The Importance of the Clone Stamp Tool
The Clone Stamp Tool is one of the most important tools that Photoshop has to offer. It allows you to copy areas of an image and i very useful for getting rid of distractions or skin blemishes.
In this episode we focus on getting the most out of the Clone Stamp Tool. You will learn how to navigate the settings and preferences for the tool. We also show you how we use the tool through several examples.
Using the Clone Source Dialog
The Clone Source Dialog is available by going to 'Window - Clone Source'. Here you will see options for Clone Source, Transformation options, as well as overlay options. We go through each of these options and show you how we set up our Clone Stamp tool.
Photoshop has the "Show Overlay" option checked by default however we prefer to keep it unchecked. The overlay can get in the way and is always available by hitting OPTN + SHIFT.
Adjusting Clone Stamp Selections
After using the Clone Stamp Tool to cover the lapel microphone there are still some adjustments that need to be made. It is best to use the Clone Stamp tool on new layers so you can transform the selection afterwards. To do this hit CMD + T then right click on the layer. You will be able to rotate, skew, transform and warp the selection so it fits with the image better.
After getting the Clone Stamp selection in place we use a great technique to blend exposures. Some areas of this layer need to be lighter and some need to be darker and we accomplish this using a combination of a brush tool set to blending mode "Soft Light" and the "Lock Transparency" Option in the layer dialog; This will allow you to only paint over non-transparent pixels.
We then paint black and white over the layer to brighten or darken it accordingly.
Use Clone Stamp with Different Brushes
Many people think that you are limited to a soft round brush when it comes to the Clone Stamp tool. The Clone Stamp tool can use any custom brush the regular Brush Tool can use. Try adjusting your brush shape or creating your own custom brush to best complete your project.

You always recognize anew the complexity and flexibility of this "simple tool".
You never stop learning. Thanks Aaron for this tutorial!
SO happy you mentioned the brush technique to get the light gradients correct. That one has always screwed me up.
***** I agree seriously this has been such a hugeeee help thank you very much

I don't understand people who dislike free top class tutorial. Thank you Mr. Aron for all your effort!
I thought i knew the clone stamp tool. Apparently not. Great tutorial Aaron :)
+Phlearn Photoshop and Photography Tutorials how can I select and area and make a brush out of what's inside that area. And i DONT mean a brush with only black and white. I know how to do that. I mean to take EVERYTHING that there is at this area and make a brush WITH THE COLOR just like the stump tool (but the stump tool samples much more than the actualy area stumped). !?
Thanks :)
Hey, I really want to practice this!, where I can find the same same photo?
My thoughts exactly! I had no idea you could do all of that with the clone stamp tool.
OMG, this video absolutely changed the way I use clone stamp tool. Great work!
I used to watch the official Adobe tutorials on TH-cam, and man, I've been a subscriber here for a couple of months, but those videos are laughable in comparison to how throughout you are with the lessons.
Best of all, not only do you show examples of where you can use the techniques, but you give beginner lessons on composition and lighting. Something people go through for years and years in school, you explain quickly and easily for the current project.
As soon as I can invest more into Photoshop, like a Wacom tablet and other things, I'll be sure to purchase at least a few lessons to support you for making these free ones.
Keep up the good work!
Official Adobe Tutorials are a punishment if we compare with Phlearn, haha. This is true, sometimes i fall sleep with the officials, because of the teachers... are... boring! Aaron make funny the classes, and this is very important, because he put passion on it, more than others do i think
Your videos are honestly the best photoshop teachings on youtube. I appreciate them greatly.
Thanks to you and your team for the ingenuity and generosity, you have saved the day.
Seeing and learning new techniques in photoshop always makes me feel like I'm learning magic 😊😀you can make things out of scratch and also make them disappear in seconds! Thank you guys for the awesome videos! Keep up the good work!
You are a great instructor. You sure know your stuff.
Love your tutorials. Very simply put and easy to pick up. Thanks!
OMG! I am SO happy for this! I am a beginner and I've been looking for a good technique and this is awesome!!! Thanks a lot!
Best advanced cloning tutorial ever. You've helped me solve several problems I've always had with the clone tool. I've always had problems with the clone dialog box ever since it was introduced. They are all gone. Thanks, thanks, thanks. I work with animal photography and fur hides a lot of mistakes. I feel like I've gone from mediocre and sloppy to exact and professional.
Hi Aaron! It doesn't matter which video I watch- I always learn a new technique!
You really make learning fun! Thanks so much!
I do really thought that my clone stamp tool was having fault as a beginner but not until now I learnt that am gonna change the current layer options.
thanks so much
Master Phlean, it's the best cloning tutorial I've ever seen on youTube!
Love the clone stamp tool... but i love it even more now! Thank you for you're great tutorials!
I must tell you how grateful I am for your tutorials. I've learned so much from you, much more than from school I went to. And i only started watching your tutorials two months ago...I find myself knowing more and more and even speed through some of the videos now;) Thank you.
Never used the clone stamp tool much, but after this i think its going to become my fave tool. Thanks Aaron for yet another great tutorial.
Loved it. I have gotten hung up on trying to replicate lines or the difference in brightness before trying to clone. This will help out big time
I have learned so much from phlearn. I am definitely considering going to graphics design classes for college so that I can become a pro at this. I do album covers, flyers, and other things for friends and family and they love what I do but I'm am no why near being professional at this. Learning from phlearn has taught me all of the basics and a lot of professional ways of doing things. I highly recommend this guy to anyone who want to learn photoshop. He's a very good teacher and if you miss something you can always watch over and over again until you get it right. Thanks phlearn. And thank you Aaron.
Thank you for the kind words!
This was a huge help. I had not used Clone stamp in a long time and forgot essential functionalities of the tool itself. As always love your tuts and keep up the good work.
WHOA
you've just
opened my eyes
and
removed a box i had stuck myself into while working with this tool!
totally appreciate these tips :D
Love love your tutorials!!! You make things so easy to understand. Thank you so much!!!
You always give the best tutorials but your advice at 7:40 about leaving particular physical characteristics alone is the best advice you could ever give! These people will recognize when things aren’t exactly as they are in real life and who knows, that scar or birthmark that you think isn’t attractive might be the very thing that they love most about them. This is just one of the many reasons I sub’d years ago.
You obviously have a gift... Thanks for sharing your expertise with the rest of us mortals...
I really liked the lock transparency trick with softlight to either darken or lighten areas! Thanks!!
You are @ the Top in Photoshop Tutorial Channels..... Brilliant Work

I found the clone stamp one of the most powerful tool in PS.
Great intuitive explanation of how this works. Thanks a lot. Good job
Great video! This video was the only one explained that I had to change the sample mode to Current & Below! No wonder I couldn’t see any clones.
You my friend... You are a genius! Thanks for all the great tutorials you are providing us
Excellent, as always
Well done, Aaron.
As always, great info.
may I make a suggestion about the placing of your clip on mic. Clip it to the left or right of your collar, as the resonance from your 'voice box' is picked up and adds a muffled quality to your voice sound. For people who have hearing issues, this can add a distortion that can have them struggling to hear your words correctly.
I often see TV broadcasters using the centre point to clip the mic, but the last thing you want is direct contact around the voice box. Try listening to your mic output via headphones, with different positions, and see which is the clearest. You might even try in front of you near the computer, as you are forward facing.
Thanks for teaching us your skills, hopefully some of mine might help you.
I read the title of this tutorial and I go "I know how to use the clone stamp tool, come on Aaron!". Then I click on the tutorial and watch anyway and go "holy $h1t, I didn't know that". Thanks Aaron!
