religion in India is like a non-chemical opiod/anesthetic that numbs
the pain of impoverishment, disenfranchisement and abuse: reading the ubiquitous Geeta Saar BS hanging from a grocery-shop wall one perfectly understands how this darkness works.

Richard Dawkins is bit of a jerk. Javed Akhtar on the other hand is a gentleman. When it comes to rational thinking, particularly how to effect positive social change, instead I look towards people like Stephen Fry, compassionate, witty, relatable, and whip smart.

Thank you Faye D'Souza for this interview. Hearty Congratulations to Mr. Jabed Akhtar on being the first Indian to receive the Richard Dawkins award. Personally it means a lot to me, as Atheism has been my style of thinking since I was about 10 years old. Soon after my 11th birthday I declared to my parents that I am not able to find any reason to believe in god.
Being a secular, humanist as a natural path from atheism, has been my 'personal is political' for a long time. Hence, Mr. Javed Akhtar recieving this award at this particular time gives me joy. It feels good, when the world news recognises him for this award, the message which goes beyond words is that there are people, in India, who are not interested in building a society centred around religious identity thrust upon a person on the basis of the household they were born.
It feels happy that as a result of this award, there is some coverage in the media on atheist, secular humanist thinking. It gives a reason to continue to hold on to hope.

Lol that's funny. Don't worry name-calling is common nowadays.
On that note, I just found out that I am a Sanghi (and literally just realized who people call as Sanghis). I can't deny it coz I visited "Gaur Brahman Sangh" a few times when I was very young, along with some others like Maheshwari Sanghs, Sindhi sanghs, Sikh Sangh's (don't remember the names)- some with my friend's family etc. I really don't think anyone is missing much since the only thing that happens there are playing games and winning prize money or gifts - at least in my experience. I always used to think each community has there Sangh but apparently, it's perceived as something discriminatory,
Although I haven't been to one in years, in MY experience, people just do it for social gatherings and no one cares if you are from any other community if you are with someone in there. Or maybe it started discriminatorily - I don't know its history - but I think it's irrelevant to the current context. Just judge people on their actions and as individuals and rather than name-calling every other group. People who think Sanghis are bad, why is that? Feel free to educate me if I am missing something!

@@azharchaudhary952 Sure, I can try to explain... I will try to explain why I think it right to believe in atheism.
      1) The theory of god has no proof. So, believing in god is like believing in Cthulu mythos or any other fantasy beings. Do not come at me, asking me to give a proof that god does not exist. This responsibility must lie on the proposer of the theory. Till the time we get a proof about the existence of a Supreme Creator, we should not put our chips in this theory.
      2) There is a book called the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I think you should give it a try. It is a bible of sorts and quite good satire on the theory of god. One more theory if you will.
      3) Now, I come more directly at your question. Think why a man rejects (sometimes, even ridicules) many other gods and chooses to believe in one particular god. Similarly, there will be people who do not believe in this man's god and ridicule it. They are able to see through the ridiculous claims of each other's religion but not their own. And no, that does not mean god does not exist. It is similar to not believing in the one-eyed people living under your skin and not believing that our brain is filled with a carrot whose leaves come out of the head in the form of hairs.
      4) In the video, Mr. Akhtar explains faith and belief which might help might help along with many other good points.
I would like to thank you for asking me this question, and not fixating on my ridicule. I hope we get something out of this religion. The ball is in your court now.

Festivals are cultural. And I this culture we have worshipping culture so we can worship anything for their qualities regardless of whether they exist or not/ living or dead. So why worry about believe? We can celebrate anything without worshipping. I am not a Christian but I don't mind going to church to pray to a higher power and celebrating Christmas or whatever but don't believe in the Bible. Most people in India are like that only, the problem arises when a person is brainwashed into believing that their identity is their "religion".
No, our identity is Indian, like Rajasthani, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil and so on. Some of our ancestors were converted so we have different names but we still follow our culture. People like Zakir Hussain, he is spiritual and treats his music as such and will play devotional songs. Hindu people visit churches and mosques all the time, all people celebrate Diwali. Belong to your nation and culture and teach religion to children (all good and bad) only after they are above 18.

Great point :"A person looks at other religions with reason and ends up criticizing them... Except for his own.. that is beyond the scrutiny of his reason.."
To this I may add.. before the existing major religions, there were thousands of religions/beliefs that were mostly overrun.. What if one of those were the right one.?? We are all then doomed...!!!

True. Who can say? And besides the truth we created god(s) out of our need, our insecurities, our desire to believe in a father figure who could save our lives ( only physically, not spiritually). Even those with faith in god never accept pain, and misery, without complaining. If He( that patriarchal figure is problematics) he created us and is benevolent and merciful, embracing misfortune should be easy. God is a convenient creation. And designed, fashioned and revered by millions in different forms. The grass is green in every shade, sometimes yellow as well, and there are words in different languages to identify it. But it each species of grass does not transmute into another form. Javed ji termed forcing belief on a child who has not reached an age where s/he can use reason, as child abuse. Apt term. It is mental abuse

Wonderful interview! Good to see Ms. D'Souza doing interviews without having to say 'Your 30 seconds starts now!' :D
