    The problem with comparing MJ and Prince to Kdot and Drake is that both MJ and Prince were artist. MJ wasn’t just a singer and dancer he wrote songs layered his own backgrounds, learned to make his voice a true instrument, created captivating magic on top of being a humanitarian on a level of his own….
    Drake is a character Aubrey help create….i don’t see drakes level of art worth being compared to MJ at all…

    • @A4bcreative
      @A4bcreative 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      I agree with this. Comparing Drake to MJ beyond numbers doesn't feel respectful to MJ. No matter how many other similarities in the relation between Drake and Kendrick, MJ was a respected genuine artist. Drake is an artist that warrants little respect in light of the web of lies that exist around said talent.

    • @BrotherMalMusic
      @BrotherMalMusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I get what y’all are saying but the comparison makes perfect sense to the average music listener, bc most people don’t know any of what you just explained. Most music listeners are casuals.
      The metaphor at its base is just saying MJ is the bigger popstar while Prince is a little more dialed into the arts, _from the outside looking in,_ as in, to most people. No matter how small of an artistic gap you think there is between the two, one of them is more well known for being the biggest entertainer and the other one is known for being the more artsy one, and way more calculated with anything to do with art.
      If you’re not even a fan of both Drake and Kendrick’s music, you can’t even really say the comparison doesn’t make sense, because it automatically doesn’t work if you’re biased against Drake as an artist. That’s because there are literally countless examples in Drakes 15+ year catalog that show he can do almost anything Kendrick can, it’s just more spaced out and it’s not his main focus because he has to balance the compromise of being an entertainer first. Dismissing Drake’s entire catalog as if he has shown no signs of high level artistry basically forfeits your opinion on this topic even holding any weight.
      There’s also the fact that Kendrick has literally compared himself to Prince in multiple songs spanning multiple years, and Drake has compared himself to MJ in multiple songs for multiple years. That makes the comparison make even more sense bc it’s not something the fans made up, the actual people being compared are the ones who brought the comparisons up, and it wasn’t even because of this beef originally.
      The comparison only doesn’t make sense if you’re trying too hard to be literal, or if you’re too ignorant of Drake proving he’s an artist. Nobody said “MJ was just a singer and dancer”, the comparison isn’t to bash MJ the way ppl bash Drake. The comparison is to show one is universally known for his numbers and entertainment factor, whether he was an amazing artist or not, and the other is universally known to have way more focus on the artistic side, while pulling lower numbers and being less popular as a whole.

    • @mzhappyfree7688
      @mzhappyfree7688 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@BrotherMalMusic I agree with what you are saying to a degree… MJ became the blue print for every pop star that followed. Yes Drake compared himself to MJ because of numbers and you can’t deny that reality… but does anyone think Drake has captivated the world to that degree. That every rapper after him will imitate his dance moves, style, production, etc etc…
      I agree most people are casual listeners which is to say ignorant meaning uneducated and choose to stay as such…. So superficially the comparison makes sense
      Where you lost me is when you say Drake has shown he can do what kdot can without acknowledging kdot is a Pulitzer Prize winner…. Find me the Drake album that was as culturally, artistically, personally open and impactful to peoples state of mind as PAB heck even Mr Morale/ Big Steppers… you can’t because Drake the character has shown he will always choose a dollar over his art, over his message, over his humanity over anything

    • @BrotherMalMusic
      @BrotherMalMusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mzhappyfree7688 You misquoted me to prove your point so I didn’t lose you. I said Drake has shown he can do _almost_ everything Kendrick can do. That _almost_ was a very intentional word with the purpose of you not being able to play the angle you still played by leaving that word out.
      Kendrick has been my favorite rapper since late middle school and I’m pushing 30 now, so you don’t have to persuade me of anything about his works or artistry. Imo a Pulitzer Prize is not an argument for why he’s better than anyone. Without the award his body of work would be the exact same and that’s what you’re highlighting. Awards are superficial in the grand scheme of things, at least for this topic. It’s also contradicting bc if you wanna talk awards, then we’re talking accolades and you can’t just stop at Pulitzer, or put it on a higher rank of an award than other ones to move the goal post. You would have to talk awards in general, and I’m almost sure Drake has more, so that point falls apart.
      No, Drake doesn’t have an album as conceptual or artistically layered as _TPAB_ or _MMATBS._ Neither do a majority of the _”legends”_ that came before Kendrick, but most hip hop fans would still put most of those artists before Kendrick as better.
      You believing Drake doesn’t have a better album has nothing to do with my point which is that Drake has proven on multiple occasions he can make high level art when he wants. And if we’re going by the argument of who can do what the other can’t, there are plenty of things Drake does that Kendrick wouldn’t have the same success doing if he tried.
      Tbr it seems like you’re biased against Drake so we’ll probably never agree on this part anyway, but I’ve been listening to both of them since the front end of their careers so when people try to discredit / dismiss Drake’s entire artistic value as a whole, it just seems forced. Dude probably has put out more music than Kendrick and J Cole combined, and not all of it is mindless pop hits, there’s plenty of substance if you look or if you were there for it when it dropped. It’s just not all packaged so conceptually and neatly and intentionally as Kendrick, and it’s not as consistent either, but it’s there. Years worth of it.
      I respect your stance though and I get why you would have it. Again, Kendrick has been my favorite rapper for well over a decade so I feel everything you’re saying about him. The narrative that Drake is not on Kendrick’s level is valid, and provable lol. But when you get into dismissing his artistic value in full, I just think it comes off as try-hard and not actually being as familiar with Drake’s catalog as Kendrick’s, but that’s just my opinion.

    Kendrick won this battle off of skill. It don’t matter if he had ever brought up the pedal thing he still would’ve beat Drake because he’s a real rapper he wrapped Drake he didn’t just bring up the pedal thing. He could’ve just brought Drake’s character in as far as being a culture vulture in the music, and he would still want dissected as a rapper. And to be inadequate, it still would’ve come out that Drake don’t write his own raps to use Future and the Atlanta rappers . at the end of the day, the results would have been the same. He was always gonna lose because he was never on Kendrick’s level. Y’all gave him more way more credit than he ever deserved.

    If you pay attention to MTG, you will notice that there are female screams on the back ground as if they were from a horror movie. The part where he says "you lied about...", there are also screams and distirbing shi in the back ground. The whole song was constructed to make you feel unease. Everybody say that they felt exacly that way. So, if we all felt that way, imagine what Drake felt, since it was about him that Kendrick was talking. The song was made to brake Drake spirit and put him on a state where he can't funcioning right mentaly. MTG was a master movement never seen before. People will study this track on college courses about narrative for years to come. How to desconstruct a well stablished charecter.

    I loved how Emanny broke down the Prince vs MJ narrative in liking to the Kendrick vs Drake beef. I grew up in Kyoto Japan & born into a jazz family who played instruments & listened to great musicians. So when i heard Prince as a kid it spoke to me deeply. I've always been more of a Prince & Kdot fan for that exact same reason. I was born in 99 so the MJ VS Prince debate never really grabbed me, even tho i love MJ too, don't get me wrong. Prince just spoke to me more lyrically & musically & Prince was doing what MJ was doing but with his instruments. Not counting Prince was an incredible rapper, egnineer, producer, multi instumentalist, dancer but i'm never upset if someone prefers MJ. Just like i've always had fun debates about Drake vs Kdot but was never upset that someone chose Drake.
    They're totally different artists but absolute geniueses of artists with different approaches to creating art and music. Prince created beautiful instrumental piano music, meditation music, just in the same way as Kdot creating "therapy" music like "Mother i sober". That's the kind of music that speaks to me but these debates will go on forever lol. No different than Taylor Swift vs Beyonce, 2Pac vs Biggie, Nas vs Jay z, Rolling stones vs The Beatles. Etc etc. I can care less how many views or sales an artists has. It will never make the better music. If that's the case Justin Bieber is almost better than everybody lol

      Honestly, it probably has more to do with the fact that they are diametrically opposite to each other. While Drake did have a hand in bringing Kdot to the forefront, Kendrick's presentation has always been the polar opposite of Drake's.
      People compare these two to MJ and Prince because of this common thread. Drake and MJ represent a polished pop-friendly sound that's easily digested by the masses (and subsequently makes them wildly popular). Kendrick and Prince represent a deep and nuanced sound that requires a listener to slowly savor each bit of music presented. Their level of popularity is not as high, nor do they strive to achieve those levels on purpose.
      This isn't to say that one viewpoint is wrong or right. Far from it. But it is important that people understand that one viewpoint cannot and should not overtake the other. They need to remain in balance. Prince and Michael Jackson coexisted peacefully because they understood that balance. Kendrick and Drake are establishing their balance now. They will never like each other on a personal or professional level. But they will build and maintain this generation's balance between light surface-level music and deep, thought-provoking music.

    Drake represents EVERYTHING wrong with hip hop today. Where ‘faking it til you made it’ is the fastest way to the top. And having standards, morality, and artistry is laughed at. Look at the type of “artist” Drake puts on.

    I completely disagree with the guy in all white- commenting on how Kendrick’s track “hit like medium” in my opinion. I’ve heard drakes music my whole life, and only connected to the popularity of it in a sense. Though, on the other hand; Drake’s music never spoke to me on a deeper level, hence why I was never a true fan of his music. I could vibe to the sort of “catchy-ness” aspects of them, but never truly snap my fingers to. This is all during times I wasn’t even aware of Kendrick’s music, nor was I even introduced to his music, name, and artistry as a rapper/musician. It was until I heard his diss tracks that opened up an entire Pandora’s box for me. Kendrick’s side of the diss battle was enough for me to be like “Damn, this guy is poetically powerful.” His style is so unique in a way that instantly grabbed my attention. Versus Drakes music, to where it took me a couple of “listens” and cultural influences around me to be like “alright, it’s catchy and people make it lit. I can vibe to it no problem.” Basically my point is, I completely disagree that Kendrick’s craft is “medium” I believe it is powerful and real on a deep level. I mean c’mon the subliminal messages both verbally-to be imagined/pictured- AND visually. You can’t tell me that’s “medium” 😭❣️
