      Great video Claire, I do miss living in the Ouse Valley sometimes.
      And now I know why Gorham Lane that leads from the C7 to Telscombe was named as such

    What a lovely place Telscombe is. I understand that up until 2001, Telscombe manor was used as lodgings by judges when they were sitting at Lewes Crown Court!

      Yes I did say that to Richard but was unsure of the place that they stayed x

      Many years ago my parents ,brother and I were walking from Rottingdean to Southeast along Gorham Lane when a Rolls Royce silently pulled up driven by a judge from the manor, my brother and I internally said 'yes' my dad unfortunately said 'no we are out for a early morning walk'.

    Beautiful, and closed like so many attractive English villages. Worker's cottages inhabited at the weekends on the proceeds of a city bonus, no doubt.

      Sadly the life and soul of many rural villages have gone, you are right.

    Thank you for the walk down memory lane. I lived in Telscombe Cliffs as a child until 1971 when we emigrated to Australia. Every Sunday my parents & my brother and I would walk up Telscombe Cliffs Way and make a left onto Telscombe Road and then along the Downs to Telscombe Village. We were on our way to St Lawrence's church, I still a church brochure with my brother and I standing outside the entrance to the church. We spent many an hour in the graveyard. After church we would all congregate to the village hall and if my childhood memory serves me right I can remember the cup sitting in pride of place on the wall along with a number of photos of the horse, jockey and the owner/trainer. Thank you for sharing this. Some of the comments here about the 'boring countryside' fail to realise that this is the Southern Downs where the top soil is full of chalk. It was incredibly windy and very little could grow in that soil and it was used mostly for sheep in years gone by. One other memory I have was the many times I witnessed the 'Red Arrows" fly over the downs next to Telscombe Cliffs and fly out to the channel and then fly back while practicing their acrobatics displays. Such a wonderful memory to have.

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Susan. I think the lack of growth on the downs is part of its charm.

      @@RichardVobes From what I can see on the map and what I saw on the video there has been no change whatsoever. And yes it would be a great pity to see housing development going up in the area. Glad to hear the earlier plans to develop the area failed. Thanks again Richard, I shared it with my adult children so they could see the village and what I've been telling them over the years.

    Lovely. Thanks Richard and Claire. I often hike and cycle there. Bit of a haven. I think these open pastures would benefit from having more wooded copses. They are very barren. There are trees further on up the hill...but are fenced off and belong to a large house! More woodland would be a great legacy project. Aid to wildlife. It's not true that the wind/salt is a problem, there are plenty of healthy Woodlands in coastal locations. If fewer and fewer. Woodland was removed to create more crop/grazing space, housing, the odd defence project etc. I have had ideas about starting a public/local authority campaign to create awareness. Plant more trees etc. Does anyone think this could grow roots as a project?

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree - more trees is definitely a good thing! We don't have enough.

    my father was choir boy at this church 1927 to 1936, services on Sunday and mid week, he lived with his mother and grandmother in Peacehaven where granny was the District Nurse and Midwife. Dad attended Lewes Grammar School for Boys and in 1937 joined the RAF and attended RAF Cranwell Officer Training. After the war he went to Africa working with my mother as a medic.

      Agreed the cycle route is very good. I cycled Hove to Southease via Telscombe this week. Couple of hours either way approx, including dragging bike and panniers through long grass up the slope you were on at the beginning. Lots of friendly sheep there. Found better path for cycling on the return. Plenty of choices of routes. Lovely area. Thanks for the video.

    In April 2009 Telscombe Town Council commissioned an interesting report on the historic issue and management of Telscombe Tye which gives quite a lot of historical information on the Tye and surrounding areas. I came across it in the Autumn 2020 after wanting to find out more about some of the features of the area having taken a lot of walks on the Tye during lockdown. For instance. about a 100-200 yards south east of the Dew Pond on the eastern side of the unmade up Telscombe Road can be found a surviving example of a Cross Dyke which is listed as a schedule monument by Historic England which has further information on the Cross Dyke itself.

    That was a nice little walk ! Very enjoyable ! Sad to hear that yet another part of our countryside may be built over. When you visit the Peak District you can find dew ponds and burial mounds (tumuluses, not sure of the exact plural of tumuluseses). Is Newhaven still a port ?

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Newhaven is still a port. I am looking forward to the trip to the Peak District.

    There are two barrows on the Tye one as sighted above the end of Bannings Vale and one down near the coast road on the Telscombe Cillfs side. They were burial mounds Iron Age not for navigation or an observatory.
    There is a while snail species that exists only on the Tye that came over with the Romans for their food.
    There are remains of a Saxon burial site off Findon Avenue/Bannings Vale. Flint axe finds in Rodmell Avenue dated 20000 years plus by Lewes Museum.
    Telscombe village had sightings as late as the sixties of large lizards the size of dogs, black in colour and last seen on the Merchant estate. Also large lizards the same size but tortoiseshell colouring seen at the Gorse in Lustrels Vale Saltdean, where the school now is and neighbouring houses plus there was a Iron Age barrow there too. There was a Roman/Briton village a few miles up from Telcombe Tye. Dean is the Saxon word for valley and coombe is the ancient Celtic word for valley.
    Telscombe Tye had some of the first manned flight tests in the early 20th Century.
