  • You need an instantly cycled fish tank to quarantine a new fish or to put a fish into that isn't looking too good. Your new fish needs a place to go immediately and that sick looking fish needs a place to go before he gets the rest of his tank mates sick. So you need a solution right now. What do you do?
In this video I share how I get a tank, small or large, instantly ready and "fully cycled", all in a couple of minutes, ready for fish to be added.
Take a look and share your thoughts and tips in the comments below. How do you get a new tank up and running fast? Be part of the "Convo Gang" and talk about it below. Remember, on this channel, "We ALL LEARN FROM EACH OTHER!"
If you like the content of my channel, and haven't already done so, how about hitting that sub button and bell? Your support is noticed and greatly appreciated!

Good stuff Ben. I like to keep sponge filters in my tanks in addition to the primary filtration. Mainly to have cycled filters on hand. It’s also nice to have the added filtration in the tanks. I have one that’s rated for 60 gallons I paid $8.00 for. I took that and some cycled rocks and did exactly what you did with a 20 long. I have a naughty Venustus doing some jail time in it right now. Once my new 125 is cycled, he’ll go in there.

With 34 tanks, salt and fresh, there isn’t any other kind. Always down to help friends who need BB so they can get started. Important to keep in mind that BB needs time to grow to accommodate increasing stock levels. Cking parameters is still important during this period. Great vid keeping it simple Ben.

Indeed a great way to cycle your tank faster. Before setting up a new tank, I floated some filtermaterial for a few weeks in an established tank. After setting up the new tank I, was surprised to see some tiny movements within a few days. Now I have a new generation of Rainbowfish :-)
I gues they spawned into the floating filtermaterial. Not the plan for the new tank, but nature takes its own course.

Ben I did something very similar just a few weeks ago to quarantine some fish I bought on Aqua-Bid......no pet shops in my very rural area.
Filled a 10 gallon tank, put some used media on the tank floor in a corner of the tank, put an old style corner sponge filter on top of the media, put in a preset heater and an airstone and waited till the fish came.....worked out just fine.

Ben I really like this video! I'm like you, I keep materials stored out of sight in functioning aquariums, so when I need to start another tank, I have the bacteria in sponge filter material from several tanks. I either use it in filters that take the cylinder sponges or I can stuff them into an HOB. I don't necessarily use the HOB for mechanical filtration, but it is great for dealing with ammonia.

My 65 has canister and a hang on back. My 55 has two hang on backs each capable of running it all by themselves and the filter sponge. Fish are growing like weeds and active.

Great advice as usual. Along the same line, I have also found that taking the mechanical filtration media (sponge or floss) from an established tank and squeezing some of the "dirty water" actually transplant beneficial bacteria to the new environment. I do not have any controlled data to support this practice but anecdotally it has worked for me in a pinch. Stay safe my friend.

I use the biohome ultimate in all my filters, great media. I use eheim 2217s and the new fluval 407s great filters. you can get more media in the eheims but more water flow from the fluvals. I wish fluval would make a filter where you could get more media in the baskets.

I'm in a predicament and so is my fish 😪 I've asked the question to so many in the past 2 days and nothing! I have a tank with ammonia and very high nitrate and a really poorly fish that tried to jump out. My fault I'm devastated, so i made the mistake in panick, of putting her in a bucket of clean water with seachem prime and stability and air stone it's all I have and no pennies... am I doing more harm?? I can't bare to think my fissy is struggling because I messed up. I've done a 50% water change in the tank and added seachem prime and stability, the ammonia has dropped a little, but nitrate is real high which is apparently why she is sick. Jumping out for air, sluggish on the bottom and slight red veins in her tail. I don't have the means for medication what do I do?? Can you help with any further advice until I can get what I need for her. I've had her for 3 years I don't want to lose her by not knowing what's right for her now🙏♡

Can you just place the media in the tank? For instance if I'm trying to cycle a 55 gal with a HOB. the media I borrowed from another tank came out of a canister. So very large sponges and ceramic rings. I've placed the sponges directly in the tank as well as the rings. I didn't put anything in my filter. I did upgrade the stock carbon cartridges with more sponges. Will this help cycle my tank? Or do I have to place media In the filter? I'm also using fritz 7. . .

  • @-8_8-
    @-8_8- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great ideas and as suggested, will cycle the tank immediately. Bacteria, which seems magical in that we don't add it, and it is the secret ingredient, is actually one of the harder things that we keep. It just so happens that our set ups are great habitats.
Here's the however- when you take a thriving colony from a tank, you are putting your minions into a tank devoid of food. All other things being equal, you will experience a die off of bacteria if there's no waste to process. Think napoleon in moscow. All I'm saying is do something to keep it fed. Otherwise in 3 months when you get a sick fish, you are putting them in a fresh tank, not a cycled tank. This is why I use all nice dirty tank water to set up. It gives a slight breathing room for the bacteria while I figure out how to feed the small tank. If my sump weren't so efficient, I'd be able to just do reverse water changes and put ammonia ridden water into my otherwise empty hospital. But alas, never any ammonia, never any nitrite. I still haven't really figured this out. For now, I trade the filter media before I move a fish. The media for my 5 gallon is not noticeable to my 120 gallon. Don't do this if the tank has been medicated recently, as results may change.

Seachem Stability is better than relying on rocks/sponges for beneficial bacteria!! tell me what you think??

I believe that products like Stability, Fritz Turbo, Tim’s etc are good but still require time to really establish. Fish added immediately to a new tank using those products, when I’ve used them, have shown signs of stress for a week or so before starting to behave normally. Whereas I saw no signs of stress using the methods described in the video.

@@BenOchart wow Ben ! Thanks for the msg.. I have cycled my tank in the past using Prime n Stability alone without any visible stress... Just have to increase the water changes to keep the Ammonia levels down for a week or so.. Thanks again for the msg.. Love your show.. Love watching the cichlids and coffee hour long entertainment you offer us all! Stay safe friend 😷😷😷

This is why it's a really good idea to over filter your tank that way you always have bacteria to use and plenty of it or you could even take an entire filter and put it on the new tank that you're setting up and it will be packed with beneficial bacteria.

ANYONE who is willing to help and do a good deed...I'm actually in my OWN situation here maybe you could help🤷🏼‍♂️ I just got another 60 gallon that's probably NEVER been cleaned from a friend that moved..... When he gave me the canister filter ( Cascade 1,000 ) he DIDN'T have Bio?? Only Carbon bag and sponge full of mulm BAAD.... This will be my Cichlid tank my other is a 60 gallon community tank... Buut, now I have all his substrate with MTS snails everywhere and @10-20 Convict fry in the tank it's setup and running and the water conditions are ACTUALLY dead on already.... Now two of my friends still say BC be didn't clean anything for probably 6 months or more... To start EVERYTHING over throw vinegar in there cycle it etc.... Anny thoughts on this if it was yours and your ready to get the Cichlids in there even though I've added 3 different bio and Lava Rock in the canister etc.... Would you recycle it all?

I mean all this is great, IF you have a tank that’s already set up..

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

...or know somebody that has or have a good relationship with your local fish store so they are willing to pull some media from as established tank for you.

@@BenOchart that’s a good point too, around where I live we don’t have any local stores unfortunately other than petco. Makes me wonder if any one sells stuff like this online or if it’s even possible too, it would help someone like me out a ton because I have no idea how to set up a tank other than dump in some quick start and wait a month for it to be some what established. Good advice though
