- It's been 2+ years since I got the Leica Q-P for photography, and it's been the best, perfect camera I've had. We go through the goods and some bads in this video.

For me, the Q is my primary camera, simply because the camera reflects how I see things as a visual artist. I’m not a photographer, but sure does help me with my pictures, both film and photography. Great follow up review on the Q.
Having both the Q-P and the Q2 i can honestly say they are both fantastic. The Q2 has some strong points which actually make the system even easier to work with. Plus the EVF is a huge upgrade. I do still enjoy my Q-P and won't be selling it. Its a very special camera. You hit all the really important points. Nice Video!!
Great video Ulysses! The Q is amazing, just a perfect combination of design, excellent lens and simple, intituive use. I love my Q 2 (had the Q first) and take it with me pretty much everywhere!

Great series. I own a Q-P as well. Funny you've mentioned the last (-)ve point, the freeze issue when switching from MF to AF. It happened to me so many times in the 1st year, and unlike you I couldn't point to a root cause, to me it was random. I then convinced Leica Australia to send my camera to Germany and service it in the middle of Covid (2020). To be honest Leica Australia responded really well. Eventually they changed the motherboard and sent it back. The freeze happened just once since then. But after watching your video, I realised, at the time I had started to use AF more, so what you said makes perfect sense. The freeze didn't happen any more, because I switched to AF pretty much permanently in the past 2 years. So my Q-P made a round-trip with no reason, but at least the mystery is solved. Thank you! Btw during my Q-P's absence Leica kindly loaned me a Q2. You're right Power switch is not flimsy on Q2, and I think they resolved the freeze issue, it never happened on Q2. So the freeze must have been due to a hardware issue on Q-P that couldn't be fixed, as both Q2 and Q-P to my knowledge use the same firmware version.

I've found the combination of a Leica Q2 and a Fujifilm X-E3 with a 56mm f/1.2 lens (85mm equivalent) is a perfect walk-around setup for me. Both are small and relatively light. I have the Q2 for most shots, but the closer focal length with a wide aperture if I want to take some portraits or more cropped in shots.

I think that like many Fuji users, I'm also very interested in the very special aura of the Leica brand. I wanted to hear from you since you use the Q range from Leica and XE from Fuji. I'm thinking about switching from the XE-4 which I like a lot to the Leica Q (which is perhaps a little more affordable for me). In terms of image quality, color science and user experience... I mainly use the 27mm 2.8 pancake on my Fuji so switching to a fixed lens doesn't seem to be a problem for me.

I'm not the biggest gear head but Leica cameras have always been something I have wanted.
I've been using a Fujix 100f as a cheaper alternative and I would recommend this to anyone who can't fork out the cash for Leicas!
Hey Ulysses! I'm looking for a compact camera to start doing photography everyday like I used to back in Japan, the 5D MKIV is definitely too bulky and I don't want to carry it around everywhere anymore. I ended up finding this video and it's very informative! I'll check my local second hand camera store to see if they have any Leica cameras for sale. Cheers man!

Love the Q. I got mine used this year and sold some gear to get it. Worth every penny. Also, my first Leica which also is special. I agree about the on off switch it drives me nuts. I accidentally switch it to continuous and I always want single all the time
Wonderful candid review. Having switched my setup from the XPro series for digital and Leica M3 for street, to a Sony setup for landscapes and M3 for street, I’m in search of a smaller street digital setup. This is intriguing as it’s the Leica setup w/o the sticker shock of the M-11 or M-10. Thanks!

Your comments at 11:45 onwards really resonated with me, I rarely hear people sharing this perspective but I completely agree with you - I much prefer the grittier/noisier/rough style of imagery, and having recently picked up a Canon R5 as my main work camera, I've found it's actually becoming more difficult to "beat up" the files in post (so to speak) to achieve that kind of aesthetic, as the resolution/quality/sharpness is continually improving in modern camera tech. I think you might've helped sell me the original Leica Q with these comments, that, and the examples of your work are really great, I love your style!

At 7:50, you absolutely can see previews of raws on your computer. All you have to do is install a "plugin"(?) from the microsoft store to preview raws.
I haven’t had an issue with my Q-P when switching between manual to auto-focusing. I have had intermittent crashes when I’ve used all auto settings for prolonged periods of time
the q-p was released only couple months before leicas q2 so your qp is still only roughly 3 years old(: and i do believe the redesigned the shutter button
I've got many Ms (I am fortunate). But when I want quickness and reliability, I reach for my Q2. Also, if it's raining, my Q2 comes out to play!
So, I have been in this dilemma for months: to get a (used) leica Q2 or an X-pro3. I'm doing exclusively street photography, and my style is almost always that I see a scene with potential I immediately raise the camera, "compose" instinctively through the EVF and shoot. No working of the scene (most of the time), because I mostly shoot people from relatively close to them, so I do need a camera with no (or really minimal) lag before the EVF turns on. You have used both, Q and x-pro3. Which one, then, for quick point-and-shoot candid photography?
Great video! I agree it's a great camera! Actually I got the Q3 and returned it and went for the Q instead (wanted to get a Q-P but couldn't find one). I didn't like the high MP of the Q3, especially since I also want to shoot video and the rolling shutter was just insane. The original Q feels more like a tool to me, the Q3 felt a bit too modern to me.
I had the Q2 and the original Q and ended up selling the Q2 and just keeping the Q. Gave me the images I wanted without the extra files and I felt the low light was better which is a big deal to me, I didn’t care too much about the 4k video on the Q2 since I have dedicated cinema cameras

I couldn't agree more... I loved my Leica Q... I sold it for an M6... totally different experience obviously and don't regret it... but I miss the Q... It's the perfect daily/documentary/travel camera... it was my main camera for 2 years including an 8 month trip of constant travel... keeping an eye for a great Q2 used deal but hard to justify 2 Leica cameras... haha!

Hi there, good info about shooting with Q from the long term perspective. And also your other videos about Q were useful to me. At the end, you are talking about AF/M switch freezing. It is two years ago, so i am prety shure in is not aktual, but i noticed that your lens is broken and it tend to fall from the body. 12:30 is where i can see that. So maybe that is the main issue of the freezing. Bad contact or humidity ao something in this way?

Have you ever experienced any sort of issues like rain or dust with your Leica? I have been interested in the Q-P and want to use it in not-so-ideal situations but am worried (I'm not the greatest with keeping things nice) the lack of weather sealing will be to my disadvantage. just curious your thoughts.
Pentax user here, also use dng. And it is the same as the normal raw file. I can even do pixel shift resoultion images to dng.
Is the Q fixed?!!! Last time we see it , it upgrade it's self into a flexible lense !

I'm guessing you filmed this before the lens started to separate from it's body? Did you send it to Leica to get it fixed? I have a Q too, great camera for all the reasons you mentioned.
Fixing the Q is expensive, Leica USA sent mine to Germany. EV was a free replacement, but, cleaning the sensor of 3 dust spots and the return to Canada cost me $580 USD ($735 CDN). Quarter of the cost of a Q2.
owning a leica is still a dream for me, but when the day comes the Q system is the most likely purchase!

I have the glitchy-until-battery-in-and-out issue with my GRIII, so I think it's just a quality control issue that can happen with cameras in general. I was amazed not to hear the story behind the lens and body separation in this video though!
My gr3 does the same! Sometimes lens retraction stuck in the middle as well. I am just used to at this point.
@@blindkkj That happens to me too. A bit disappointing, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

I have the same issue with my Leica Q! Glad to know that it's not just me having the problem.
Nice review. I still love my Q but struggle with that 28mm focal length because I really like to immerse myself in scenes with lots of people and it’s hard to get up close sometimes. I actually found that switching back to my Xpro3 with 23mm has been refreshing and my compositions have gotten better from using the 28mm so much. My Q occasionally freezes too but for random reasons. I did a factory reset and so far that has fixed it but it’s too early to tell. ✌🏽
Yes, my Q freezes from time to time too. Can't figure out what causes it. But after pulling out the battery, it works fine again. Never lost an image though... Sometimes I don't have this problem for months, and then suddenly it happens. But it is such a fantastic camera, so I forgive it ;)

@@JCNOAOU it does. But now it is in Wetzlar, since the shutter wheel was unstable, and switched between values, even if I didn't touch the wheel 😒 So some electrical/mechanical problem for sure. A long wait, since they say about 6 weeks for a repair...

Back when the Canon 5D classic was out people could manage billboard prints out of 12MP.. so its fine.
Damn i wish there where a 35mm version of the Q !!! I have really a problem with the 28mm focal lenght.
35mm is my preferred focal length. I recently got a Q2 and, honestly, it has taken me a bit to get use to the 28mm focal length. That said, after a few hundred disappointing shots, something kicked in and I felt like I had a great command of the Q2.
milk the Q until it falls apart.( Q is pronounced in German like Kuh was cow so is relatively appropriate. 😆) looking forward to many new videos. 😀
same exact q-p with tape on mic and speaker !. for me the positive is the real feel manual focus and not an focus by wire like all other autofocus cameras like fuji etc... the negative is the average JPGs .. I know, I know ... a Leica owner should always shoot RAW but still I think in 2021 Leica should give us beautiful JPGs . it would go very well with their more minimalistic photographic approach and would make us spend more time shooting and less editing . I also have the occasional freezing / battery thing .
The manual focus is by wire.

I sold my Q2 and switched it out for a GRIII as I found that the Q2 was too big for everyday. I can put the little Ricoh in my pocket and take it everywhere without a second thought. I really liked the Q2 but if I am taking out something that substantial then I’d rather shoot a film Leica.

Hey Ulysses, I'm aware that this video is getting old and now you own Q2, but I was wondering if you had experienced any freeze issue while using your Q-P. I bought Leica Q about a month ago and have experienced the camera freeze on me a few times so far. It looks like it's nothing new amongst the Leica community but I was wondering if you've had similar experience. Cheers!
I actually don't have the Q2. Fingers crossed for the Q3! lol
I had the same issues. You have to pull the battery out to fix it. I had that happen when I changed the Autofocus to Manual Focus while the camera was on. I was gonna say sorry you're experiencing this, but I'm not paid or affiliated with Leica, so let's just say the Q3 better have no issues like this 😬
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto Thanks for the reply! Maybe I was mistaken with Samuel about who owns Q2 😅 I never experienced a camera freeze before so it was quite embarrassing at first. It's kind of a relief to know you had similar issue. Yeah, hope they fix it for the Q3!
I guess now you can upscale resolution in post the resolution is less of an issue.

I dont know if its GAS or not, from 2020 till today i've been selling and buying Leicas. First was my M240 it was good, but back then i didn have much budget to invest in lenses, so then i sold them and got Q Titan, when used Q for the first time i was thinking then what i do with my GRIII and i think i should try interchangeable lens system again but not M, then i sold it and bought SL, the camera was big and heavy and almost unusable for long day walk for street photography, then i sold them and bought MP-240 using manual lenses that i used for SL, but then i kinda lost the passion and feeling that i will not use this body for my daily scenario, but then i sold them again and back to Q again and found the purpose since GR now have the 40mm (and actually i'm not really a normal length lens person) si i guess will be back to Q again and change my GR to the X version.
and all that buy and sell all still from the M240 budget that i used. So it's great how all three different leica system all in the same price range.
I just hope i'm not changing my system anymore for the next 4 years.
Have you had any sensor dust issues with the Q Ulysses?
I haven’t had any issues with mine. I’ve had the speaker and holes taped since day one and have had zero issues.

4x5 is old tech as well and it still blows doors. Summilux and body for >$3K. One camera, one lens. Done!

Maybe Leica will follow Ricoh and propose a Leica Qx with a 40mm F2 lens one day (like the Leica CL of the film days) ? It would be a huge success I think

I find there is a lot of noise over 3200 iso, bulb mode. Hahahahaha joke why can't Leica give us 30 seconds at iso 3200 come on why, a camera with this lens, i have to use my sony with the 20mm f1.8. Why can't i do this with my leica q. They didn't even fix this with the Q2. At this price point, can someone from leica enlighten us on this, I would love to lake panos of the milky way with this camera.
Q would be great if the app actually worked. Id say it was equally horrible as Fujis but at least Fujis actually works. Id say Fuji is a 1 out of 10 which makes Leica Fotos a Zero.
