- Starting seeds an easy way, Me and Hummingbirds here, Great way to start Seeds indoors, Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, collard, kale, watermelon, melons, lettuce and more for fast germinating in a mini wicking bed method and save time on watering your seeds. This method of using plastic Recycle type containers can quickly be set up and used to grow all kinds of seeds. Once large enough and the weather is good, out into the garden they go or transplant into pots. Yes, did this a couple months ago and forgot to launch, but I do this growing method all year to start many of my seeds, and when I am very busy, this method of starting seeds is great, I save LOTS of time not bothering to water the seeds. Makes things easy for us.

Once the garlic or celery starts growing in the water like that, do you really need to put it in soil or can you keep growing it hydroponically?
Need to put in soil - no nutrients in just water - to grow hydroponically have to add chemicals

Loved this! I winter sow in empty jugs, now instead of saving the jugs ( or throwing them away ) I can double duty and start more seeds this way. You came through again, Robbie!

Thank you for that great idea of putting the open pkgs in photo books! I file my sealed ones in categories, then alphabetically in Iris photo storage keepers as suggested by Epic Gardening. I love the mini wicking container too! Now I have to dig our milk jug out of the recycling bin! LOL!

Brilliant ideas to recycle and get the seeds sprouting the lazy way, just my speed lol. I enjoy your videos sooooo much! This was especially fun to watch. The hawk was amazing and to see and the little hummers took cover. They know you will look out for them. And the elephant garlic cracked me up too. Some of us have to buy distilled water for CPAP machines and concentrator and other appliances and the empty bottles add up. Thank you again. You have changed my life, Found 3 totes, soldering iron on order, bakery gave me free 4 gal bucket with lid, neighbor gave me small totes that the cat litter came in, etc.
Oh 1)glad you too save the older seed 2) how did I miss the garlic in plastic cup/paper towel trick? 😉I sprouted three garlic cloves that are now planted ..3) tote lids plant stakes. @@hischild3759 She made a simple frame with 3 tomato stakes and attached the corners together with L-shape fasteners of some kind that she made. Yes, she's ingenious!

I ordered my first tulle because of insects eating my brassicas and new comfrey I'm trying to get started. Would love to see a new video on saving plants by using tulle.
She has quite a few videos on how she uses tulle to protect plants and fruits. Just do a search - "Robbie and Gary tulle".
@@maydaygarden I've watched several on using tulle to keep rabbits, birds, squirrels, and deer out. I haven't found one on insects. I guess it would work the same way but thought she might have some tips.
@@conniedavidson1807 Insects can be treated in several ways organically, without harm to pets and birds.. I use food grade diatomaceous earth, neem oil and orange oil spray for ants and other intruders.

Lol I have a six cell in the green house and I dont know what i planted in it.i forgot to label it. Also if you live like me where the sun shines very bright i use pencil for my plant labels. I find permanent marker only lasts a couple of weeks. The sun bleaches it out but pencil lasts a long long time.
Interesting on the pencil, I am using my tote lids now for labels and so far so good, Thank you 😊

I have been hearing a lot about winter sowing lately. The videos I have watched about it, they used water or milk jugs to start their seedlings.
This has been wonderful, thank you! Hi to Kitty, and I'm glad those hummies came back after the hawk went home. Now I think I know why we don't get many hummies, we have eagles and hawks! Ugh. UV and fade resistant pens, who knew! No wonder mine faded! hahahaha!

If a plant is showing green, then it's growing roots. A plant cannot grow green leaves if it has not already grown roots, so of course your elephant garlic had roots. Gary's probably doesn't have any roots, or not enough yet for the plant to start growing green leaves.
Hi guys its Tina. From Indiana. I enjoy watching your videos I love all the tips and this was the first year I garden in 5 gallon buckets but my garden hasn't done that well I was using the wicking system. Next year I'll expand my garden and plant more of each kind. Do you know anything about wicking systems. ❓ Also in the last video I watched I saw dogs do you have queenland's healers I had one and she was spectacular.
This method worked for small cascading lobelia seeds. Excited to see what happens now that they are in the garden. Also a bitter kola nut has started to grow this way! Thanks Robbie.

I was looking at an old video of Gary planting Ice Cream Bean tree seedlings on the side of a hill, did they grow? If so can you take a look at them now, I'm thinking they should be fruiting. I just bought some beans this week so I'm interested to see if your ones grew.

Funny you are talking about it being early to plant. Our determinate tomatoes are finished for the summer.

I started many seeds indoor per your video using Dixie cups and seed flats. The seed flats worked great by the dixie cup was a hit and miss. Some absorb water ok but most of the others no. The dirt dried up and seeds died..

Hi Robbie, I was trying to find the video on Brussels sprouts but can’t find it, but I did exactly what you said and I had several sprout and I put them in a bucket and they been there about 3 weeks and it hasn’t grown not even a tiny bit. It’s even went thru A LOT OD RAIN I was shocked it didn’t kill the tiny little thing! What am I doing wrong bc it’s just not grown at all although it’s still alive! Any advice?
i counted the seeds...3 of one, 8 of the other, but...NOT WHAT THEY WERE...LOL

Ice plants are gorgeous flowers. They are succulents. The purple/pink bloom all summer long. Yellow only 2 weeks. In zone 5 they are perennial
Is there a name or place to purchase your photo album to store seed packets in? I have been on line looking but can't find it. Much love from Florida
I find them at the dollar stores a lot.
Another good place to look for the photo album books is at thrift stores like the Salvation Army. I have used them for years to store recipe cards. After a decade of not gardening at all, this spring we started container gardening again on our condo balcony. Last month we started using a three-ring binder photo album for keeping seeds, using it the same way as Robbie does in this video. In it, we also keep records regarding plants we buy, copies of newspaper gardening articles, print-outs, etc.
@@janetburke2739 I have a sewing machine thought about using the extra heavy page protectors and sew the size I need cut a opening slit on one side and get a 3 ring note book binder and go that route. If that makes sense.

Robbie, all you need to do is Google what time to plant particular seeds in your growing zone.
Seeds only thrive when they are supposed to be planted.....
Nature programmed them to thrive.
If you had planted ONLY SEEDS, NOT SPROUTED SEEDS... the UNSPROUTED SEEDS will stay dormant until the soil gets to the correct temperature for them to sprout underground and THRIVE.
I'm in South Florida and have Organic gardens since the 80s. I've never planted a starter plant, I've only planted seeds.... and, I've never planted seeds indoors to transplant into the garden, It isn't necessary when the seeds are planted into the ground after the last frost and covered with straw or other Organic mulch.... (NOT WOOD CHIPS in South Florida) until the seeds are ready to THRIVE. .
I heard that it is good to hire a lazy person... because they will find a fast way to get work done...lol

I see you've had a 360 degree turn around when it comes to what happens if you plant tomatoes deep. You did an earlier video where you said that if you plant tomatoe stems deep, they won't grow roots. Now you're saying they will. I think you were wrong the first time!
She said the hairs are not roots. She is correct. However, if you look closely, you can see little nobbies. It can grow roots from those and from the junctures.
@@yeevita She did say that yes, but she also went on to say that if you plant tomatoe stems deep, the hairs will not turn into roots. That is incorrect. They can and do turn into roots if you bury them.
@@SnugglesPlays Nah, the hairs do not become roots. The plant stems have knobs on them, plus roots can come from the stem breaks (like just under a leaf or where the side shoots would come from). Those are not hairs. If you wrap the stem and check, you can see the knobs break out with roots.
