8 Times the Real Ending Was in Premium DLC

  • A good ending should tie up the loose ends and show all the preceding stuff added up to something. One surefire way to annoy players therefore is to put the real ending of the game into some premium DLC that doesn't come with the game as standard. Subscribe for more lists! www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
    This video ponders those instances where a game's true ending was in DLC you had to pay for. Watchers beware giant spoilers for the following games: Fallout 3, Asura's Wrath, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Dragon Age Origins, The Evil Within, Batman Arkham Knight, Outlast and its Whistleblower DLC, and Dead Space 3.
    With Fallout 3, for example, we were still complaining to friends, family and nervous passers-by about the ending half a year after it came out.
    As much as we loved the game, we were still salty over how your decision right at the end came down to either sacrifice yourself to a room full of deadly radiation or sacrifice Sarah Lyons to a room full of deadly radiation. All while Fawkes stood there like a giant, useless, radiation-proof pile of no help at all.
    Then along came Fallout 3 DLC Broken Steel, which modified your final decision to include the mind-bogglingly obvious option of sending in a radiation-proof companion to soak up the rads and turn on the water purifier. Get lost, canonical ending of the main game: the Wasteland was saved and everybody made it out alive.
    Or how about Asura's Wrath? When your plot is as involved and frankly as furious as that of Asura's Wrath, you might well lose track of what's going on and, in your confusion, forget to put your ending on the game disc.
    We hope it wasn't for more cynical financial reasons than that it was arranged so you had to spend an extra fiver to get the downloadable final four episodes of Asura's Wrath to experience the true ending.
    In episodes 19 to 22, Asura's daughter Mithra, the one he's spent the entire game trying to protect, becomes inhabited by a talking golden spider, who turns out to be the Lord of All Creation. Who Asura kills when he takes on his final, godly form, ripping the space time continuum a new one in the process. Nothing major, then?
    If you just played what was on the disc and left it at that, well, that's like the time I walked out of the Sixth Sense ten minutes early. You know, that movie about the nice psychologist who everyone ignores.

    The reason Asura's wrath was behind a pay wall was because the developers wanted a second game. However the publishers said it didn't go so well so they cancelled it. So the developers wanted the fans to get the true ending so they released it as DLC.

    To be fair in Asura's Wrath's case, the end of the game DLC was originally meant to be it's own game (a sequel). Unfortunately... the game didn't do well enough in the sales department, which I still don't know how seeing as Asura's Wrath is the most amazing over the top bada** game ever to exist, so plans for the sequel were cut and any parts of the story already planned out were slashed apart and reworked to become a DLC.

    Basically 99% of the content in Destiny is DLC. Seriously, if you don't have the DLCs, you can hardly do anything. Oh, and the original weapons and armor are pretty much rendered useless and now all the good ones are only accessible through DLC.

    • @ademonslayer7130
      @ademonslayer7130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Year 1, I agree... year two, all the content put out is new, and wasn't just cut from the original game and sold for a little extra money (because Activision are money-grabbing assholes, and Bungie sold their soul to them...) Besides, destiny is an open online multiplayer game, the progression system would be fucked if you didn't need the new DLC to max your character, because the only reason your character needs to get stronger is because the enemies you face keep getting stronger. The ending to the story is also no where in sight (I mean this is a 10 year project, with multiple standalone games being released, and we're still in year two, on the first game... They're essentially still building up all the players and pieces that will be at the end, one thing's for sure, this story is far from over...) At this point you're still just encountering new enemies you have to kill with brute force, before (hopefully) coming to the conclusion that the darkness won't just go away, and you have to destroy it at it's source...
      The vanilla game actually did have a sufficient ending, it was just the content between the beginning and the end, and at the end too, was so scarce and shallow that most of the experience became a nightmare of a grindfest to get to max level, and any information about the world you are fighting in you have to get from grimoire cards that you can't actually view in-game... But that was year 1, and yeah it still has the grimoire card issue, but it's a bearable problem with how much better the story telling has become with the new content, and plus all the youtubers who have done lore videos, so you don't have to sit for hours reading through grimoire cards, trying to piece together random snippets of information... And can you believe some players obnoxiously believe year 1 was better than year 2?

    DA:Origins shouldn't have been included because of the open-ended nature of the game. The choices made there need not carry-over to the next installments. In Inquisition however, with Solas's background and plans revealed, now that's the bummer.

      No, I agree with OP here. I think the Trespasser DLC shouldn't have been a DLC, especially since I personally don't find it that fun. Puzzles involving fancy teleportation mirrors really aren't my cup of tea, and the whole Qunari terrorist attack/invasion was an OK story, but not mind blowing. That said, I won't complain any more, since I have over 200 hours into Inquisition and find it to be a fantastic game, despite EA's incessant cash grabbing strategy

    • @jethro87
      @jethro87 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      +RhodosGuard because there's no middle ground there, right? Well, wrong. You can still create DLC that has it's OWN story, like for example Dawnguard/Skyrim. Are you getting something crucial from this expansion? No, it has own quests, own story you can follow, and doesn't impact what you already know, it doesn't change the course of main story a bit, it's additional part of the game, and you don't really need it with main game, but you may want it.
      Same with Witcher's expansions, you don't need to change the course of main game, you don't need to go 'Oh, we forgot about this. Let's say $5 and we finish the story', but still create something worth paying for, this is what people want.

    I'm not sure I would consider Dragon Age Origins to belong on this list, but then, I was never the greatest Morrigan fan - to me, the story was all about the Warden-Alistair romance, and that one got wrapped up nicely albeit sadly with him dying to save her life. ;)
    Dragon Age Inquisition, on the other hand... Sure, the Darkspawn Magister person got killed, but he was really not the heart of the story, at least for me. I felt like it was all about the Inquisition as an organisation, and that story didn't get wrapped up one way or the other until Trespasser.

    A double one for Baldur's Gate II.
    Not only was there an expansion Throne of Bhaal that finished the plot of the campaign with the final epic battle.
    The ending was a bit rushed and the authors didn't like it - so they made a mod "Ascension", which modified some aspects of Throne of Bhaal to make the final confrontation truly epic.

    Even though Morrigan is like the best character in the whole series and i date her in every male playthrough and I would never finish a DA:O playthrough without the Witchhunter DLC, the actual story relevance of that DLC isn't that high was we see in Inquision where i practically didn't matter if Morrigan had an old god soul child or not. The MUCH MUCH more underwelming ending that was only improved through a DLC is DA: Inquisition with the Trespasser DLC, without that the ending of the main game is like "meh...ok...whatever"

      @RyansFine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zoedegenerate6703 I mean if you romance her she has some character development where she learns to care about people more, but she does let her goal of defeating the Archdemon get in ways of that. Tbh if you don't like her at first I doubt much will change your mind. I like Morrigan, but mostly cause she makes me laugh especially her banter with Alistair. If she was a real person she'd be toxic as all hell😂😂

    • @angelofpiggies
      @angelofpiggies 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyansFine You don't even have to romance her for that. From the start she's taken aback whenever you're kind to her and, as you gain her approval, you gradually see that her abrasiveness is just a front to hide how lonely she is. She almost cries when you reach friendship level with her. I wanted to hug her so badly at that moment.
      She's friendlier in Inquisition anyway, so people who don't like Origins Morrigan might like Inquisition Morrigan. Or at least, she's friendlier if she has a child. I've yet to play the series with a Warden who sacrifices themselves, but I imagine she's much the same, mother or not.

    Minecraft Dungeons actually did this after you beat the Arch-Illager. Basically, the Orb of Dominance, his source of power, gets shattered, so Archie was scared of the heroes until they extended a hand & had Archie dance with them as the storm atop Highblock Castle dissipated. But suprise suprise, turns out the Orb has a mind of its own, reassembling itself after everyone left the castle. Apparently, a few of the Orb's shards scattered throughout the Overworld, causing catastrophe related to where they landed & corrupting the strongest lifeform each shard found in where they landed (possibly even *creating* the end-boss of each DLC), setting the stage for the Overworld-related DLCs. The story implies that once all the Orb's shards were disposed of, the power within them escaped to the End after reuniting with the rest of the orb, which set the grounds for a rematch between the Heart of Ender (now the *Vengeful* Heart of Ender) and the heroes in the Echoing Void DLC. The Echoing Void DLC is actually where the story of Minecraft Dungeons ends, but the rest of the story is up to the order you played the Overworld DLCs *&* if you ever played the Flames of The Nether DLC, the only chronologically non-canon MCD DLC.

    Should include the Trespasser DLC for DA: Inquisition.

    • @nonducorduco7356
      @nonducorduco7356 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No because that wasn't the 'real' ending. The end of the base game is the real ending - it wrapped up the Inquisitor's story. They defeated the baddie. That's an ending - even if the final boss fight sucked.

    • @snowinowen4
      @snowinowen4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NoodlesBo They included Witch Hunt on the list, something which doesn't even wrap much up other than the Morrigan romance. It's set after you beat the bad guy after all.

    • @kyrenity
      @kyrenity 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      NoodlesBo I don't really buy the whole 'Corephyus was the main villain and when you kill him it's the end of the story'. He was never going to succeed, after the half-way point of the game you know that he doesn't have enough to beat the Inquisition so the "ending" was very obvious and underwhelming. The whole undertone about Solus being the real villain here and the one that's going to cause all the chaos in the next DA is a more fitting ending; it has more significance to the main storyline than Corypheus and his ball, and from a gameplay standpoint, the DLC was a better end-game challenge. I will always think that it was just cut off as DLC just to make more money because it's too important to miss, imo.

    hum, there Witch Hunt from Dragon age origins is so short and give almost nothing to the story so it's not really the end. Trespasser for inquisition however contains the whole conclusion so...

    I hate that people don't complain when they have to pay for a DLC just to get an ending. What happened to giving the consumer respect? Why can't the ending be in the actual games for these and other examples? It's because people keep buying it. If they seek out games and avoid ones they hear in reviews they can't play all the way through without paying extra the publishers will stop abusing this crap.

      Terrible thing is, generally you're expected to get reviews out at a fast pace. Most reviewers don't have enough time to beat the game :/

    A couple I would've added to this list:
    -Bioshock Infinite: though a second playthrough post-endgame reveal will give you SOME answers, the real "closure" doesn't come until Burial at Sea.
    -Dragon Age: Inquisition instead of Origins: I'd say Trespasser meets the description of this list a liiiiiiittle more thoroughly than Witch Hunt does.
    -Mass Effect 3: I don't care what anyone else says, Citadel is the real ending of the series, not the fucking starbrat infodump and "choose your Instagram filter for the galaxy" bullshit. Citadel gives closure in a way the main game doesn't (e.g. Thane's memorial service, Mordin singing Amazing Grace, the reunion, etc.) and really did feel more like an ending than the ACTUAL ending did. Just my opinion.
    But I 100% agree with you re:Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations and The Evil Within. I'm still a bit salty over Fallout 3's ending and the fact that the Kidman campaign was DLC AT ALL (I think it should've been unlockable instead of DLC).

      +sammeboy11 What did Javiks DLC add? I beat the game with it, without it and with it, in that order, each multiple times (I own 2 versions of it). The leviathan DLC I cannot speak for but I certainly feel the citadel DLC cleared up ME2s start for me since you can clone a dead thing but cannot revive a dead thing without exact working copies of said organism's organs so having the exact same Shepard was impossible without a donor.

      +sammeboy11 Definitely and I hated that. I loved the DLC but having such important pieces of the story stuck behind a pay wall is ridiculous

      Jhawk 163 having the conclusion of the game include the beginning of the reapers and the fate of the protheans (as well as the advancement of the asari) in dlc was robbery. It didn't add to the ending aside from extra dialogue but it's more about context

    For Dragon Age, why use Witch Hunt and not Trespasser, from Inquisition, which was multiple times referred to as the "actual ending" to the game???
