Also, adding to your good points, charging stations should be classed as infrastructure with concessions as with fuel stations but everyone just sits back because "Tesla will do" and Tesla will fight the (our) fight. The uptime of non Tesla charging stations are dismal at best and would never have improved. So, perhaps the real reason is Elon saying "fck you" to the above as there is now critical mass and (some) mainstream support for EV's. So in effect, go figure it out yourselves while we work on FSD and Taxi's.
i see a down side to this. If i was on that team and was one of the top producers i would not go back to a company that fired me because the dept head pissed him off. The supercharger team was run like the DMV and I think that’s why he fired everyone. His team would take almost 3-7 months and 30k per port while independent contractors were doing it in a month for 7k. Case closed.

The 500 people consisted of Program managers, project managers, design managers and construction managers. The new construction was/is contracted out to local electrical and civil construction contractors and electrical utilities, not Tesla.
I came to the same conclusion as you. When Tesla starts making robotaxis the charger network becomes a liability. It would enable a competitor to sell EVs, while you dont sell any yourself. It makes sense to slow down building out chargers or even just stop it altogether.
Oh my Goodness, thank you for this. I was thinking the same thing!! The fact that Tesla has won the supercharger industry/race is new to me and make’s complete sense as well!
There's another component. . Imagine Elon flying home from China (after a successful meeting). Looks at the Supercharging data. He sees a problem. The rate of expansion was based on first Ford, then others joining the network *AND* building EVs which would use those chargers. But, now they've all "pulled back". If Tesla sells off *existing* locations I think there may be a lot of Drivers unhappy with price hikes.
I don’t think Tesla wants to sell off any locations. They will continue the buildout . But Elon knows they have reached escape velocity and charging has gone from a critical mission to low priority, because now the flywheel is spinning and others complete the infrastructure.

The supercharger team had YEARS to support the Cybertruck and failed to even try. Tinucci KNEW the requirements for Cybertruck charging and left the supercharger network incapable of accommodating demands of 800v architecture. That alone is grounds for being dismissed. Daniel Ho, director of new vehicles, was fired for the same reason.

I don’t know if you want to get out of a reoccurring income business. I wonder how much maintenance was involved with the super charger business? There is a lot of name recognitions wit Tesla Super Chargers. The name and the stations is really good passive marketing of Teslas’s good quality.
I think the future of supercharging will also include some kind of wireless charging either by induction or some other similar tech. That way the actual supercharging stalls could accept a car without a driver and still be able to charge without interventions from a person. Hopefully not too long now when you could summon your car from across the road or across the country with no interventions.
As a long-time consumer of Tesla blogs on TH-cam from many different bloggers, I was stunned by your thoughtful deep-thinking view of the reasons behind the Supercharger employee firing. Very thoughtful. I am now a new subscriber and look forward to more content from you!!!!
The issue is Elon, expects a work commitment of 80 hours a week, to accomplish the goal. Poor strategic planning causes the departments to grow. If Elon wants to have the commitment, he needs to manage the human resource must better. The better way is a strategic human resource plan.
One of the why Tesla stock is worth more is the super charging network. They just got many ev makers to adopt Tesla standard and all the fanboys were happy. Now they pivot away and the excuses come flying. The truth is there’s no money in it.
I'm a little unclear about the phrase, "building the SuperChargers." Will Tesla still be building (manufacturing) the SuperCharger devices, but not be building (developing) the SuperCharger "stations." It seems to me (BTW: I know nothing) that manufacturing and selling SuperChargers would be a great business. But, Tesla should let BP, Walmart, sit-down restaurants, et al, companies with property (space) and drive-by traffic build the actual site as a value-ad to their business.
What is not discussed is the current state of battery development. It has come to a point, where higher capacities are available at lower cost(most of it from China). With that in mind, there is not much need for supercharging except for long highway trips. Robotaxi adoption will take a few years, and adding custom superchargers are more work. Most likely Robocabs will have less passenger capacity(two seaters), with double the range, needing chargers only at designated minimally manned superchargers. Just some 💭
I just love how people just like to make idiots out of themselves, it just makes me laugh how incredibly stupid people are. Maybe someday the idiots will learn that Tesla is not going away.
It was bloat. They were overstaffed and filled with inefficiencies. Musk hated the business model. BP and shell want their tech, sell it to them. Let them negotiate the land and install. Why would Tesla want to ever do that?
People have been talking about this theory since the rehiring began, and while there is no way to prove it is accurate without Elon chiming in directly, it is consistent with how he has always managed his company’s. Elon is all about efficiency in all he does, which not only allowed him to successfully run Twitter/X with a small fraction of the employees that were there when he bought Twitter, but it allowed him to produce the best cars in the world at a fraction of what traditional manufacturers can do, while revolutionizing the manufacturing process. It allowed him to build a rocket that can go to space, return, and be reused for a fraction of what it would cost NASA, who couldn’t even do that. It allowed him to create the Boring Company which can build tunnels for autonomous vehicles significantly faster and cheaper than our government, and with virtually no waste. And this theme continues for all of his other endeavors. As for Ross Gerber, he has zero credibility when it comes to Elon Musk and Tesla. He has been trying to weasel his way onto the Tesla board for a long time, and hopefully it will never work. Elon has been successful in everything he has done, and he does not need someone like Ross trying to tell him how to run his businesses, particularly when Ross is not even close to being qualified to even work for Elon at Tesla, or at any of his other companies.
It was taking Teslas team to complete builds 9+ months that 3rd party was building in less than 2. If it was impossible, the 3P wouldn't be doing it lol. So he knew it was BS. I do wonder if this is a flex due to them holding back his earned pay package. That was a dirty move against Elon. He had an agreement, they should honor that. He will put the money right back into his company's. They're afraid of how much more powerful he will be with no debt. He could buy another large competitor.
