One of my guppy is sitting at the bottom of tank since 2 days. He is alive and moving but not swimming around at all..not sure what is happening . Pls assist.
I have ammonia in my tap water. What would you recommend? According to the API master test kit, approximately ..75 ppm. Given that my tank reading is about 3ppm. I'm gathering that if I cut back on feeding and do water changes, eventually the bacteria will catch up.
Cory , I am new to my 65 gallon aquarium, I was told if I use safe guard in my newly tank it would cycle with no problems, boy i was told a lye, now i have problems, my fish are dying and this is saddening. I'm on week 2 and very high spikes of nitrite and ammonia, please help ! I've watched this video, but needing some guidance, thank you! I had called and left my number, again I thank you for your time .
So I have an ammonia spike of 2 ppm. I have a 3 1/2 gallon tank with a female betta and two mystery snails. I have an Anubis and a moss ball for plants. I have a whisper filter, an air stone, a water heater. I don’t overfeed my betta fish and I just give zucchini to my snails. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Please help!
I had an amomia spike so I added a few handfuls of blue m&m's to the tank. It didn't seem to help much at all. I waited another hour then added some more, seemed to actually make it worse as half my fish had started floating upsidedown. All I had left after that was some green ones and a couple of orange so I had no othet option but to put them in along with a few mentos. I couldn't believe it but it cleared up the water almost instantly and once the mentos had finished bubbling away all the fish went back to swimming normally. Thanks for the great advice Cory, I truly had serious doubts about putting candy in my tank but it really did save my bacon. Cheers buddy.
I’m so glad the guy I met at petco told me to follow your channel. My son won three fish at a carnival and I want to try to keep them alive for as long as possible. I tested the water yesterday it was .25. I’ve had one for 5 days and the other 2 for 3 days. Your explanation was amazing of how it works. I know it hasn’t been cycled completely. I feed them twice a day, probably more food then they need at a time. I will reduce it to once a day. I’m used to having mammals and birds as pets, not fish so not feeding them for a couple of days will be hard for me. But if it means they will be better for it. Then I will.
Mars Chocolate Company stock takes drastic drop in value after TH-cam video goes viral showing that yellow M&Ms contain toxic levels of ammonia. LOL Another nice video that clearly explains the topic. Cheers.
That has to be the clearest, easy to to understand, explanation to ammonia spikes, I have come across. I have to add, I have been keeping tropical fish for over 40 yrs. You sir, are a godsend to aquarists, new & old in this hobby (obsession lol) Providing an idiots guide is not offensive, it's the best way to educate when applied correctly and with respect! Well done!
Hi, everyone , i will like to take this opportunity to thanks aquarium Co- Op , i follow his instruction step by step because a ammonia spike on my tank , in just 2 days doing a 50% water change in the morning and another 50% in the afternoon no ammonia in my tank and all my fish are super happy ,, this video should receive a Oscar , very well explanatory, excuse for my English am doing my best to express my gratitude , thank you for you amazing work brother , God Bless!!
This video really helped me understand, I had 8ppm and freaked out. Had some dying plants and I was feeding to frequently, the betta and shrimp are much better after these water changes and less frequent feedings. Thank you so much for the information.
I had my first ammonia spike in a year and a half and totally freaked out. Now I'm happy again. More than that my fish are happy again. Thank you lifesaver
The best part about this video you made is how calming it was for me. I am so much less nervous and I believe in myself that I will be able to keep my fish safe.

Don Ramon good to hear yea bro if you spend a little more there is a bacteria called turbo start works for fresh and salt I have both. It will cycle your tank quick.
Thank you for the tip. I'm new to this and have been struggling with ammonia for weeks now I've done water changes every other day with no change in levels and I have started to lose fish as a result. I've spoke to at least 30 different people all telling mr different advise none of which helped me. Had I known I was over feeding them and not truly removing ammonia from the water, we would have saved my fish. I was ready to give up on owning a aquarium. I am going to try this.
This (imo) is one of the best tutorial videos out there and thank you for explaining the cycling process in layman's terms... The M&M's are a nice touch too. I always have trace NH3/NH4, which I always assumed was from the water source, I never considered the possibility that Prime might be putting it in there. That's a great shout!
Thank you, Cory for making things so simple to understand for new fish keepers. I'm not a total novice but I'm far from being an expert and I'm learning tons of new stuff every day-one reason why I love TH-cam. There is nothing I hate more than asking a forum or FB group for help and someone slams you and talks down to you for something you didn't know or understand. No one is born knowing it all...everyone has to learn what they know. Why can't they teach instead of belittle?? You have become one of my "go to" places for something I need to know... along with Rachel and Joey!! Keep up the great videos!! :)
FINALLY the answer I been looking for!!! I find it to be screwed up that all the major feed companies recommend feeding 2 - 3 times a day but never mention the amount of fish you have in the tank. If you have 20 fish in a 75gal tank, a "pinch 3X's a day is NOT even enough and the food will rot before they even get to eat it forming ammonia. I just went from 3X's a day back to 1 as I work to get my ammonia level back under control and the cause IS truly over-feeding. Thanks man!!
You are the first person to explain it in a way that it makes sense. Thanks so much. My son and I have a axolotl and the ammonia has been creeping up every week. We have been doing a 50% water change every four days and weren’t sure why the levels were still going up. Thanks so much. Can’t wait to show him this video.
Your videos have helped me so much. I was in a panic because my ammonia level was between 0.25 and 0.50 ppm. I am taking your advice on letting my aquarium digest. My fish seem fine, I think it bothers me more. Thank you for your tutorials and your calm “you’ve got this” voice.
Top video. Thank you so much. Best example of how to get rid of ammonia. I’m an 80 y.o. woman and the water changes are a bit of a challenge. Lol started my aquarium 4 months ago and it’s going great. A 20 gallon tank. Again thank you!😊
you are the first person to recommend to me to stop feeding them, which now looking back makes so much sense. Ive been dealing with amonia levels that are staying around .25pm but today when i tested i noticed it was a little above .5pm and freaked out, i did a 40% water change and added a triple dose of bacteria start and felt so guilty. I'm glad to know the fish are semi-ok with the water now and wont die, (my main concern). Ill wait to feed them now until the levels are stable again. Thank you so much!
So many people forget to mention that prime and such only work for 24 hours thanks for adding that. This visual is so helpful! By far the best explanations I’ve seen. I had my tank for 5yrs added a new fish that had a virus and my whole tank crashed. I set it back up with new gravel and new filter (big mistake) and have been battling ammonia ever since. Finally getting it under control but was concerned about reducing feedings but you made a perfect point the ammonia is more deadly then them being hungry for a day or two. I wish I’d seen this weeks ago lol
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Just got my test kit and tested the ammonia. It was 1.0 ppm, a new tank (10 gal) with 2 zebra danios, a dwarf gourami, and 3 mystery snails, and a cory. Have plants in already..a couple java ferns and some floating plants, frogbit, and just added a big gob of java moss that I am going to put on some rocks. The tank has been cycling for about a week...fish are eating well (feeding lightly 2x a day) and seem fine. No gasping or odd behavior. I am so glad I found this video...love how you explain things easily. Plan on doing 50% water changes 1-2 times a day and not feed until I get the levels close to 0. Oh, forgot, I added 1 ml of Seachem Prime to temp. help the issue.
I watched this video last night and I actually stopped and looked around the kitchen to see if there was cameras in my house because everything he said about overfeeding fish and worrying about ammonia and changing the tank water etc. etc. etc. was exactly what I was doing! Thank you for the information I understand it when it comes to ammonia and my fish are not going to be eating today.
Thank you, Cory, I just bought a 10 gallon Monday and I am trying to figure this out. I currently own one Betta in that gallon and bought a test kit. The ammonia read at 0.5 ppm, and I did a 50% water change and holding off the food for 2 days. This video helped me a lot, I am very grateful.
I’m new to the hobby and just introduced 6 veilfin tetras once my nitrite and ammonia levels were 0 (tank is just over a month old and using stability with heavy load of plants) So thankful you made this video! i started feeding bug bites and fed them twice and ammonia spiked up to .2-.5. gonna remove uneaten flakes Thank you for making this video you are really helping me!
Thank you for this. I'm struggling with ammonia levels in my aquarium after treating with antibiotics, all other parameters stable, and I've been panicking and anxious all week. I only feed the tank once per day, and levels do not exceed 0.5 ppm even with every-48-hours water changes. Hoping with some time the bacteria will catch up and I can enjoy my tank again.
It was nice of you to bring in some visual aids and speak a bit about the maths involved. I feel a lot of new aquarium owners see/hear something like "do 10% weekly water changes" and don't ever take the time to find out what that actually means or if that's sufficient for their aquarium. This was good for helping with aquarium spikes, but if you feel like taking it up a notch you could do another one showing/explaining what happens with nitrate levels before and after the typical weekly maintenance PWC and why 10-20% probably isn't enough.
thank you for this...I have been breeding and keeping fish for about 10 years now...and I just got an ammonia spike in a tropical tank....your explanation really helped me understand the process...well done
I'm a brand new fish keeper and had my tank empty for just over two weeks before I added fish. I've already noticed huge amounts of conflicting advice, so ended up buying 11 fish for a 58 litre tank thinking I was doing the right thing. Bought testing kits and found the ammonia really high. Added salt as was advised salt is good for the fish. I've literally just done the first 50% water change, am hoping that will work.i have lost two fish but wasn't sure whether it was the ammonia or the aggressive male molly as both were male guppies who perished. Thank you for the advice.
Thank You so much !!!!!! You had me at the bubbles on the surface of the water....I have been having an ammonia spike in my 5 gallon tank for a few days now . I have checked out so many sites and all it did was confuse me with how they explained it. You have broke though to me. I understood you completely ...no confusion.!! So now in the morning I am going to start my 50 % water changes and cut back on the food for a few days. Its a relatively new tank, been cycling for almost three weeks. and my fish are doing okay so far..I know I should have waited at getting fish but the grandkids made sad faces and I cracked under their pressure to get a few danios. So thank you and we will see how this goes.
Been keeping tanks for years and feel i pretty much know all there is to know about tanks and the nitrogen cycle but videos like this are always great to watch, using m&ms are a great visual for the ppms in your tank, once again well done Cory, thats why we watch u
Thumps up for visual videos on topics, that beginners struggle with, and makes us feel stupid, when it´s still hard to understand after watching 50+ other videos. Thank you.
Amazing video....test kits are not available in many countries like mine...and if available they are extremely expensive that not worth buying....yet i am still successfull aquarist....no fish death since last 2 years
9:41 The information you gave at this part of the video saved my Betta fish. I never thought to check my tap water's ammonia level before watching this, and then I did, and it ended up being what caused my established tank to have a dangerous ammonia spike. Thank you, thank you!
I was too scared to ask anyone at a pet store for help bc i didn’t want to look like a bad fish keeper but this video was so nice and helpful and my fish are going to be so much happier now!
Your the best.I followed your information on my gold fish tank and it went from 8.0 ammonia to 0 ppm in 7 days with my water changes and feedings.Thank you very much🐟
Nancy Symonds I’m going through the same thing with my ammonia at 8.0, I’ve done a 50% water change two days in a row now and the ammonia hasn’t changed. How’d you do it??
Thanks for this Cory, I’ve been in this hobby since August and now have three tanks (my newest one is two weeks into a fishless cycle), you’ve become my go to guy for useful information. My first tank, which has been cycled since September has just started to show traces of ammonia, I’ve not let it rise above 0.5 PPM, and I’m doing 50% water changes to keep it well below that. I’ve added some extra ceramic media to the filter, and I will persist with regular water changes and reduced feeding. You’ve given me confidence it will rebalance. I’ve bought some Seachem Prime for when I do water changes, it has the best reviews out of the products I can get locally (in the UK). My tanks are all planted and I’m getting zero nitrite and nitrates readings.
@@kristaaustin3803 it settled with some filter media from another tank… I’ve since consolidated them into one bigger tank though, maintenance on multiple tanks is a total ball ache lol… my 12 month old Dachshund is far less trouble.🤣
Absolutely the easiest explanation I've ever heard. I've had an aquarium for 3 years and couldn't quite grasp the how to fix and why concept. Wonderful explanation!!!! Also M&Ms, yum! Lol
Thank you so much! This video was actually helpful! So many videos just explained the nitrogen cycle to me but didn't help me fox the issue. This was a great visual and gave me a plan!
the other day i was arguing about doing water changes vs.using prime for ammonia and/or nitrite spikes..glad to see cory agrees with me since i am new to the hobby..water changes save fish lives!
OMG! I have been fishin cycling since March (it's now June) - I've had ammonia up to 2-3 ppm and have treated with Prime thinking that eventually it will be high enough to transfer to Nitrites - hasn't happened - so, I'm super stoked to find this video and will start doing the water changes, thanks Cory!
Absolutely fantastic explanation of how to deal with high ammonia! I've just had to deal with high ammonia in my goldfish tank. My fish were listless and showing ammonia burns so I went online for help. I didn't see your vlog about it unfortunately so later on that day I fed my fish as they were so lively and hungry again. Tomorrow I won't be feeding them at all! I'm also going to take some of the goldfish to my local fish shop as my tank is definitely overstocked and that won't help either. Thank you so much for this explanation - it will stay in my head and I will be doing tests on the water each day to see how it's doing. I know that it is food that has caused this - I've been overfeeding them lately as they seemed so hungry. I won't do that again as I want them to do really well and I love my little water babies! Lots of love from Liz in the UK xxx 🐟🇬🇧❤️
I've recently encountered very high Ammonia due to over feeding & adding fishes. This video was so helpful on how to get rid of it. I love how U explained it. Very easy to understand. So THANK YOU!🐟🥰
Ok so I got my tank down to 0.25ppm ammonia and 0ppm nitrites and 40ppm nitrates and a PH of 6.6 using ur method which I’m so pumped for and I started feeding my fish 2 days ago and both days it has stayed there. Also the reason I’m not worried about the 0.25 ammonia because that’s what’s in my tap water so I think it is the good ammonia but I wanted to thank u so much for making this video it made it makes so much sense and made my tank finally balance out so quick mind you I started out (off the charts ammonia 0ppm nitrites and 160 ppm nitrates) and I followed ur guide and it helped me understand my fish tank so much better and again thank you so much I really appreciate it 😁
I have watched a lot of videos on beginning fish keeping, but the visual you gave was very, very helpful. Thank you. The content you make is very sound & well done. 🙏🏻
I can't thank you enough for this video. I'm semi new to the hobby I've had bettas for almost a year but have upgraded to bigger tanks from 1 gal tanks for them in the last few months and have since added corys and shrimp with my boys. I have a 5 gal which I did a no fish cycle on it with no problems. and a 3 gal which i'm doing a fish in cycle. On the 3 gal I had a HIGH ammo spike about a week ago and have been freaking out trying just about anything but this explanation and daily water changes has been the best thing Ive found. And for someone like me I learn differently than others and this was an amazing explanation for me thank you SOOOOOOOOOO Much!
Love the de videos and how you explain things. I'm going through every single one of the podcasts you've done from day one while at work to supplement for the videos while they come. Keep'em comin!
Aquarium Co-Op, wouldn't miss it for anything! This is my "nerd out channel" I'm subscribed to everything Aquarium Co-op. Much love from Miami Florida.
We had an ammonia spike and couldn’t figure out what was happening... did water changes and all that they suggest. Finally we encounter this video and he mention to look for a dead fish we don’t see! 💡 it was a dead fish! Thank you!!!!
new 38 gallon aquarium, 1 week with beginner fish. No water changes yet. All fish look well minus the 3 cherry barbs. The 2 males have gone into hiding for 2 day and the 1 females is bottom dwelling and breathing heavy. Tested ammonia and its between 1 and 2 ppm. All other levels are well. 1 airstone over side filter and water jet. Other fish are cory cats, neon tetras placeaux ranbows and platys. Suggestions?
I love your M&M videos, such a simple way to understand water chemistry. 😊 👍 Just before I upgraded my tank, I got an ammonia spike in the old one. A nerite snail had died a few days before the spike but I got it out within a few hours of it dying, tested my water and ammonia was zero but I did an extra water change anyway. Tested the water next day and I had a reading and so I did the 50% water changes with Ammo-lock to make it less toxic. Nothing worked. I turned that tank inside out looking for the source and never found it. Luckily my 33 gallon was on its way and I have a very helpful LFS who 'baby-sat' my Livestock while I waited for the new tank. I think as well as water changes, a cool head is your best weapon as panicking might make you do too much too soon if you see what I mean.
This is so great to know. I have a 75 that I ddid wraith the 5-6 week to cycle first, but my local fish store was telling me they don’t believe in that. I sprung a tiny leak in my 75 gallon this week, so I kept my sponge filters going while I tore it down to keep the bacteria alive. I would have loved to see a video on what to do in that case.

I watched this video last night and I actually stopped and looked around the kitchen to see if there was cameras in my house because everything he said about overfeeding fish and worrying about ammonia and changing the tank water etc. etc. etc. was exactly what I was doing! Thank you for the information I understand it when it comes to ammonia and my fish are not going to be eating today.
easily the most I have learned about this topic, amazing teaching and explanations
There's no ammonia in my tank now but my fish choked on M&M's
instadam86 💀💀
LOL
Thank you, Cory, I just bought a 10 gallon Monday and I am trying to figure this out. I currently own one Betta in that gallon and bought a test kit. The ammonia read at 0.5 ppm, and I did a 50% water change and holding off the food for 2 days. This video helped me a lot, I am very grateful.
Thank you!!! Dealing with this currently! This video is very helpful. I’ve been researching this a ton. This has helped me the most!
I’m new to the hobby and just introduced 6 veilfin tetras once my nitrite and ammonia levels were 0 (tank is just over a month old and using stability with heavy load of plants)
So thankful you made this video! i started feeding bug bites and fed them twice and ammonia spiked up to .2-.5. gonna remove uneaten flakes
Thank you for making this video you are really helping me!
Great vid, Cory. Your Nitrogen Cycle vid was excellent too. Thanks for taking all the time to do these for all of us.
Very helpful Corey. I’m watching this 4 years later. Good, simple explanation of ammonia! Good reminder
I was freaking out with my new tank when the results came back with high ammonia.. thanks for this vid Cory I feel much better now with this info
I've started to feed my fish 6 days a week. And the 7th day I substitute their food with blue mnms. The results are positively remarkable!
Break it down M&M style! So helpful- thanks for all you do to support this hobby for everyone 🥰
Great way of explaining this, eased a bit of anxiety for when the spike hits
thank you for this...I have been breeding and keeping fish for about 10 years now...and I just got an ammonia spike in a tropical tank....your explanation really helped me understand the process...well done
New to all this....but after watching your vid ..it makes it so much more easier to understand ..thanks.
Thanks Corey. Presently Going through an ammonia spike on an established aquarium. Great advice. Thank you!
Been keeping tanks for years and feel i pretty much know all there is to know about tanks and the nitrogen cycle but videos like this are always great to watch, using m&ms are a great visual for the ppms in your tank, once again well done Cory, thats why we watch u
I loved this so much, it made things a lot less scary as things went down in my aquarium
Finally I dont feel more confused from an educational tank video!!! Thank you so much, subscribed! I kept feeding my fish after my tank cleaning
Thumps up for visual videos on topics, that beginners struggle with, and makes us feel stupid, when it´s still hard to understand after watching 50+ other videos. Thank you.
Amazing video....test kits are not available in many countries like mine...and if available they are extremely expensive that not worth buying....yet i am still successfull aquarist....no fish death since last 2 years
Johnny Bravo They are expensive esp here in Ireland.
Amazon is great and does aqaurium test kits also
Great visual demo of what happens in the tank! Thanks Cory!!
9:41 The information you gave at this part of the video saved my Betta fish. I never thought to check my tap water's ammonia level before watching this, and then I did, and it ended up being what caused my established tank to have a dangerous ammonia spike. Thank you, thank you!
So what do you do if it is the tap water as prime only locks amonia for 24 hrs
Why do I love this guy... The first video I have seen by him... But I will be following... Let's see 1,000,000 followers
Finally I understand about Ammonia. One down three to go . Thank you
you had me at blue m&ms from Sydney Australia loving the videos. im new to fish and dived straight into a 200 litre tank and discus
I was just at your store. What a great place. I WILL be back.
One if not the best person on Aquariums, you sir a very knowledgeable and love the way you explain
This dude is by far the best to take advice from TH-cam!
Your video is the most easy to understand of all the aquarium video
Great information!!! I will definitely follow your instructions being that I am having a high ammonia issue with my new tank...
I was too scared to ask anyone at a pet store for help bc i didn’t want to look like a bad fish keeper but this video was so nice and helpful and my fish are going to be so much happier now!
Omg, thank you so much. This method made me finally understand what’s going on here. I am forever grateful.
It took me a week of 25 percent water changes everyday and I cut down on my feedings.
Nancy Symonds Good to know! Thank you!!
Great visual for those new to the hobby that have questions about ammonia! Also, now I'm hungry for M&Ms!
How’s it going? I get zero nitrates also but still have ammonia … totally lost on it. Lol
@@kristaaustin3803 it settled with some filter media from another tank… I’ve since consolidated them into one bigger tank though, maintenance on multiple tanks is a total ball ache lol… my 12 month old Dachshund is far less trouble.🤣
Best explanation and remedy for new pond with fish. Thank you!
Thank you! That is the first time it was ever explained in a way that I completely understand it now!
This is SO HELPFUL! I didn't want to disturb the process but have been worried about the levels. Going to do a 50% water change right away!
Have you introduced bacteria?
Iv watched a ton of videos about fish keeping, this guy always explains things very well and is very informative.
I have learned so much from you, Cory! As a new fish keeper, your videos have been an invaluable resource!
Some of your finest work here, great guidance thank you!
What an incredible explanation. Your passion for this is truly inspiring
Nicely done! I love the analogy with the sweets it helps new beginners like me to understand.
Thank you very much my friend, you really explained what my problem is, everything you mentioned I'm doing today, I hope the cycle is completed soon.
Explained nicely and easily understood ❗️👍👍
Love the de videos and how you explain things. I'm going through every single one of the podcasts you've done from day one while at work to supplement for the videos while they come. Keep'em comin!
Awesome. Thanks for watching and listening.
Aquarium Co-Op, wouldn't miss it for anything! This is my "nerd out channel" I'm subscribed to everything Aquarium Co-op. Much love from Miami Florida.
Hey Cory I just wanted to say thanks again for everything you do. I wish you nothing but the best building your empire sir. Seriously you rock man!
We had an ammonia spike and couldn’t figure out what was happening... did water changes and all that they suggest. Finally we encounter this video and he mention to look for a dead fish we don’t see! 💡 it was a dead fish!
Thank you!!!!
been keeping fish 25 years. have tried to explain to other new fish keepers, so hard to do. i will send them to cory and his M & Ms, Brilliant
new 38 gallon aquarium, 1 week with beginner fish.
Also planted aquarium, all plants are healthy
Cory, Thank you so much. I LEARNED SO MUCH . Peace from Victoria BC !
Your videos have helped me get setup with my aquarium and I've learnt so much from you just want to say thank you for giving your time
This is so great to know.
I needed this video soo bad right now! Thank you so much!!
Thanks so much for posting this video! This has been very helpful.
Thank you so much for this! I'm a visual learner and this helped me tons.
