    Correction @ 1:23: The ProRes Raw is not external. That was a slip of the tongue that I'm used to saying. Both flavors of raw are internal on this camera.

      What do you think?

    • @networm64
      @networm64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@flashforum939 I do agree and that's more obvious recently when even top of the line cameras like A1, A7siii and either FX3 haven't got any level of a decent firmware update yet and a7siii is out for almost a couple of years now! Sony has turned from a good player to a very bad player recently and it seems they care more about influencer than their real customers! Nikon is doing exactly the opposite, even giving firmware updates to their old DSLR camera users. This trust making manner will lead to more major upgrades from loyal users, but what Sony is doing is rather persuading you to switch brand instead of upgrading your current model! They did the exact same shit with apsc lineup. No real improvement on a6500/a6300 and they only tried to convince you to buy the newer generation while the upgraded features were so marginal.

      Ain't gonna trust Nikon even if they come with 15 true Arri levels stops of DR, LOL. They screwed their customers over with the introduction of Z6/Z7 that were put out on the shelves with horrible autofocus to a point where you'd think they were selling beta-stage bodies to early adopters. Yes, they brought a decent firmware update in that regard 2 YEARS LATER, but what about those who initially bought it as proud Nikon fans? It doesn't matter what Nikon does; I'll always take what they offer with a grain of salt. Also, their lens lineup isn't as special as Canons per se.

    Sony has a lot to learn from this. I've got a A7r4 and a A1. A7r4, a 4000 euros camera has not recieved any update since about 2 years... Sony A1, "the flagship", still no major update (except rumors about a A1 markII...). A74, the entry level, has focus breathing compensation, A1 don't.... Sony doesn t update there products, they just throw a lot of new hardware waiting for pigeons to rush on it.
    I'm really disapointed and I hope "influencers" (although I now they need new products;) will talk more about this kind of issue.

    • @aboynamedjamil
      @aboynamedjamil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @marcback1
      @marcback1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@aboynamedjamil comming from Nikon there are too many things I'm waiting from sony to be stated here. If you own and use an A7r4, you shurely know how many strange features are locked in the menu for absolutly stupid reasons. For exemple, eye AF in video is locked if you have... IR remote engaged (good luck to find the reason the first time it appens to you)... There are a lot of funky stuff like that, that could be "solved" with a simple firmware uptdate. Adding lossless compression for RAW is a must on a 60Mpix camera (for this one, that might be hardware-incompatible)
      About the A1, it is a wonderfull camera but there is room for improvement, especialy in video. Desqueeze, better levels management. I was talking about focus breathing as a symbolic. A lot of people have bought this camera for video, it s very strange Sony don t keep up with ehancement.
      As a final note, I hope your curiosity was fullfieled, I've bought this 2 camera with my own money for work. It s a lot of money. I'm not a youtuber that's keep trying new stuff every month.
      I will keep those 2 camera for a long time.
      My initial comment was not meant to "cry", I didn't wait for this video to be worried about the lack of follow-up of Sony with there Cameras.

    The C70 getting Cinema Raw Lite is the greatest firmware update. It basically made this little $5500 cinema camera feel like the C300 MkIII. Obviously it's not the same, but that was my biggest gripe with the C70 and now with RAW it's such an incredible deal for a cinema camera.

    • @CinemaSteve
      @CinemaSteve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nordfresse Not really. It's all dependent on what you want it for. Z9 is a hybrid camera that shoots 8K which is cool but also not really practical. I also don't want full frame and want Super 35, and if I do want full frame I have the full frame adapter. Also I don't like pulling audio from a 3.5mm mic jack where with the C70 I have 2 mini XLR ports and a mic jack. Not to mention insane battery life by using the BP-A60 or A30 batteries. Then top it off with Canon color and lens choices. Majority of people who shoot video are already in the Canon or Sony ecosystem since Nikon is sports photography focused. I was already in the Canon ecosystem with L glass lenses so there was no way I'm switching to inferior Nikon glass.

Canon before NEVER would’ve made a $5500 cinema camera with RAW which basically butchers C300 sales for people like me who don’t want to carry around a C300. I feel like it was a response to BMD having incredible sales with the release of the pocket 4K and 6K. I think it’s hard for others besides BMD to get adoption since BMD can come in EF mount compared to having to buy into the Nikon or Fuji lens lines. But I know Nikon and Fuji do have people starting to shift to video now as well.

But I think in 2022 the cameras more and more gets to "Arri" level. Sure, Arri, RED, and so on got 14, 15 stops. But it is just amazing how close you can get with an URSA Mini, Kinefinity, C-Series or a Nikon. I like that there is a lot of competition going on. No more "bottleneck" BS from the companies.

    I don't understand half of what you are saying, but what I do know is that Nikon trailed in the video department the past few years. It looks like they have completely wiped the floor with the their competition with this camera and the updates. Blackmagic probably gets the award for largest amount of useful updates that I can remember. Data rates, overlays, RAW additions, etc etc. The BMPCC probably had the most epic updates or maybe its just because I owned one but their whole line has been great at actually adding features and improving the camera and listening to customers intently. It doesn't so much feel like they held features back like a lot of larger companies do so much as continued to develop the camera as it expanded its username and ran into more and more issues. Bravo for Nikon doing what I feel like is very much in the same vein.

    personally i don't care about dslr style cameras having a resolution higher than 4k, not to mention 8k raw. just make your sensor with a native 4k resolution, so i can get 4k raw without crop. or if i want normal 4k, there doesn't need to be an oversampling step to take up my camera's resources. it's silly for pro-sumer cameras to have 8k when the hugest imax screen is still in 4k. even the most pro doesn't need 8k, why should pro-sumer need it?

The only thing the a1 has over the z9 I can think of is raw continuous shooting of 30fps… Nice for wildlife photography, but that’s a niche feature. I’d much prefer to trade that for 60fps @ 25MP or Nikons 120 at 11MP. Without updates, the a1 is starting to feel like a scam.

    Wow, this might be the most exciting camera update I've seen in ages; however, I'm quite curious how Nikon is able to offer two RAW compression levels without being in violation of RED's patent. My personal opinion is if Nikon can prove that they have been using this compressed RAW on other stills cameras prior to 2008, then RED's patent could come into question, because a frame rate can not be the only thing holding together ones patent as increased speed is inevitable and clearly and obviously predictable, and something being obvious like this can invalidate a previous patent if the core tech existed before the patent in question, but it's hard to say and up to the courts if RED does attempt to get this removed like they did with every other company that has attempted to implement an in camera compressed RAW.

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @No Espam I've been checking since the announcement, but it's not publicly available to download yet from what I can tell. I have a feeling that RED's lawyers have already contacted Nikon, and just like with the DJI Ronin 4D and the Kinefinity Mavo Edge, which both had ProresRAW in their pre-release versions, had to remove it before they went public. There are a few potential ways that Nikon could make a deal with RED. If Nikon has some tech that would benefit RED in a positive way, like maybe say a 16 stop high speed low price sensor, then it's possible RED might trade the use of it in exchange for use of the patent; however, at this point that's just unknown speculation, and RED has been very, very tight handed about the letting any potential competition have access to compressed mosaic RAW. I just don't see RED making an exception when this would be direct competition with their Komodo.

Quick question: Ricci noted that the frame rate refresh rate in the EVF dropped notably when using the pre-capture mode making it's usefulness somewhat limited (I assume this is even when the 120 fps EVF refresh rate is enabled - dropping it even below the 60 fps by a significant amount. Would this finally challenge the hegemony of Sony and Canon? If I remember correctly, Nikon was the first company to put video features in a DSLR. It has taken them more than two decades to produce a camera which the Sony and Canon couldn't and didn't want to do. Cost is a factor. But, this is a game changer to say the least. I wonder whether Nikon while sitting on the sidelines got so frustrated with the games played by both Sony and Canon that they finally decided to give us what we have speculated and begged all these years. But, cost is a serious factor.

Just recently researched the Angelbird CF Express 4Tb after i purchased one a month or so ago and in red letters this card is only compatable w the Z9 !So the card can prob keep up. I have been using this card in my GH6 flawlessly in highest codecs and frame rates! Yestarday i upgraded to the 2.0 and when i did i now receive a prompt warning this card exceeds 2Tb! I would had sent it back if it didnot work initially but it worked without any problems . Like Atomos i assumed trial and error such as a card would not work then would work after an update. That is not the case. Totally backwards! There is no original firmware to download to bypass just the 2.0 new one. Would a factory reset do just that? Thanks

    I was an early adopter of both the original BM Pocket and the Samsung NX1. Both were woefully incomplete on release. I hesitated calling the BMPCC a “camera” because it barely did camera things - it was more like a sensor back.
    BM got a pass for some reason, but the NX1 was evicerated and never recovered. Both became amazing cameras with early FW updates. The BMPCC was a huge success and went from strength to strength. The NX1 croaked.
    I dislike this tendency to ship hardware that’s not quite ready, expecting a “second chance” through firmware updates. I love having additional surprise features unlocked down the road, but when you buy a new camera it should at least do what’s expected of it on day 1.
