"the water level", "the sewer level", "the escort mission", "the stealth section" comes to mind. Unless your game is *designed* for that from the ground up, just don't even try to put it in.

RE4's Ashley was relatively inoffensive, though. Her AI was smart enough that she'd get the hell out of the way during a firefight, and you could always just stuff her in a nearby bin if things got too hairy. ... Except for the water room. Seriously, FUCK that place.
Mass Effect 2 actually had an escort mission that was really interesting and well done, mainly because the devs managed to give the escortee some halfway-decent AI instead of the usual "rabid suicide-monkey" setting we all know and hate.
Xen was meh, in my opinion. As for On A Rail, what are you talking about!? That’s an excellent level once you learn to just leave the train behind and never actually go “on a rail” at all!
I just played through that mission a few weeks ago. I found it a little irksome, but I was really surprised to hear about how it was pretty much universally hated by the internet. It took me 2-3 attempts and I never died. The shit Vice City put you through was much worse IMO. Combined with the fact that the game takes away all your shit and plenty of your money each death (And there were a LOT of unavoidable deaths) made that game much worse than it needed to be.

GetToHellOut I'm playing them both on my PS2 right now. I just played SA and, nope, I still have all my weapons after dying. I think there might be a cheat code enabled or they just don't punish you for deaths for the first few missions. Maybe the game's taking some of my ammo instead?

You forgot one: the Asteroid-shooting segment in Dead Space. Ruined an otherwise great experience, and it made me rage quit due to how bullshit it was. Fuck that part. They couldn't have just made that a cutscene, seriously?
I listened to the devs explain how that happened and it made sense. Basically, they spend so much time playing and replaying sections while testing and developing that their sense of difficulty gets skewed. That's why play testing is so important.
I was going to comment on the asteroid cannon section if no one else did! Totally agree - there were a couple of tries on my first playthrough where I almost gave up on the game altogether. So glad I perservered though!
I got Dead Space recently, and was playing it relentless up until that part. I did it, and then died in that long walk outside. It reloaded before the shooting segment.
What, no mention of the Index level from Halo: Combat Evolved? Surely I can't be the only one who found that level to be long, tedious, and obnoxious, having to fend off waves of those fffffffricking Flood while that little humming Wheatley-wannabe bastard took his sweet time opening the doors. Metal Gear Solid 2 When you have to escort Emma through the flooded section of the base. An escort mission, mixed with a water level. Literally gaming hell at it's purest form.

The pod racing level in the original Lego Star Wars is much worse than the swoop racing. Easy to mess up and then you have to watch the same unskippable cut scenes over and over again.
It'll never happen. Steam makes a killing off of all the games they sell, especially since major developers like Bethesda are using their platform. Valve literally makes more money by doing nothing than they do by making games. Valve makes roughly 700 million a year through Steam. If they released HL3, they'd have to sell roughly 12 million units to make that much back. As a business, would you choose to produce? Or just stick with distributing?
Asteroids in "Dead Space". Wonderful game overall, Dead Space. But what was basically as Asteroids arcade mini-game nearly ruined the game. Thankfully that was the only part like that.
It was as fun as the race in Mafia 1. That means: a lot of fun. (no irony here) And to claim Mafia isn't about racing when you drive around half of the time....
+Wicked Witch Of The West in the directors cut they added some stealth and hacking, most notably hacking. Like when you fight namir, there is a second floor with a vent that leads to a room with a camera and a terminal to hack which if done correctly spawns robots to fight him. With Barrett there is something similar with turrets, you can technically stealth both of these.
Battles themselves weren't that bad per se (for what general design of the game allowed in terms of combat), the problem is the lack of "chose your approach" thing for those who value it in a Deus Ex game.
the one level i cant get past is the three armed monster that you have to distract with grenades, but everytim im on the ladder, it gibs me instantly and i nearly threw my mouse at the screen and yelled "FUCK THIS" while my parents were in the next room XD
Really? I actually liked the swoop races in The Old Republic. It was easy money and strangely addicting for me. (Older brother liked it too and we would try and beat each others times on Tatooine)
I was indifferent to em, they weren't particularly interesting but they were fast enough and yeah, easy money. Certainly was not a level that nearly ruined the game though lol.
I hated the part with the murder investigation on dantooine, You are just having a nice stroll killing mandolorians and some jedi shows up and forces you to investigate a boring murder. Played this game a hundred times and this is my least favorite.
How many people are old enough to remember the unskipable tutorial mission in the first Driver? Doing all those advanced driving maneuvers in an underground car park with a short time frame with a few fuck ups allowed :/
I almost gave up on that game completely. I was so excited after all the awesome things I heard about it and I can't describe how deflating it was that I couldn't seem to get past that stupid tutorial!! I did eventually but only weeks (maybe months) after I quit trying I gave it another go with a fresh mind and knowing what I was getting in to. I admit, it was pretty satisfying to beat, but still...
Call me weird but I actually enjoyed the speeder levels of Knights of the old republic, after the first go I understood the controls and blasted past it no problem.
My best time on the Ahto track of the swoop race circuit was 00:22.14. Went into a veritable trance. My friend was shocked about how the time I finally succeeded I beat the target time by nearly half a second after failing numerous times by about a tenth of a second.
It's frustratingly wrong if you have the dexterity of a washing machine. Me, having the dexterity of a Sloth, beat it just fine at age 11 and enjoyed the heck out of it.

A level where you have to actually observe the area and decide the proper method of progression and then handle it with some care will always suck for the casual peasants. Maybe they should go play some Madden instead.
You forgot Uncharted: Drake's Fortune---- the Jet Ski level "Heading Up River"... Trying to maneuver the jet ski up cascades and dodging bullets and exploding barrels with Elena's shoddy shooting skills. Also Kingdom Hearts 1: The Riku battle. The only way to survive was to continually glide around the level, landing to heal and do one attack before gliding again. Every time you lost, you had to watch the ENTIRE cutscene before the battle.
Let's be honest. With the time needed to model the bat mobile, they wanted to put the thing in the game long enough to justify the time taken to model, retop, texture, rig, and code the thing.

As much as I love Dragon Age: Origins, I always cringe when I get to The Fade. You know you've REALLY screwed up when the community creates a mod specifically to let players skip an entire level of your game.
The Fade and the abandoned building in Denerim (with 800 blood mages and Qunari guards everywhere) are the only reasons I'm putting off my 78th play through of that game.
I didn't mind Xen too much. I thought for sure when you guys mentioned Half Life, it would have been either the part where you're supposed to sneak past those bladed tentacle monsters (assuming you played the tutorial and remember you can crouch to sneak when you're half way through the game, given this is the only place you actually need to sneak), or the room where any wrong move, stray bullet, or wandering enemy causes a warehouse full of explosives to go off around you.
I did not realise everyone loathed the Stealth Ship section on ACBF, I got through that in one go. However, absolutely wanted to gnaw my arm off with the first stealth mission infiltrating the Assassin's HQ. That was a pain.
Anthony You are sent to the ends of this large dock area. Once you got there infinitely respawning enemies would show up after a cutscene and you had to escape the docks. Problem 1: Infinitely Respawning Enemies Problem 2: Infinitely Respawning Tough Enemies Problem 3: Infinitely Respawning Tough Enemies with REALLY good aim. Problem 4: Running out of Ammo Problem 5: Can't go into the water because you're slow and there may or may not have been some kind of shark thing in there Problem 6: No vehicles that would normally be everywhere that would allow you to make a hasty escape Problem 7: Getting stunlocked by enemy fire Conclusion: You've gotta wade through an area flooded with tough enemies that have good aim and hope that you're... what was it 10 hits? Would be enough to let you run from one end of the rickety and narrow passage docks to the other without dying.
Anthony Oh yeah. That game wasn't entirely well designed. They wanted to ride in on the popularity of Grand Theft Auto which led them to switch from a Platformer to a Platformer 3rd person shooter. You ended up literally going from houses with straw roofs and scavenging ancient relics in Jak 1, to suddenly a Dystopia Future where a COMPLETELY new enemy came out of nowhere. Flying cars are everywhere, there are now guns, as well as some kind of time travel shenanigans. That said for making such a dramatic jump in genres, they didn't botch it. The game turned out to be mostly well made and it got popular.
I loved the swoop races in KOTOR! It's not like the first one was very hard or anything, and none of the others were necessary. I'd hardly say it even ruined the game for someone who hated it.
You really did not need to even try with that level, on your first run you could intentionally miss every single speed booster and still win that first "heat." Then the next runs were gauged to that first performance.
Yes, on my second playthrough of the game, I made the mistake of putting down a great time on my first run, and then I couldn't beat it on my second run.
On that note, am I the only one who had no problems whatsoever with the ship stealth stuff, in Black Flag? I did it on my first try and actually found it (mildly) interesting.
yes comparable to the Half-Life ending...I guess a lot of games from those times felt the need to integrate some kind of platforming sequence in to it to nostalgically remind us of our Mario days or something...I don't think we will ever manage to understand the logic behind that.

What about the Water Temple in specifically the N64 release of Ocarina of Time? Where you'd have to pause every 5 seconds to switch boots? Made me wanna pull my hair out.
I found it so easy to forget where all the rooms were and lead to in that area. I seem to remember I searching forever to find the door I had to unlock.
Levels like that are why I couldn't make it through breath of the wild. There were some really frustrating puzzles that required you to Google stuff every few minutes if you didn't want to spend hours trying to figure them out and when a game does that to me it feels more like work than fun and I don't have the patience for it.
I kind of liked the Arkham Knight Tank Battle. Though I had my headphones in blairing out the guitar riff from "Freebird" like from Kingsman. It made it way cooler.

You actually beat the game? I've only ever seen it done on speedruns and shit. I do not remember beating that level in the game back in the day. I could get through the underwater bomb disposal stage in TMNT with relative ease, but the jet bike sections in Battletoads still kick my ass to this day.
After replaying the game on Rare Replay with the ability to save, rewind, and whatnot... That bike level that always seemed the worst when I was a kid was nothing once I got to experience the ... unicycle? whatever it was level toward the end. I've never experienced such microprecision needed in a game ever. Just.. soooo hard. I now know the only reason the jet bike level is held so highly is because so few actually made it to the ... thing level.
same here, loved the xen stage. That said I think I can get where they're coming from. What was almost a turn off for me was the change in physics, jumps are more floaty, there's a (small) chance you could slip off the platform (with a couple being over bottomless pits), and the bosses take a shit ton of damage with no clear indicator if you're actually hurting it. But once I adapted to the physics and eventually realized the bosses just take a lot of punishment I ended up enjoying xen.
On a rail, Power up, and Apprehension were kinda low points for me. And residue processing was kinda forgettable. For some reason I like office complex.
They were like the longest three chapters back to back. I would have preferred just letting the marines come down and get me than going through that terrible railway station

Suggestion: 4th wall Immersion breaking mechanics suggested game: most mmos, being free-to-play no less. People flood the server to play, fight wars against whatever armies of evil, and infinitely respawn after death, so why the hell we did not win the wars eons ago?
How about Top X puzzles that didn't need to be as complex as they were. Looking at Tales of Symphonia and the elven forest puzzle. How about instead of summoning fish to push a fruit through the water, we get in the knee deep water and just pick the fruit up?
Aaron Pastor if it was more difficult you would have a point but it is actually really hard to fail hard enough to straight up lose that section. Now the hull integrity achievement however was a true bitch and a half to do I'll give you that.
No Blighttown from Dark Souls?! It constantly lags, the whole place is a giant maze, and once you get to the bottom it's a poison filled bog. I love Dark Souls, but I will always hate that level.
Blighttown has good atmosphere, the lag isn't that bad, not too complicated and good enemies. The poison bog is easy because you just roll through it and eat purple moss on the other side. git gud

The Framerate was insufferable on that part, keep in mind that I played on 360. Also the layout was very confusing, but getting out of Blighttown was one of most rewarding experiences ever xD
Blightown is really not that bad; great atmosphere, albeit a bit laggy. Dark Souls 3's Farron keep on the other hand... it's just a generic swamp area with annoying enemies that takes forever to go through in it's entirety because you can't run and everything looks the fucking same.

On a rail is one of those segments that you can blaze trough if you know what you are doing. But yes if you play it normally it drags on quite a bit. When I first played the game I felt like most of the game was this level.
Mmm, I'm not sure but I think they do mostly xbox games. Sure other consoles can get a mention (like in this ep) but their exclusive games will never get on a list.

I found the ship stealth boring tbh... compared to the rest of the game it feels very out of place... No hiding in bushes or blazing cannons, just... slowly floating around towers and following a boat... then stalking some guy. Not all that interesting imo lol
It had potential. The atmosphere of a Mississippi delta-like swamp was awesome. BUT, the poor design choices on the technical end made it really hard to love. Too many cheap fails, and way too "hard" to 100% it.
These guys have a history of proving "impossible controls" by just.. leaving the clearly marked path and ramping hills. the racing level in Mafia is challenging, but not sloppy. I get the feeling these guys are just journalists who work for a game mag, not gamers.
I have played that level and I can approve that people's complaints are right about the controls. I've had some experience for racing games but the controls felt so slippery and even the slightest nudge could send you off course.
The Tutorial of Skyrim. Unoike Oblivion, you can't just save right before leaving to get a new character. If you want to change anything, you have to spend an hour playing the tutorial. Every. Single. Time.
That's weird. For me, even with the v1.0 build on the Xbox 360, the game auto saved for me just right as I got off the cart. (note: I had every option to auto-save turned on)

Bioshock Infinite doesn't really count, since you have no need to protect Elizabeth at all- game tells you she can look after herself at the start and it means it, plus she's very good at keeping up with you so you hardly have to wait around for her to catch up.

Swoop Racing wasn't that bad. The points of comparison, mind you, are playing Pazaak or hunting on Tatooine, which are the other good places to get money.
Nathan Brown Also the game literally let's you win on its own, you are supposed to do the race 2 or 3 times, on the last try the vehicle gets such a massive boost its the easiest part of the game. Badly researched.
I normally just try my best to do badly on the first race and then just go all out on the second one, because the other team normally only does a second or so better than you.

I've seen a lot of "Bad level" Videos, but you guys should do a "7 final levels that knocked it out of the park"! (Not meaning final boss battles, but actual full levels)
I didn't find it all that difficult, just really, really boring. I stopped playing the game right after finishing the level and never continued playing the rest of the game.
Still, I always found him pretty bad. My party consisted almost entirely of Bastila and HK-47 or Canderous. I only had Zaalbar in my party when I did his quest.
i beat the Charlestown ship stealth mission today, and you weren't kidding. I came very close to throwing my controller at things, but fortunately it lasted just long enough for me to finish, and never want to do again :D

I actually like the Xen chapters precisely because they bring something new and different to the proverbial "table." The low gravity combined with the Long Jump Module can be kinda fun.

Go back and play the Water Temple. I mean it, pick up OoT and play it again. See how long it takes you to go through it and then ask yourself, "Was younger me just not as good at puzzles?" That temple gave us the Dark Link fight, the longshot, and Freaky Encounters of the Fish Kind, AKA fish Waifu Ruto (ok, that last one was a little weird). Once you know what you're doing, it's actually a fun temple. It does not deserve the hate that it gets. My point is that with this list, even if you know what you're supposed to do, playing these levels isn't fun. Water Temple is still a Zelda dungeon, albeit a long and kind of confusing one.
I did recently, and its still pretty confusing. it's overly complex and there is a lot of repeating going on. I won't say its bad but challenging it is !

Its gonna take forever for the developers of Black Mesa to remake Xen, its ugly as hell in hl1 but who knows how fantastic it will look once its done. A lot of highly detailed alien foliage, floating debris all around in random directions, aurora lights everywhere. Perhaps better platforming puzzles and improved or replaced levels.

For Mafia race it was more of a Dark Souls experience. I have the release, pre patched version of this game and I can complete this race on a first try almost always. It stopped me for a week when I first played it but when you know the track and how to turn and throw off other drivers it's pretty easy. Just slow down before the turning and you'll be ok. Also, Xen bit in Half-Life was awesome.

I just played through that mission a few weeks ago. I found it a little irksome, but I was really surprised to hear about how it was pretty much universally hated by the internet. It took me 2-3 attempts and I never died.
The shit Vice City put you through was much worse IMO. Combined with the fact that the game takes away all your shit and plenty of your money each death (And there were a LOT of unavoidable deaths) made that game much worse than it needed to be.
Those remote control helicopter missions are extremely frustrating too.
I gave up on the level where you have to get that transport helecopter to lift something. I can't remember. The train wasn't too hard for me.

GetToHellOut I'm playing them both on my PS2 right now. I just played SA and, nope, I still have all my weapons after dying. I think there might be a cheat code enabled or they just don't punish you for deaths for the first few missions. Maybe the game's taking some of my ammo instead?

The very first stage in Driver. You have to do an obstacle course absolutely perfect to get access to a game that doesn't need 10% of it.

Basically, they spend so much time playing and replaying sections while testing and developing that their sense of difficulty gets skewed.

I was going to comment on the asteroid cannon section if no one else did! Totally agree - there were a couple of tries on my first playthrough where I almost gave up on the game altogether. So glad I perservered though!

Valve literally makes more money by doing nothing than they do by making games. Valve makes roughly 700 million a year through Steam. If they released HL3, they'd have to sell roughly 12 million units to make that much back.

Asteroids in "Dead Space". Wonderful game overall, Dead Space. But what was basically as Asteroids arcade mini-game nearly ruined the game.
Thankfully that was the only part like that.
Except when they did it again but with a big tentacle monster throwing explosive barrels at you.

+Wicked Witch Of The West in the directors cut they added some stealth and hacking, most notably hacking. Like when you fight namir, there is a second floor with a vent that leads to a room with a camera and a terminal to hack which if done correctly spawns robots to fight him. With Barrett there is something similar with turrets, you can technically stealth both of these.

Battles themselves weren't that bad per se (for what general design of the game allowed in terms of combat), the problem is the lack of "chose your approach" thing for those who value it in a Deus Ex game.

Call me weird but I actually enjoyed the speeder levels of Knights of the old republic, after the first go I understood the controls and blasted past it no problem.
Even back when the game first released (when I was a teen) the swoop races were easy. Whoever put it on the list is just terrible at video games.

A level where you have to actually observe the area and decide the proper method of progression and then handle it with some care will always suck for the casual peasants. Maybe they should go play some Madden instead.

You forgot Uncharted: Drake's Fortune---- the Jet Ski level "Heading Up River"... Trying to maneuver the jet ski up cascades and dodging bullets and exploding barrels with Elena's shoddy shooting skills.
Also Kingdom Hearts 1: The Riku battle. The only way to survive was to continually glide around the level, landing to heal and do one attack before gliding again. Every time you lost, you had to watch the ENTIRE cutscene before the battle.

Kylee Smalley There's a difference between making a clear reference and taking how someone else describes something, warping it around a bit, and using it for your own video. Granted, it could've just been coincidence, but I just thought it was odd is all.

As much as I love Dragon Age: Origins, I always cringe when I get to The Fade. You know you've REALLY screwed up when the community creates a mod specifically to let players skip an entire level of your game.

The Fade and the abandoned building in Denerim (with 800 blood mages and Qunari guards everywhere) are the only reasons I'm putting off my 78th play through of that game.
the fade was definitely obnoxious...especially if you weren't a mage yourself and had to send either wynn or morrigan in.
I think everyone's talking about the fade section in the Circle Tower where a Sloth demon puts you to sleep and you enter it no matter what class.
I didn't mind Xen too much. I thought for sure when you guys mentioned Half Life, it would have been either the part where you're supposed to sneak past those bladed tentacle monsters (assuming you played the tutorial and remember you can crouch to sneak when you're half way through the game, given this is the only place you actually need to sneak), or the room where any wrong move, stray bullet, or wandering enemy causes a warehouse full of explosives to go off around you.
I did not realise everyone loathed the Stealth Ship section on ACBF, I got through that in one go. However, absolutely wanted to gnaw my arm off with the first stealth mission infiltrating the Assassin's HQ. That was a pain.

Anthony You are sent to the ends of this large dock area. Once you got there infinitely respawning enemies would show up after a cutscene and you had to escape the docks.

Problem 5: Can't go into the water because you're slow and there may or may not have been some kind of shark thing in there

Problem 7: Getting stunlocked by enemy fire
Conclusion: You've gotta wade through an area flooded with tough enemies that have good aim and hope that you're... what was it 10 hits? Would be enough to let you run from one end of the rickety and narrow passage docks to the other without dying.

Anthony Oh yeah. That game wasn't entirely well designed. They wanted to ride in on the popularity of Grand Theft Auto which led them to switch from a Platformer to a Platformer 3rd person shooter.
You ended up literally going from houses with straw roofs and scavenging ancient relics in Jak 1, to suddenly a Dystopia Future where a COMPLETELY new enemy came out of nowhere. Flying cars are everywhere, there are now guns, as well as some kind of time travel shenanigans.
That said for making such a dramatic jump in genres, they didn't botch it. The game turned out to be mostly well made and it got popular.
I loved the swoop races in KOTOR! It's not like the first one was very hard or anything, and none of the others were necessary. I'd hardly say it even ruined the game for someone who hated it.
You really did not need to even try with that level, on your first run you could intentionally miss every single speed booster and still win that first "heat." Then the next runs were gauged to that first performance.
Yes, on my second playthrough of the game, I made the mistake of putting down a great time on my first run, and then I couldn't beat it on my second run.

I found it so easy to forget where all the rooms were and lead to in that area. I seem to remember I searching forever to find the door I had to unlock.
Levels like that are why I couldn't make it through breath of the wild. There were some really frustrating puzzles that required you to Google stuff every few minutes if you didn't want to spend hours trying to figure them out and when a game does that to me it feels more like work than fun and I don't have the patience for it.
It was re-released on GameCube, but the water temple is just as annoying.
I kind of liked the Arkham Knight Tank Battle. Though I had my headphones in blairing out the guitar riff from "Freebird" like from Kingsman. It made it way cooler.

You actually beat the game? I've only ever seen it done on speedruns and shit. I do not remember beating that level in the game back in the day. I could get through the underwater bomb disposal stage in TMNT with relative ease, but the jet bike sections in Battletoads still kick my ass to this day.
After replaying the game on Rare Replay with the ability to save, rewind, and whatnot... That bike level that always seemed the worst when I was a kid was nothing once I got to experience the ... unicycle? whatever it was level toward the end. I've never experienced such microprecision needed in a game ever. Just.. soooo hard. I now know the only reason the jet bike level is held so highly is because so few actually made it to the ... thing level.

same here, loved the xen stage. That said I think I can get where they're coming from. What was almost a turn off for me was the change in physics, jumps are more floaty, there's a (small) chance you could slip off the platform (with a couple being over bottomless pits), and the bosses take a shit ton of damage with no clear indicator if you're actually hurting it. But once I adapted to the physics and eventually realized the bosses just take a lot of punishment I ended up enjoying xen.
On a rail, Power up, and Apprehension were kinda low points for me. And residue processing was kinda forgettable. For some reason I like office complex.
They were like the longest three chapters back to back. I would have preferred just letting the marines come down and get me than going through that terrible railway station

suggested game: most mmos, being free-to-play no less. People flood the server to play, fight wars against whatever armies of evil, and infinitely respawn after death, so why the hell we did not win the wars eons ago?
How about Top X puzzles that didn't need to be as complex as they were.
Looking at Tales of Symphonia and the elven forest puzzle. How about instead of summoning fish to push a fruit through the water, we get in the knee deep water and just pick the fruit up?

How about the Asteroid space gun level in Dead Space. That was completely horrid.
Aaron Pastor if it was more difficult you would have a point but it is actually really hard to fail hard enough to straight up lose that section.
Now the hull integrity achievement however was a true bitch and a half to do I'll give you that.
No Blighttown from Dark Souls?! It constantly lags, the whole place is a giant maze, and once you get to the bottom it's a poison filled bog. I love Dark Souls, but I will always hate that level.
Blighttown has good atmosphere, the lag isn't that bad, not too complicated and good enemies. The poison bog is easy because you just roll through it and eat purple moss on the other side. git gud
+Lori I've gotten the "Dark Soul" achievement -_- I just hate the lag and confusing maze if you don't know where your going, although the poison bog is better than the rest of it.
The Framerate was insufferable on that part, keep in mind that I played on 360. Also the layout was very confusing, but getting out of Blighttown was one of most rewarding experiences ever xD
Blightown is really not that bad; great atmosphere, albeit a bit laggy. Dark Souls 3's Farron keep on the other hand... it's just a generic swamp area with annoying enemies that takes forever to go through in it's entirety because you can't run and everything looks the fucking same.
The thing is the second half of the game is what nearly ruined it. Because of after anor londo The game went from a 10 to an 8

On a rail is one of those segments that you can blaze trough if you know what you are doing. But yes if you play it normally it drags on quite a bit. When I first played the game I felt like most of the game was this level.

I liked the turrets. The only issue I had was the random ones triggering all the time while backtracking to places you'd already been before.

I had no problem with the race in Mafia or the ship stealth in Black Flag, I liked then. I loved Xen too.

I found the ship stealth boring tbh... compared to the rest of the game it feels very out of place... No hiding in bushes or blazing cannons, just... slowly floating around towers and following a boat... then stalking some guy. Not all that interesting imo lol

It had potential. The atmosphere of a Mississippi delta-like swamp was awesome. BUT, the poor design choices on the technical end made it really hard to love. Too many cheap fails, and way too "hard" to 100% it.
These guys have a history of proving "impossible controls" by just.. leaving the clearly marked path and ramping hills. the racing level in Mafia is challenging, but not sloppy. I get the feeling these guys are just journalists who work for a game mag, not gamers.

I have played that level and I can approve that people's complaints are right about the controls. I've had some experience for racing games but the controls felt so slippery and even the slightest nudge could send you off course.

The Tutorial of Skyrim. Unoike Oblivion, you can't just save right before leaving to get a new character. If you want to change anything, you have to spend an hour playing the tutorial. Every. Single. Time.

Only reason I didn't like Xen was that the game kept glitching out on me there, wouldn't let me advance after beating the 1st boss.

I don't think that counts as an escort mission because you don't have to protect her.
Bioshock Infinite doesn't really count, since you have no need to protect Elizabeth at all- game tells you she can look after herself at the start and it means it, plus she's very good at keeping up with you so you hardly have to wait around for her to catch up.
In that game, Elizabeth is escorting _you_
Jedi Academy has the best escort mission in all of gaming. You don't escort the guy as much as he escorts you.
To the game writers, it's an escort mission. To we gamers, it's a "Stop standing in the worst place imaginable unless you *want* to die!" simulator.
Half Life on Xen, it's one of the best part of the game

Swoop Racing wasn't that bad. The points of comparison, mind you, are playing Pazaak or hunting on Tatooine, which are the other good places to get money.
Nathan Brown Also the game literally let's you win on its own, you are supposed to do the race 2 or 3 times, on the last try the vehicle gets such a massive boost its the easiest part of the game. Badly researched.
I normally just try my best to do badly on the first race and then just go all out on the second one, because the other team normally only does a second or so better than you.

You die if you go all out in the first one and then fuck up the other two. That is the only fathomable way to lose it.

The Taris one sucked because it was only there for the plot and you had to do it twice. I think Swoop Racing was improved in KotOR II though.

Go back and play the Water Temple. I mean it, pick up OoT and play it again. See how long it takes you to go through it and then ask yourself, "Was younger me just not as good at puzzles?"
That temple gave us the Dark Link fight, the longshot, and Freaky Encounters of the Fish Kind, AKA fish Waifu Ruto (ok, that last one was a little weird). Once you know what you're doing, it's actually a fun temple. It does not deserve the hate that it gets.
My point is that with this list, even if you know what you're supposed to do, playing these levels isn't fun. Water Temple is still a Zelda dungeon, albeit a long and kind of confusing one.
I did recently, and its still pretty confusing. it's overly complex and there is a lot of repeating going on. I won't say its bad but challenging it is !

I think the main reason I liked it was because I was waiting for the long jump module the entire game since the tutorial showed it off.

Its gonna take forever for the developers of Black Mesa to remake Xen, its ugly as hell in hl1 but who knows how fantastic it will look once its done. A lot of highly detailed alien foliage, floating debris all around in random directions, aurora lights everywhere. Perhaps better platforming puzzles and improved or replaced levels.

For Mafia race it was more of a Dark Souls experience. I have the release, pre patched version of this game and I can complete this race on a first try almost always. It stopped me for a week when I first played it but when you know the track and how to turn and throw off other drivers it's pretty easy. Just slow down before the turning and you'll be ok.
Also, Xen bit in Half-Life was awesome.
I was disappointed not to be able to use my hard won racing skills any further. A speedway race would have been cool.

It's really not that difficult. You just have to be careful to not get too close to the enemy ship. It's totally doable.
