Lyrics:
There is no political solution
To our troubled evolution
Have no faith in constitution
There is no bloody revolution
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Our so-called leaders speak
With words they try to jail you
They subjugate the meek
But it's the rhetoric of failure
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world
Where does the answer lie?
Living from day to day
If it's something we can't buy
There must be another way
We are spirits in the material world
Are spirits in the material world

Bassline and drums are absolutely heavenly in this.
That fade out when Copeland goes to the ride cymbal is nasty. I miss those killer album fades. That’s how it was done.
Always wait for that bit!
That's right! Leaves you wanting more! Cant stand todays music that just stops dead like a derailed train.
Bring back the fade out!
Only the 80s....
Stops dead what your comment disappears. Anyway the Police were the shit in the early-mid 80s
He recently said it was one of the most difficult songs to drum to on Rick beato2
Everyone talks about the bassline but it’s the drums that makes this song
Yep ..But both completes the vibe 👍🎶
Como todas las de Police

Steward Copeland said: this song is the hardest one to perform
At that time I was 13 and my dad 48. He made me listen this amazing song of the Police for the first time, he loved the reggeae style, the energy that comes with this tune. He often listened this song until was alive and he considered it one of the best song. After 16 years of his passing I have tears listening it and thinking of him
Nice. Your parent made you listen to this record. I had to hide this record from my parent. Such different words.
Thanks for sharing this May you Dad RIP 🙏
Lovely story
The crack of that snare is so crisp!!! Hard to imagine the 80's without these guys!!! Unreal talent!!!

More of The Police and WWE, WCW Legend Sting !
Stewart Copeland has the most recognizable drumming style of anyone in history. You IMMEDIATELY know it's him from the first bar...that's true greatness.
So true he is Police!
RIngo.
Even better in blow when you're hurting from a loss of losing a friend that listened to them with you
Every time he hits those octobans you know it's him!
His tone and playing are a dead give away. I think the only player that is as recognizable would be Bonham. But that snare of Copeland's is unmistakable.
My God what a powerhouse trio
FOR REAL!!❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂
Just watched a clip where Stewart said that this was, BY FAR, their hardest tune to play, rhythmically, for all three of them. Very interesting, I wouldn't have thought that.
It takes a huge amount of talent and effort to make it appear so effortless.
This song is more relevant now than ever...genius
Their entire catalog!!!
The timing of the bassline with the bass drum is sublime
Before taking the oath for the presidency, this song should be played for incumbent presidents all over the world.
Syncopated.
Sting created some of the most iconic bass lines.
👊👊👊🙌
It's actually the police
As a musician I can say that this song has a very complex Rhythm to it super difficult to duplicate
It's not exactly complex. It's just that the syncopation is so relentless that it's very easy to get the wrong idea about where the measures begin and end.
@@fdsfsdfsd1552Copeland literally said it’s their most complex rhythm track, hands down.
@@chasemartin5373 - I'm not saying it's not difficult to keep up with. Here's the Copeland quote I could find on the matter: "[I]t is very sparse but, in fact, is *a rhythmic nightmare* for all three of us. ... *It is very simple* but it’s on the upside down of the back of nowhere.”
Stewart Copeland himself has said the drum beats on this song are extremely difficult
@@jameskipp1657 - And I never denied that. I'm just talking about the complexity or simplicity of it.
Andy Summers is one underrated guitarist
True but one of the most respected among musicians
@@josephgus5638 Oh absolutely! Had the chance to see him front row on his most recent tour and he was insane good his solo work is amazing as well!
Totally great
Everybody in this band was underrated- due to the huge amount of talent coming out at that time, and MTV was on fire 🔥
I don't have enough words to say how much this song means to me.
+Lere Trein (lere8) Same here :)
I agree. My fav police song. It’s so addicting
The sad thing is that I remember when this was released and it feels like only yesterday. Beautiful song but the audio on this doesn't do the song justice compared to the actual version on Ghost in the Machine.
Lere Trein I first heard this song in Seattle, 1982-83! Great times!
Bugger off.
One of the most innovative bands in rock history.
Absolutely.
innovative? But if reggae comes from the late 60's, and that's where most of its inspiration comes from. Be careful, it's a great song, but let's not detract from the roots.
True 💯... The Police of the late 1970s 1980s brought a lot of new sounds, lyrics, images to Top 40, pop music. Not punk, not disco or dance but a new way of music.

This is where The Police took the bass line for Synocity in 1983 !
This is their best song, hands down. The drumming and the bass are almost addictive. The Police were so talented ever since they formed in London in 1977. Real instruments and real singing, and great musicians, like Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Gordon Sumner.
I'm 54 and grew up with The Police..Great band x
Agree to disagree. Bring on the Night gets my vote.
This song was the one that Stuart said was the hardest to play, “What’s really hard is ‘Spirits in the Material World’. That’s hard”. There is a slightly Middle Eastern influence at play in his unique fill, with Copeland layering in the ‘pat your head, rub your tummy’ difficulty of occasionally omitting the bass drum on the downbeat to create a strange sense of jarring syncopation. As it happens, it’s hard to even place the downbeat, creating a rhythm section that you can get lost in.
Agreed. A band that had four genres in their sound. Pop, rock, new wave, and reggae. Nobody like them...
Not as good as the stranglers or the jam
Our So call Leaders speak !!
The lyrics of the song are so relevant now its incredible and it was written 30 years ago.
Most people comment on the instruments and the players, but like you, I find the lyrics to be the most amazing part of this song.

True words, you are so right!

Bring on the night is so good too..
It's bizarre that their most popular song is about a stalker.
There is a Club of a few musicians gifted by God with a talent that can't be learned. and Sting is in that club.
Sting has ADD. These-people can be gifted I have read.
One of the hardest songs to drum. Such a complex beat! Amazing.

Agreed 100 percent
Lol
As a bass player I could listen to that bass line on loop all day such a killer sound
Oh God Yes .

Copeland is a monster on this. That extra tight Tama snare crack and the odd little 'ting' just makes it perfect. Together they were sooo good at that point.
Ohmygosh, riight?? That lil ting ..
Why is no one talking about the biggest charm of this great song: the harmony and strange charm that comes from the off-beats of drums, bass, and keyboards? That harmony is SO SO addictive! A true masterpiece.
I don't know about anyone else, but I love Stewart Copeland's drumming style.

“Voices Inside My Head” was played on Black radio stations when it was released so I would throw some Funk/R&B in this equation too! “Voices” is also widely popular from the sample used in the R&B group 702’s hit “Steelo”
Nah, that's The Clash. They're both great BTW.
A huge Police fan since the 1980's here. How I wish they would get back together and did one more world tour, allthough Andy will blow out his 82nd candle this year.
Thank God that this trio joined up during the mid 1970's, developed their own music style and made some of the best songs ever, one of which being Spirits in the material World. Stewart at his very best in this song i.m.o.!
Their music is just timeless.
... you speak it out (write it out) ... I would not wanted anything more than seeing them together again ...
Since the 80's, how about in late 70's as well in 1978/79 as well?

These guys are among the greatest. What I admire the most is how Andy Somers is a guitar virtuoso but you would never know it until he solos. He plays only what is necessary for the song of The Police. Knucklehead guitarists don't do that. They want to appear like a guitar hero regardless of what is needed out of them for the song. Andy Somers is wiser and smarter than that!
This song still sets a certain mood and vibe 40 plus years later,,,❤
The drums on this song are very different than most rock songs, and shockingly simple. Love the way Copeland stays off the snare and uses the bass and high hat to establish the syncopated rhythm and give room in the song, but then periodically goes back to the snare for emphasis. Then the move back to a more typical rock drumming at the end of the song? Just brilliant.
