  • I am thrilled to be taken on a personal guide tour of the Regency Town House in Brunswick Square in Hove, East Sussex. Paul Couchman, one of the volunteers dedicated to renovating the Georgian terraced house, takes me round on this private excursion of this amazing building.

    I just love old architecture & find it admirable that someone is not only loving restoring it, but doing so as authentically as possible.👍 Oh those moldings were to die for!😍

    Gr8 film. My wife and I have visited this property a couple of times. We attended one of Paul’s talks about period cooking and in particular focusing on seasonal puddings. He explained that mincemeat, used in Christmas mince pies, was made using suet. That fat was apparently taken from the protective sacking surrounding a bulls testicles...delicious! An amazing place to visit, enjoy and learn! 👍

    Where were the stables located?

  • @credenza1
    @credenza1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When reading Dickens the characters often refer to the "area" which I gather is the basement level ground at the entrance to the house. What was the function of this?

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question - must storage, surely. Servants working area, etc

    • @paulcouchman5659
      @paulcouchman5659 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The function of the areas is to provide access to the cellars under the pavements, to store coal and also its a light well to allow light into the housekeeper's room. The area would have been kept clear but the areas at the back of the house are where the dirty outside jobs would have been done. They are far away from the eyes of the rich upstairs whereas the front area could have been easily looked down upon by guests in the dining room or above in the drawing room. I hope that answers your question.

    It's completely routine, and generally wrong, to say that houses like this were all about showing off. Not so. Sure, some people were ostentatious but for very many upper middle class people of the late Georgian to early Victorian era this was just what they expected. Their friends in the other houses in the square would have been in the same class, had the same expectations - and would have deprecated ostentation as declassé. Especially when their living standards were very similar - they'd have laughed.
