Ive seen a few companies offer the color laminated exterior color only on the single hung. Seems worth the downgrade in convenience to go with single if the said superior laminated vs painted color is avail on it, Thoughts?

That could definitely be a good call, as long as the top sash not operating doesn’t bother you. Thanks for this question, it’s a great one to think about!

In short, double and single hung windows have sashes that are designed to simply move up and down. Awning windows are hinged at the top and can be opened outward from the bottom of the unit.

Does the double hung window satisfy emergency egress requirements?

    • @daileymanufacturing7811

They can. However, it is important to do some research as only specific brands of double hung windows meet egress standards.

Good grief Charlie Brown. What have they done to single hung windows. Just so people know, real single hung windows are considered much better than double hung - not the ones shown here, but the ones from the 1940s etc. Those ones are works of art and perform at least as good or better than the top windows made today (not the ones shown here). Go look at the ones restored and made new for homes in England or Canada and be amazed. Super expensive unfortunately but simply stunning workmanship. These plastic things are all wrong.

Quoting Charles M. Shultz, The doctor is IN. 5 cents. Windows of the past were single panes and offered no thermal barrier to speak of. Add to that the frost and ice that built up on the inside in cold climates like the Canada you quote and what do you get? Yes, a watery mess. especially when it melted into the wood frames causing rot. Progress is good, now get off your Nokia 9000 Communicator and throw another log on the fire.

@@KenDebono ...take a look at the restored windows from the UK. It is not the glass (although they can put in double or triple panes but that is not important) is the wood frame and box that counts the most. They last a 100 years whereas 28 percent (according to Matt Rissenger - look him up) of new fiberglass windows are dead on arrival with pin hole leaks in the corners. Wood frame is by far the best as long as they don't use fake wood or finger jointed cheap wood.
