- ■ SAIGON, VIETNAM: I flew to Vietnam with nothing more than the clothes I was wearing and a change of t-shirt and underwear. Top of my agenda was thus to scour through Saigon's famous 'fake' clothes market (Ben Thanh) for a 2nd, 3rd and 4th outfit. From Nike shoes, Tommy Hilfiger t-shirts and Calvin Klein underwear this market has it all.
So what do the products cost? What is the starting price? And what can for example a t-shirt be haggled down to? This and much more in episode one of my mega Vietnam fake market hunt.

Then it seems you could yell out the price you're offered, and someone else will offer a lower price. Then shout out THAT price, and so on.
i think it is because numbers are more easily communicated that way. universal language

I was in that Market in Saigon a couple years ago. A little market lady in a green cocktail dress grabbed my hand and rubbed my arm like I was her boyfriend, loaded me up with T- shirts and shorts. Then my Vietnamese wife came along to argue prices with her. I couldn't understand them, but the body language and shouting was comedy gold.

$1 at Dollar Tree for those flip flops. Slightly better quality $3 at Walmart.
It all makes sense when you look at a western economy like America. Americans are buying all kinds of shit locally that actually came from China, which they could have bought straight from China themselves for much cheaper like the people who sold it to them did. I do this sometimes and it's called ebay. In effect the huge local markups are there because Americans are willing to pay so much more to avoid having to wait. You could pay $1 and have to wait a couple weeks or you could walk right into the local store and get it for $10. Or you could buy a shit ton of it and wait, then resell it locally for 10x to people who didn't want to invest in that wait time. Then you have places like dollar stores who decided they would stock up on the mother load and only sell things they could acquire for pennies. That whole premise no longer existing would obliterate the economy. That means certain 'production' countries simply can't be allowed to raise their standards of living and certain 'consumer' countries can't be allowed to, for example, stop buying tons of shit every holiday. When the beneficiary of a western economy happens to grace the actual production lands you're damn right the merchants are going to throw in that tax.

Not always cheap from the manufacturer.... all depends on the quantity the shop stocks in. Also, rent and labour cost on top...

Yeah he khew he was buying expensive. In Denmark on sale if you just need a thin no name t shirt you can sometimes buy them a local supermarked for 10 kr which is about 1,5$. I still have not found a place in Thailand that can sell me a t-shirt for that price. Will continue the hunt today. Has to be possible to find a No name t shirt for 55 baht. :)

This is Ben Thanh market, it is traditional market for tourist tour. Salewoman has to rent with high cost for business. And he had no experience to buy at there, need to bargain for any goods.

Most clothes and suits that we find in the department stores in the USA are either made in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, ... All of them except those made in China are pretty good, and you don't want to know how much we have to pay for those same items that you bought in Vietnam. In other words, we get ripped off by our department stores in the states.
Compare these items to the ones in the fake market in New York, they are definitely better qualities and prices.
