Great video! I been Nikon for so long hoping they would awaken from their video slumber and finally come out with something competitive. The Z9 is insanely good and you forgot to mention one of the biggest things I think is important - no overheating on the first version, no telling customers just to turn it off for 10min and then no versions with fat heatsinks and fans on the outside!!! I think that speaks volumes about commitment to quality. Only reason I have held off is because I shoot gymbal video and feel this thing is a bit heavy to mount to a Ronin - maybe with a body-rig.
It is heavy, true, but I shoot it on a gimbal a lot and it works fine. I use a side handle for better weight distribution. The AF is awesome to work with. The weight is actually really nice if you shoot handheld, in combination with the IBIS footage looks really good.

One thing that I have observed with my Z8 is that putting IBIS in Sport mode helps A LOT when handheld. I am curious to see what other 8k video options are going to come out this year. Guessing a Lumix S1H II or a Pocket 8k... But Nikon hasnt gotten nearly enough praise for this Z9. Only thing it is missing I feel is the recording option to ssd via usbc, which should be a no brainer with 8k60 RAW....
It’s not missing that I use Zikay ssd to cfexpress works seemless I use version 1 saw version 2 on Amazon saves me a ton of money and speed is same as 1500+ cards
Thank you for this. I have two Z9 bides and shoot stills. I want to start doing some video and this is exactly the kind of information I need to give me the courage to start shooting video.
Loved this, thanks guys. I just started playing with video In the Z9 (I'm mostly a stills photographer) love it so far, massive files, but great footage to play with, and the stabilisation is better than I thought.
Nikon has that color science of being really punchy/saturated but not forced or over saturated. Skin tones and overall look is gorgeous. But it’s a look that many art directors and artists don’t choose. Nikon has been sandwiched and marketed in the wrong direction for many years. I’ve been shooting for over 25 years. When I graduated college in 2000 I assisted pros for eight years, this is a practice not followed by many of todays “professionals”. In that timeframe, I would say 5% of the commercial photographers I assisted used Nikon when they weren’t shooting medium format, and in the last 10 years, I only know three working photographers that shoot Nikon and all three of them photograph weddings(not saying that as a negative statement). I don’t know a single working professional that uses Nikon for video work. Not even a hybrid shooter. I’m impressed that they are still in the mix.
I think the poppy positive colours really worked for this travel / commercial film. Probably not to my personal taste but not to say they couldn't be graded differently.
Lion's head is one of the more hectic walks because it's straight up, but the views are epic. I want to move from my D750 to Z9 for stills. Autofocus in low light is my only concern
The one thing I do love about super high resolution is that I can watch this in 360p and it's still high quality. 4K footage, I still watch in 720p or 1080p depending on the bit rate. 360p looks like 1080p on a smartphone.
Thanks Andy great video as always. Great to see a Nikon with good autofocus and video features. Good to know about the dynamic range and its limitations. The animal tracking on this camera is incredible.

Great information on a non review, but actual behind the scenes on how how you used the Z9!! I have only done short clips with my Z9 and looking to incorporate into my knowledge. I am looking for a camera/travel back back and wanted to ask what you all used in trip ? Any issues with the airlines on your bags? Great info on video and the advice on setup!
I just read this was done with firmware 2.0 and wanted to ask what your thoughts are with the newer 3.0/3.1 updates? I have found the 3.0 was a major update in Wildlife tracking!
Great stuff ! I’m on the fence about sending all my Sony gear back and moving to z9 to use as a hybrid, I’m curious why only Nikon users are using the da Vinci software and not the typical premier or after effects? Will these files not work with other software
You are right! I haven't been able to find enough videos of Nikon Z9! Would you be able to compare it with Sony a7sIII or FX6? Many come from the Sony side. I personally found that the Nikon Z9 (maybe due to sensor size) and its lenses seemed to make colors and people 'pop' out, looking 3D.
Lovely footage! I have a question. You mentioned about your workflow of Premiere -> Da Vinci -> Premiere. What codec format did you export from Da Vinci before importing in PP for final export. Does this lower any quality considering you export the footage 2 times. One in DaVinci and Final in Premiere.
How Hot Of Weather Have You Shot Video Do You Have Any Problems With Any Overheating I Live In US Califonia And Were I Live In The Summer It Can Get Over 100+ Degrees Thanks For The Video
Personally I don't need raw -- 10-bit 422 is fine, but I do need good AF, and the Z9 just isn't quite there yet. But I will say the Z9s colours and oversampled IQ are fantastic.
The video I was waiting for. As a Nikon User its really nice to see that it works so well. I think its the best hybrit System availible atm. The only "downside" is the heavy price tag. But, 8k 120 RAW internal... thats insane.
For stand alone shooting where internal sound isn’t a major requirement, or for b-roll, the files look great. But if you’re used to working with cine cameras, the Z9 leaves out lots of basic features. And it you want to use this as a quick switch hybrid, it’s awful because the settings and exposure banks overlap too much. For instance, I may want to shoot stills in aperture priority, but video in manual for better control. Well the mode setting carries over when you flip the stills/video switch. That approach is years out of date now. Fuji as an example has a much more sensible independent menu system. But in my case I bought it primarily for the stills and I have cine cameras to carry the video load. #nikonZ9
@@KobusGevelspar There’s nothing uniquely better about the light gathering ability of the Z9 sensor over recent cine cameras. The Z glass renders well, but since I avoid autofocus on most things I shoot, I would much rather have the hard stops of real cine glass and the stability of PL and native EF mounts rather than having to adapt lenses to the Z mount.
@@waveland I get it, if I had pro cinema hardware I would think the same. Before I made the step to being/wanting to be filmmaker I was photographer and I have 15k of Nikon glass. It works great for my S1h with an adapter, but while the 4k image is fantastic, but the slowmotion is only in crop and AF is not good enough, even with native glass. For interviews and gimbal work good AF is really handy and therefore I had high hopes for the Z9 as my video workhorse. Using a RAW workflow in Resolve the image looks good, but as others have stated: I miss the cinema camera features like a good light meter in the display, internal ND's and so on. Also, the fact I have to use other software than I am used to bothers me, still no support in Adobe. Panasonic has better IQ straight out the camera in vlog, in that regard Nikon still has some improvements to make when it comes to their n-log gamut.
@@KobusGevelspar Resolve is worth the effort. I wouldn’t use any other NLE at this point, and the embedded color management tools speed up the workflow even further. It will be interesting to see how far Nikon goes in adding video centric features going forward, but it’s a long way from becoming an A-cam for my production work.
I find the bokeh to be almost non existent due to the short flange distance. What has been your experience Andy? Any other Nikon z9 video shooters feel free to chime in. Also lenses you use for video apart from Z mount?
It won’t be removed. If anything Nikon would have to pay a royalty going forward and in arrears. But that only applies to units in the USA. And that’s if RED loses. The trial could take a couple of years too. So shoot now, worry later. :-)
I tried to edit this video in DaVinci but I had no chance finishing it up in time with my noob skills in that software, hehe. So I just jumped back to Premiere Pro for editing and final touch. But we did of course color correct in DaVinci. That was fun! It took me only 1,5 hour to color correct everything in this video :)
I love that stabilization in Resolve, between the three presets I normally always get a usable result. That's without any in-camera or lens stabilisation (FX6 & Art lenses).
Do you have any recommendations on where I can look to find how to optimize this for streaming through a video capture card and what capture card supports the Z9? Thank you
No, you can’t modify ISO in post, but Nikon has stated that using the exposure slider in the RAW panel in Davinci substitutes the ISO setting. They claim that the Exposure slider reacts and treats the footage the same as changing the ISO value in post. I’ve tested their claim and it definitely lines up! Hope this helps!
Im wondering whats your go to camera now? Was it the gh6 because you used to have gh5? Have you moved on to other brands? Or does it depends on the projects now?
You can get significantly more dynamic range at this price point though, or even below this price point actually. If you are focusing on video, I think you get more bang for your buck by getting a Canon C70 (16+ stops) or Sony FX3 (14+ stops) for example. Unless you really need 8K for some very specific reason. Generally dynamic range is a lot more important.
The image quality from the Z9 is superior to both the C70 and FX3, if you can get away with 12.5 stops (most can) then it's the better hybrid choice. I shoot with my RED V Raptor for Redbull and I use 8k every single day and matching the RED footage with the Z9 footage is simple and works almost flawlessly, my RED is capable of around 17 stops of DR. On the other end the over-sampled 4k from the Z9 is quite astonishing and I have all but stopped using my R5 and A1 for run and gun 4k now, yes the Z9 is a lot heavier but it's OK for me. For a hybrid there really isn't anything that does all it does so well, until the R1 comes out that is and by then the A1 will be 3 years old and the Z9 will be coming on 2 years old if the late 2023 release date for the R1 holds true (crazy how time flies). I do love my C70 though as a pure video camera and I actually use it daily with my Canon 600mm prime and the RF 15 to 30, also the Canon speedbooster is great making the C70 fullframe, again the C70 4k matches really well with the Z9. Future is bright for Nikon as they don't have a cine line to look after so future releases will offer top spec video without compromise. The Z8 could be a beast as-well, 8k 30, over-sampled 4k from a 60+ mp sensor and I think all it will lose against the z9 is high frame rate stills which for me I only need 15 to 20 for my Surfing, Skateboarding, Snowboarding and BMX stills. FX3 is a fantastic option for e mount users on a budget and require no stills option and produces glorious footage.
@@NMCWatkins I definitely agree that Z9 is a better hybrid choice as you said, because C70 and FX3 aren’t really hybrid cameras. But strictly talking about video here, I would prefer FX3 or C70. I think 12,5 stops of dynamic range is a little low for this price range, and having 14-16 stops is quite helpful when shooting interior in daylight (not burning out windows so easily) or maintaining the most information in the sky while also keeping the shadows. I understand that some people appreciate 8K but I think dynamic range plays a bigger role for the majority of cinematographers. At least for me.
@@richardbrout2242 I don’t own that camera myself so don’t know it too well, point was that Z9 isn’t a lot of bang for the buck if you’re mainly looking for a video camera. Actually not for a hybrid either I think, I’d save some money and buy the Panasonic S5 II instead in that case (or II X)

@@waveland True, but so far Nikon seems to take things seriously. What is your current A-cam if you don’t mind me asking?
Really miss Eskild😔😔
I find the bokeh to be almost non existent due to the short flange distance. What has been your experience Andy? Any other Nikon z9 video shooters feel free to chime in. Also lenses you use for video apart from Z mount?
Thanks for the video. I am interested in Nikon Z9 but concerned if the raw capability will be removed or limited due to the patent dispute.
The world of codecs is interesting and something I don't know too much about. But it's interesting to see how RED sees a conflict with the N-RAW.
It won’t be removed. If anything Nikon would have to pay a royalty going forward and in arrears. But that only applies to units in the USA. And that’s if RED loses. The trial could take a couple of years too. So shoot now, worry later. :-)
@@mikeblack_pw Why only units in the USA?
Because that’s where the patent is held and where the lawsuit is being tried.
I'm curious about what your shutter speed was, if your frame rate was 120fps: was your shutter at 1/120 also, or 1/240, or something else?
You should do more testing in Davinci, I think it's better software and stabilization is better and faster as well.
Capefilmsupply!!! Yay!!!
What are those lens you have used, if you could write it down to be great
Do you have any recommendations on where I can look to find how to optimize this for streaming through a video capture card and what capture card supports the Z9? Thank you
how does it go against fuji xh2s's 14bit footage?
Great video. 12.5 stops of dynamic range means it's not a camera I'd consider for video.
Hello, can you modify ISO in post with N-Raw? Thank you! Love your videos!
All good, but I am still waiting for a tiny little compact (in comparison to the Z9) Z6III. ^^
Great video. What music are you using?
@@Freddd95 Dynamic range over 8k for me personally. For the work I do DCI on the FX6 is plenty good.
Yea, that is if you are ok with that 1970's diffusion filter look the C70 has making everything look like it was filmed in a steam sauna.. sure?
@@richardbrout2242 I don’t own that camera myself so don’t know it too well, point was that Z9 isn’t a lot of bang for the buck if you’re mainly looking for a video camera. Actually not for a hybrid either I think, I’d save some money and buy the Panasonic S5 II instead in that case (or II X)
