      I have one question about the Siege of Themyscira - how the hell does a (presumably walled) city under siege get their hands on bears? Did they just happen to have a zoo? Was their some rich eccentric who just happened to have some pet bears in their mansion? Did the city garrison have trained bears (a la Wojtek)?
      This is going to keep me up all night.

    • @MetalHeadViking
      @MetalHeadViking 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Well Themyscira was a hellenic city at the time. And in hellenic culture they used to use animals for entertainment sometimes. So it is possible that the bears had some keeper who had some business with useing bears as entertainment, and that he would then willingly or forcefully turn in his exotic animals over to the defence of the city against the romans.

    That story about the raven was hilarious. And the one about Horme legitimately made me tear up. We are separated from Arrianus by 2000 years. He could not have conceived of us today and it's hard to imagine what the world was like back then. If we met this guy today, we could barely communicate with him even with the help of experts, let alone find much common ground on a personal level, yet our love for a dog transcends time and it is something that everyone instantly understands.

    For those who may or may not want the original names, here they are, our beloved Historia Civilis dude named them in the same order that appears in the treatise, that makes it easier for all of you to understand!
    “Give the hounds short names, so as to be able to call to them easily. The following are the right sort: Psyche, Thymus, Porpax, Styrax, Lonchê, Lochus, Phrura, Phylax, Taxis, Xiphon, Phonax, Phlegon, Alcê, Teuchon, Hyleus, Medas, Porthon, Sperchon, Orgê, Bremon, Hybris, Thallon, Rhomê, Antheus, Hebe, Getheus, Chara, Leusson, Augo, Polys, Bia, Stichon, Spudê, Bryas, Oenas, Sterrus, Craugê, Caenon, Tyrbas, Sthenon, Aether, Actis, Aechmê, Noes, Gnomê, Stibon, Hormê.”

    The type of man who writes hunting manuals with his dog is intelligent, witty, and more likely to have detailed accounts of his life. The type of man who throws bears into a tunnel is rugged, makes his own moonshine, and probably cant spell his own name. So unfortunately we dont have well written accounts of bears in tunnels

      Psyche is the greek word for Soul. Well, the rest are pretty loosely translated so it's difficult to translate them back to Greek. The funny thing is that Xenophon is actually a pretty serious and importand historian. He wrote of the rest of the Peloponnese war after Thucydides died in a pretty biased way ( Even though he was an Athenian, he loved Sparta ). The dude propably got so bored in the farm that was gifted to him by the Spartans that started writing about Puppy names and Horse riding lol.

    I’m sure the only reason why Appian spent so little time on the Tunnel Bears and Tunnel Bees is because they were actually very effective and he didn’t want others to know how effective it was at thwarting his sappers, lest more towns try that as a defense

    As a dog person, I quite love Horme and Arrian's story.

    There's something really humanising about Arrian's account of Horme. He may have lived nearly 2000 years ago in a society drastically different to today, but it's reassuring to know that even back in those times people loved their strongboys the way we do now.

      Horme sounded just like my grey that followed me around the house, never leaving arms reach. I never kissed her on the mouth, though.

    Bears and bees were sacred animals associated to Artemis, one of the chief Goddesses of the Amazons. Maybe there's some symbolism involved in this episode.
