Great technique, excellent attention to craft! Not everyone agrees on whether varnish is always a necessary step, but we think it's a great way to make paintings easier to care for and keep free of dust (something collectors will appreciate). Varnish also restores the wet appearance of colors, bringing the image closer to what the artist created originally, and unifies surface sheen, evening out shiny and dull spots. Matte varnish is a good choice for paintings that will hang in locations that are challenging to light without glare (bright lights, low ceilings, near windows). Matte can generally be applied over gloss, but not the reverse. A single coat of synthetic resin, solution varnish is usually all that's needed, but if a second coat is desired, or if there's a run or flaw in the 1st coat, a second coat usually re-wets the first and results in a nice, even finish.
