RC Drift Intro | Cheap AWD vs Premium RWD RC Drift Cars

  • People ask on a very regular basis about recommendations for getting into RC drifting.
    In this video, I go through some of the differences between the cheaper AWD setups that are available and the more expensive RWD dedicated drift platforms that people can choose from.
    I firmly believe that both have their place, and a reason why a certain person would enjoy one more than another.
    To demonstrate this, I am using a Redcat Thunder Drift, and a MST RMX2.0S.
    Redcat Thunder Drift: amzn.to/3ECF2lt

    Update!
    If you are looking to get into the RWD RC drift world - I suggest you check out these 3. They are the best offered right now: th-cam.com/video/yRmuX4-UNmE/w-d-xo.html
    The Redcat Thunder Drift I show in this video has also been discontinued. BUT - the Redcat Lightning Drift might actually be better. Here it is: bit.ly/461yic3

Although I am still new to the R/C world, you’ve probably inspired me to get a RWD drift car in the near future! You’ve got a subscriber! Happy Drifting!

    Picked up a MST RMX 2.0 R35 Skyline about a week ago after countless hours of research. Main factor in the purchase was my small apartment, which the MST navigates with ease. Beautiful car and well worth the investment. Nice vid on the comparison between awd and rwd.

    I think if you had a track marked or some traffic cones then you might find the street more of a fun surface with those obstacles. I drive my TT-02D in the parking lot at work and powersliding around the curbs at the end of the aisles at full speed is super fun. Like you said, RWD for precision and control, and then AWD for all-out full throttle slides.

    Beautiful, Just the video I was looking for. Have looked into it on and off over the years and decided today to try using my 1/8th buggy with a set of 1/8 truck rims that I'm never going to glue up and went to a local carpark, Set up 4 cones for a layout similar to your 'elongated C' and had a ball. Was clumsy but ridiculous fun, Now I'm looking for a drift car. Was a bit lost in the 2 vs 4 thing but you've given a lovely, Thoughtful rundown of pros and cons so I'll be going 4wd for my situation. Thank you

    Great video! For sure the rear wheel drive car is smoother! Just look at those endpoints in the front wheel when it’s drifting, pretty hard to have that much counter steer with an all wheel drive.your absolutely right though, if I were to get into competition drifting 2 wheel drive is the way to go, but if wanted a more multi purpose car that can do it all pretty good including rallying and off road drifting the cheaper all wheel drive is the much less expensive (sometimes) and better way to go. My self, I enjoy multi use cars more than more focused single purpose vehicles! Great job on this!👊🏼💯👍🏻

    70 year old newbie here. Was into this Losi Micro 20 years ago. Watched my son go threw the car's and Nitro monster trucks. We had fun. I'm bored now. Was thinking of jumping back in but getting lost in the choices. My wish list is Brushless, Lipo, maybe blue tooth, must wheelie on demand. Fast, parts available, durable, tunable. Was thinking rwd for simplicity???? The AWD has more capability??? Saw a vid on the new Traxxes gravedigger and it impressed me but kinda big. Also liked there Bandit VXL 70MPH. Like the Mini T2 brushless RTR. Not planning on racing. Just want to mess around the house or take to a skate park. Might get 2 full setups so I can have a friend or neighbor over and sit in the driveway and chase each other around the grass and the concrete or out in the street. Might be fun to take over two a friends house for some cheap entertainment and a few beers. I also have a real dune buggy and go to the dunes. Be nice to have something to play with when my real buggy breaks down. I'm feeling lost in all these new wonderful technology choices. Money is not the deciding factor but don't want to go overboard ether. I figure If I get 2 similar set up's. I have less spare parts and no one will claim unfair advantage. hehehe Except that I might have more practice..... Maybe I could just ease into it again and pass some of the stuff on to the grandkids as I get more familiar? What Say You? Enjoyed your vid. Nice editing. Sorry for the rambling.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Sounds like you have been giving this some thought!
      A few suggestions from me:
      Go AWD, skip RWD. It really is just much more capable, especially when you started talking about the dunes.
      You will be looking for a basher vehicle - so rule out drift, crawling, etc.
      Then, it comes down to budget and size of the space you will run in.
      If you think you will be in the dunes more, I would suggest something like the Arrma Kraton 6S. This is an 1/8 scale truggy that floats over big obstacles and handles really well. Throw on some paddle tires, and you will be amazed what it can do.
      If you think you will be more around the house, you might want to step it down some (not sure how big your yard is). Check out something like the Arrma Typhon 3S - this is literally one of my favorite vehicles. Handles well, nice and durable, and moderate on the price scale. When you go to the dunes, you might be able to put some paddle tires on it and still have a blast.

    I made a custom awd rc car based off of a car that was meant for touring. I changed the tires, camber, tow, and packed the rear diff with grease (not locked). All in about $200. It drifts very well, in and outside on asphalt and is a ton of fun. The one issue i have although it might just be specific to my car is that the dogbone driveshafts are under a lot of stress when the wheels turn and break after a while. However, with awd, you dont need a lot of steering angle so reducing it helped greatly.

    • @RoadsideRC
      @RoadsideRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool. What you did is basically the same as what Tamiya did with the TT-02D and many others have done following them.
      If you tried a RWD car next to your AWD car, you would find a whole different driving experience.

    Drift wise though I'm slowly getting into it, but I did going gor the tt01e I didn't buy it as a drifter as such I bought it because I wanted the euro racing truck, but I also made it into a fun skyline r34 drifter.. Your definitely right you just can't beat a proper 2wd drifter for perfect surface drifting but if that's not all your really be doing going the other route of a 4wd and drift conversion is good, then you can also convert it back and get those high speed uses around the street.

    This is honest and true. I find most people will actually be happier with the thunder drift in the real world. The LHS is actually a rarity for most people and a lot of those don't have a track, and drift tracks just don't exist near a lot of people, many people don't have a 2 car garage to draw on Nd even some of those have rough concrete. A dedicated chassis will always be superior, thats why its dedicated, but there's a lot to be said fir a more universal and accessible vehicle. Parts for redcat are becoming easier and easier to find. MST, difficult state side. I agree.

      What you showed tia on your video is a great example of what we can expect in selecting a drift car. I was looking at drift cars 6 or 7 years ago when I assumed AWD was all that was being offered. I tried one out at an RCX show that I beloved was based on an AWD HPI platform and it was fun. I eventually settled on my TC4 knowing asphalt parking lots were all I would have access to and I could always swap tires back to a grip car when I wanted a grip car. I had made my own pvc tires as well as buying a set that were supposed to have a little better grip for asphalt. I never really got the drifting down to a perfection which I attributed to not understanding weight bias or maybe running a gyro but it sure was fun. I’m thinking 4wd is still suited better to my local area. Thankyou again. Sub earned.

  • @MysteriousRJC

    Are there drift tires that with a RWD drift car would provide traction outside on a street/parking lot the way you got in your driveway? I want a RWD but would be using it on my back cement patio or the asphalt road... no local track here. I could do in my bigger back garage like you were doing but I'm specifically curious if it can get sufficient traction on an outdoor surface.

      Hey there! Glad this was helpful.
      1) The YD2 chassis is a good one. I haven't seen it as cheaper than the MST chassis head-to-head before, so be careful where you are looking. Both Yokomo and MST base chassis start at around $200.
      2) Not sure what events you are talking about.
      3) When you get a drift chassis, you also need to get a GOOD gyro, a proper drift gyro, esc and motor, transmitter and receiver, body + paint, and wheels & tires. You will spend much more on the components than the chassis.

    First drift chassis I got was the hpi e10 and it was the worst mistake I made still have it sitting in a shelf with a 15 t motor in it that makes the drive shaft bounce. Fixed my mistake by buying an mst rmx 2.0 rtr and I loved it so bought the mst fxx-d for a realistic feel with motor front mounted and then got a tamiya tt01 and slapped a brushless 3300kv in it and it’s perfect. All my friend use awd drift chassis here in Calgary but with over drive and underdrive systems to help out with control. so every time a new comer asks what drift rc should I get I say it’s always based on three questions 1) what your price range? 2. Are you easy on the throttle or a heavy trigger ? For this I find if your easy rwd is the best way to go because your feathering the throttle but with an awd it’s more all out power 3. What type of surface are you running on? If you like to hit the street go awd but if you do carpet or smooth concrete or tile then go rwd! It is tough though to help out the new comers that’s why I usually just let my friends try my rwd and awd to see what they like better some people pick up my rwd and instantly set it back down some people love it
