switch). However, it has its flaws, like needing a special sensor bar separate from the wii u (seriously this little bar always felt so fragile like it would break if I put it on a suitcase), and having a short battery life. However, the two big problems with it was :
      1. The wii u had to render two screens at the same time, which meant that the processing power wasn't used at its full potential. This made the wii u feel even less powerful than the ps4 and Xbox whatever (can't remember microsoft's bullshit naming pattern), at an era where games were getting really powerful and visually impressive, and needed all the power that was available to look good. The wii u couldn't come close to matching the power of the competition, and thus lacked actual third party support.
      2. All the marketing was focused on the gamepad. It was a great controller sure, but acting like a touch screen is revolutionary when nintendo themselves already created the ds and 3ds was bullshit, and people knew it. Split touch screen is essentially good for ui, and especially menus and maps. Some games need it, like for example nintendo land, inazuma eleven, and mario maker, and on those games it's great, but those are just a few games. Overall, people didn't see why they needed a split screen, and since nintendo just focused their marketing on this, they didn't see why they needed a wii u. And as much as nintendo fans like to say "people didn't understand that the wii u was its own console", people did, they just saw that the main selling-point was bullshit.
Honestly, the wii u gamepad is great, and if it was improved upon it could be the most complete controller ever. However, thinking that people would buy a new console just because the controller had a touch screen was utterly delusional. It was also poorly timed, and a bit too ambitious. Now that graphics pretty much settled (don't try to convince me that going beyond 4K makes a real difference), and that consoles are far more powerful, rendering 2 screens at the same time might be far more viable. It wouldn't be the main selling point of a console, however it could be useful for menus, party games, and especially games that work better with a mouse (think of map games like HOI4 or EUIV). The wii u had its flaws, a lot were linked to the gamepad, however the gamepad in a vaccum is great, and people shit on it far, FAR too much.
Also yeah, joy-cons are dogshit, and I'm tired of seeing every other tierlist put them above the wii u gamepad. They are far too small and don't even work properly. I give them a 3/10, I would put them even lower than you did. The pro controller however feels great, it's a 9/10 for me.
