    Thanks so much for covering this one, Gerald! I've been a long-time Nikon user, pretty invested in their lenses, so it is REALLY nice to finally see Nikon stepping up their game in video, and hoping some of their features trickle down to the lower-end cameras too. So glad to see this gets the Gerald-Approved purple star!

    Not sure if you knew this based on how you worded it in your video, but there is a physical off switch for vertical shutter & vertical controls. I mostly shoot stills but run into the same problem of accidentally pressing vertical shutter & dials, especially when cradling the camera to shoot low angles (I'm a longtime Nikon shooter, lucky to have had the Z9 since first batch delivery). The SWITCH around the vertical shutter button (same as the on/off/light switch around horizontal/normal shutter button) is a locking switch that deactivates all the vertical controls including the shutter button. When on the "L" function, it's in lock mode. This should solve those ergonomics. As for the focus modes button (left hand side), I think Nikon is fighting hard to have an always available focus mode button as they did on their pro DSLR bodies as a fail safe. Unsure if they'll budge on that over time. Cheers! Thanks for the great reviews.

      @patricksmith2553 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agree! All professional video camera's are heavy and I don't see weight as being a factor, like he said, it helps stabilize the camera. I don't think it's fair to knock the Z9 for being heavy or heavier than other camera's. The RED 8K is heavy, the Canon C500 Mark II is heavy, etc., etc. I live in Los Angeles and I see movies and commercials being shot here all of the time. Arri's Alexa LF is often the camera of choice here for those purposes and the setups being used, in the streets (not in studio) are huge! I can't imagine what they weigh, it must be 15-20lbs easily. People literally add rails, monitors or even multiple monitors and you name it, to make their camera's heavier, lol. So saying the 3lb Nikon Z9 is heavy, really does not sit right with me. It's designed first and foremost to replace the Nikon D6 or flagship camera's and most of the users who the Z9 is targeted at, are used to and even prefer a heavy, well built camera with integrated vertical grip. Plus if you're an adult, especially an adult male, you should be able to easily carry 6lbs all day, without whining about it. The Nikon does not overheat and it shoots for hours and hours, plus it has a huge long lasting battery, which you wouldn't get with a smaller, lighter camera!

    Great video! I'm glad that you mentioned and called out a theory on the H265 vs ProRes dynamic range. This is something that I'd noticed in some R5 videos on YT (with externally recorded ProRes). I asked the creator about it and they said they'd definitely noticed the dynamic range difference too but no idea what makes it happen. I feel like I've also noticed it (anecdotally) on my S1. Really glad to hear a theory for it because I feel like I've been crazy with noticing it.

    I am so happy to see that you tested the Z9. Is it the best video camera of 2022? I don't think so. But as an over 10-years-Nikon shooter and already Z9-owner I am really pleased by it and happy, that Nikon mades a lot of their homework to get right behind the competition. And luckily most of the things you named are software issues and will maybe fixed in the future. For now I am really impressed what they have done. FYI: You can lock the buttons on the grip if you switch the lever near the second release button to "L". Looking forward to your update after the new firmware is coming out. Love your channel :)

    I always enjoy listening to your videos, but I have to ask a silly question because video (Nikon shooter) is new to me. I appreciate the content you pack into each video and I know why you move through the review as quickly as you do. That said, do you have a "Video basics" discussion where you slowly break down the terms you're using and the relevance of why things like this are important? Experience videographers will follow your review details easily, but for us novice folks it's a bit overwhelming (but still love hearing about it). If you know of a good place to start (other than getting the camera in hand and messing with it) I'd love a link. I would make UNDOING your details all the more worth while. Have a great New Year.

    Thanks for the shoutout and as always, excellent video :) The official LUT for the Z9 is interesting in that it's basically the same as the Z6 BUT they skew the white balance. When you set the correct white balance prior to applying the LUTs though (mine or the official one) it ends up basically a wash, so I can say that my LUTs are still compatible for all the Z series cameras. Cheers from Japan! Paul :)

    How do you think this would compare to the R5C for a package? Given the price difference as well.

    I hope Storyblocks values how gerald incorporates the ad so that viewers don't skip lol. I personally skip almost all in video ads (I pay for YT premium) but somehow Gerald gets important info into the ad, such as when he switches audio to hear the difference.

    Do you think you’ll ever update the canon R6 R5 clog 3 dynamic range test? I just rewatched your review your future log test. I’m sure many viewers including me would love to know how your projections compared to the updates.
    Loved the intro call backs 👍👌

    Amazing review as always, Sony user here yet really impressed with the specs on the Z9. Though I'm just curious, do you really talk that fast or do you speed up the videos?

    Hello again Gerald, i must admit i was eagerly waiting for your review of the z9 (more than other reviewers admittedly...) Like i've said before i'm an old photographer wishing to start doing videos from now on. Steep learning curve i know, but at least my photography background helps a bit. So with that goal in mind i've been devouring ''videocentric'' camera reviews for months now. So far the 2 cameras that seemed interesting for me were the Blackmagic 6k pro for it's Braw format, in body ND filters and it's price, and either the Sony A7sIII or the FX3 for everything else; low light performances, auto focus, smaller form factor, greater audio capabilities etc. That was right up until Nikon got their Z9 out. Now i'm not so sure any more. I have to say i've been a Nikon shooter since the 80's including my transition to digital in 2008 ish. But i eventually lost confidence in Nikon with it's multiple fiascos such as over heating flashes, Oil spots on the D610's sensors, which Nikon took forever to admit and never really fixed, releasing other bodies instead and most importantly their shocking habit of releasing unfinished products giving me the feeling the consumers were their product testers (at their own expense). But in my situation if the Z9 proves to be any good for video, it might still be the most economical solution since i still have Nikon glass although they are F mount lenses and would require the FTZ adapter . At this point i'm really interested in seeing just how good and easily editable the Z9's video files are. I'n my mind Nikon has never been great video wise, but the Z9 just might prove me wrong. So far reviewers of the Z9 that have concentrated on it's video capabilities, mostly regurgitated specs and showed us unconvincing footage in the sense that everything looks like camcorders videos, seems nobody cared to do a good well colour graded, cinematic like movie with this camera, aside from Nikon's own ads which i do not trust at this point, besides they don't look very cinematic to my eye anyways although super precise (descriptive). Also i have concerns about the real gimbal possibilities with such a tall and heavy body. So if you do such tests while you have the camera in your hands and care to show us the results, i'll be watching. Thank's again for all you do for us not so pro would be videographers.

    Nobody can geek out on specs like G.U. - I was beginning to wonder if you'd be reviewing this beast. I'm still (not so) patiently waiting for my NPS order to be fulfilled, and this was a tasty treat to help bide my time. You might consider changing your name to Gerald Welldone (grill marks optional).

    Should I use that instead of ProRes?? What are the downsides/upsides??
