First of all, run your engine hot as you can before tryig to get them off. Even if needed you can start that diesel beast whitout intake on. You can also use heatgun if needed, second tip is get an torque wrench! Set it up max 40nm and yank it whit that like in video. if it dosend move, whit that, you have to be smart, not strong. Plugs what dosend came off whit 40nm, put some engine oil/wd bath on those plugs, put intake back and let it soak 5-7 days, by driving the car and let heatcycles do the job for you. Such a great video, thanks so much for sharing the wisdom. I attempted doing my 160k mile E91 330d glow plugs but was convinced they were seized and would break so gave up. Had another go after watching this video and got all 6 out with no drama at all. Ended up using WD40 (Specialist Penetrant) and applied it 3-4 times over two days prior to removal. Even then they still felt like they were going nowhere, but after about 10 minutes (per plug) of applying tightening/loosening force (10-15nm) without any movement at all, i'd suddenly feel just a tiny bit of movement. Applied a bit more penetrant and worked backed and forward untill out 🙏🙌 Undoubtedly a bit OTT on the caution levels and took nearly nearly 30 mins per plug, but I was freekin terrified of the prospect of having to remove a snaped plug from the head 🤣 Glad I did it as all plugs were totally dead. Scanner showed fault with all 6 plugs so suspected the control module was at fault. Changed that too just to be safe.
I need to do mine and this has given me a bit of courage lol.120k F10 530d over here. Ista is giving me fault codes for the module and one glow plug. Making sure the engine is at normal operating temperature makes it much easier and BMW recommend this prior to spraying penetrating fluid.

The tighten then loosen technic is the best advice on here, definitely works, two of mine wouldn’t budge until I tightened before loosening. Also I’d recommend using a torque screwdriver rather than a torque wrench as you have a better feel for how much pressure u are putting in. Great video!
Excellent. All I would add is: I run a tiny amount of penetrating fluid in, preferably overnight prior to attacking any potentially seized thread. WD40 is better than nothing, but the best penetrating fluid can be made by making up a 50/50 mix of Acetone and Automatic Transmission Fluid. Make you own at home, you don't need much to make a lifetime's supply. A dropper bottle is the best way of applying it so it doesn't get sprayed everywhere and making a mess. As I said, use it on any thread, and be patient, leave for a good few hours if you can. If this doesn't work, heating the joint is the next best thing, but you don't want to be doing this in your engine compartment lol.
Great video!! ✌️ I did it (with my mechanic) on my '02 E39 525D Touring with 265.000Km, they were all 6 dead (all Beru, I don't know for how long they were in, I have bought the car in August 2021), 5 pulled out without issues and one literally "disassembled" itself 😅, but we pulled out super-easily with an extractor. And while I was there I removed the stupid swirl flaps (I took a 530D "swirl-less" intake manifold from the junkyard), one was stuck and loose from one side and it was ready to grenade my M57D25, luckily the EGR-PCV nastiness kept it glued in place. Ciao from Italy! 🇮🇹
Its worth mentioning that the glow plugs are also sometimes used to do a DPF regen so its defo important that they are all working properly. Just about to do this job so thank you for the advice. Last thing I wanna do is snap one..
This is interesting ..as my car showed a fault code to glow plug 4 just after a regen started ..off atm I've got the plugs but mine (well 3 of ) are under the fuel rail ggrr
That all great info... and it's easy when glow plugs are right in front of you.. Try that when they are at the back of the engine out view. With little or no space.
Nah dude I have done that aswell nothing for me :) I've done them at the back of the engine on my VW tdi I'm a professional and I've done glow plugs on probably every single manufacturer there is so I know how to work around them
Good Video. I have changed Glow plugs on a few diesels and never had an issue so far. I am hoping this is still the case when I do my ones on my current cars soon. If people changed their Glow Plugs more often than 100,000 miles it may prevent them from getting stuck in the first place! And add a little lubricant onto them when new ones go back in and plenty of WD 40 before removal allow to soak in for a few days before removing. Also a hot engine helps.
To prevent the glow plug snapping in the first place, I think it is best to use an Impact Wrench and in my opinion only use that, no other tool. The is because the reason, I think, it is more likely that an old glow plug may snap is undue side load. I'll try to explain this; So as well as the rotational torque, if you are not careful you can apply a side bending force that will cause the head of the glow plug to bend side ways a little when you apply force. This is made worst if you use longer extension bar on your wrench as this acts as a lever applying more bending force if you are not careful. I suspect it is this force that cause the glow plug head to snap. If the force can be kept purely rotational (i.e. Impact wrench) then I think the old plug will come out without snapping. What do people think agree/disagree?
Great video, very helpful 👍 I'm about to do mine on my Alpina D3 Biturbo (N47) and have been spraying them with WD40 for the last few weeks 😅 hopefully be nice and loose. Got a new beru controller but gone for Febi Bilstein plugs, read good things about them
When you install new ones is there anything tdci put on the tnreads or the actual body of the plug that would help with corrosion great knowledge by the way.
Yeah it is about the money the owner didn’t want to spend so I put it back in and the owner can change them Why am I gonna clean for someone else not my problem or my car
Thank you was bound determined to use a quarter inch impact on my mercedes glow plugs until I watched this..even had the wrong plugs in it and didn't snap a single one.
This works really well, also another good one to use is the BARDAHL Injector removal spray. Small spray over them, 1 min later popping right out with normal force ! =-)
Did this on my e61 for the pdf re gen fault but still had to change the glow plug control reley module to get re gens going again all sorted now great tip on removing them tho doc worked a treat
Thanks for this mate. I was also waiting for this video. I’m hoping changing them will initiate a dpf regen on my car. How long would you say we should leave the WD40 to soak for? On another note, can any type of vacuum pipe be used when changing them out or is there a specific type? Could you please try to make a video on doing a diesel purge or injector cleaning procedure on the post e39 models where the fuel filter is no longer in the engine bay? Thanks again for the info and the effort you put into these videos.
Yes mate I have it all planned on what I intend to do and I advise leaving them soaked for about a hour like I did and before you turn them spray again you do not have to heat up the car as others say that is all bullshit wd40 when cold or hot and just leave it to soak in and then spray again and done and mate the only vacuum pipe you can use is 3m in diameter mate but I would get 5m length of vacuum pipe that will be more then enough to do the whole car
Very helpful video. I've been told the heater plugs in my 2007 astra 1.3 diesel will have to be drilled out- costing about £120 per plug. The mechanic I use says he's afraid of breaking them. He's a very experienced guy so I trust him but is he right? Anyone? Thanks if you reply 😊
Sounds like he's covering all bases...drench them in a proper penertraiting oil for a couple of days and use a decent 6 side socket be OK...can't say they need drilling until you try

Once you’ve got them out what are the after steps do you use a ream tool or just drop the new ones in does it matter if you don’t ream them will the new ones last just as long ?
Great video, thanks. I need to change the glow plugs on my diesel land rover. Am really worried they may snap off so will use your method with lots of wd40. Do you recommend warming the engine before doing this?

Changed mine few days ago n few plugs had oil like that round them...did oil change after. Was shocked to see oil in them but guess they weren't working well enough to burn the oil off
When oil is in on them mate it means oil is entering the intake manifold in the cylinders meaning BAD VORTEX BREATHER it can pull the excess vacuum from the crankcase in turn dumping it into the cylinders fouling the plugs
@@BMWDoctor had new one put on not long ago...thats why was thinking of trying a oil catch can as egr has been removed and only way oil can get in is by crankcase that goes to air flow tube back into turbo and back into inlet. Thanks for this video, I am watching you from Turkey, I have ford focus diesel 2009, the glow plugs are all not working, the Auto repair worker tried to loosen them, but he could not! he told me that they will be broken if he loosen them, and the only way to get them out is to open half of the engine. I just got my M57 Glow plug connector head sylinder 5 burned. Is there a way you know n47 glow plug connector head will fitt or from any bmw car on my e60 m57? 2010 mod.
My wife's qashqai threw a yellow error light and the code reads faulty glow plugs. Her car is from 2014 and has 120.000 km / 74.500 miles on them only. I checked inside and 1 glow plug had really much corrosion around it. Visually the other looked fine. I have changed spark plugs in my life, but these videos scare me of changing the glow plug.. Especially with corrosion being not most likely inside, but also a small coin size around it on the block. Maybe I should just have it taking to a mechanic to do just the 1.. I saw someone having his torque wrench to 35nm when unscrewing which makes it impossible to snap of if you obviously stop when it clicks?
Yeah but only very slightly, just enough break any corrosion as Dean said in the video. I don't know of I'm right, but I imagined with the first bit of movement on the thread, the tip might still be stuck in place and flexing. Working back a forth gradually breaking it free. I may well be wrong there.
Hot engine (BMW 320d), soaked in WD40, torque wrench set to 30NM, slow and smooth as molasses forward and back, #2 still broke off on the head. Sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw.
Hi buddy Was wondering whether you could help me out. I have these 2 codes which cause the engine light to come on. When I clear the error the engine light goes off but the error remains. The engine light then returns when I restart the engine after about 2 or restarts. Here are the codes 28CF00 LIN BUS communications : no messages received by preheating unit GSG and 24CF00 air flow meter: ratio calculated to measured air mass too small Is it glow plug and maf sensor or some underlying problems that causes these 2 errors as a secondary problem. I've recently been unwell so I've only been doing short journeys and once or twice the dpf blocked error has showed up but that hasn't showed up for a few weeks now as ive started driving it more .. It's f10 525d n57 It's due in for MOT so any independent advise or help would be greatly appreciated (A bit of back ground info... timing chain issues about 18 months ago and gear box probs.. oil was changed and some issues fixed .. had some mega £££ spent on it since then EML has been on and garage said they AND the specialist they sent the car to were unable to clear the EML light... I did but not for long. So I don't have much faith plus I'm going to argue the fact that the EML has been on since they've worked on the car so I expect them to resolve it without any cost to me )
Great video. Have you had any problems with mixing a Beru controller and Bosch glowplugs? Heard it wasn't recommended but having trouble finding Beru glowplugs that fit my car in the UK. It is a E90 N57 model.
Mate it’s a common common problem they always go as when the valve cover leaks it destroys the module and the module and plugs are constantly used for the DPF regen
BMW DOCTOR! Love your channel! I have 4 new glow plugs ready to go into my Bmw 320D e90. I’m too scared to snap the old ones 😬 could you replace them for me please? You can post it on your channel if you wish 🙏 I’m a loyal subscriber btw 😉

Bmw Doctor ok thanks :) 🤞🤞 I get mine out tomorrow, tighten hard enough not crazy then loosen easily then tighten and loosen easy until you can move it freely 👌🔥 :)
I've been waiting anxiously for this video. Thank you Dean for taking time out for showing us how to remove the glow plugs effortlessly. Your absolutely right garages are scared of doing the glow plugs, but I'm sure they will learn and be more confident after watching this free video. A* Dean, which glow plugs would you recommend i.e Bosch or Beru?
Bosch mate beru are very very shit now back in them days beru was good to bmw but bmw fucked them over hence why they went to Bosch I wouldn’t trust beru they may sell you ones that will damage your car
My 330D is mapped stage one 270bhp but man it’s sluggish. I’ve literally cleaned the whole intake, egr, swirls off, new fuel filter new spark plugs. I think it’s time to try this!!!!
Its slugglsh likely because you have had the swirl flaps removed as these are used to assist air intake as a smooth vortex and prevent it from being dumped into the engine so to speak.
they are used CONSTANTLY to help the DPF REGEN so I would change them again and did you change glow plug controller at same time otherwise they wont even work
In general, this also works with rust bolts and/or nuts. It breaks the corrosion and since metal has sone stetch under tesion ability creates some, albeit very little space thus allowing a looser component, bolt or nut to turn in the thread patterns.
Not all bolts glow plugs are a total different story now I hope you guys are liking the diesel videos now mate this is all it’s gonna be for the next 6 months at least I got another 2 diesel cars coming you lot wanted it you got it

Great video and advice thanks v much! Does anyone know the correct torque setting for the new glow plugs?
Usually says in on the box of the new plugs. 8nm to 10nm for my ones
How many glow plugs does 520 diesel have? E 6 2006? Thanks
I find an interesting comment you said about the glow plugs not working well causing regenning I'm guessing more frequent regens?
I just got my M57 Glow plug connector head sylinder 5 burned. Is there a way you know n47 glow plug connector head will fitt or from any bmw car on my e60 m57? 2010 mod.
Big thanks to you man!! That's the trick for sure!!
True knowledge and finesse.💪🏾
you dun no playa what's good bruda
Thanks for the tips Doc. Very helpful!
Another great video thanks again mate!
Does it have to be glowplugs from BMW or is NGK, Denso etc just as good?
Bosch
Great tips I got 5 outta 6 on 18 year old e53 180k on the original plugs but one is spinning any tips bud
How much should it cost to get the glow plugs changed
So you tighten down on them a little and then loosen them out?
Yeah but only very slightly, just enough break any corrosion as Dean said in the video.
I don't know of I'm right, but I imagined with the first bit of movement on the thread, the tip might still be stuck in place and flexing. Working back a forth gradually breaking it free. I may well be wrong there.
i have done this job today but i did not have a Vacum line and my connector to the back of manifold have a cover on it
Engine should be cold or not?
Great tip! What size socket is the glow plug?
10mm
@@BMWDoctor legend! Will get em swapped whislt removing the swirl flaps 👍❤️
Hot engine (BMW 320d), soaked in WD40, torque wrench set to 30NM, slow and smooth as molasses forward and back, #2 still broke off on the head. Sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw.
Is it better to do them with the engine hot or cold?
Hi buddy
Was wondering whether you could help me out. I have these 2 codes which cause the engine light to come on. When I clear the error the engine light goes off but the error remains. The engine light then returns when I restart the engine after about 2 or restarts.
Here are the codes
28CF00 LIN BUS communications : no messages received by preheating unit GSG and
24CF00 air flow meter: ratio calculated to measured air mass too small
Is it glow plug and maf sensor or some underlying problems that causes these 2 errors as a secondary problem.
I've recently been unwell so I've only been doing short journeys and once or twice the dpf blocked error has showed up but that hasn't showed up for a few weeks now as ive started driving it more ..
It's f10 525d n57
It's due in for MOT so any independent advise or help would be greatly appreciated
(A bit of back ground info... timing chain issues about 18 months ago and gear box probs.. oil was changed and some issues fixed .. had some mega £££ spent on it since then EML has been on and garage said they AND the specialist they sent the car to were unable to clear the EML light... I did but not for long. So I don't have much faith plus I'm going to argue the fact that the EML has been on since they've worked on the car so I expect them to resolve it without any cost to me )
Great video mate 👍 always great video content
Cheers mate and I’m glad you are commenting your one of the first subscribed so it’s always good to see my starter subs commenting :)
Great video. Have you had any problems with mixing a Beru controller and Bosch glowplugs? Heard it wasn't recommended but having trouble finding Beru glowplugs that fit my car in the UK. It is a E90 N57 model.
Mate it’s a common common problem they always go as when the valve cover leaks it destroys the module and the module and plugs are constantly used for the DPF regen
where is your garage? is it london? I need this done by you
You said the glow plugs are only used during winter not true.
Just watched this video I have sprayed up the glow plugs with wd40 left them over night and will try to get them out in the morning wish me luck lol
How many miles on this car? My 325d had 180k miles and I don't know if they've been changed. I've ordered new Beru ones.
120k was on this car mate they are a common problem and ALWAYS fail
BMW DOCTOR! Love your channel! I have 4 new glow plugs ready to go into my Bmw 320D e90. I’m too scared to snap the old ones 😬 could you replace them for me please? You can post it on your channel if you wish 🙏 I’m a loyal subscriber btw 😉
Hey, the car is warm, or cold?
are you doing this on a warm engine>? i already removed the air intake manifold... so cant warm up the car :/
heat it with any electrical heater
Does anybody know if you MUST replace the control module with the plugs?????
does 320d f31 use glow plugs or spark plugs?
Diesel engine - glow plugs.
How many miles were on this when you changed it?
Generaly, it is recomended to change every 100.000 miles.
NGK say soak in penetrating fluid for 6 days. I've a 2007 Megane 1.5dci 205,000 miles. All 4 glow plugs are useless car won't start in cold weather. 3 are open circuit one is 130 ohms. Wish me luck.
Do you have to remove the intake manifold to change the glow plugs? Or you can work in between? Thx
You have to remove it
Bmw Doctor - wow what a pain. Thank you. My inpa is saying that i have cylinder 6 burnt :(
That’s very nice bro that means the car is nearly finished hopefully you will be switching to petrol and coming to watch my videos more 😁
Bmw Doctor i meant just the glow plug haha..mine only done 77k. I think soon we will kiss good bye petrol and diesel and switch to electric...
Great video! Thanks so much!
Your welcome make sure to subscribe or you will miss the plans for the next Diesel engine on here
Bmw Doctor no problem :) changing glow plugs on my seat Leon 2011 1.6 and this helped a lot :)
Bmw Doctor wd40 is safe to use? It won’t cause a fire etc? I’m very panicky 😂
no mate it wont hurt at all dont worry
Bmw Doctor ok thanks :) 🤞🤞 I get mine out tomorrow, tighten hard enough not crazy then loosen easily then tighten and loosen easy until you can move it freely 👌🔥 :)
I've been waiting anxiously for this video. Thank you Dean for taking time out for showing us how to remove the glow plugs effortlessly.
Your absolutely right garages are scared of doing the glow plugs, but I'm sure they will learn and be more confident after watching this free video. A*
Dean, which glow plugs would you recommend i.e Bosch or Beru?
Bosch mate beru are very very shit now back in them days beru was good to bmw but bmw fucked them over hence why they went to Bosch I wouldn’t trust beru they may sell you ones that will damage your car
@@BMWDoctor Thanx, I also avoid the beru glow plug module and get one from the stealers.
do that indeed mate beru are not good what so ever
@@WaqasKhan-gk4kw stealers one is made by Beru get the hitachi one better made and costs £70 cs 259 at stealers.
@@BMWDoctorI have blowby around my glowplugs and oil inside the wire plugs, how would you fix this? Thank you if you see this🎉
Or if that doesn't work heat engine to 90⁰c will be hot but much better remove glow plugs
WAW SO COOL BRO I LOVE IT BUT I TAKE OFF MY GLOW PLUGS WHNE THE ENGINE IS A LITLLE BIT HOT ANT IT WORK FINE FOR ME
You don’t need engine hot for this mate at all
@@BMWDoctor I KNOW BUT I TRAY THIS MEHOD WHIT MANY ENGINES AND IT WORKS EVERY TIME
My 330D is mapped stage one 270bhp but man it’s sluggish. I’ve literally cleaned the whole intake, egr, swirls off, new fuel filter new spark plugs.
I think it’s time to try this!!!!
Its slugglsh likely because you have had the swirl flaps removed as these are used to assist air intake as a smooth vortex and prevent it from being dumped into the engine so to speak.
buying a bmw and not being able to afford £17.96 glow plugs hahaha
how often do these need replacement? I had all 6 replaced about 50.000 km ago.
they are used CONSTANTLY to help the DPF REGEN so I would change them again and did you change glow plug controller at same time otherwise they wont even work
Use proper penetrating oil instead of wd40
In general, this also works with rust bolts and/or nuts. It breaks the corrosion and since metal has sone stetch under tesion ability creates some, albeit very little space thus allowing a looser component, bolt or nut to turn in the thread patterns.
Not all bolts glow plugs are a total different story now I hope you guys are liking the diesel videos now mate this is all it’s gonna be for the next 6 months at least I got another 2 diesel cars coming you lot wanted it you got it
@@BMWDoctor I'm looking to get a 335d (2010 or 2011) by the end of the year. Hope you start doing diesel vids again.
LeverPhile I am brother for the next 6 months at least
@@BMWDoctor oh, my bad, I thought you were taking a break from diesels ... carry on then, good sir!
LeverPhile no chance mate I post everyday in the only youtuber to do that I won’t be stopping anything
Your fked if it pulls the threds. It's impossible to get them out unless you drill it out.
Owner does not have money to buy them . Why does he own a bmw then?
One is £12 so he doesn’t have £70??
We’re are you based you can’t do mine
