Oh yeah I forgot to mention. I’ve shot over 100,000 shots on my xpro2 previously. That’s a big factor. I feel like people think I just randomly picked this up and made an opinion on it (to which I even clearly stated, that “I don’t want to make a conclusion on the camera yet”.)

I just came back to this video because I'm thinking about getting the X-Pro 3 instead of the Q2. There are some lenses for the X mount system that have a distance scale (like the XF16mm 1.4 fujifilm-x.com/global/products/lenses/xf16mmf14-r-wr/ ) and you can actually adapt M mount lenses like Faizal Wescott did with the XE-4. Because otherwise I'd fully agree: I did buy an X100V last year because I want to do more zone focusing and sent it back because no distance scale makes manual focusing quite a bit less viable and fun.
Great video though, many great shots you nailed with one battery charge :)

Haha. I don't know about the fujifilm gods, but I bless it. Would have loved to see a film simulation section on the video. Shooting on Provia and then tweaking Raws is of course fine, but doing it exclusively doesn't capture a very important part of this brand's experience. Maybe in a future one?
About your usage question, usually I do use these cameras in autofocus as well, but tend to fix my iso and aperture, and only vary shutter speed to control exposure. Manual exposure, I guess. On my old dslr I usually always do Aperture priority mode.
      Thanks for the videos.

OMG!!! I'm literally stopping at 16:34 because these are all of the things I've been thinking about the Pro 3 but no one else on TH-cam is talking about them. I'm in love with the rangefinder form factor as much as every other fanboy but I still have to question the qualities of the OVF when it comes to manual focusing with Fujinon lenses or vintage lenses. The fact that one has to rely on the tiny EVF in the corner to check focus is just not practical in real life applications. Also, even though the EVF is OLED I didn't find it to be much better than the EVF on my XT2. Thank you so much for your honest impressions. Best XPro3 review on TH-cam!! :) #subscribed

I really enjoyed the insight you had on the Fuji cameras. I have a fuji xt30 that I take as my digital camera for travel and family. Small and can use vintage lenses. I had looked at the Fuji x100v and x pro 3 but I chose the xt30 as it is my entry into the Fuji eco system. Great camera but I agree that the manual focusing is a joke. Once the fix that I will definitely be happy. I really dislike the focus by wire. And I enjoy shooting manually as I am a film shooter as well. But I will say I do enjoy the ease of use on Fuji cameras and the nostalgic feeling like everyone else. And they look good too :) keep up the good work! Love your stuff!

      @MrChomiq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, there's also hybrid ERF that can be enabled when you're in OVF mode with AF-S or MF. This can give you a split focus function similar to a rangefinder. It's been there since the X-Pro2. Good enough demo: th-cam.com/video/ziMH8u0oQdM/w-d-xo.html

    • @_buttertigers
      @_buttertigers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MrChomiq i personally use this method while adapting M lenses but I really find the hybrid screen distracting and introsive since it "pops" so much more than the OVF itself and gets in the way of your actual framelines.

Great video Ulysses. Regarding the manual focus, this is what still makes Leica a clear winner to me as well, for the kind of photography I do. Manual focus to me is faster than autofocus for street photography, assuming that one works with the hyperfocal.
I thought though that the fujinon 23mm f/1.4 was a true manual focus lens with distance scale and would be worth trying... never had the opportunity to give it a try yet. What remains then is the fuji viewfinder not being a rangefinder...

I took my new XPro 3 out Monday for its first use with a 35f2 lens. The camera seems far less threatening to people compared with my DSLR. The OVF is fun to use and works well with the ability to see outside the frame.
The battery lasted around 150 shots only, all through use of the OVF and some EVF, but no LCD at all. Hopefully the capacity improves with use! Focus is very good in daylight. It did miss a few basic exposures that my Nikon D7000 would not have, either under or overexposing faces between shots by about a stop. Much to learn I have!
Perhaps it's muscle memory but I am able to operate my DSLR settings way faster than those of the XPro. That's probably my biggest gripe with the XPro - operation requires too much visual confirmation of buttons versus 100% feel without removing my eye from the viewfinder. For example there is no tactile distinction of the Q button from the grip, so I have to take my eye away from the viewfinder to see where the tiny, flush button is... it's somewhere under my thumb knuckle, but not quite... sure. Then the EVF has to wake up again when I reapply my eye to the viewfinder. Same goes for the fn button above it. Some smarter micro design could permit old school looks but better controls feel in the next model.
Finally, the USB access door is flimsy and lets down the overall quality impression of the camera, IMO. Plastic is fine, it just needs a hinge. Film simulations are nice to have, though I have those in my Nikon anyway, and they're 100% user definable in the Nikon.
As a next iteration I'd like to have a larger battery, more distinction in those fn buttons and perhaps IBIS as some icing on the cake. Mind you I'll probably replace my DSLR with a Z 6II and keep the XPro3 as a niche camera. The XPro3 is quite a joy to use.

I think you nailed it with the Contax G2 comparison. It feels like the natural digital successor and matches the crisp, quick style I loved the G2 for. Just with the G2 (the "poor man's Leica") it's a totally different camera and sits in a class of it's own with different aims and audience.
I think the same principle applies to the HVF. People tend to overlook the functionality of having both OVF and EVF. While the OVF doesn't function like a traditional rangefinder it still retains the visual benefits (natural uninhibited view, extended framing outside the focal length) while also giving a substantial boost to battery life. Plus an EVF if/when you need it.
I love being able to shoot all day with the OVF like I've got my G2 with unlimited rolls, then switch to EVF at night with -6EV AF coupled with a manual exp comp dial for quick 'TTL' adjustment. Feels hyper versatile, despite its niche reputation.

Before Panasonic went to m4/3 it made one 4/3 range finder style camera called the L1 and it had very much the same controls and style as that one. Fun camera I kept until last year until I sold for a trade in since I had not used it in years. It was the industries very first live view camera.

Thanks for the Great Video! Very nice and Lots of effort.
The camera however is relatively huge!
Its as big as a fullframe leica rangefinder and especially with that lens its even bigger than a leica with a summicron, summarit, zeiss or voigtlander. So I think id take my Leica, the x100v or the xt30. In my opinion if it is not fullframe, it should have the advantage of being smaller. Anyway great video! 😊anyway.... what do you guys mean by ease of use? Fujifilms have like hundreds of menu options and hundreds of sub menu options.... for a Leica user that is insane 😅

So, I have been in this dilemma for months: to get a (used) leica Q2 or an X-pro3. I'm doing exclusively street photography, and my style is almost always that I see a scene with potential I immediately raise the camera, "compose" instinctively through the EVF and shoot. No working of the scene (most of the time), because I mostly shoot people from relatively close to them, so I do need a camera with no (or really minimal) lag before the EVF turns on. You have used both, Q and x-pro3. Which one, then, for quick point-and-shoot candid photography?

I'm hoping to try the X-Pro3 with M lenses. I started with (and loved) Voigtlaender on a NEX without any EVF, but never used manual focus on the X-Pro1 because the XF lenses just aren't fun to use that way. The X System was so much better in every other way, and had nice lenses of its own so it didn't bother me at all. It will be a while before I get one, so I'd encourage you to report your experiences on the X-Pro3 with M lenses.

Had my x-t3 for a couple months. My major Gripe is that the Fuji Raw files are a little strange commimg from Sony. They seem to have less latitude for editing. The colors SOOC are great but if your tastes are like mine which I consider "unnatural" they can end up looking cheesier when pushed in any certain direction.

Not sure if I should make the investment, having already an XT3, financially it makes more sense to get something smaller like an X100V for that matter, or an XE3/4 (when they finally release it) as an ILC to take advantage of the lenses I already have.

Some of the Fuji lenses have distance scales, but they're a bit limited. The 23mm f/1.4, for example, has it, but markings are not not very useful:
    0.28 meters
    0.5 meters
    1 meter
    5 meters
    1 foot
    2.5 feet
    8 feet
I'm hoping the new 18mm f/1.4 will have the same manual focus clutch... but based on the mockups they showed recently, it probably won't have it.
Fuji does a good on-screen scale, but the problem with that is that you have to look at the screen! Which kind of defeats the purpose of a camera with aperture, shutter and ISO dials. Even the Ricoh GR bests it here, because on the GR you can get to a point where you can adjust snap focus distances by feel, if you configure it right, and with enough practice.
I think Fuji can just do a separate control ring instead. Like Leica did with the Leica X and the X-Vario. And even the Q/Q2 is actually focus by wire, so, it is possible to make good focus by wire. Some of the recent Sony lenses also have pretty decent focus by wire response. But of course, hell would have to freeze over before Sony will come out with an AF lens with a distance scale.

Fujis new cameras does improve auto focus on their older lenses drastically. To the point it's like having a new lens. The 35 1.4 on the Xpro 1 is garbage. It was reselling for 2-300$ cad before the xt-3 came out. Once the xt-3 released the resale went up to 500-600$ cad.
