You are absolutely correct that most fish stores and/or pet stores do not talk to people about how important it is to cycle the tank first and they should sell some filter media or just give some already cycled filter media to people setting up new tanks. That’s a really great idea and so simple to do!!

I love using sponge filters. I've got 6 of them and every one of them are in aquariums, regardless they're running or not. Also, using *real* plants in the aquarium helps keep the water quality good for your fish. 😊

Great information Jason, as always! I like the sponge method as we've discussed before and agree that there should be some kind of way stores and vendors sold cycled sponges. When I had a bunch of tanks and established cycles in my water, starting a new tank was easy. Having to have started all over from scratch ... I've definitely learned some things setting up tanks. I'm sorta glad I had to go through it and overcome some of the challenges when starting a tank from empty to "cycled" and thriving!

For a new tank would you need to dechlorinate it first before putting in the Fritz 7? Like using Seachem Prime and then put the Fritz 7 afterwards. Also, how long would you wait before putting in the Fritz 7 after adding the dechlorinator? Thanks!!

My experience. I took a sponge filter that was in my 125 for 2 months. Put it in a tank with a betta. Tested every day and had moderate amounts of ammonia and nitrite every day. On the 4th day it went to 0. Wasn't instant at least for me but better than 6 to 8 weeks.

Can you clarify for me...I add the product to my filter (so probably .25oz due to the size of my tank) and then just test with my API Freshwater Master Test kit? Add Prime as needed? And I assume I don't clean the gravel during the cycling because it needs the ammonia to feed off of?

Great video. I think, though, that, since this video was made, some of the other companies have caught up with Fritz. I just did the same thing with Nutrafin Cycle and a little added fish flakes for an ammonia source, and it is cycled in less than 24 hours. Ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 20 ppm.

Hello Jadren, I've always used SEACHEMS Stability, would you say this product from FRITZ is better? Also, ask if your fish store will put brand new filter media (which you buy there) in their display (not for sale) tank for a week. Then take it home and add a few fish to your aquarium.
Once you have tank, you are set for life - in no time you’ll have over 100 tanks! (Or so I’ve heard... I mean... nobody really has 100 tanks...)

People should start selling cycled sponge filters on ebay. Is there some law against that? You could also cycle in filter media in a controlled fashion with a plastic tub, a heater (set to 30°C) and ammonium nitrate (or urea if you don't want to appear like a terrorist shopping for bomb building material) and sell that. There could be a bussiness there. It's not possible currently to do that at industrial scale. The bigger companies have tried, but you really have to ship the stuff wet from having been used.

I'm really not convinced with quick start 'bacteria in a bottle' type products. Utilizing them as an 'as well as' probably won't hurt, but in my opinion, you just can't beat a bullet proof, substantial cycle. I've always done this using non-surfacant ammonia and adding a small amount of tank media (hardscape or filter sponge).
The only other way I would consider instantly cycling a tank is swapping over a well established canister filter.
A proper cycle is a great foundation for your tank.

There are some bacteria starters that aren't snake oil. It appears that for example Dr Tim's and API Nite Out II, according to deep DNA sequencing studies, do contain the same AOB, AOA and NOB communities as long-running filters do, and they can be used to jump-start a filter. However, it's slightly more complicated than just putting the stuff into the water. In those cases, patience is actually bad, because then the right bacteria would just die out.

I agree patience is so important in many aspects of fish keeping but we live in a world of instant gratification and if you tell a kid he has to wait 6 weeks for his tank to cycle. He's like "I'm done" lol

@@JadrenAquatics For sure and I have about 50 tanks in my fishroom so i always have seeded sponges. I've never used any fritz products but obv their getting quite the hype nowadays but I've been chemical free for at least 5 years now not even using carbon so I don't intend to try. Other than a few occasional meds of course but I even try to stay away from that unless absolutely necessary.
