- Hi guys, in this video we will see how to make a Y splitter cable that divides the 5V power supply of, for example, an external Hard Disk and the data.

Have you ever installed a heavy game on an external hard drive?
If yes, you know that when the game requires too much data from the hard disk, it disconnects.
The Hard Disk disconnects because the current required for all that data is too much compared to what the motherboard can supply and therefore, for a fraction of a second, the Hard Disk disconnects.
Thanks to the cable that we will make in this video, this will no longer happen because the current required by the Hard Disk will come from another USB socket that we can connect to a wall adapter or any external power supply.

fantastic. Only, don't we need to add a diode to protect the pc/laptop usb port? I'm asking only, I'm a beginner.
You can use a diode to protect the usb ports and so the pc and the power supply but i made this thing because i want to make the hard disk use more current and adding a diode i lower the voltage of 0,7V and so i will not have 5V on the Hard disk and other problems appears

Can I just plug the two usb end into two usb slots? I’m just trying this for a Nintendo Wii

Wouldn't it be the best if you separated the Red Cable (5v).
What I meant is by fully removing it from the main USB cable. Then attaching the 5V output (micro USB) straight into the external cable.
Would this setup be better? I don't think my USB Port on my PC will like being fed 5V from the power adaptor
no because i don't want the external power supply every time i connect my hard disk. I want it only when it has to carry out heavy tasks
@@mauri_scio sorry I forgot to add the important part, is it fine for the USB port of the PC to be also powered. Since the external power cable is attached wouldn't it also send power to the PC?

Luckily internal part on USB ports in your computer have some safety built in, otherwise it could end up bad. I hope u don't use cheap charger cuz it's still a change that voltage spike is too high and u're slowly damagining your board.

Yes. You can plug one USB in the front and one in the back. BUT if the USB maximum current output of the WiiU is reached, you must plug the power USB cable into an external phone charger

@@tupapa503 I just "upgraded" the USB 3 cable of my external harddisk 2TB WD Elements. It works perfectly when plugging in both USB cables into the ports on the backside
We can also use an external powered usb hub for same purpose. But this option is expensive.
Can I use that hub to power an external hard drive that will be connected to a DVR?
If I plug a USB cable from a DVR to a powered hub & connect another USB cable from the HD to the same powered hub, will the DVR still transfer data to the hard drive?
Right
The important thing is that a usb cable should always carry GND and +5V and the + and - of the data. It doesn't matter how

the cheap hubs i used to buy have an outlet for usb c power source for this very purpose
that being said, i'm more running into problems connecting more than 1 drive per port.. i've managed 3 (2 nvme 1 hdd) but it's not plug and play, have to really work on it - 1 drive is fine and nvme doesn't need power but there are definitely conflicts, have yet to find a hub without
but I find interesting to benefit from the power of the usb port of the computer AND from the charger. Because sometimes with a laptop there is no option to plug a charger on the wall, and the original 5v from the laptop may be enough. (If I'm in a forest!)

if the answer is yes (but it is not), you should put the diode on the positive cable in the direction that goes from the usb of the pc to the hard disk and from the usb of the power supply to the hard disk. In this way, imagine the diode as an arrow, there are who arrows on the red wire that go towards the hard disk
