Remember Infernape was in the same generation as Arceus who is basically the God of pokemon who takes inspirations from the Buddha due to the reference of his 1000 arms.
Nah man, they're happy when 1 or 2 fire fighters show up, but once there's 3 or more firefighters in a row, well, at that point you basically know that everything has gone up in flames!
@@machina5 No I know, it's not a critique on actual firefighters, God Bless them, it's a jab at how everything was fine when it was JUST Infernape after Blaziken (since Infernape was infinitely better AND cooler AND had a better story arc in the anime anyway), but it suddenly became unforgivable once Emboar came around. And to be fair, even though I don't CARE to that degree, I can agree that it's a little disappointingly excessive to have 3 same type starters in a row, but then you realize there's a lot of same type starters, just not in a row. Most of the Water are PURE Water, many of the Grass are PURE Grass, and FIRE is the least guilty having only like 2 Pure Fire spread apart like 6 Generations (1 of which is IN SPIRIT thanks to Libero essentially a Fire or Fighting as well due to High Jump Kick, but I won't open that can of worms).
To be fair, the Pokémon Center’s Infernape plush has been sold out for quite a while. And while on the topic, I am genuinely surprised that the center has so few Sinnoh plushes. Only 29 show up, and there’s only 15 different species among them if you count Ditto-faced and sleeping plushes and don’t count Galactic Pikachu. They don’t even have a Turtwig plush available! I know they recently released the Hoenn line of their “sitting cuties” series, but with the 3 new Sinnoh games coming out in less than a year, it’d be wise to capitalize on it.
They really sponsored a diabetic and made him eat sweets as a part of the promotion. This level of commitment deserves a thumbs up and a sub from an another account!
I was annoyed by Emboar for that one reason when it came out and instantly dismissed it as my starter, but now that time has passed and I actually looked at it on it's own merits and not as "ugh third fire fighting in a row" I realize how misguided that was. It's one of my favorite starters now

I've never really got the gripe people have with the amount of Fire/Fighting starters. 3 of them is too much, yet having just as many mono-Grass starters within those first 5 Gens (and now 1 more overall thanks to Rillaboon) is okay?
Yeah cause mono makes more sense for starters as their first forms are always mono. Introducing 3 starters in a row with the same type combination just seems dull cause why add the same second type.

The (highly subjective) dullness comment is also hypocritical when the same can be applied to monotype starters with the lone type denying them the advantages they may have over other grass, fire and water type options in the region beyond the equally bland perk of possibly better stats. The comment of "it makes more sense" can equally be reversed when it comes to the fire/fighting starters with their designs and origins, with Blaziken being based on a fighting chicken, Infernape being based on Sun Wukong and Emboar being based on Zhu Bajie, of which not having the fighting type for would make far less sense.

The argument of "it's dull" is not a valid one when speaking of their functionality, especially when one could apply it to the more basic nature of mono-types (and, unlike the dullness complaint, would actually have a leg to stand on when criticising them from an objective standpoint of function). For me at least, the difference is timing. With Mono Grass, we had Grass/Ground in between Sceptile and Serperior. Which led into 2 gens with dual type Grass starters before Rillaboom. I wish some of the Mono grass types had more interesting type combos (Rillaboom especially), but they were at least spaced out. With Fire Fighting, we got them 3 gens in a row with no break. it's a more unique typing then mono grass for sure, and I've used more of Fire/Fighting crew because of it, but the point still stands. I wish they were spaced out.

Which confused me when they started building up that pattern, b/c how would a Fire/Fighting kappa/fish work? @@emerfirek he was a sort of water spirit, the Kappa part comes from the Japanese retelling since "strong water spirit" usually means "lets make it look like a Kappa" to Japanese writers. as far as i know there is no definitive look for him
11:20 I’m pretty sure the dual Typings were all meant to combat one another: Torterra has Earthquake for both Infernape and Empoleon. However, it no longer resists Empoleon’s Water-Type moves. Infernape has Fire-Type moves against Torterra, and Fighting-Type moves against Empoleon. Empoleon would probably be the “oddball” of the group, though it’s dual Typing means it no longer resists Infernape’s Fire-Type moves, and it’s no longer weak to Torterra’s Grass-Type moves (although it is weak to its Ground-Type moves). However, Torterra is 4x weak to Ice-Type moves, which Empoleon can learn (obviously without STAB bonus, but that would probably be too powerful otherwise). Of course, it still has Water-Type moves for Infernape.
@@RonaldDotCa Im going out on a limb, but fairy fits better. Fairies are supposed to be beings of no evil, right? So Water/Fairy based off of fire fighters would work. Water/Fighting would work just as good, and its a unused starter typing. Water/Steel has already been used but it could be like a fire truck Water/Steel type.
Very much agree with this, people saying Infernape was one two many need to realize that before we already had 2 mono water types in a row (gen 1 and gen 2) and 2 mono grass types in a row (gen 2 and gen 3)
@@dinoshotgun mono starters are different, though. They ARE the starter types, it's not stale to do that again, but you expect variety with the secondary types.
@@galarstar052 except it is stale to keep them mono for multiple generations in a row, and to be fair we’ve only had mono type repeats twice (the grass and water ones I mentioned previously), I’m just saying, doing the same thing multiple times in a row (in terms of typing) gets stale fast
@@galarstar052 I would prefer them repeating extra types rather than none at all. In gen 5, Emboar was the only one to get and extra type, which is stupid, and I would've loved to see Blastoise, the gen 2 starters, and gen 8 starters get extra types as well
Honestly I feel like Infernape also takes a lot of inspiration from the Hindu god/diety Hanuman. I'm not denying that it's based on Sun Wukong, but I feel like it still takes a lot of inspiration from Hanuman

Because monotypes are relatively normal and expected, whereas a specific dualtype combo is much more specific and much less likely to occur multiple times.
Psychic/Fairy isn't as offensive as Normal/Flying and Grass/Poison tho At least Psychic and Fairy types had some breathing room BEFORE being obsessively paired together Also for the record it only feels like a lot bc SwSh introduced Rapidash, Hattrem and Hatterene
Fire and fighting might be good resistance wise but it is also the opposite when considering the physical special split, fight is predominantly a special centric typing and fighting is a physical centric typing, in order for them to work well u need a pokemon that has both good physical and special attack and very few pokemon do, that's why I will always prefer type combination that focus more on 1 of the attack stats like fire and psychic which I say is a much better combination because both are special focused types or fighting and ground for physical focus
Fire/Fighting as a type combo does serve a pretty unique purpose for Combusken and Monferno specifically: in their respective games, the first gym leaders both use Rock types. Giving them the Fighting type upon evolving ensures that players who insist on only using their starter can overcome that early game hurdle without completely breaking the level curve. Gameplay purposes aside, I love all three of these guys
So I was watching Disney movies and watched Lilo and Stitch and then the thought came to me “What if someone took all of the experiments from the movies and put them in Pokémon type groups”
Personally, I never saw a problem with the fire/fighting thing. I just think that they're cool 'mon with some dope ass inspirations. When you see just what went into designing them, the typing becomes very irrelevant, imo.

Kind of surprised you didn't mention how in Japanese media (particularly shounen anime/manga), many of the protagonists are fighters with "fiery" dispositions, or have a "burning passion" for what they do. And for most players, starters are their protagonists. In fact, this kind of thinking also fits really well with scorbunny's line and let's face it, they would have totally ended up fire/fighting if only gamefreak didn't want to upset even more fans.
I don't hate the starters for being fire/fighting as it is actually a cool typing, it's just why did they make 3 in a row, and then proceed to make Ininceroar NOT a fighting type despite being a wrestler.
@@TheEnigmaticBM39 Yeah but heels are just character roles. Wrestlers are fighters regardless. Besides, we got two Pokemon being half Dark and half Fighting being Scrafty and Pangoro and those two types counter each other.
In terms of game balancing, think of the first couple of gyms, infernape's second evolution learns a fighting type move which is great for getting through the rock gym. Also I honestly think that embroar could've really been a fire steel type and it wouldn't be that bad thematically, seeing as it could be a small reference to zhu bajie's mud-rake like weapon, and the fact that his body is reminiscent of the 候风地动仪, an ancient chinese seismograph made by chinese mathematician zhang heng, which plays very well into it's weakness to ground moves (like earthquake!!). You could also give it something like seismic toss. Idk I think it breaks up the starter types better while also deepening the chinese theme of the pokemon
Its funny cause Emboar was my last favorite fire starter. I never liked delphox (honestly i only really chesnaught), incenroar is too awkward looking for me, I am completely indifferent to Cinderace.
Making infernape fire-ice would have been perfect. 1)Ground is supereffective against steel, steel is supereffective against ice and ice is supereffective against ground. 2)It would have been a new type combination. 3)They just needed to add some more fur and say that's somewhat inspired by Yetis
Last I checked, Infernape doesn't get hate. The Fire/Fighting type starter hate started when Emboar was released and it kind of effects them all as a type combination, though it does impact Emboar a bit more than the others. Personally, I really don't like Blaziken (I think it's design is a bit too cluttered in various ways, though its mega does fix most of my issues with its design), but love Infernape and Emboar (though I admit the latter took a bit to grow on me).
@@TheDragonfriday If the inspiration calls for it, then I don't see the problem. Can't kick a football without two legs to kick it with can you? Same thing with Incineroar and Emboar. The only starter I'd say was pushing it was Delphox, but it was a cool stick wand so it gets a pass from me
I’ve always thought having had three Fire/Fighting types in a row contributed to the negative perception of Chesnsught - yes it was a new type (for starters) but Fighting just had an association with boring at this point. You know, it’s really interesting looking at the GO only players, many really like Emboar - and I’ve realised that’s because they have no concept of the starter Pokémon archetype, or at least it doesn’t play into GO so they don’t care about the repeated typing
Emboar makes alot of sense as a fire/fighting types. He's from the same lore that infernape is from (journey to the west) and I believe the character that emboar is based off of from that story justifies the typing.
(This is not meant as an attack towards you) his background might make sense for his typing but why is it the start for the Region based on New York. None of the Unova starters look to have anything to do with it and aren't based on the region at all.
@@davidunderwood9728 I think the theme of the Unovan starters is Different Nationalities. Which makes sense specially if it's based in New York City. Also, you can see people speaking different languages in Castelia City.
I already loved Infernape and Emboar (they were my first starters in each Gen, though I've used all three in each repeatedly) but this is awesome information. I'll admit the repeated typing could get anniying, but as a kid back then I did not remotely care about that. I just liked their designs and thought they were fun to use.
Imagine being Empoleon, a Steel type, being weak to the other Sinnoh starters. Imagine Empoleon, a STEEL type, widely regarded as the 2nd, sometimes 1st depending on your opinion and timeframe, type in the game, resisting nearly every other Pokemon.
Torterra is technically the best Gen 4 starter since it has STAB super effective Earthquake against Infernape and Empoleon,effectively making Earthquake have a base power of 300.
It might just be a coincidence but the number 3 & the fighting type by now seems to have reemerged. The last three bear Pokémon (Pancham, Stufful & Kubfu) all happen to be fighting type.
I wonder what it would be like if the fire starters each had a different second typing like charizard had dragon, and blaziken had flying, emboar had ground?

Blaziken and Infernape are Fire/Fighting, because the first gym in Hoenn and Sinnoh is a Rock-type - Grass and Water are supereffecive against Rock, but Fire is resisted, so Fire-type starter need a supereffective move against Rock-type. I understand that they cannot make a Fire/Grass or Fire/Water starter and Fire/Ground is 4x weak to Water... But Swampert is 4x weak to Sceptile too, so maybe. Only Fire/Fighting and Fire/Steel (but double resistance to Grass) can be supereffective against Rock. But Emboar doesn't need this - in Unova first gyms are equaly for all of starters - Grass, Water or Fire in BW and Normal in BW2 (and Tepig cannot learn a Fighting-type move by level up)
Honestly I didn’t mind multiple Fire/Fighting type starters they are all very good. I was more upset that Serperior and Samurott didn’t get secondary types
Emboar is one of my two favorite pokemon next to Aggron, I've had a line of them since their inception to the series. Mixboar never fails to be extremely versatile and vital in all my teams...save for s&s since you can't have them in there.
Nobunaga named himself the "demon king of the Sixth Heaven", in order to mock Takeda Shingen, who had styled himself the protector of buddhism in Japan. It's a bit like Attila calling himself the "scourge of god", to play on the fears of his enemies. It's very chuuni and I love it.
Why is everyone upset that we got 3 fire/fighting-starters, but why is non one talking about that we got *4* only water type Starters! I mean in my eyes thats worse than fire/fighting.
The thing is, I am ok with Fire/Fighting but I do want not only a different combo but a different design than a bipedal animal, give us a quadrapedal fire starter or a fire starter that becomes a giant winged creature, there is more to fire than looking like a warrior all the time

I wish some of the Mono grass types had more interesting type combos (Rillaboom especially), but they were at least spaced out.
With Fire Fighting, we got them 3 gens in a row with no break. it's a more unique typing then mono grass for sure, and I've used more of Fire/Fighting crew because of it, but the point still stands. I wish they were spaced out.

I’m pretty sure the dual Typings were all meant to combat one another:
Torterra has Earthquake for both Infernape and Empoleon. However, it no longer resists Empoleon’s Water-Type moves.
Infernape has Fire-Type moves against Torterra, and Fighting-Type moves against Empoleon.
Empoleon would probably be the “oddball” of the group, though it’s dual Typing means it no longer resists Infernape’s Fire-Type moves, and it’s no longer weak to Torterra’s Grass-Type moves (although it is weak to its Ground-Type moves). However, Torterra is 4x weak to Ice-Type moves, which Empoleon can learn (obviously without STAB bonus, but that would probably be too powerful otherwise). Of course, it still has Water-Type moves for Infernape.
I can't wait for an actual Water/Fairy type that is inspired by actual fire fighters to be released.
Why fairy? Would pure water, water fighting, or even water steel not be better choices?

Very much agree with this, people saying Infernape was one two many need to realize that before we already had 2 mono water types in a row (gen 1 and gen 2) and 2 mono grass types in a row (gen 2 and gen 3)
@@dinoshotgun mono starters are different, though. They ARE the starter types, it's not stale to do that again, but you expect variety with the secondary types.

Honestly I feel like Infernape also takes a lot of inspiration from the Hindu god/diety Hanuman. I'm not denying that it's based on Sun Wukong, but I feel like it still takes a lot of inspiration from Hanuman
some historians believe Hanuman is the inspiration for Sun Wukong so its not surprising they have similarities

Plenty of rando Pokemon share types, and it can be annoying, but I think the sticking point for fire/fighting is that three were starter Pokemon.
Psychic/Fairy isn't as offensive as Normal/Flying and Grass/Poison tho

Fire and fighting might be good resistance wise but it is also the opposite when considering the physical special split, fight is predominantly a special centric typing and fighting is a physical centric typing, in order for them to work well u need a pokemon that has both good physical and special attack and very few pokemon do, that's why I will always prefer type combination that focus more on 1 of the attack stats like fire and psychic which I say is a much better combination because both are special focused types or fighting and ground for physical focus

Fire/Fighting as a type combo does serve a pretty unique purpose for Combusken and Monferno specifically: in their respective games, the first gym leaders both use Rock types. Giving them the Fighting type upon evolving ensures that players who insist on only using their starter can overcome that early game hurdle without completely breaking the level curve.
Gameplay purposes aside, I love all three of these guys

Personally, I never saw a problem with the fire/fighting thing. I just think that they're cool 'mon with some dope ass inspirations. When you see just what went into designing them, the typing becomes very irrelevant, imo.

Kind of surprised you didn't mention how in Japanese media (particularly shounen anime/manga), many of the protagonists are fighters with "fiery" dispositions, or have a "burning passion" for what they do. And for most players, starters are their protagonists. In fact, this kind of thinking also fits really well with scorbunny's line and let's face it, they would have totally ended up fire/fighting if only gamefreak didn't want to upset even more fans.
I don't hate the starters for being fire/fighting as it is actually a cool typing, it's just why did they make 3 in a row, and then proceed to make Ininceroar NOT a fighting type despite being a wrestler.
He's a "heel" but they already addressed that in the lore.
First it got repetitive but now it's misleading.
@@TheEnigmaticBM39 Yeah but heels are just character roles. Wrestlers are fighters regardless. Besides, we got two Pokemon being half Dark and half Fighting being Scrafty and Pangoro and those two types counter each other.
In terms of game balancing, think of the first couple of gyms, infernape's second evolution learns a fighting type move which is great for getting through the rock gym. Also I honestly think that embroar could've really been a fire steel type and it wouldn't be that bad thematically, seeing as it could be a small reference to zhu bajie's mud-rake like weapon, and the fact that his body is reminiscent of the 候风地动仪, an ancient chinese seismograph made by chinese mathematician zhang heng, which plays very well into it's weakness to ground moves (like earthquake!!). You could also give it something like seismic toss. Idk I think it breaks up the starter types better while also deepening the chinese theme of the pokemon

Last I checked, Infernape doesn't get hate. The Fire/Fighting type starter hate started when Emboar was released and it kind of effects them all as a type combination, though it does impact Emboar a bit more than the others.
Personally, I really don't like Blaziken (I think it's design is a bit too cluttered in various ways, though its mega does fix most of my issues with its design), but love Infernape and Emboar (though I admit the latter took a bit to grow on me).
Emboar being a Three Kingdoms era warlord effectively makes it a Dynasty Warriors reference and that's just awesome to me.

I’ve always thought having had three Fire/Fighting types in a row contributed to the negative perception of Chesnsught - yes it was a new type (for starters) but Fighting just had an association with boring at this point.
You know, it’s really interesting looking at the GO only players, many really like Emboar - and I’ve realised that’s because they have no concept of the starter Pokémon archetype, or at least it doesn’t play into GO so they don’t care about the repeated typing

Emboar makes alot of sense as a fire/fighting types. He's from the same lore that infernape is from (journey to the west) and I believe the character that emboar is based off of from that story justifies the typing.
(This is not meant as an attack towards you) his background might make sense for his typing but why is it the start for the Region based on New York. None of the Unova starters look to have anything to do with it and aren't based on the region at all.

I already loved Infernape and Emboar (they were my first starters in each Gen, though I've used all three in each repeatedly) but this is awesome information. I'll admit the repeated typing could get anniying, but as a kid back then I did not remotely care about that. I just liked their designs and thought they were fun to use.

Torterra is technically the best Gen 4 starter since it has STAB super effective Earthquake against Infernape and Empoleon,effectively making Earthquake have a base power of 300.
Now I'm disappointed that the Unovan starters aren't based on American, Italian, or Dutch references. it would have been perfect!

It might just be a coincidence but the number 3 & the fighting type by now seems to have reemerged. The last three bear Pokémon (Pancham, Stufful & Kubfu) all happen to be fighting type.

Donkey Kong is hybrid of Infernape and Emboar that for some reason lost its fireness, you heard it here first!
Blaziken and Infernape are Fire/Fighting, because the first gym in Hoenn and Sinnoh is a Rock-type - Grass and Water are supereffecive against Rock, but Fire is resisted, so Fire-type starter need a supereffective move against Rock-type. I understand that they cannot make a Fire/Grass or Fire/Water starter and Fire/Ground is 4x weak to Water... But Swampert is 4x weak to Sceptile too, so maybe. Only Fire/Fighting and Fire/Steel (but double resistance to Grass) can be supereffective against Rock.
But Emboar doesn't need this - in Unova first gyms are equaly for all of starters - Grass, Water or Fire in BW and Normal in BW2 (and Tepig cannot learn a Fighting-type move by level up)

Emboar is one of my two favorite pokemon next to Aggron, I've had a line of them since their inception to the series. Mixboar never fails to be extremely versatile and vital in all my teams...save for s&s since you can't have them in there.

The thing is, I am ok with Fire/Fighting but I do want not only a different combo but a different design than a bipedal animal, give us a quadrapedal fire starter or a fire starter that becomes a giant winged creature, there is more to fire than looking like a warrior all the time
