Imagine being Neil Peart: you're widely considered to be the greatest living drummer, yet you still have enough humility to seek out a drum teacher (Freddie Gruber) & change your style to get even better. That's just...well, incredible. BTW, your comment that you feel the need to tell people about this? That's how you know you're really a Rush fan lol.
Yesss! This makes me happy 😊Thank you for picking this one, it's so amazing. I love these guys man the first part was incredible by all 3 of them, Neil's solo was out of this world. Great reaction!
As a drummer myself, Neil is the reason i play music....hes even the reason i play guitar. Its hard to watch neil play anymore for me. I lost the musician i looked up to the most...BUT was left with his inspiration when he passed. I can never repay this band and this man in particular..
As great as Malignant narcissism is Neils’s solo steals the show for me. His ability to create any sound and play any style is awe inspiring to see. My brain can’t even comprehend what I takes to pull that off. There will never be another Neil Peart !
If you’ve seen the documentaries, one of them goes into detail about this song being the product of a jam Geddy was doing in the studio, but he didn’t know Nick (their producer) was listening and recording. There was already two instrumentals on the Snakes and Arrows album, then this came along and there was three. They agreed to lay it down as a song, but Neil’s kit had already been shipped out of the studio. The only kit remaining was a small practice kit (4 or 5 piece). It’s absolute wizardry that they miced up that kit to sound like some massive drum set. This is the guys being the guys - indulgent, slightly goofy, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. ✌🏻
The other key part was, Geddy had just received a Jack fretless bass and was "messing around with it." The basic track was recorded as noted above, then Alex came in and added the guitar part. Geddy and Neil were, at the core, a PHENOMENAL rhythm section!
My FAVORITE Neil Peart DRUM SOLO (and that's saying a lot), and it boils down to you can tell that NEIL IS ENJOYING HIMSELF! He didn't where his PLEASURE on his sleeve, so that is AWESOME to me! Also... Yes, Alex was using FEEDBACK! By the way, it was the Beatles that first used FEEDBACK on the intro of their song 'I Feel Fine' fact!
Saw this live in Vancouver BC. Neil was a compositional drummer. He was thoughtful, controlled, and passionate about making music and a musical statement. It's not just hitting stuff.
The lighting effects Rush used specifically for this song were incredible. Rush was the first band in history to win an award for stage lighting for "Appearance of lights in motion", without any lights actually in motion. They accomplished this by using multiple rows of parallel lights then simply alternating even and odd numbered lights.
Probably my favorite professor solo, even more than the Frankfurt solo. A long time ago, I went to a Kiss concert as a punky 6 yr old and walked out a total Rush freak. 17 concerts later (yes, i didnt see them as much as i would have liked but i was military for many years and didn't have a choice) yessss... that was Alex using feedback with his tube amps, yes that was Geddy using a fretless base and yes that is why I love musicians that try new things. Neil had just finished studying with Freddie Gruber used what he learned to make this solo. Never stop learning, never stop growing!!! And music is a language all understand.
I'm sure that if Neil didn't play rock, he would have been quite happy to play big band stuff. Here's a Buddy Rich tribute concert he was a part of: th-cam.com/video/zvTBo7idfVM/w-d-xo.html
The studio version of this on the Snakes and Arrows album is only 2 minutes and 17 seconds. They definitely all turn this into something special! And yes, it was indeed Alex using the amp to give him some cooool feedback! Glad you liked it, and are continuing your journey, discovering the absolute masterpieces of this epic band. They will always be my favourite band of all time. Cheers your friendly neighbour to the North 🇨🇦.
I think the most amazing thing is that is played as it was written, there may be changes as the song evolves, an A# instead of a B here or something to that effect but I'd say that when I saw him play this in Austin it was 98% the exact same song as when he played it in Chicago or where ever. Not just a drummer, a true percussionist.
I LOVE the way you fell in love with RUSH! I've watched several of your RUSH reaction videos and this is another great one! My wife and I used to see them every time they came to Dallas and we have always loved them (studio and live). This instrumental was special watching all of them them and then to top it off with Neil's solo... Long live Buddy Rich and RUSH!! Thank you for creating this reaction video!!
Great choice!! There are many many recordings of Neil's solos over the years. It's interesting to hear how his solos evolved from the 70s up through the 40 some odd years of his career. A true master.
Good guess! Yes, that's FEEDBACK, baby! Not note bending or such. Matter of fact, check out their album Feedback, cover songs they did when first starting out. You seem to like that 'over-under' switching deal Neil loves to show off with, cool! He was CERTAINLY THE GREATEST, EVER! Rotating drum riser, unique & too cool also! That allows him to put either of the three 'sets' of drums facing towards the audience, mind you, to have proper manners. Along the same theme as this song, check out, 'Where's my thing?' & 'Where's my thing? There it is!' Two more great instrumentals with a 'self-serving' theme. Wink! Wink! BTW, I like when you get so excited you get 'the vapors' and have to fan yourself & also like it when you're bouncing up & down with excitement in your seat while listening to the tunes is just lovely too, Red! Keep up the great work, especially with rush! You have a HUGE catalog to tackle there, And it's ALL GOOD! Enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole, from which you may not ever return. It's happened thousands of times before with thousands of people of all 'profiles' & backgrounds, so it's kind of so predictable for me to spot newcoming 'adopters' right away at this point in my life. Your huge smile while listening & the loss for words after a tune are two symptoms of going down the bunny hole. You are well on your way, dear! You are also really thinking about both the music & words, which can be overwhelming to some people when they first hear rush's music. That's why you are at that loss for words, dear. No worries, it's very common, Red! BeGood, BeWell, BeReal
I was lucky enough to see Neil Peart perform that on the 1997-1998, Evening With Rush Tour! He is amazing! Love to see Your Rushgasm, R.H.N.! Keep up the great work! ❤❤❤
I was looking for a term akin to the 'Floorgasm" that people get when hearing Floor Jansen do her thing. "Rushgasm" is not a bad try but there has got to be a better word. Anyone?
I saw that Test for Echo tour in Tampa Fl! 1997-98! They also played the complete 2112 on that tour! Rush did very few interviews during their first 10 years of existence. Finally heard one on late night radio in 1984 with Geddy. He was asked what the band’s secret to their compatibility and longevity was. He said, “We never had a tie vote”.
IIRC, it was also never a vote that went 2 to 1. They always did things unanimously. And while Alex didn't like the idea of adding keyboards, he realized that it was important to experiment with the new sound. And admitted that it made him play better and differently as the guitar needed to find a way to be heard over the keyboard. And in later years, Geddy said something like "If I never had to play keyboards again that would be fine with me."
Great reaction & I'm glad you finally got to this one - I suggested it a while ago and I knew you'd love it ,plus I wanted your reaction for a song done towards the end of Rush's lengthy career
Yes, Alex was using feedback ala Hendrix, whilst bending the strings(both with just his fingers and the whammy bar). They are poking fun at themselves with this just before they lay down the law as being the greatest band of all time and space! I love how you fully embrace every nuance of their music. You remind me of myself when I was discovering their greatness. Only I was doing so with guitar in hand trying to figure out just what the hell was going on musically, and emotionally without breaking my brain. But I could never make I look as good as you do. As for Neil's drumming, just when I thought he couldn't top himself, it was like he could read my thoughts (it's a short subject so no challenge there), and respond with "challenge accepted".
One of the reasons Neil has so many drums is so that he can have a lot of different pitches to work with. All those toms have individual pitches from high to low. And where basically every other drummer plays rhythmically... he plays melodically... having pitch and rhythm just like a guitar or bass.
You have done a few reactions from this concert and still have not noticed the rotisserie chicken stoves to the left side of Neil Peart's drums. That's hilarious.
I being a drummer of the past love Neil ....and your comments......By the way .Neils solo live in Frankfurt is my favorite and maybe his best....noticed you seen it hun.
Hey pretty redhead! Refer someone who's never heard Neil to the drum solo performed in Frankfurt, Germany in 2004. Many believe that one is his best solo. He's a little younger in that one, and the energy he was able to muster shows. He literally tears up the acoustic side of the kit - it's mind-blowing! FYI-so you'll be more impressed! When he starts the big band jazz part of the solo, ALL the horns you hear were triggered by him. He either hits a small trigger pad of which there are many hidden throughout the kit, OR he triggers the noise with his left foot. Sometimes the electronic cymbals trigger the sounds (horns), or he uses the big, electronic xylophone-mirimba device to trigger the noise. Eventually the big band music is a backing track that he initiates with the xylophone, but the first 45 seconds, or so, of the horns are triggered by him. When you remember he's playing the drums, AND triggering the horn noises at the right time without it perceptively affecting the drum playing it becomes even more mind-blowing! At least it is to me. There's a joke about Neil. "What do musicians use to keep time? Answer - A Metronome. Ok, then what does a metronome use to keep time? Answer - Neil Peart Actually, Peart had an uncanny sense of time. Even though he didn't graduate from high school, he said a lot of the time he would think about mathematical equations, specifically differential equations (part of Calculus) while he played. He had the ability to move in and out of odd time signatures smoothly. Someone said he was able to make odd time signatures "danceable"! All 3 members of Rush multitask with Geddy Lee being the most obvious as he sings, plays the bass guitar, AND plays keyboards (synthesizers). Neil Peart is triggering a LOT of sounds in many, many Rush songs and the audience has no clue because he was so damned good at hiding it. I've rambled on enough. I'm enjoying your Rush reactions-keep it up!
I am telling you, there is nothing in this world quiet like watching these guys get it on and they do the entire concert!!! But to see the professor do his thing on those drums is a treat like no other. Forever the GOAT: We miss and love you Neal. RIP
This is a good one from the Senior edition of Rush. Best Rush is between Permanent waves (1980) and Power windows (1985). 5 consecutive records of absolute perfection. Any song from those studio albums is phenomenal! Lyrically some of Neil's absolute best drum work and lyrics. Geddy and Alex get super creative with their instruments, sound and arrangements. All 3 are at their best. Rush in their prime playing some of the most creative music of the 80's.
I disagree. Their last album, Clockwork Angels, is by far the most significant, and complete, of their legacy. And the albums of the 70s. But hey, that's my take, yours is different.
This was basically a newer rendention of the R30 drum solo some things where the same but there was some very new drum fills different from R30 solo, but both are a masterpiece.
This was my son's first Rush concert. We saw them at Red Rocks in Colorado. At the time, he was into Metallica, Pantera and the like... and he was 16 at the time. Yeah, his reaction was similar to yours. When Neil broke into the big band sound, he screamed 'This guy can't be freaking real'... 3 people around him screamed ' We know!'😀 Rush fans😅 From that evening on, I seemed to have 'misplaced' my Rush cassettes 😜 Yes, percussion has a voice, and it's the voice of the Professor. RIP Mr. Peart 💔
This was a great concert here in DFW. This song rocked! the drum solo departed from his usual that he went back to. Was still amazing. great reaction. keep up the great work.
Truthfully, I think this is a FAR more musical/tasteful drum solo than the Frankfurt show ('04) that always seems to get reacted to. I have never heard Neil's solo with the chill e-marimba section before. Absolute gorgeous. I had to watch it twice. ☮
What I appreciate about Neil, is that he can switch from style to style. In that rendition that he did, he must have switched between maybe seven or eight different styles of drumming. There may be other drummers out there that are better than him, possibly, but no other drummer can switch with the proficiency and the expertise as Neil......and still keep true to its intrinsic source of value for that type of music genre.
I consider myself a pretty big Rush fan and a huge fan of Neil Peart. I'm just now realizing I've never heard some of their latest work. This is a great example. I've never heard this before thank you for bringing it to me I would not have found it on my own.
Hi there! Really enjoying your dive into RUSH. Been a fan since I was a teen. I was lucky enough to attend several of their concerts...right up to the end. No better band out there, really. The quality and expectations they had for their music created 3 virtuoso musicians. I would suggest you check out their "band solo" entitled Where's my thing, Here it is..." There is a live version, and it is amazing.
No reaction channel covering Rush is complete without the 10 minute instrumental "La Villa Strangiato". Classis Rush and has always been a fan favorite.
Most will tell you to watch the Frankfurt drum solo, but once I heard this one, it became my favorite of his! He incorporated more of the electronic drums in this solo, yet still played enough of the regular kit, but the instrumental lead in to the solo is phenomenal! Alex standing in front of his Marshall stack to get the feedback, I'm surprised he didn't have the hollow body ES-335, better for feedback! LOL! Geddy's performance is just off the charts, as usual!
The drummer in the B&W video backdrop behind Neil toward the end of the video was either Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich (possibly both). Both men inspired Neil to be as good as they were. You should check out the clip on TH-cam where Buddy Rich played an incredible drum solo while literally suffering a heart attack. Spoiler Alert: he made it through the performance.
You mentioned feedback, and someone you might want to check out is (politics aside,) Ted Nugent, a man who plays a Jazz style guitar and ear shattering volumes, and makes feedback part of the instrument. Check out the song "Stranglehold" live, it's pretty amazing. Something that not a lot of people really talk about but all the members of Rush were devoted family men, and try as they might, they didn't want any female groupies to interfere with their family lives. But Alex's stage hands felt bad, since groupies are one of the things that make a guitarist feel like a rock star! So if you check out the video at 3:31, there's an awesome shot of all of Alex's groupies! Bunches of Barbie Dolls, holding up tiny post-it note signs, all for Alex!
I’ve got RUSH stories for DAYS! 😁 I’m watching this at least 3 times in a row at High Volume! You Are now THE RUSH Reactor! Congratulations, you’ve earned it by just being you. 🙂
I would like to point out that I have seen a lot people react to Rush videos, and some are ok, and a few are really, really good. I definitely have my favorite ones. But I honestly can say that you are the absolute best, in my opinion. You really get this band, the people as individuals, their virtuoso talents, and the meaning of the lyrical content. And you are emotionally moved by their music. That is so awesome. I really appreciate your channel! 👏❤😁👍
Great reaction, people discuss who Is the best , for me Neil but something that's I know un a 100 years people still talking about him "THE PROFESSOR". Milady Redhead plis blow your mind listen and wathcing. Niels Peart drum solo un Frankfurt. Is the best. Again great reaction
Another great reaction as you are truly being drawn into the Rush rabbit hole...with three of the best musicians in Rock history. Hi there, Red Headed Neighbour: Are our home boys giving you hot flashes? This was fantastic and Neil was beyond amazing! My favourite part of his drum section was the really nice music he was playing on those bars that look like a xylophone. Leif and Geddy were great too. All this talent from Neil plus he is the main lyricist too! This was another super reaction by you. The title reminded me of a poem that I wrote when I was a teenager that had the words, 'malignant trifle' in it. It was about a little girl who had lost her life due to an apathetic world.
I don't care what anyone thinks of their music, they are the most talented rock band ever, imho.

Answer - Neil Peart
Actually, Peart had an uncanny sense of time.
I'm so thrilled Rush wrote a song all about me!😎🙃
I am telling you, there is nothing in this world quiet like watching these guys get it on and they do the entire concert!!! But to see the professor do his thing on those drums is a treat like no other. Forever the GOAT: We miss and love you Neal. RIP
That was a very different drum solo of his, he gives and gives..
Neil Peart: MUSICIAN! ☮
Percussionist and lyricist.
I'd also sneak 'Hold Your Fire' in there; To me, it's on a par with 'Power Windows' 🙂
It really doesn't matter, from start to finish. Phenomenal !! 🥁🎸🎹🎶
Three virtuosos sololing at the same time
Malignant Narcissism is the first part. De Slagwerker is the Drum solo.
De Slagwerker (Ger.) Translation: The Percussionist
This was basically a newer rendention of the R30 drum solo some things where the same but there was some very new drum fills different from R30 solo, but both are a masterpiece.
I'm just so glad that Neil got to bring some Jazz into his solo's considering the Buddy Rich was the man he looked up to. Thank you redheadedneighbor.
I dont care what anyone thinks of their music, they are the most talented rock band ever, imho
they are up there along with others!
3 people around him screamed ' We know!'😀 Rush fans😅
From that evening on, I seemed to have 'misplaced' my Rush cassettes 😜
Yes, percussion has a voice, and it's the voice of the Professor.
RIP Mr. Peart 💔
This was a great concert here in DFW. This song rocked! the drum solo departed from his usual that he went back to. Was still amazing. great reaction. keep up the great work.
Superb in every way, shape and form.❤❤❤
The swan song of an amazing band , let's keep their music alive 🤘RUSH🤘🇨🇦. 😃s from 🇨🇦 ps most who listen to the Garden tend to tear up 😭
I was cutting an onion. I always cut onions when I listen to the Garden.
Ms Red w/blue eyes, I keep meaning to say I appreciate that you don't use foul language. You preserve what is so graceful about femininity.
Alex is standing in front of his speaker stack getting feedback into the guitar pickups.
Another one of his great solos is the one from Frankfurt
I consider myself a pretty big Rush fan and a huge fan of Neil Peart. I'm just now realizing I've never heard some of their latest work. This is a great example. I've never heard this before thank you for bringing it to me I would not have found it on my own.
Neil does a jazz tribute with drum solo to Buddy RIch in a video he is a lot younger and plays a drum kit 1/3 the size.
The music video for "Malignant Narcissism" is actually pretty interesting in its own right. It is an animated Family Tree of the world's religions.
Ily run a mile with you as long as this is the song we listen to the entire time.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow, I seen this concert tour here in Phoenix. It always blows me away.
A lot of fun
😗 Ooooh, good choice! 😁 Reminding me what a great Tour this was! 🥰🐰
The big band section is a Buddy Rich number, so I'm guessing Buddy
You are Loved!!! ♥ TOTALLY AMAZING!!! Neil is part of me... ♥
Saw that one live, completely over the top excellent
Great reaction👏Emotion Detector album version will suprise you. So will Middetown Dreams😁Power Windows album
Geddy's bass sound so PHAT!
I’ve got RUSH stories for DAYS! 😁
I’m watching this at least 3 times in a row at High Volume!
Love this one especially the solo which I think is one of Neil best. Every Rush instrumental is just the boys jamming and having fun. 😊
Another great reaction as you are truly being drawn into the Rush rabbit hole...with three of the best musicians in Rock history. Here are your next two MUST SEE for reactions...two more instrumentals.
- La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER. They performed this right before Working Man at the end of this 3 hour concert. You will be amazed.
- Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
See like I said objectively the greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be. Just more evidence of that fact.
I love this instrumental! It's so heavy and dark, and everyone's playing is phenomenal! Another great live performance is "Between the Wheels, live from the R30 tour in Germany.
Miss thses guys so so much, they were part of our lives for so long - now go listen to 'The Garden'
I love Rush! This is a great instrumental that is often overlooked
Neil kicks ass! 🎉
Thanks Red!
We’re not worthy of Neil’s greatness but I’m glad I can enjoy it! Music for the Gods!🤘🎸
"We can't help ourselves".
GOAT!
btw A salute to Rush's stage technicians.
