Why I shoot Leica

- Today I go through the advantages of shooting Leica cameras. I have used the Leica Q-P, Leica M6 and Leica M9 and here are my feelings towards them. I walk through Tokyo, Japan and take some photos along the way.

As expected, it's a Leica vid so there's a bunch of stupid comments. Will be deleting the ones that aren't actual feedback. Cheers.
Nice ways of presenting your points, good humor :D I get the hype now and all your points make sense to me. I would add simplicity. Lots of cameras are made like swiss army knifes. And you never use more than 20% of what the camera can do. It's a nice feeling when a tool works the way you want it to work.
agreed Sam! keeping things simple is precious nowadays with all the crazy functions.
“This is not a flex” 😂 holding two Leica’s like Rambo 😂
Narrator: "It was indeed a flex"
hi! thanx for sharing. how di you wrap the strap around your hand? I always seem the have all loops in front of the lens etc.
Went from my a7iii to the Q2 and enjoy the process. Awesome feeling and you get “rewarded” with insane sharpness for the body size :)
I did the same! Hopefully you resisted getting pulled in deeper…unlike me. 😊
You need more subs man. I've been watching your channel for a while and love the new vlog. I own a Leica Q-P because of you. Sold all my Sony gear and switched to it. Best choice I've ever made. I'm curious on your post processing process lol and if you tend to shoot jpg or always dng and edit photos
wow thanks!!! and yeah hopefully I get more subs 🧐🧐🧐
I shoot dng
definitely dng. that's where the magic begins. but some said jpg is good too. I find the jpg soso. but love the colours on the Q2.
You've got my dream combo: Q2 and a M(240) with a 50/1.4. I'm still dreaming of the Q2. Take care and enjoy photography.
It’s a Q and M6
I have a beautiful graphite xpro2 that malfunctions a bit and I have yet to hear about issues with the q. Im not sure about fixed 28mm but I am interested in trying it out. I wish there was a leica store near me.
Great video, love it!
Humbled you were inspired by my video 😭👌🏽
you are THE original Q video guy on TH-cam. thanks for dropping by :)
Love your content man! The vibe is always so chill!
4:30 and I still don't know why you shoot Leica
After shooting Pentax, Canon,Sony I decided to sell all of my Sony gear and just get the Leica Q-P... I got tired of carrying around alot of big heavy lenses ..it had become such annoyance over the years especially after having back pains and shoulder pain(dislocated my shoulder a couple years ago) and so far I'm loving it...best decision I've made.... only thing I want now is an M10-P and I'm set for very ,very long time.. hopefully some day 🤞
Nice video dude! Which lens were you using for the M6 sample photos? Love the look of those.
Great video as usual. Thanks Ulysses and greetings from Germany
If I wanted a Leica digital with the legendary colors and one lens, what would you pick. Budget is $3000-$4000 .... ?
Try the Leica Q2. Even the first version is good.
If you want a M system that would be difficult, but you can find an used M10 for 4,000 (if you are lucky) , Leica lens are too expensive , I will recommend a Voigtlander lens instead
If you want a Leica Q that’s a great choice , the lens is great, that’s under your budget.
But if you want a Leica true experience you need to get a ragefinder.
Don’t care as long as it inspires you. The m4/3 system inspires my creativity. The Leica always reminded me of a over priced Rolex it didn’t tell time any better than Seiko but it looked nice and and the owner appreciated that name brand.
No kidding. "Lots of videos about price, I will look at the practical merits." "Which would you rather have with you on the table?". It's pretty darn easy to zone focus any lens with a distance scale. You can slow down with any camera. Just about every modern camera has access to easy manual exposure control. Leica's EVFs are inferior to what's on offer by Nikon and Panasonic. Many manufacturers (Pentax, Olympus, Fuji, etc.) still offer fully metal lenses with distance scales and aperture rings (in Pentax's case, aluminum). The top tier Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax bodies are more robust than the Leicas. I get it. I have a Pentax MX and Leica M2. It would've been a better video if he said "I shoot Leica, because I like it". Then again, that wouldn't have generated clicks, so I guess mission accomplished.
@@ryankwan1934 - but can you doubt that's really Aoki's take on it, anymore than a craftsman might prefer the feel of a certain chisel in his hand? His friend Samuel L Streetlife loves Ricoh GR for it's fit into his 'kinetic' style, etc. For me recently I had a look through a new FF Panasonic's EVF, and I think I saw the future, it was peerless.
@@zenden6564 I am a bit confused. That was the thrust of my entire response. His video was ostensibly "I'm going to give you practical reasons why I shoot Leica" when really it came down to "I shoot it because I like how it feels to me". There's nothing wrong with that at all; rather, I think the title of the video is misleading.
@@ryankwan1934 👍
Thanks for the great video! Can you tell me the name and where to find the brown adjustable leather strap you used on the Leica M?
Cheers Daniel
Ok. I know I will get a bunch of people hating with this, but fuck it.
I'm not saying that Leica isn't of great quality or anything like that.
Leica has become the Rolex of the camera world. There are two types of people who buy it.
1. The enthusiast. This person like the story, the feeling, and the mystique of owning a Leica (or Rolex)
2. The show of. This person likes the gear that other people get envious about. They like to have something not a lot of people have. It makes them feel important. This person also tends to think that by having this exclusive thing, that he can make others think more highly of him like he is more experienced.
I think its fine people buy this. But just like Rolex, you pay a ton for the ability to say "I own this". It's fine.
It just feels like all these reasons you give are actually you justifying to yourself that you spend that kind of money, for something that can be done for a hell of a lot cheaper.
Leica is on the fast-track to becoming douchebag gear just like Rolex. I meet tons of Rolex owners and a tom of Leica owners, and the thing 90% of them have income is, the length they are willing to go to make other people think that they are more than they are.
That's why I sold my Rolex. I could not wear it, because every time I had it on, I was afraid to be bunched together with the "look at me" types.
Again. I'm not saying Leica isn't great. I'm not saying there aren't enthusiasts. I'm just saying. More often people get these things for all the wrong reasons.
I shoot a Leica rangefinder when I need a quiet camera. I need a quiet camera when I am shooting weddings, classical music concerts, sound recording studios, golf tournaments, and funerals.
Other quiet rangefinders I have used include the Contax G1, the Canonet QL17, and the Fuji 6x7. Compared to an SLR, all three rangefinders are quiet but just not as quiet as my Leica M6 rangefinder.
The only camera I have used that is totally silent is the Fuji X-Pro2 digital mirrorless in silent mode.
I'd love to try one someday.
Loved the casual vlog style!
Oh god i love how autofocus worked on that 6:50-7:10 scene
it's that lonesome youtuber persistence... lol
(I actually really liked that scene too!)
Hey good info. I shoot with Fuji at the moment but looking into Leica Q-P or Q2. Have you tried both? If yes, would love to here your feelings about both. Thank you for your time.
when i first started photography i tried to shoot as "advertised" for begginers, on shutter or aperture priority, full auto etc... but once i started shooting all manual, and even manual focusing and using zone focus in some cases it just sped up my shooting like crazy. I hate to fight with my camera when it decide to overexpose everything, and i have to fight with the autofocus in some cases. So yeah i totally understand your point about the full manual being actually even faster.
I feel shooting on full manual is subjective. Todays modern mirrorless have good autofocus. Shooting street photography for me is better when on aperture or shutter priority... And if you're doing portraits it should do fine as well, because there isnt much of a rush to capture the moment compared to the spontaneous nature of street.
@@InertiaEffect oh yeah whatever works is fine, i wasn't trying to belittle anyone using program modes or anything, just my experience was everyone told me to use this automated mode or this one etc, but in the end i found that in my case working full manual was faster and less of a struggle for all types of photography i do.
What do you think of a Q vs an M? Let’s say the M had a fixed 28mm and the same sensor as the Q... what would you prefer?
if it's only 28mm, I'd use the Q. I still want to use the 35mm and 50mm, so in that case I'm looking into the M...
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto oof, hope you’re good at saving up :) also guess if you want 28 you’ll got for the Q means you’re ok with no rangefinder style viewfinder and the focusing is similar between the two? (I’ve heard some people say the Q is still fly by wire or something?)
@Manoj Prabhu thank you for such a detailed reply! I did wonder what people mean when they talk about manual focus, I thought it was basically fully manual lenses and AF lenses, so how the Q works in manual confused me! On a seperate note, I’ve just ordered a 23” f1.4 with Fuji - looking at the lens, I think it might have a similar MF mechanism to the Q? No problem if you have no experience with this
What filter do you use? The sunny scenes look so good
for the camera or video?
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto for video
I have a Zorki 4k Russian 35mm rangefinder with a really sharp 50mm F2 Jupiter lens. It looks a bit like a Leica M2. £50.
My friend has a black Fujifilm X10 digital camera
Looks just like a Leica. A long zoom lens which is very sharp. Bought recently secondhand. It has Fuji film settings like Velvia.
£200.
8:27 - 8:43 learned something there. The intro, wild and free. Awesome content as always 🤙🏾
would like to ask a question about range finders being faster at 3:00 part, isnt that just zone focusing instead of range finder? seeing people walk in to frame ahead of time.
sorry I didn't explain too much in depth in this vid Jay. for the rangefinder, yes it's the zone focusing and the optical finder. then it's also a combination of the dials in place and the tactile lenses.
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto oh no worries just a got a little confused, thank you for the clarification :)
Are Sony G Master lens better than Leica?
The final idea is less of function is more, for leaving us creating out of the multifunction. Like with my Xpro2, I often feel the same that I am beside my creativity because I can't really take photos fully as I want. Interesting point of view with your Leica 👌🏻
Because of u and other youtubers, i bought leica lense for my panasonic.
True it is that pricey (2nd hand lens 😭) but that image quality, that separation, gradation, etc etc and what i'll get when i take the scene really2 worth for the money i spent.
Oh my god, the shot at @2:49! Was this shot in New York?? I’m almost positive that’s Grace Coddington!
Once you go Leica there no is going back! Great video Ulysses!
I feel you bro, I’m about to deep the toe always wanted one it’s time, it must feel like playing all sorts of guitars for many years until you get to play PRS and suddenly other guitars no longer exist.
Hahah nice video and perfect timing! I’ll save my comments for later. ;)
Japan is such a happening place and so photogenic, can’t wait til this COVID-19 pandemic settles down and travel opens up again...Japan is on the top of my return trips...the Q is great because of its automation features...autofocus is quick...and always brings out the Leica quality product...it took me 45 years of photography to finally afford and appreciate what Leica can offer to my photography...
humble flex ! Lol the color grading in these photos are legit
What do you think about M10 Monochrome and rumored Q2 Monochrome? Is there a real benefit shooting Monochrome sensor? I always wanted a Leica to be completely away from my Canikon system.
I've never tried one, I'd love to though!
I hear that there's more grey tones in the monochrome sensors. If that's true, that'll be quite amazing.
my M10-P *white* limited edition feels great in hands, and would buy a Fuji only if they make a GFX-50M monochrome.
thanks, regards
Damn when you said the xpro3 felt cheap 😂 feels fine to me but maybe I’ll have to try a leica at some point
relatively would have been a better word choice
not a personal attack! 🤣
but sorry I didn't mean to attack any brands here. I hope my point was put across by saying "it"s hard to go BACK to other brands after using a Leica"
Fuji need to double down on the Xpro3 and shift to a true M competitor. Take out video, shrink the body a bit, nicer materials. Make it a true photographer’s camera.
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto no just made me laugh, the xpro3 feels really good to me being titanium and all, reminds me a lot of my contax g1. Feel like I'm slowly going towards leica, the fuji x100s really set me towards rangefinder style cameras and I guess I'm just progressing along that.
@@bakaroo23 don't you consider titanium plating to be quite nice material?
sorry, i know its not the subject but i just love your pants. Where is it from?
thanks Paulo! these are from FACTOTUM. (japanese brand!
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto thank you! Love your work too :)
Not a flex... bro lol. Like every time, awesome video and you make me really want to go out and buy Leica right now! Leica is no doubt being the most beautiful camera.
Bye. Enjoy the video. It's hard to take a video and a picture alone on the set. People around me seem to be paying attention to me, and the quality of the pictures is getting worse. So I use a small, light GoPro Black 9. In the past, I went to Sony A7M3 + 16-35 + 24GM combination because I wanted to, and I liked small and light ones. You're good. Good! I enjoyed the video!
kinda thinking about the M262 after the few time with my M6 to move from my ancient nikon D3 😂😂
If you like the M6, you'll also like the M262. I use both and I'm happy ;-)
At 05:11" sort of an unfair comparison, no? Attach a huge mic and a tripod to the leica q it won't be much different
that was kind of joke. maybe it wasn't obvious 🤣
I bought Leica just so i can avoid GAS. Since other brand like to release upgrade a model every year lol
The pics shown in the video are unedited?
I fully agree !!!
i love the fujifilm camera bodies and controls but i feel like photographers are hesitant to talk about their image quality.
the colors aren't very accurate. greens are neon and such
Confidence means a lot. I like my X100F but the auto and manual focus does not make me confident. On the other hand, I have no such concerns with my Nikon DSLR. Considering the Q2.
Interesting what you say about the Fuji colors. I liked the ones on the early X100 and XE2, but on the later models, the colors are all cartoony and fake.
I got my M240 for 8 months and still learning how to use it. Be honest it is not user friendly like other af cameras. But it is a great fun from it.
I'm still working until I can afford an M10. It must be nice...
would love an M10 too...
Gaijin gang checking in
You can still take amazing pictures on a lumix gx80, no leica needed.
It must be nice :D
Maybe one day... So far happy with Fuji X100F :-)
't was nice ;)
I love my leicas, i'm a big fan of rangefinders so why not have the best
the defining moment that all hipster channels leads to
Nice if you can afford leica ! Fortunate young man
Sometimes my leica gets jealous when i bring my hasselblad out for date nights 😂🤣 Oh those big lovely timage qualities 😚🤗 so smooth
I hate it when people want a photographer to justify why they use a certain brand. Do you think there will ever be a photographer who refuses to even let anyone know what brand they use? ie let their images be the actual focus ( no pun intended ). I guess that will be a long time coming though , probably about the same time vloggers start using manual focus rather than complain about autofocus in every video ( yes you Casey! ). :-)
It’s not a flex... it’s a rangefinder
I am realizing what you mention about X-Pro3 since I start to shoot also with Leica M10-P.
The Leica's camera is solid, smart and fun to use.
glad to know!!!
It must be nice. :) If someone have the money for this, i completely understand why they shoot Leica, it simply the top of the ladder... but lets admit it.. the majority of people just can't afford such expensive camera or it would not be reasonable to spend such money on it when you have family etc. So it is not much about the "choice", for most people these cameras are just out of the question simply because of how much they cost. So i don't know, such video seems pointless to me, because i don't see a reason to NOT buy Leica IF you have the money for it.. of course it feels more solid then X-Pro2, everyone knows that and everyone would expect that :) But hey, otherwise i love all your videos and spontaneous style :) Looking forward to the next one!
agree!
"Brevity is the Soul of Wit" William Shakespeare.
Ulysses wo daisuki desu
I think the fact the the most annoying and uncomfortable thing to talk about these cameras is the price says a lot of good things about the all the other aspects of the cameras
very good point 😂
I have a couple of Leica digitals and I absolutely love them! I want an M6 and I dont even care for film!😆👍📸 That M6 is just plain sexy...Thanks for the chat.
It must be nice.
it must...
Because i can afford it :)
Why I DON'T shoot Leica: I'm not rich 😂
You dont need to be rich. Just go for second hand. This is how I got my M10, and I am so happy with it now! :D
@@JulioFeoUNAM Even second for an M10 body only is AUD $6900 which is roughly 3 X-Pro3 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@bulkan.evcimen I know. But why not go for a M9, or what about film? M3s are so cheap now days. Its more about tasting the experience :p
@Gap well, the topic here is if I someone wants to get into leica without spending the full price. if you are happy with other brands and you send less money, fine. Your money, your decisions.
you look like Steve from stranger things
Get on with it and stop dithering
"leicas are really versatile"
Also
"I don't like other cameras because they're not leicas, basically"
Ok boomer
you definitely didn't listen to what I said. and I use a bunch of other cameras too.
You do realize boomers created the world you live in now with all the creature comforts you enjoy. So it’s not the insult the millennials thinks it is but very much the opposite. And no I’m not a boomer.
@@WhoIsSerafin yeah the world would be such a worse place without them. How could I forget that?
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto I listened very closely actually. And you did not make any other point besides “I like Leica above other cameras” to seem valid. Not there’s anything wrong with that... But from all the things you listed, besides build quality and feel (maybe) may be applied to other brands or models... saying a Leica is versatile is like saying a Aston Martin is versatile because they have four wheels
