I bought a 6 pack of tomato plants and planted 2 in containers and the other 4 in the ground and I'm amazed how the container tomatoes are twice (close to 3x) the size of the ones in the ground. I'm sold on container gardening.

You are the Bird Queen, Robbie! I have been composting my kitchen scraps in pots with potting soil, cut-up paper or a cardboard, a little fertilizer and putting the pots in the garden. I keep them moist and stir them up once in a while. In about a month, I've got compost! Thanks for the idea.

Another thing that you do differently than just about everybody else is that you leave you soil very low in the container. It would be interesting to see why that helps. Maybe wind protection? Maybe more concentrated water? Maybe a higher concentration of decaying material below?

Robbie, isn't that soil amazing? That is exactly the stuff I have been harvesting from a couple of totes. I had to buy perlite to mix with it to loosen it up; so rich!

Robbie, because of you I am now using totes. Gardening is difficult here in the desert (Palm Springs), so I have to move them at times out of the direct sun. Love em. You have a better climate. I absolutely love Kitty, want to pick her up and hug her every time I see her.

Lovely! I have a compost bin full of baby papayas, thanks to you! Now I'm not sure what to do with them! Haha You may be interested to know I had planted dried papaya seeds 3 weeks before I saw your advice about planting fresh in compost. So I then I tried that since my dry seeds hadn't sprouted. Well then both sprouted the same time! The dried seeds weren't as sucessful and took about 5 extra weeks, but they did come up! Wild.

I'm glad your ants are friendly. I live in the desert, and the ants have been going in through the drain holes and taking up residence. They tunnel all through my totes and kill my plants. Watering didn't work. So I had to get them high up off the ground, and then flood them out.

This is exciting, as the perennial kale and collards don't often set seed - as i discover which of the pants do well/taste the best etc, i can select ones to take cuttings from

Do you continue to add food scraps and browns to the top of your soil in your containers as the level sinks because the content has broken down?
Does that end up burying the stalk/trunk of your plants in your containers?
Does your tulle tear easily? I bought some tulle in Australia from some fabric stores and they tear easily that you have to be really gentle with it.
I had a question. Not only do I love your methods of gardening and composting because I myself have been inspired and have used them and you cannot deny the results but I wanted to know where you get your overall knowledge of each plant? I noticed you can identify a lot of plants that are just starting out and mention a lot of interesting facts about them. Do you go out to research about them or is it just facts you have learned through trial and error?

It’s called companion gardening all plants have a different kind of plants that help them grow . Like parsley plants help tomato grow. Corn and peas, squash and corn . They have books that tell you everything about it.

I’ve just ordered some big totes to use in a difficult area of my yard. I got them for $6 AU - bargain! Your broccoli at 43:00 minutes in the yellow tote looks exactly like my green sprouting broccoli so looks like you did have a different seed there. Mine did best into the cooler months. More tender. Your homemade soil is alive but most importantly, it has all the right life tailor made for your exact location. You don't get that from bagged soil or bought inoculants.

After u hand pollinate yr zucchini female flowers with some of the male flowers , remove some of the male flowers & their stamens (all the insides of the flower), cut up pieces of mozzarella sticks, insert one into the flower & twist off - make a thick batter of flour, dash of salt & water, roll the flower in the batter & deep fry in vegetable oil - delish!

WORMS IN TOTES: Will they eat root vegetables, like beets, potatoes, carrots...??? I have only tan worms, not those pretty red wigglers you hae...I have put them in my totes and hope they are doing good things! I made compost outside of my totes in a compost tumbler...do worms still like my soil if no fresh (not decomposed) composted (aka “compost in place”) added???

I have noticed that most of your plants overwinter. How cold are your winter months? I live in Florida, and we have some winter temps when we have a few nights in the mid 30's.
Have you considered using grow bags? They are less expensive than totes and last longer (especially in the heat)
Grow bags dry out faster and have to be watered more often than totes and the totes last her several years and she likes how sturdy they are and the shape of them to grow in.
Agree with Shampoo7. I'm in FL and grow bags only work well for plants that prefer drier soil here. Or I line with a plastic bag with small holes. Also, I am a first year gardener and some of my bags have broken already.
I have a number of grow bags. I do like them for the air pruning of roots and decided to line them on the inside this year to retain more of the moisture. I really wanted a way to minimize my watering duties this time around. Especially during the deep summer. Well, forgetting to water duties, let's be honest. 😬🙄😄
I also created a hybrid slow-drip watering bottle that could be set in or next to the back, plus Mulched the top surface with crushed leaves from the deep forestry part of the park across the street.
For the liner, I cut large bird seed bags (the tarp-like ones) and covered the inner wall 75% around and left 2" of space of the wall uncovered. The very bottom of the bag is uncovered as well.
I affixed the liner by stapling it in place along the top edge of the grow bag. I suppose one could binder clip, clothespin, or sew it in place as well.
There's a grow bag brand that has that design. But since I already had grow bags, I wasn't trying to buy new ones so decided to duplicate the concept. I also had a # of feed bags to use up / repurpose.
The 'auto' slow-drip bottle is made from 2 stacked Arizona Green Tea bottles (34 oz) and my set up provides a 48 oz water reservoir capacity.
I watched a lot of DIY videos on these, but most dripped the water out too fast and left the water reservoir too exposed to faster evaporation. I also wanted a bigger drop of water to come out vs. a smaller one.
I mainly garden on an apartment balcony so had to come up with something that had a small footprint. There are a few nice 5-gallon bucket ideas, but I don't have the space for that and would have to finagle drip tube to each container. No thanks. I needed to keep it cheap and easy.
So far, the slow drip setups seem to be doing the job in helping maintain more even moisture for an extended period. Particularly when I provide a good watering and then set the drip bottle up.
I have a very short 48 secs video showing what it looks like. It's not instructional, but the components used are listed there in the description. I only posted it because someone could not visualize what I was describing.
You can try it with any of the electrolyte drink bottles. Those are very sturdy and it keeps them out of the waste stream.
I am finding that the Powerade bottles I've tried have a lesser capacity, but a an even slower drip. I'm still experimenting and trying to find out why that is. The AZ bottles just sit on a surface and seat the best together though.
What do you do if you only have MALE flowers on your squash?
If you will check,:your gourd family has male flowers first, then it puts on the female flowers. If the female flower does not pollinate- it falls off. So sometimes I help the flower to pollinate with either a Q tip or small watercolor paintbrush. Seems to help.

I can’t get the tumeric to grow. I’ve bought three packages of $7 organic at separate times over the summer and I have one small plant and nothing in the other containers. I hope that one plant has enough to use next year. Not sure how to store it over the winter or when to harvest but I’ll see if I can find the info. I’m I Oklahoma so winters aren’t extreme…..usually. It can get to single digit but not much snow. Maybe I should bring the pot in for the winter and leave it alone till next spring.

This happens here too, I know this too well, I have a friend that was a Sheriff and I have a friend that works in a grocery store and tells me how this happens daily and they can’t do anything about it, and many are not homeless
