I have had my T991 six years. I have played it regularly, finally settling on "rubber" VanDoren V16 T7 and T8 mp and VDoren JaZZ #3 reeds. Great intonation, as he says, and it is "even" and responsive across the entire range. It allows a clear, focused sound. Of course, a lot depends on set up and player, but this horn should certainly be auditioned with Selmer (Paris) and others. In comparison to many saxes, the Yani effectively expresses, rather than suppressing, sound. Craftmanship!
I play theT991 in big band. Set up is stock neck, Vandoren T8 Ebonite, JaZZ #3. Can't remember the name of the lig - I'm old. It has a tremendous dynamic range, including full out LOUD when you need it. Bought it new around '04. I also play it in a huge wind ensemble, same set up, but have to be careful not to play too loudly. This set up has balls, man. I love to solo on it as well.
I've gone through a few Selmers, not just tenor, but also on alto and bari, I'm not a huge fan of them. My favorites have been Cannonball, Yani, and Yamaha. At this point, it almost seems like Selmer is running on hype. When I was talking to a sax instructor about them, he said that you sometimes can't trust what people say, you have to go through a lot of options before you find what's really right for you.
To offer you the best information and sound demo - Phil is better at explaining the ins and out of the saxophone/brand where as Simon is a more accomplished player. Not to confusing for you I hope! Nothing suspicious going on, just an insight into the T901...
How good is this horn at volume production? because the biggest problem i have with my current sax is when i need it to be really loud for soloing over a full big band it just can't get there.
If you were blindfolded and play tested every sax in sax.co.uk , and you searched for the perfect tenor and hoped it would be the holeygrale mk6 i bet you would be surprised what you bought, seeing is beliving listening is a difrent thing
Is it true that Yani's lack a certain personality or have perhaps sacrificed that quality in pursuit of technical achievement when it comes to constructing a solid sax?
Yeah so Yani and Yamaha should just close their doors since their horns are so terrible and no one plays them. Everyone should just play a Selmer or an old Conn because if you don't you won't have a good sound. Is that what you are saying because that would be moronic if you are.....

I've owned a t901 for about 5 years now and I absolutely love it. Highly recommend for easy bright tone
So impressed I bought one of the last. My first for 45 years. I'm chuffed to bits with it. Bronze neck comes next.
So would I! For saxophonists... this place looks like heaven on earth!

The best sax ever!!!!

As a clarinet player, selmer bass clarinets arent half bad. Nothing special, but not to terrible. My '64 bueschner outclasses them all though
It's open and loud and good intonation, but I feel like the Selmers have more character. Even the new ones.
Great Sound!!
I would sell my soul to own a place like this.....

Just wondering if a Ruyon 22 mouthpiece would fit well with this sax...?

This sax is considered intermediate or professional?
Pro for sure Yanigisawa only manufacturers professional instruments.

Not first but 30th
This model isn't available anymore. Wonder how old it is...lacquered? BAD!! :)
Does anyone know how this compares to the yamaha yts-65?
No, that would be describing Yamaha in my opinion. Yani's are creamy and soulful in the right hands, and they can roar with the right mouthpiece.
The reason, the price.........
the selmer is alot better
Not. For. Sale.

I'm hoping there was a healthy dose of exaggeration in that :-)
need to practice more
